I saw these brothers in their later years. The lead singer sat on a stool. When he got ready to hit that note, he stood up, leaned back, hit that note, and HELLLLLLLLD IT! The placed erupted. It was a magnificent night at The Dell in Philly. They still had it. Thank you brothers for years of good music.
YUP. Saw them at Hampton Institute during my Sophomore year …. Didn’t wanna go, but, my roommate/sack talked me into going. Was one of the BEST CONCERTS I’VE EVER ATTENDED
I am 76 it was a great pleasure to see them perform as it is to hear them in 2021 all i can say is man man what a sound rip you never be forgotten Memphis
I'm gonna win the lottery and I'm gonna bring back music from the 60S AND 70S, real singers and real musicians!!!! We were so blessed to have this music!!!!! Let's bring it back!!!! We need our real music back!!!! Come on everybody,,,let's put real music back with us!!!! We need it back, it made everybody happy.
The Dells is one of the greatest soul singing groups of all time. So romantic. Brought back pleasant memories listening to them now. Each member sang his part well. The harmonizing is terrific. So much passion.
Sorry D.... it is exactly 24 seconds, Plus or Minus 20 to 24 milli seconds. Working in the recording studio as a kid at STAX & ARDENT here in Memphis, Tn, the only for sure accuracy we would have to pull the Master Tape Reel out of a vault and pull the Analog 2" tape reel. we had music of pure LOVE !! GLORY!!!!! HALLELUJAH!!!!
The Mighty Dells. Marvin Junior is a straight bad ass. He held that note for what seemed like forever on the original record. Then, when The Dells re-recorded “Stay In My Corner”, damn near 20 years later, Marvin held that note twice as long on the remake. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🙇🏾♂️🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thank you for posting my dad; while we knew he was a great singer -- believe it or not he was 1000 times better dad and husband... LaTanya Junior, daughter of Marvin Junior (in the words of my dad "right on")
I've read a lot about your dad in the last 5 years or so. EVERYTHING I have read about him has been POSITIVE. What he has said and what has been said about him has all been a testimony to the man he was. His passing was a great loss to many, but his living and his talent is something that will live on with us FOREVER.
I have read a lot about this man (Marvin Junior) and I have never read anything that disappointed me about who HE was. He stayed with this group even though he got a multitude of offers to go solo. He stayed with his wife and kids and I am sure that there was temptations from the outside. I read that one of his favorite things to do was cook and he would go to the store and shop for others in the community and cook for them. A truly honorable man. When I heard he had passed, it felt as though a family member had passed. We have all been truly honored to have him and blessed to have the legacy that he left. Love you always Marvin Junior. Condolences to your family.
The best ever! I liked the Temptations, Smokey & the Miracles, the 4 Tops, the Stylistics, etc. But the Dells were in a class all by themselves, a national and cultural treasure. Their raw talent was off of the charts, even more so in 2023.
This is why The Dells are so 'Huge' Marvin Junior is so so believable, and living this song, not just singing it. His Vocals are 'Raw' and not mechanical. The Dells 'Background Vocals' are flawless and soulful, and Johnnie Carter's 'Ethereal Tenor' completes the package.
Hi edagdwg thanks for sharing this story of real life sharing what ever it takes to keep our life and family together no matter what people say or do respect yourself and others love wins Linda j peace ❤️💯💯💯⚓⚓🌹🌹🌹🦋🦋🦋🦋🌈🌈🌈
You know, I never hear anyone mention the 3 guys singing backup on this song but that tight harmony they throw at us at 2:23 and then bend the notes into a minor key is a real high point in this arrangement. It really comes thru on the studio version and something I wait for every time I hear this song. It's sort of like the drum break in the middle of "In the Air Tonight" by Phil Collins, we all know it's coming and we can't hardly wait for it. The Dells showed us what the great vocal tradition of the Doo Wop groups from the 1950's could look like the the 1970's.
All the Dell's brought something too the table those boys could sing not one miss a beat they was great in every way long live the Dell's they gave us beautiful time's and great summer nights for some reason. Beautiful music sounds even better at night maybe because you or trying too rested and it's easy too do that too good music. 🎶.
True talent. No engineered voices here. Just true talent. Loving this in 2020. ❤️❤️❤️. Even if it is Election Day, this is a great way to get away from all the craziness.
