There were multiple versions of this song released. As you can imagine, you can't get away with singing "funky shit" on the radio, so the edited version was changed to "funky kicks". There is also a version for "pop radio" that edited out the long guitar intro and had the lyrical edit. Thank you for selecting this version. When I saw the thumbnail, I feared the worst. That was the first greatest hits album artwork, which had the shortest, lyrically edited version. However, the one on the Book of Dreams" album is preceded by the song "Threshold", which flows right into "Jet Airliner". That is the best version, much like "Space Intro" preceding "Fly Like An Eagle".

@@jdevanzo I appreciate what Paul Pena did, but I'm not one of those people that insist the first person always did it the best. His version to me comes off too discordant as if he can't figure out if he's doing blues or rock n roll and comes off confused as to what it wants to be. Such a great tune! Paul Pena wrote this song. It was so popular he was able to live off the royalties. He was almost completely blind since he was born and taught himself to play guitar. And played with BB King and Bonnie Raitt as well.. He was only 55 when he died back in the early 2000's. Excellent reaction as always.
@marklee1522
@marklee1522 2 года назад
The link was Ben Sidran, a fine musician who had played in bands with Steve Miller and Boz Scaggs. He spent a little time working as a recording engineer and he recorded the original Paul Pena track. When Paul's record company refused to release Paul's album it was circulated among musicians by Sidran who found fans like Raitt and Steve Miller who recorded songs like Jet Airliner and Gotta Move. Paul's music did eventually get released decades later and he even had a little tour and a triumphant appearance on Conan O'Brien. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4dnGj5YF8F0.html

So here's my little "brush with celebrity" story about Steve Miller: Stevie "Guitar" Miller used to own a home in the Seattle area and I was part of the team that installed the computer networking backbone for his house. Only saw him a couple of times during the process but he was gracious, funny and more than generous with his time when I asked him about some of the guitars he had just sitting around the house. There used to be a recording studio in downtown Seattle called Kaye-Smith Studios - the "Kaye" was the actor Danny Kaye who starred in many classic American comedy films. One of my all time favourites - and I'd argue one of the best American comedy films ever made - is called "The Court Jester". I cannot recommend this film highly enough! It features some great names such as Angela Landsbury (Murder, She Wrote), Glynis Johns (Mr. Banks in the original Mary Poppins), Basil Rathbone (Sherlock Holmes) and Alan Napier (Alfred the Butler on the 1960s Batman TV show) to name a few of the actors who make this a fantastic, family friendly and timeless comedy.

Artist used to arrange songs in a specific order to make an album more enjoyable as a whole. They would use a slower song to set up a more upbeat song. Some would even have the whole album built around a theme, or to tell a story from beginning to end. Nowadays it’s all about getting airplay for one song to convince kids that it’s the latest hit so that they will buy it, actually making it a “hit”…at least for this week.

It's a testament to how much great music Steve was cranking out in that short period. The only problem I have with that comp, is that many of the songs are edited. I could understand it for the LP or cassette versions, but a CD holds almost 80 minutes, far less than the 14 songs on that comp had, but they put the same lineup on CD, when it came out. I think they released a newer comp (possibly even 2 CDs) in more recent years (and retired the old 74-78 comp), but I don't know whether they used the edited versions or not. Hopefully, they used the original LP versions.

Paul Pena recorded "Jet Airliner" in 1973. The Boeing 707 was still a common passenger plane at that time. The 707 was in production until 1979. The song was written about Pena's flight from Boston to Montreal to play with T-Bone Walker's band. It is most likely that flight was on a 707. Today the 707 is mostly used by the US Military. The first jumbo jet, the Boeing 747, entered service in 1970 for Pan American Airways (Pan AM). The first 747 that landed at our local Airport (YVR) was in January 1971. I remember going to the airport with the family to see the gigantic plane. Led Zeppelin used a Boeing 720 (a variation of the 707) called the Starliner for it tours in the 70's. Since 2016 Iron Maiden, has used a 747 for their world tours, nick named 'Ed Force One'. Bruce Dickinson (Lead Singer of Iron Maiden) has a commercial pilots licence and has flown the jet. Prior to 2016, Bruce flew a Boeing 757 for Iron Maiden tours. Elvis had his own plane, and I believe KISS used the Starliner for some of their tours. 🎸🥁🎤✈😎

There's the rock and roll riff right off! The tune was actually written by a guy named Paul Pena. Look for Paul's version. Paul's voice makes it a bit different. Bet you dig it. Singin' along here. Check out SMB tune "Kow Kow". I like the little "m" sound Steve puts in before the word "busted"! Great reaction. Thanks!

Our local Classic Rock station KRXO used to play the unedited version for years. Then for some reason, they began using the "clean edited" version. But in the past year or so they've reverted back to using the un-edited version.

Yet another great song from the greatest decade of music=1970's. And another musically diversified band from the great decade..... I sooooo sooooo sooooo blessed to have been a kid coming up in the 70's. Our radio airwaves just provided such wonderful sounds, Rock and Roll, R-n-B, and Disco. Parties were just a joyous celebration of being alive..... Thank You God!

