Every time Johnny cash flies his starship…the tears flow from my eyes. What a great song with incredible meaning. Their velvet smooth voices singing about the many lives a highwayman lives, reincarnated to the next life to try and get it right eventually.

I saw them in concert. I'm not a country fan. Other concerts I'd been to were Frank Zappa, The Eagles, Genesis, Rod Stewart, etc. but The Highwaymen actually put on the best concert I've experienced. The music was continuous from start to finish. Not even momentary breaks between songs. One song just continued seamlessly into the next like a medley with each singer taking the lead in turn, with the others singing backup & playing guitar. Most of the songs were each singers greatest hits. Although not a country music fan I recognised them all. They clearly were having the time of their life playing with each other. It's really great experiencing a concert where everyone there knows they are witnessing & participating in something special.

A TV Special led to the formation of the Highwaymen. According to the Willie Nelson and Friends Museum, the idea for the four men to collaborate came in 1984 when Cash enlisted the three musicians to play on his Johnny Cash Christmas TV special that was filmed in Switzerland. Back at the hotel, they got to jamming and hanging out and realized it would be fun to team up and try something new. But there was a little something else. According to Classic Country Music, Cash had been bummed around that time because his newer music wasn't doing as well as it did in earlier years. Marty Stuart, who was Cash's son-in-law at the time, said Cash got his "first glimmer of hope" while in Switzerland playing with Jennings, Nelson, and Kristofferson. But with four distinct singing voices, specifically between Cash and Nelson, harmonizing proved difficult at first. Stuart said he got the idea for the quartet to cover "Highwayman." He brought it to Cash and said, "Listen, four verses, four guys, no harmony required." Cash liked it, as long as he could sing the verse about the starship, Stuart recalled. The friends recorded "Highwayman," and it went on to be the supergroups only No.1 single. The song also won a Grammy Award in 1985 for Best Country Song. And the rest is history👍

I love the message. The sense of adventure and maverick spirit that drives some men to be an outlaw is also the same mentality that makes a fearless worker on dangerous jobs that built essential infrastructure in wild and remote places, explorers that discovered new territories and future men that will explore the stars. These men will always be around, even though the names change through history.

Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings, and Johnny Cash were not only professional colleagues, they were all personal friends for decades...more like Brothers. They all lived on the edge, had their demons, did their music the way they wanted to (instead of what the record company executives wanted, this becoming Outlaws of Country Music), and have a huge following both as individuals and as collaborators. Every one of them is a Country Music Legend.

Jimmy Webb wrote this song. He has written numerous platinum-selling songs, including "Up, Up and Away", "By the Time I Get to Phoenix", "MacArthur Park", "Wichita Lineman", "Worst That Could Happen", "Galveston" and "All I Know". He blessed the supergroup the Highwomen and their recent song "Highwomen," a female-centric version of this song. Watch: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-edQyuO13DlU.html

I admire how your emotion came thru as the song progressed Mr Taylor. You recognized each of our musical hero's as they sang. Many reactors know Willie , Johnny and most recognize Waylon but will ask "who is the other guy", not knowing Kris! You mouthed his name and I clicked the subscribe button. I'll watch any of the artist you react to. You have a new fan. As to how many albums this super group has I'd say as many as The Traveling Wilbury's. Two and maybe enough for a third. They all sing each others songs and that would keep any group busy. They all have many fine tunes. U-Tube is full of their live concerts and many are better than the records. They all have movies to view as well. I'm not an expert on music but have been around long enough to have heard Hank Williams records when he was still alive. To have seen Roy Orbitson sing "Only The Lonely" live and still not know his name. I just knew he was A6 or 7 on the juke box at Woolworths. He was a favorite of mine & Elvis's too. He was opening for The Beatles before most in the USA knew who they were. I love all music and keep finding things I missed growing up! Hail Hail Rock'en & Roll. Amelas One

I’m not a big country guy, but Johnny Cash’s songs never felt country to me.., they felt like a mixture of country but with folklore and stories with music this is one of my favorite stories/song of his A man who keep reincarnating, and slightly becoming a better person each time until he finally reaches his final post where he can either return to his original life or become the very rain but either way his essence will remain and stay in the world. there’s a direct parallel to Jonny himself, even though he’s gone, his music and his legacy still remains with us, coded in his music and his story telling, which lives on. also kudos to waylon jennings who also has passed, and while we still have willie and kris but still, the squad were brilliant in this.