There will never be another group like "The Dells"... The harmony & when "Two Tons of Fun" that sweet Marvin belts out that note and holds it for so long without breaking leaves me breathless still to this day... Thanks for the memories & for the share... God Bless to All
Its September 2021, still staying home as much as possible due to Covid so I had time to look up all these great old groups. At 4:34 he hits a note and holds it for over 20 seconds. The singer next to him was smiling at how he held the note and waiting his turn to jump back in. The singers were all into this and oh what a performance. Love how the singers lips matched the words..no lip syncing, no pre-recorded tracks...just great talent. Thank you so much for posting.!!!
Hello friends it's the year of 2022 and I'm still listening to this song by The dells stay in my corner and I'm still enjoying it my husband and I really really connected with this song when it first came out I say they can't sing and we enjoy them
And the only reason he held the note was because the label wanted the song to be 3 mins long. They were short about a min so he said “ I can hold the note to make the song a min longer”.
@@williamg2552 I hear you- but all remain uniquely great. Marvin Jr (along with Mr. Levi Stubb's) remains the greatest lead group singer ever. Mr. Ruffin always greeted him as ' Mr. Iron Throat' & Dave's voice which had that sense of drama with lyrics & whose voice never left him ever. And as for Mr. Wynne, he's was perhaps (along with the Jolly Green Giant Mr. Al Green) the greatest ad lib male singer ever- able to extend songs with endless off the cuff riffs. One think is certain: music lovers will not see the likes of them & their peers again- ever! Those greats that are still here - we should give them their flowers while they're here.
Yeah, they did. they got inducted into The ROCK and ROLL HALL of FAME in 2004...AND The VOCAL GROUP HALL of FAME that SAME YEAR !! 1) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gq1gk6z1gWs.html 2) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Bu579EOoMZo.html 3) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yjTRtS8LqRw.html 4) www.rockhall.com/inductees/dells
Yessss they did they got inducted into the hall of fame, but the group that should have been inducted into the hall of fame was the spinners now they never got the credit that they deserve or reconition and the spinners deserved it.
@@kemetdebgibson2875 BOTH groups deserve it. The mighty DELLS had been making hit records in the music industry since 1952...and they were THE LIVING LINK between 1950's Doo-Wop, and the Soul/R&B Music of the 60's and '70's. And, as the years went by, and MOST OTHER '50's groups began to FADE, The DELLS' popularity actually INCREASED. The ONLY OTHER 50's groups that could make THAT claim were THE MIRACLES and LITTLE ANTHONY & THE IMPERIALS !! Plus: The DELLS only had ONE change in personnel in their ENTIRE 60 YEAR HISTORY !! NO OTHER GROUP can make that claim!!
at this point, the group had been singing together almost 20 years. Look at Johnny watching Marvin hold that note and how impressed he is by Marvin's ability to do so. Now, they sing together every day and they must have sung that song a million times at that point. but, Johnny was still transfixed just watching Marvin. And Marvin just took it in stride, like this is what I do. Love that about these guys and the men of their era who just went out and got the job done. I very much appreciate that about all of you and just want to say thank you.
He held that note ba!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! for 23 Seconds ! The Shortest Brother with the Highest Notes Stayed on Point. Not a hair strand was out of place. They Rocked those Afros. The Dell's Second to None even to me Ms Sarah from Miami in 2020
I NEED HELP..WHEN THIS SONG COMES ON...I REWIND TO HEAR IT AGAIN N AGAIN...N U THINK U R REALLY SINGIN N SOUNDIN GOOD...MARVIN N JOHNNY...I LUVVVVVVVV THEM...IF THEY WOULD PICK ME 4 THEY WOMAN ILL BE TRYIN 2BREATHE...MIGHT WET MY PANTIES...LUVVVVV ALL OF THE DELLS...TRUST... BUT NO U AINT WORTH
As kids when this was released in 1965 (I was 10) hanging out was listening to the radio kids would pass out trying to hold that note by Marvin Junior.
when i ever heard of the dells in late 60's most powerful voices is some of them still living i have been playing their music to this day it takes me back to high school
I was 3 years old at the time of this AWESOME performance,& thanks to older sisters I grew up appreciating so many talented musicians,& singers of that era. As society dictates, this style of "soul" R&B has given way to a more love- less, crass,& quite frankly....violent induced form of so called music. I know it's cliché, but they really don't make it like this anymore.
