You two are FULL of #1 hits lately! This one hit #1 in 1976. Great song, great band!!! LES PAUL himself was Steve's godfather, and he taught Steve how to play. A legend teaching a *future* legend in his youth!!!
Hey Jay and Amber, great songs from Steve Miller band. I really want to suggest 2 more great songs from Steve. Fly Like an Eagle, one of his earliest and Jet Airliner.
Steve Miller grew up in Texas, with essential Southern Blues players being frequent visitors to his house. He moved to San Francisco to create the band and so has both deep blues influences covered in psychedelia for a very unique sound. ✌️
Steve Miller used to live on Mercer Island in Seattle. A good friend of mine used to work at a local guitar shop and Steve would come on in sometimes to buy new strings. This was back in 80's
Now for the Steve Miller Band ferocious foursome of this period-Fly Like An Eagle, Jungle Love, Swingtown and Jet Airliner which paves the way for the Abracadabra sound.
The song Amber is thinking of is "Take The Money and Run". She's probably heard "Take It On The Run" which is also a great song by R.E.O. Speedwagon and mixing them up. Side note, I met R.E.O. singer Kevin Cronin at a celebrity golf tournament and helped him and Ryan Stiles and a couple others close the bar down. Fun guy.
Yeah, I kinda figured someone already pointed out that Amber was mixing up the two songs! We'll give her the pass as she's just so damn cute! I DO know why she doesn't like Abracadabra as much as some of the others. I feel the same way as that song is good, but it has to be about 20th on my favorites list of Steve Miller songs! It just has such tough competition...
Oh yeah! Steve Miller Rocks! I saw them in concert in the mid 90s The Doobie Brothers opened up for them. Wild mountain honey and dance dance dance are great songs too.
I saw the Indianapolis (IN) show on that tour (Steve Miller Band & the Doobie Bros. w/Michael McDonald). Both bands did a "greatest hits" playset... it was clearly a fan-friendly tour. It was a great time!
I LOVE Stevie Guitar Miller! I saw them at the Shoreline Theater in Mountain View, Ca a million years ago and genuinely thought that I had a religious experience!
My suggestion for a fifth song is Fly like an eagle. Listen to the original version though. I feel it has the same vibe as this song as far as making you just float away with the music! Much love in my heart for the robsquad family. PS: the perfect version has the same thumbnail image as this song.
Yes!!! Get the original song... the versions on the greatest hits clip the song. If you can get a version with the full introduction called Space Intro is the best... that was how it was on the original album it was released on. Here is a video with the intro and the full song. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-q3-PFDt65sY.html
Interesting story of Steve's ability to control a situation, I saw the Steve Miller band in 1973 (The Joker was his current album) at the U of Penn indoor venue. The security and the crowd up front were getting into what easily could have been violence. Steve stopped the band in mid song, sent the band off stage & told his guitar tech to bring him his acoustic. He sat on a high stool addressed the security saying calm down these are just kids & addressed the crowd to say security were just doing their job & everyone needs to calm down. He proceeded to play a few tunes on the acoustic, finished, then called the band back out & they finished the set. I was impressed, I was a fan from their first album (you should check out the solo work of both Boz Scaggs & Ben Sidran from the early Steve Miller Band), but that cemented my fanhood. Also Rick Roberts by himself was the warm up, he was in Zephry, Flying Burrito Brothers & Firefall. What a concert!
Now THAT is what you call crowd control. Top notch of him to be aware of what was going on and doing what was needed to calm down the situation. I remember the days of "festival" seating. When we saw Zeppelin back in the mid 70s in Houston, the venue was configured for festival seating (NO seats).. for being only 15, I was well aware of problems and deaths that had occurred prior when fans rushed the stage and we were right up front, but it all went off without any problem luckily.. so sad that kids have to lose their lives needlessly. Thanks for that great story!
@@connieb4372 I wasn't even aware till he stopped the band mid song & talked the situation down, we were seated close to the stage but to his right. My eyes were on him. The 70's were a trip, our youth had some killer bands. I'm glad you saw Zeppelin, I saw them in Madison Square Garden and they put on a great show, probably same tour as you. Have a great day!
That "unique & authentic" thing you pick up from some of the classic rock groups is time served playing dives, small clubs & venues. They toured & not in luxury before the big break. You are hearing musicians & singers who already are comfortable with their instruments & stage presence. Makes a huge impact🙂
The band was formed in California but Miller was born in Milwaukee. His parents were close friends with guitar virtuoso Les Paul and his wife Mary Ford. They were best man and matron of honor at the Paul/Ford wedding and Les Paul was Steve’s godfather. They moved to Dallas in 1950 and Mr. Miller, who was a pathologist and recording engineer, had many distinguished musicians come to their house to record. Young Steve absorbed much from "greats" such as T-Bone Walker, Charles Mingus, and Tal Farlow. Walker taught Steve how to play his guitar behind his back and also with his teeth in 1952. His classmate in prep school was Boz Skaggs who Steve taught guitar chords so he could join Miller and his brother Buddy’s band.
Steve Miller Band from Dallas! He and Boz Scaggs were contemporaries from Big D. Great party music! You haven't heard Fly Like An Eagle yet. Joy will have a new favorite (fancy that!).
Yeah, you just can't go wrong with his greatest hits album. They could just find a playlist of it on RU-vid and start picking songs they haven't heard yet. Every one of them is solid gold.
