I'd completely forgotten this band over the years. I'm really starting to feel my age when listening to some of these classics. A time when talent instead of technology ruled the airwaves and stages. No auto-tune, lip sync or dependency on being flashy. Just plain old talent.

I started listening to Marshall Tucker band back in the 70s when I was in college. Became an instant fan even though I never cared for anything even close to country music before. These guys were different. They rocked. I still listen to all their old albums. Of course the band was never the same after the Caldwell brothers died.

I'm from an hr up I85 from their hometown of Spartanburg, SC. Growing up in the 70's their music was played heavily in my household. Being from their area I've seen them live many times, met them backstage at a concert in Charlotte NC in late 80's before Toy Caldwell passed. In fact their autograph's are framed on the wall in my music corner. Very humble, nice group of guy's. Typical southern gents.

A flute in a southern rock/blues band? It doesn't seem to make sense, yet it is a perfect, mournful, haunting sound. "Can't You See" has been in my playlist for years. This was such a great era of music! MTB is timeless. Keep it up Syde! You are a constant encouragement with your love and respect of all kinds of music! God bless!!

Drama, that's Toy Caldwell - "The fastest thumb in the south". That's his brother Tommy next to him on bass, Toy did most of the song writing, but the guy on the far end - Doug Gray - most often sang lead. That's Jerry Eubanks on the flute and George McCorkle on rhythm guitar. Drummer is Paul Riddle. I loved these guys. They blended genres and instruments into their songs that made their brand of Southern Rock unique. Anything off of "Carolina Dreams" is great. Played that album to death. You sometimes forget just how awesome the '70s were. RIP to the MTB members who have passed. Charlie can play fiddle for you guys.

Toy Caldwell. He was a Marine rifleman in Vietnam. He was awarded a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. As you can see, the didn't use a guitar pick. He didn't use a wah wah pedal. He didn't use a whammy bar. He used his thumb. He wrote this song. Greg Allman shot himself in the foot to prevent being drafted into the army.

Hey man, I'm an old school southern rocker, actually joined the military in the early 70s to get a free trip around the world and jam, that was a good move cause I've met several members from MT, skynyrd, outlaws,ect...I'm glad to see you and younger generations digging this style of music, cause it's REAL, and from the heart, you asked about the singer Toy Caldwell, well he was drafted into Vietnam, when he got out him and his brother put the band together, for some reason Toy decided to take himself out which seems to be popular with a lot of southern rockers unfortunately, Doug Gray does most of the singing now, Southern Rock is greatly influenced by other cultures and glad you are sharing it, sounds a lot better than a car that sounds like it's got busted speakers playing wide open, most Southern Rock is written by poor folks who lived what they write about, thanks for what you do,..peace✌

The Caldwell brothers were from Moore South Carolina about 30 miles from where I live and I have always had kin living in Moore and would ride by an old two story brick school house that they used to record some of their songs in. I remember hearing on the radio years ago back in the 70's that they got their name by one of the brothers finding a keyring in an abandoned car shed or barn and the keyring had the name, "Marshall Tucker" on it and they named the band after the name on the keyring.

First reaction I’ve seen from you, and the hook was Marshall Tucker Band (my 3 year old is named Tucker). Learning this was #2 for you after hearing Fire on the Mountain...I must say you’ve got a good ear. Took you to church was what this band could do every night, and that’s powerful. I’m almost 40 and I’m way too young to have known in person, but I know someone who did and they have given me all the old recordings. Truly one of the best bands of the 60’s and 70’s....the greatest eras of music IMO. Do yourself a favor a huge favor and at worst find “Stompin Room Only” by the Marshall Tucker Band. I think it’s on iTunes and whatnot. You think Toy Caldwell has vocals...wait till you hear Doug Grey in the magnificent cover of “The Thrill Is Gone”. Man the blues’ll take you away on that album. I hope you find it and give it a listen. Thanks for the video. I really enjoyed it.
