Marshall Tucker was a blind black man who tuned pianos . The band named themselves after him when they rented a warehouse and his name was on the key to the door .
@@victorwaddell6530 ... sure is.... been there quite a few times. Wofford College, Converse College, USCS, Panthers training camp, and met lots of hot girls there.Home of former NASCAR superstar David Pearson.Westgate Mall whats left of it LOL..... and home of Dorman University ( errrh.. I mean Dorman High School )..... ohhhh, and I 85 is forever a mess in both directions to Greenville or going North to the Big peach in the city of Gaffney where if GOD were going to give the earth an enema he would stick the tube in Gaffney ,S.C. !😁
I read the lead singer lost 3 family members in 2 weeks and did 3 tours in Viet Nam I listened to this song as a young teen and will NEVER FORGET THIS SONG and band
Whazzuphere, man I loved 38 Special and I have heard others say that. I can see where some people consider them southern rock, I’m just not sure where I put them. Hey doesn’t mean I didn’t love and listen to them a lot! 😁😁
Other than calling him “honey”, I was going to say the same thing. How can ANYONE reacting to this song call it a “love song”. Shittiest reaction to this song I’ve seen. Hitting the “do not recommend channel” option so I can avoid hearing this guy talk about what he believes to be a love song. Shit.
Band full of Vietnam Vets, the lead singer Toy Caldwell was awarded a Purple Heart but refused an offer to go home early, and returned to his unit until his tour ended.
Notice how Toy plays the guitar with his thumb. A Marine with a Bronze Star with a 'V' for valor and Purple Heart awarded in Nam. After bein' wounded, he went back to his unit to finish his tour when he had a chance to come home. I believe he died in the early 2 thousands.
I'd call this a love song - she tore his heart out, stomped it flat and fed it back to him as chicken fried steak, yet he still loved her. She's done him wrong time and again but - He still loves that woman. He loves her yet he's got to hide from that love any way he possibly can. Men today would just step out and find something friendly on the side, but this man? No. No matter what, he still loves her. It's one of their versions of a love song.
Toi Caldwell is also a Marine Veteran who tore it up in Vietnam. Came back to the USA When it sucked to be Veteran. And then did it right by making some top 40 songs, .. Rock n Roll never forget's !!!
They’re still together….. not everyone but half, and the rest their children and the like from the neighborhood……… Greetings from South Carolina!!!!! Love you!!!!!! Keep killlin it!!!!!! Saw them last night at free concert they threw on for the town we are all from!!! Coolest thing I have seen ever, because literally the WHOLE town showed up!!!!! It was their 50th anniversary, and a gift to the family and everyone for the support all these years!!!!! Look it up….. Marshall Tucker Band free concert Spartanburg, SC ….. you will love it!!!!! Happy 50th MTB!!!!!!!
I'm 60 years old and grew up on this music. It is so refreshing to see young people discover this music and the reactions are awesome!! Check out the Allman Brothers (Midnight Rider, Tied to the Whipping Post) Stormy Monday, Melissa) and Lynyrd Skynyrd ( Sweet Home Alabama, Simple Man, Curtis Lowe. Freebird)
You don't have to be fast and loud to be heavy. Toy Caldwell pours it all out. Phenomenal musicianship, great song, powerful emotion. Just a timeless classic.
This was recorded in my hometown at the Grand Opera House in Macon, Ga. Back in the 70's Capricorn Records had a lot of successful artists there, including The Allman Brothers, Percy Sledge, Elvin Bishop, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Wet Willie, and many more.
Absolutely the best.....hate your woman song. Toy is outstanding on the Gibson...and the singing from the whole group melts my brain. God bless those boys!
One of my all time favorite songs, it's timeless, and it never gets old. Great Southern Rock with a teaspoon of country and a teaspoon of the blues added for extra flavor.
How is this a love song? This is a Vietnam Vet singing about all his buddies getting Dear John letters while serving their country. The woman in the song represents all of them!
Toy, lead singer and lead guitar player..served 2 tours in Vietnam..was wounded and received Purple Heart..wrote the song because of all the Dear John letters the guys in his Unit were receiving..after Vietnam..formed the band..dropped this song..Toy died in April 1980s..believe Toy was 26 when he died
The Marshall Tucker Band was second only to The Allman Brothers Band. A great band. I had the privilege of seeing the original band. Nothing flashy about them, just great music.
The lead singer, Toy Caldwell, was a Marine who was wounded in action in Vietnam and returned to duty two weeks after being wounded. After he left the Marines the Marshall Tucker Band was formed.
