This was looked down upon by the country music folks back in the 70's - NOW they can't duplicate it even as they try over and over again. Lynyrd Skynyrd - the Outlaws - Molly Hatchet - 38 Special - Nobody can touch them today.
I actually did enjoy hearing your dad talking. We now know where you got your gift of gab. Hugs to you both. This is one of my favorite bands of Southern Rock.
At first I was surprised that Dad didn’t already know this song. And then I realized that Dad is younger than me, and I’m probably the same age as the “older gentleman” in the other car. Lawd.
LOL That's the shit right there! Sounds sweet don' it! This music aint changed much in 200 years, just got electrified in the 50's. It's as American as Jazz, Gospel and Blues and I will love it til I die! Listen to that melodic bass!
Toy's solos on this song always make me think that it's what Sir Pterry had in mind when he wrote, "The guitar screamed like an angel who had just discovered why it was on the wrong side." GNU Toy Caldwell GNU Terry Pratchett
The inimitable, "Thunder Thumb", the late Toy Caldwell on guitar and vocals. He was the driving force in the band. His brother, the late Tommy Caldwell on bass, also playing with his thumb! Their father also played, using his thumb! A family tradition.
Can't believe there are still people just discovering this great music. I'm 57 and grew up on Southern rock like Marshall Tucker Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Allman Brothers. The Marshall Tucker Band is from my state of South Carolina. Glad that you like it. Southern rock is basically a fusion of country, rock, blues.
Toy Caldwell lost both his younger brothers Tim and Tommy (bass player) within a month of each other to car accidents in 1980. He was also a United States Marine Corps Vietnam War combat vet (WIA). That's him singing with incredible soul and thumbpicking that beautiful Gibson Les Paul. Thank you for everything brother. Rest easy.
More Marshall Tucker please"fire on the mountain","heard it in a love song","take the highway","searchin for a rainbow","24 hours at a time","this ol cowboy". Toy Caldwell on vocals and lead guitar. Yes he plays with his thumb. RIP Toy and Tommy Caldwell ☮️
They just don't make'em like this anymore. Original southern rock. Toy Caldwell you're missed. Thank your dad for being in the right place at the right time, sir! Thanks for reacting to this.
Wore their albums out in college and saw them in concert three times! Toy Caldwell, the singer, died in 1993 and his brother Tommy, who was the bass player, died in 1980.
Great reaction with your Dad. MTB had so many great songs. I have to rank them 2nd to the Allman Brothers on my all time Southern Rock artists. Did you know that Toy Caldwell who is the lead guitarist only sang a few of their songs, Can't You See being one of them. Wait till you hear the golden voice of Doug Gray, lead singer of MTB! And Jerry Eubanks the flute player also plays Sax on their songs ! Here are a few more songs you might react to by MTB. Desert Skies Heard It In A Love Song 24 Hours At A Time Take The Highway
Southern Rock at it’s best. One of the top Southern Rock bands of the seventies.....(Allman Brothers, CCR, ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Grand Fun Railroad) Lots of great music...Southern Rock was never my biggest genre, but truckloads of respect to this group....Love the vocalist....so soulful.
Saw toy & company almost every time they came to so cal. Blew the roof off most nights!!!! It’s a crime they are not in the r&r hall of fame - one of my all time faves!!!
Great choice, Dad! 👍 "Heard It In A Love Song" is another good MTB track, but definitely a little less rock, a little more country. Toy Caldwell and the boys created something amazing with "Can't You See" but is it the apex of Southern Rock? I don't think you've heard enough to decide that, yet. Allman Brothers: "One Way Out" (at Fillmore East); "Blue Sky"; "Statesboro Blues"; "Jessica"; "Ramblin' Man"; "Midnight Rider". And then there's the Skynyrd catalogue, not to mention ZZ Top and others. Lots of incredible stuff left to discover.
Born & raised in Memphis but was never a country, or even countrified, music fan. Grew up with blues, rhythm & blues, rock n roll, and rock. But... Love these guys (and, in a similar vein, The Allman Brothers). In fact, this song is one of my all time faves that I never get tired of. So unique and simultaneously ragged, rough, and angelically beautiful. Another great reaction Dad & son-- and I'd never seen this live before, so thank you!!!