On RU-vid/Vevo there is the Highwaymen's full concert in Nassau, NY, 1990 I believe. It is awesome to see them 'live'. To me, JC will always be THE g.o.a.t. for many reasons - not just his amazing voice but his amazing life as well - his faults, his support of 'minorities' and those less fortunate, and of course the influence he had on SO many performers/musicians, etc. I think those things are what sets him apart, and just above, most other celebrities, people and others of talent. A dive into his life is very worthwhile. But, all of these guys are truly legends. RIP Johnny and Waylon.

I 💜 these guys so much! I think some reactors are soooo not givin Waylon Jennings the credit he deserves!! He has sooo many hits & such a great distinctive voice!! They kind of do the same thing with Hank Williams Jr.! That man has so many great songs that people don't even give a chance! I'm so glad it's completely ingrained in me. These guys spent their time trying to make it, with each other everyday. Heck, some lived with each other. One lady had a house that a lot of people that were trying to make it, used to crash at her house & write & play there. Years later after they made it, she died. Waylon went & payed for everything for her funeral!! They were funny too! Some of their songs are, but they are as well! Hank Williams Jr always pulls his hat down over his ears when he's being silly. Waylon always switches words or adds some, depending on his silliness! Waylon Jennings...Outlaw Bit (true story),Mama's Don't Let Your Babies Grow up to be Cowboys, Amanda, I've Always Been Crazy, Luckenbach (Loo kin bock) Texas, He does a song on the Johnny Cash show when he was extremely young & had his band The Waymores & his later in life wife Jessi Coulter, playing & back-up called, Only Daddy That'll Walk the Line, Are You Sure Hank Done it This Way, Good Hearted Woman, This Time, Wrong, I Ain't Living Long Like This, Just to Satisfy You, Are You Ready For The Country...etc...He also done one with Jessi, way later on & married, live, called Honkey Tonk Angels. It's great! Jessi had a career of her own but left it to follow Waylon & the Outlaw movement. Then she pretty much stayed home. I think she had all she could do to keep Waylon tamed down a bit & raise their son Shooter. I know him from playing this little hole in the wall bar around here. Although Jessi was his 4th & last wife, she was his true love! She put up with a lot & she loved Waylon Jennings better than her life! In all, I believe he had 8 kids. After Waylon passed, 4 generations from Waylon recorded a song. It's crazy now! His remaing kids & grandkids all sing. I know Shooter has some albums & Struggle has a couple. It's amazing that the Jennings, Nelsons, Lynns & Cash children's (probably forget some) sing duets or on albums together, like their father's before them & single careers just like them. Some, I swear, if you had your eyes closed & didn't know any better, you'd think is was their parents! Sorry, you're unfortunate enough to keep having me write books on your videos! lol 🤠 💖

One of ther other hits was '20th Century' by Steve Goodman, an eclectic singer/songwriter who provided songs for many adventurous Nashville singers and died far too you. There was another classic Country called 'The Old Dogs' with Waylon, Jerry Reed, Mel Tillis and Bobby Bare, prob ably known for the humorously fatalistic song 'Still Gonna Die.'

My papa was an absolute savant when it came to building things but he was an unrepentant Luddite. Teaching him how to use what was to me simple technology was a headache and a half. I bought him the simplest CD player boombox in the world back in the early 2000s and proceeded to spend the better part of the day teaching him how to use it. 😂 It was totally worth it though when my grandmother called me the next week to let me know that the man who never spent money on himself went out and bought himself a CD that he proceeded to play on repeat nonstop. That CD was The Highwaymen. He loved all four of them and this was one of his favorite songs.