Don't pressure yourself, just listen and enjoy or not.... just be you. So now I will be bold and suggest. Neil Young: Old man, Needle's Damage Done, Don't Let it Bring you down. The man has existential soul....and God gifted talent
I was probably there! 😂 I saw them so many times in the 70’s. Everyone did. Thanks for the flashback, although I still listen to them on the regular . Southern rock is the genre of my high school years, and lord it was fun. 🤘🏼🎸❤️
One of my favorite bands. Southern rock with a little jazz. Just an FYI- got their name from where the band was practicing that had a key with the name attached of Marshall Tucker.
Good ol boy blues.love it.what a time in history that will never happen again. Music was Music. No politics. Real instruments real talent real people real good.
Marshall Tucker is like 95 yrs. old, Doug Gray was the singer, guitarist Toy Caldwell ( founding member) died in 1993, his brother Tommy the bassist died in 1980. They became famous when they toured with The Allman Brothers Band in the 70’s. Most of their albums went gold then they had a major breakout song called Heard it in a Love Song that really sent them off. After Toys death they had members leave and go their own way, but the rest who stayed went on with new members and made it last through the early 2000’s.
Bill yes I was aware he had. I remembered hearing something of him about going into the military. It’s been a while ago, so I can’t really remember all of it.
Great live version of this song; it is 'different' way of saying things most every human can relate to, its just in different words and presentation, but anyone who listen to this song, has probably felt those feelings being portrayed in this song. Which is why it stands the test of time. because, most all have "been there" before. The band still going strong, minus the lead singer, who sadly died i think in the late 1990s...but they still are together, as far as what ive seen, they were on concert in a cruise somewhere recently.
I saw The Marshall Tucker Band in 2003 or 2004 at The House of Blues, in Myrtle Beach. Unfortunately, the lead singer of this song and guitarist, Toy Caldwell had passed away. He was only in his 40s when he passed. I’m not sure what members are still with us.
Vocalist Doug Gray and,sax and flute player Jerry Eubanks, and drummer Paul T.Riddle are the only ones still alive from the original line up. Only Doug is still in the current Marshall Tucker Band, but his vocals are not what they used to be,due to surgery, and all the vocals are shared.
Both Caldwell brothers in the band died tragically very young as well as their younger brother who wasn't in the band but also died in a tragic crash before Tommy and Toy died, and also George McKorkle died of cancer a few years later. They are all buried at the Greenlawn cemetery off Hwy. 29 behind the Hillcrest Mall.So sad... R.I.P.
Doug and Paul had lunch couple weeks ago with my bosses dad, (Franklin Wilie- a former bass player for MTB, he filled in after Tommy died. They're still playing music, separately, but still at it on their 70s
Toy Caldwell, is one of the most underrated guitarists. Notice he plays with the bare thumb in the downward direction only. I believe the flute player, Jerry Eubanks, and the drummer, Paul Riddle are both still alive. The singer, Doug Grey, still tours.
You can’t go wrong with some good old southern rock. We had some wonderful music to listen to back in the day. We had folk we had funk, we had Motown we had R&B, we had rock we had southern rock, we had disco you name it we had it.
Twon, making my morning! Charlie Daniels and now, Marshal Tucker (Southern Rock). Two very deep Rabbit Holes to jump in! This would be a blast to watch you discover.
Hey man I don't know if you've checked out the Allman Brothers Band yet but "Whipping Post" and "Dreams" are a couple of bangers from them in this same kinda genre. They are definitely the greatest southern rock/blues band in music.
I saw Marshall Tucker for about the fourth time 5 or 6 years ago. The main singer was still singing. I still listen to their music and I think if listen to more of them, you will appreciate them more.
Yo da best. This really is a homage to the BLUES songs of such African American blues artists as John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, and Howlin Wolf .. . ("That woman is giving me the blues ..")
Graduated High School 1974, and heard them live in Georgia. I might be old T’Won, but I had the best music! And quiet as it’s kept I was on the ground floor of your success too!
WHEN YOU HEAR THIS SONG AGAIN ON RADIO OR WHEREVER YOU WILL NEVER FORGET IT: DOUG GRAY IS STILL ALIVE AND I THINK THE FLUTE PLAYER IS ALIVE TOO, HIS NAME IS JERRY EUBANKS. I MET THEM WHEN I WAS YOUNG AND ACTUALLY IN CLOSE QUARTERS IN A SMALL BAR BEFORE THEY MADE IT BIG! HE ALSO LET SHOWED ME SOME LICKS ON GUITAR AND LET ME TRY PLAY IT! GREAT GUYS AND I WILL ALWAYS LOVE THEM. THANKYOU FOR THE REVIEW AND NICE JOB YOU DID!
Toy Caldwell - the fastest thumb in the south. MTB mixed blues, jazz, & western, into their brand of southern rock, Imo, every song on Carolina Dreams is a winner. Searchin' For A Rainbow is a MTB must. If you listen closely, you just might hear it in a love song. ; )