I love seeing new people discovering the music that raised me.I like your dad.He should join you more often.I was wondering why he didn't know who Marshall Tucker is.
Southern Rock Band That's what we called them back in the day! I was 12 when this song came out and I loved the song, But it was even better a couple years later after my first heartbreak! OMG, what a great song!
Early version of country rock, this band really had great songs. I saw them a couple of times and they were just awesome live. Excellent musicianship from these guys with addictive vocals.
:) Another great reaction!! I love the old southern rock. ♡ This song is definitely one of the best. Had the album & played the whole thing repeatedly. Way back in 1983, our house burned down, lost all of our earthly possessions... this album was one of the things I missed the most! :) Our son was just 1&1/2 years old. It was the day before Thanksgiving ~ one of the best Thanksgivings I've ever had, because the 3 of us made it out alive. (Along with our puppy!♡)
Oh Dad finding another gem, I absolutely love this song, still have the album, (but no turntable anymore) there was a wealth of great bands out of America at this time that reached us here in the UK, as well as Creedence and Lynard we had the Marshall Tucker Band, Pure Prairie League, Outlaws and Ozark Mountain Daredevils and more, all really deserve a great shout out, thanks for this reaction, fantastic to see them and hear them again,
Great reaction guys, and yes - Toy Caldwell was a legend on the guitar,Mr.Thunderthumb - he was in a league of his own,the same as Duane Allman from The Allman Brothers Band was. Even Toys brother Tommy on bass, played with his thumb,as it was the way they were taught. The Marshall Tucker Band surely deserve to be in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, but it is not the institution it once was. Theres plenty of MTB to react to,especially with main vocalist Doug Gray and his amazing vocal capabilities. Take your pick to react to anything from their 70's early 80's period and you wont be disappointed.Oh and by the way - the actual Marshall Tucker, whom the band was named after, just turned 94 I think ? this past week - amazing, and Doug Gray was there to celebrate with him .
Marshall Tucker Band is a great choice ! Southern rock at it's best as these boys were from Spartanburg, SC. And yes, definitely some more Allman Brothers please ! ✌❤🌻😷🎶
Got to see the MTB multiple times in the 70s. They're a great concert band. The last time I saw them with Black Oak Arkansas and Charlie Daniels, both good southern rock bands.
I may have commented on this before but anyway I used to drive down to the Sitar club in Spartanburg s.c to see these guys. They were known as the Toy Factory in those days.
I don't generally go in for a lot of C&W music. But one of my favorites is MTB's Heard It In A Lovesong. Sonically, it runs the gamut from traditional Nashville country to blue grass to New Orleans keys to hints of zydeco and a good dash of southwest Tex-Mex flavor in there as well. MTB was one of the more versatile country groups back in the day.
Marshall Tucker Band was friends with Charlie Daniels, Allman Brothers and Skynyrd. They were discovered by Wet Willie. Charlie Daniels and Toy Caldwell were very good friends. Toy Caldwell helped Charlie along when he was first touring. Charlie Daniels opened for Marshall Tucker sometimes until Charlie became a headliner himself. Toy used to play at Charlie's Volunteer Jams. Toy helped Hank Williams Jr. with his first album that he did when he stopped doing his dad's music. Toy played with Lynyrd Skynyd when the did their reunion tour. Toy Caldwell was a multi talented musician. He wrote the majority of the Marshall Tucker songs. He could play pedal steel as well as the guitar. His biography and history is very diverse and interesting.
Key ring? Legend as it that someone in the band grabbed a receipt out of a garbage bin in a studio they were recording in. It was a receipt from a piano tuner, named Marshall Tucker.
Toy Caldwell, lead guitarist, is singing this one although Doug Gray is considered the usual lead singer. Tommy Caldwell, Toy's younger brother is on bass. I recommend listening to "Everyday I Have The Blues" from their debut/eponymous album. So glad you enjoyed this!