I've been obsessed with this song since I heard it last week. While I know this is a cover of Jimmy Webb's song, the way it was done by this outlaw country supergroup with each having a verse, the call/response between the lyrics and instruments, the distinction between the first three 'past' verses and Johnny's 'future' verse is so well done. The visual I get when Johnny sings about flying a starship through the universe is so badass. "and when I reach the other side, I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can" leans both into the other side of the universe, but also the other side of life: death. Reincarnation is such an interesting topic for country singers to represent. Even beyond the lyrics, the music itself is quite a bit untraditional to country, which I think is part of why these singers are considered outlaws in the genre. While Webb has outright said it is about reincarnation ("I'll always be around and around and around..." or "I'll be back again and again and again...), I don't think it is a linear tale from Willie, to Kris, to Waylon in the past and then Jonny in the future. I personally interpret it as the undying spirit of man in general, where as one dies, their influence and determination lives on forever in others. I loved your video. I've watched a few reactions to this song since I first heard it and one consistency with them all is the smile we all had as soon as we heard Johnny start in. I personally don't like the video much as it adds some distracting sounds, Willie's portion shows him getting hung way before that happens in the song, and Johnny's portion is shown in a fighter jet when his verse represents the future depicting his character flying a starship across the universe. It also shows all four together at the beginning holding flags on horses and throughout the song as one dies he rides off, first by himself, then with another, then two others, then all four again, which I think is to represent the passing of the spirit from one to the next while the previous never fade away. That linear reincarnation may be what Webb wrote about, but when I see people's first listen accompanied with the video it sort of implants that in your head where had the song been heard without, it may have been interpreted more broadly in these reactions.

They're the Country Mt. Rushmore! lol Waylon died from diabetes complications & had already lost his foot. He died in 2002 at 64. Johnny Cash died in 2003 at 71 from diabetes. Waylon & Johnny were very close! They lived together, done music together & Waylon actually lived with Johnny & June at one point. Kristoff (Kris)Kristofferson is 86. Willie Nelson is 89! If they were all alive today, Willie Nelson 89, Kris 86, Johnny Cash would be just a tad shy of being 93 & Waylon would be 84! I can't believe they were fairly close in age! Johnny was the 2nd youngest to die but he looked older than all of them, by far!! But, I've heard Johnny & others say how much they learned from Waylon! Hank Jr is Indian. He nicknamed Waylon...Watasha. It's a Japanese word meaning "Old number one"!! Hank Williams Jr should be on that Country Mt. Rushmore too! lol 🤠

If you like Willie, many years ago he made a movie called The Red Headed Stranger. Not one for your channel-too long, but t was based on one of his albums. You might enjoy it. The Highwayman made an album.

I've never heard this before. It seems like it's talking about periods in history.

Thank you for allowing others to share in your first experience with all this incredible music. You've helped me to remember the feelings I had when for the first time I was hearing a lot of the songs you are just now discovering. I hope to continue to share your journey,

Good reaction, great song, one of my favs. I have a request though, Dimash- The story of one sky, it's his newest release, its 13-min-long mini movie, extremely well-made, and possibly the best music video ever made, and relevant in our times and hoping this video gets out to everyone in the world, you and other reactors have the power to get this video out there more. Iv seen song by alot of reactors, but not enough for this masterpiece.

Hey Dear, love the song and your reaction! What about turning back to Dimash once again? There were great new songs out, two music videos that I would heavily recommend for you to react to. Some month ago it was "Okay", the video is about the stalinistic era and takes place in 1937. And even more necessary for every human being on earth to watch is Dimash's song "The Story Of One Sky", more than 13 min long, Dimash composed it and wrote the script for the video. He worked three years on that project, and he wants everybody to receive his message. So, please react to both songs, incredible music, singing, and Dimash is getting more and more a fantastic actor as well, incredible how he has matured the last two years.... Thank you, like you a lot!

Check out "Jim, I Wore a Tie Today". It is by Willie and Johnny and though it is credited to 'The Highwaymen" I don't think Waylon and Kris have much of a part, if any, in it. But it's a beautiful song and well worth your reaction.