You'll really enjoy an early hit from the Steve Miller Band, "Livin' in the USA" from 1968. It's got a great bluesy groove to it & a killer harmonica intro. Love your vibes!
Steve Miller was born and raised in the Dallas Texas area and attended St Marks School for boys in his first couple of years in High School and while there he and fellow schoolmate Boz Scaggs formed a band then later Steve got the heive ho from St Marks and finished his schooling at DISD Woodrow Wilson High School which has many notables in music go to school there and it’s also the only public High School in the country that has boasted two Heisman Trophy winners.
Some other Steve Miller Band, different from this, but worthwhile: "Your Saving Grace", "Kow Kow" and "Seasons". Not to mention "Jet Airliner". Thanks for the reaction.
"Jungle Love" is my Favorite. "You Treat Me like I was Your Ocean, You swim in my blood when it's warm. My cycles of circular motion, protect You and keep You from harm, We live in a world of illusion, where everything's peaches, and cream, we all face a scarlet conclusion, but we spend our time in a dream" Yeah, it's Your New Favorite Too.😎
Loving all the classic recommendations for Steve Miller. His slower stuff is just as good too! You guys should check out "I Want to Make the World Turn Around," "Winter Time" or "Wild Mountain Honey."
Ohh, I remember this song! It must be 40 plus years since I heard this (released in 1976). I like it, but I'm with Jay...... "Abaracada" is my favourite, released in 1982. I was 18 years old. 🎼🎸🎤
I love the Steve Miller Band! Speaking of songs that have dips I suggest Blinded By the Light by The Manfred Mann Band. I could listen to that one over and over and never get tired of it. Keep on rocking Rob Squad! ❤❤
So many great Steve Miller songs for you to check out! “Fly Like An Eagle”(long version a must!), “Swing Town”, “Jungle Love”, “Jet Airliner”.. just to name a few. Great reaction, guys!
I have seen Steve Miller Band many, many times in the 70s and into the 80s, in Seattle. The part of this song that goes, "Driving from Phoenix , AZ on my way to Tacoma", always got a loud, thunderous cheer from the Seattle audience. Miller lived in the Seattle area in the mid to late 70s. Last I heard he was living around Medford, OR. I would say he likes living in the Pacific North West. There's a lot of good Steve Miller song suggestions here, and I love them all. However, one of his songs that would get played at parties is a song called, Dance, Dance, Dance, which I highly recommend.
Great all time hit band lead by the great Steve Miller The Joker was the first for me then i was hooked ever since through Abracadabra to now great guitar
Other than "The Joker" everything on the Greatest Hits is off of two albums. Both "Book of Dreams" and "Fly Like an Eagle" are cover to cover, there are songs you will miss when you get the Hits album.
I will say I love his “Nobody but You” from the ‘80s…definitely a catchy tune, and if it had been recorded earlier in the ‘70s would have fit in quite well with the rest of the Greatest Hits album.
I agree that "Fly Like an Eagle" and "Jungle Love" should be heard. I like this one, but I like the other two that I mentioned, and "Abracadabra" better. 🙂
When I was in 7th and 8th grade, the school bus had an 8 track tape player and the bus driver would play one of two tapes: Bob Seger's Stranger in Town, and Steve Miller's Greatest Hits. Rock'n me baby > old time rock'n'roll on loop. Brings me back.
My favorite song by Steve Miller by far is Space Cowboy. There is an incredibly catchy guitar rif through virtually the entire song. Some great great drumming and of course Steve's guitar leads.
I love the Steve Miller Band but this is absolutely without question and by far 100% my favorite Steve Miller song. It's actually one of my favorite songs in general. The crazy thing is after watching this video, I've been a big Steve Miller fan for many years and had no idea that he sang Sunglasses at night. That's crazy
Kathie says…Thank you both for such a GREAT program!!! I always enjoy listening to the MUSIC IF MY LIFE with you! I am 72 years old and grew up listening to this awesome music…Country…Rock and Roll…R & B…Motown…Big Bands…Doo Wop…all my favorites ❤️ When I Listen with you, (music that I am passionate about and have listened to for years) makes me feel like I am hearing these songs for the very first time. Rob and Amber, you have a GIFT in what you do!! Thank you for sharing it!!🥰God Bless You and Your Precious Little Family 🙏🏻🌷
At the State Fair of Texas (late 70’s) they had a new attraction called a laser light show….the music they played was Steve Miller Band …. From that day forward I drew the SMB flying horse all of my book covers (even the ones made from grocery bags)
I smoked my Very first Joint listening to this song . In in 1965 Mustang with a 302 BOSS engine . We were headed to the California Beach . With the Sons of my Dad's new Girlfriend . My Dad and their Mother was already there . Oh Man that was a BLAST . I was 16 in 1977 . 1 year Later I was in the Army at 17
"20th Century Man", "Mercury Blues" are two of my favorites, from Steve. He first came on the scene, as a Blues guitarist. John Lee Hooker's studio album "Endless Boogie" is mainly a jam session, with Blues and Jazz musicians, including Steve Miller, backing him up. Many great tracks, on the album. My favorite, "Doin' the Shout". Nice reviews, J & A ! 😎👍
Met my Angel, in 94, our first date was Red Rocks Colorado, August 23, the Steve Miller Band !! 5 years later we were married, and we are still Best Friends. She is my life, and inspiration, and still makes my heart skip a beat. 🙏🏻