GO FINS!!!!!!!!! Hell yeah!!!!! Love you so much more because of how cool your dad is! You're ok, you've got a good start (keep with the grateful dead)..
Oh yes takes me back, Classic Rock a time when bands were raw, talented, and made you feel the music. Just a great Jam, Loved it. Love the Father and son fun. Peace
For a really unique musical experience, try Ozark Mountain Daredevils,If you want to get to heaven (you gotta raise a little hell)live at old grey whistle and Jackie Blue.Ask your dad to join you.
Part of the country rock wave in the mid 70s. I met this band briefly in Houston, TX. Very friendly bunch. There was a bit tragedy involved with this band, a death.
MTB blended genres of blues, jazz & country into their Southern Rock sound beautifully. One of the best bands ever. Catch EVERYthing off of the "Carolina Dreams" album. And of course "Searchin' For A Rainbow" from the album of the same name. RIP Toy Caldwell (The fastest thumb in the South), preceded in death by his brother Tommy (playing bass next to Toy), Rhythm guitarist George McCorkle has also passed. God rest their souls. So thankful we still have their music.
First! Okay, Second! Great choice! Southern Rock jam. This song could have gone on for 20 minutes and we would still want more! Loved seeing bands like this having fun.
Man, Daniel....you are just keeping us on the hook with dangling that succulent worm in front of us with the Live Aid Queen segment aren’t you? Yeah, I know you have two more songs to get under your belt and you’re doing them in one segment.....but I keep expecting it. You’re toying with us! 😂
MTB was a wonderful band to see live way back in the day! Doug Gray's (lead vocals) enthusiasm is absolutely contagious. No frills, no flash just straight up damn good music. Their debut album is a true classic - not a bad song on it. And both Caldwell brothers played with just their thumbs and Toy was also a master steel guitar player - check out 'See You Later I'm Gone'.
Toy Caldwell, the singer and guitar player only played with his thumb, no pick. He was also a former marine who recieved a purple heart while he was in Vietnam 5 years before this.
"Long Hard Ride" for a jam on an album with the same name (Long Hard Ride); and on the same album "Windy City Blues" or "See You One More Time" both excellent tunes! Enjoy these guys were very talented.
Marshall Tucker band are great. On the flip side of this song their song This ok Cowboy. He tells the girl, this ain't the first time this ol cowboy spent the night alone. Their lyrics are are great for their genre. Heard it in A Love Song is another great example of great lyrics
Daniel, for you and your dad - try Molly Hatchet "Flirtin' With Disaster". Southern rock, but where "Can't You See" is almost introspective by comparison, the Molly Hatchet tune is an in-your-face rock song.
Another reactor did this last week he had the same clitch in the video so it wasn't on your end. We Are Legion good to see Papa Deathstroke again 👍✌️♥️ "take to the highway" another song by them
Please do more Marshall Tucker. Desert Skies is my favorite, but they have a great catalogue. I love your Dad for suggesting this. Great personality and seems very proud. Don't put Marshall Tucker out to pasture, keep searching. DESERT SKIES in the future please and thanks. PEACE
Love this reaction and love the song! It's nice to see your dad again. The stare into the camera was priceless 😂 Are you also planning on having your mom on for a reaction? Keep up the good work and I will share your videos. You deserve a lot more subscribers.
Marshall Tucker is great. I'll make a suggestion if you like great guitar and emotional vocals: Joe Bonamassa and Beth Hart on "I'd Rather Go Blind." A fantastic version of the great Etta James classic, but a classic in its own right as one of the finest live performances you will ever find. Of course, it's blues, so a little different genre.
1970s Southern Rock at it's Best. Marshall Tucker Band, Charlie Daniels Band, Lynard Skynard as well. It sure brings back some memories from another era. Thank You.
this song was used in Busch beer commercials for long time.it always amused me they used the line gonna climb a mountain repeatedly when the next line he says he's gonna jump off
I got to see MTB in concert once, I believe in the early 80's and loved the show. Their Carolina Dreams album was great, all songs worth a listen. Great to see Dad rocking along with Daniel instead of being teary eyed.