Terry Tuner I've played with a lot of people. But, one particular time in the late 90's, I had the pleasure of playing with The Funk Brothers of Motown. There were a lot of old timers there, including Smokey, Martha Reeves, Mary Wilson, etc. Being the young buck. I was asking a lot of questions about the days. But, one question I asked was, "who do you feel was the best singer of your day?". When I asked this question, they started talking as if I wasnt even there, meaning I was totally excluded and basically not even in the room. So, names were thrown out. David Ruffin, marvin, G.C. Cameron, Levi Stubbs. BUT, to a man/ woman, damn near ALL agreed on one name and one name only, MARVIN JUNIOR!!!!!!! Once his name was mentioned, about 90% ofthem, in their old voices, were like, "oh yeah. No one could touch him". Even the one gentleman who was all about Ruffin, changed his tune once Marvin Junior was mentioned. Marvin Junior was a bad man!!!!!,
I agree with you. But not just Marvin jr, the whole band. This whole group of guys were pure talent, probably the best I've ever heard. So they all need to get props if you know what I'm saying.
Sheeeit!!!! Sang the damn song!!!! Damn it!!!! Damn I miss you guys!!!! You make me cry!!!!! Marvin and Tommy!!!! Nobody can touch you!!!! I love you every day and night
Love this song ❤️ Has a lot memories, everyone that was around me loved this song and now they are all gone ☹️, but the Dells keeps me focused 🙋🏿♀️🙋🏿♀️🙋🏿♀️🙋🏿♀️😍😘
The Dells was the best singers that came out of Illinois & was very over looked from awards. I know we had many more Chi-Lites ect but the Dells had the sound. RIP Marvin JR & Johnny Carter
Edith Beck Johnny Funches mother adopted my grandfather, when he was a Lil boy 🙌🏽🙏🏽 Lucus Williams! His Uncle Lou was a real good friend of Johnny’s mother. True story!!!

One of the Best "Class" Acts of a generation! I'll Never forget the last time we saw them live at the New Year's Eve Show at the Foxx Theatre in Detroit. They had that Theatre Lit Up!! Then suddenly they stopped and called for quiet. Someone in the close up front row was having a heart-attack. They stopped that Show until the paramedic came down the aisle, took the man out, then the Dells called for prayers for this man! I will never forget that, and after the Show, that's all you heard people discussing ... what a class act the Dells are! :-)
These guys had real synergy! They all had a special individual quality to their voices, where you could identify each one. But together...whew, just GOLDEN. MAGIC!
soul strenth crusader you are not lying! i love them! I am white and I grew up on on all soul music like this. deep soul music is the best! I was adopted by black parents and my white friends look at me like wow...well some of them but not all.
Jenny Robinson serious Bro? I would say, " Google their upcoming shows. you may see some new faces, but the sound of the past made a lot of mellinials. oops!
this is a love song, this is how a man is suppose to talk to a woman, we are emotional beings, we live out of our feelings, our perceptions come from out of our feelings,we relate and connect with our feelings, if a man can master our feelings he can master our heart.
I was raised that way, however, I have learned that is no longer the way. I miss them and their soulfulness. They and the other were my beating heart. I used to get their .45 as's as soon as they came out. It was a beautiful time in the world for mee.

And some man in the beginning told marvin junior that he couldn't sing,oh how he must-have hurt when this man made their music sing to the hearts of all of us,The Dells forevermore,
I remember the Dells and knew from the early days Marvin and Vern are cousins to my first wife in Harvey. I lived near Johnny Carter. He was always Kool. I saw them live at the Regal in Chicago and in Phoenix AZ. Years later Johnny said what you doing out here. I had Moved there. I still deal with alot of Allison's Vern's family. What great memories.
what a powerfull and magnificant group of men whose musical talent and IQ will never ever be matched. anyone who dislikes this reality can only be jealous because the music can not be matched!
ABSOLUTELY CHICAGO'S BEST VOCAL GROUP, AND JUST LIKE THE FOUR TOPS, THEY KEPT THE SAME SINGERS FOR DECADES. AND WHEN THEIR LEAD SINGERS DIED, THEY DIDN'T WATER THE PRODUCT DOWN WITH REPLACEMENTS. THEY RETIRED. I SALUTE THESE BROTHERS. AND AM PROUD TO SAY MY VOCAL GROUP "PAPER BAG & CO". OPENED FOR THEM AT THE CHASE HOTEL IN MY HOME TOWN OF ST.LOUIS.
ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITES....RED AND BLUE LITES...SLOW GRINDIND HARD UP AGAINST THE WALL, CAUSE IT WAS THE LAST SONG PLAYED...AND IF YOU WERN'T,,,, YOU LOST OUT....DELLS ALL NITE