It's great to see you guys enjoying this. Sometimes you get tired when stuff gets played on the radio constantly but for some reason that never happened with Steve Miller Band for me and for a lot of people. There's just something so intrinsically simple but good about it. It always feels good on my ears. One thing that even a lot of my musician friends don't know, and I only found out about 6 years ago, is that while this song was released in 1977 they actually recorded it in 1975 for a prior album and it just didn't get included. In 1977 they released it as a single and it went right up the charts and then they included it on their next album. There was also a shorter single mix that you would hear more on the radio, it's a bit shorter with less of the guitar intro and they clean up that phrase about stuff going down in the city by substituting in the phrase, funky kicks. BUT! A relatively unknown at the time musician actually wrote this song in 1973. Black dude named Paul pena. He was fantastic. He only ever released one main album that was recorded with this song on it in 1973 but due to a long running dispute with his label, it never got released until 2000. He also released an album of throat singing of all things. And then he died not long after that I think. But here is how it came to be in the Steve Miller Band. A former keyboardist and founding member of Steve Miller Band was an accomplished Studio musician and producer at that point, working with the Rolling Stones and Diana Ross and Eric Clapton and so forth. He was an incredible session musician himself. So he was producing this album for Paul Pena when he realized that jet airliner would be a perfect fit for Steve Miller band. He was very excited and he asked Paul if they could cover it and this is how amazing and humble Paul was. He told them to go ahead and do it and he didn't even ask for any sort of royalty arrangement. Nonetheless, I believe they paid him anyway later. It's just a fantastic song and just out of music history Fascination if nothing else, and being able to say you know something that 95% of Steve Miller Band fans do not know, you should check this out. But also, particularly you amber, his version is definitely funkier and it's a bit longer and it actually has extra lines in the song that Steve Miller Band chopped out. And as much as I grew up listening to the huge hit and how much I love Steve Miller band, over the last several years I've listened to this version a lot and I actually think it's much better. I think that's what the keyboardist realized in the studio that day when he asked Paul if Steve Miller Band could cover it. It's just a kick-ass song. But check out this funkier bluesier version of it. And also the backing vocals in this are fantastic. There's some woman who just kills it. And the guitar in general is a lot funkier and I think there may even be a wah pedal on it at some point. m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Cjr5U7g6aiA.html

You know, as I get older I appreciate bass guitar SO much. I never paid much attention to it years ago. Now, my ear catches right on to it. And I think the bass is great in this song. It's so interesting how something that so often feels "in the background" is actually a driving force of the song. MMM. So good.

I find it interesting that right over Jay's shoulder is a photograph you have hanging on the wall of the "Rat Pack," otherwise known as Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr. and Ol' Blue Eyes himself, Frank Sinatra. I know how you love Frank (who doesn't?), but have you ever listened to the music of either Dean Martin or Sammy Davis, Jr.? Dean Martin was about as pitch perfect a singer as there's ever been. He played the drunk whenever he and Sammy and Frank were cuttin' up on stage together, but when you really listen closely, you'll notice that Dean never misses a note. And this was decades before AutoTune. And Sammy Davis, Jr. is widely credited with being a pioneer for African-American entertainers gaining mainstream acceptance among mostly white audience -- thanks in large part to Frank Sinatra, who was a huge champion of Civil Rights. Here are a few starting points for you: Dean Martin's biggest hit was "Everybody Loves Somebody." A few of his other hits include, "You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves You," and "Houston." Sammy Davis Jr. was known as much for his dancing as for his singing; he was a true all-around entertainer. But he did have a few hit singles. Some will point you to "Candy Man," or "I've Gotta Be Me." But honestly, I think his best performance came in the 1962 hit, "What Kind of Fool Am I?" Either way, you can't go wrong with either Dino or Sammy. One other artist from that genre -- you like to call them "crooners," although I think that's too limiting of a generalization, these artists are capable of much more -- is one of the true trailblazers. When it comes to black artists being the first to be welcomed into white families' living rooms, you have to start with the incomparable Nat "King" Cole, whose primetime TV show in the '50s was the first network show hosted by an African-American. Of course Nat's most beloved classic is "Unforgettable" (1951), and it certainly is that. But honestly, if you're going to listen to "Unforgettable," you really need to find the live performance of his daughter Natalie singing it, while being accompanied by her father, long after his death. (The magic of digital audio.) But there is no shortage of Nat "King" Cole songs to listen to. For the time we're going through right now in this sweltering Summer heat, you could do worse than listening to him on "Those Lazy-Hazy-Crazy Days of Summer" from 1963. Or 1962's "Ramblin' Rose." But really, to get the full effect of Nat and his 3-piece combo (piano, upright bass, and drums), you really need to go back to the '50s to hear some of his very best stuff. Like "Mona Lisa" (1950), or "When I Fall In Love" (1957), or my favorite, "L-O-V-E," from 1964. Also, Nat's rendition of "Smile," a song that has been recorded by hundreds of artists through the years (Michael Jackson's version is one of the best) stands, in my opinion, as the greatest version ever made of this classic song. The song was written way back in 1936 by silent film star Charlie Chaplin, and is just one of those songs that can bring tears of joy to even the most cynical of people. As much as you like "positive" songs, I would think this is a must-listen. Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., and Nat King Cole. There are three of the greatest recording artists of all time, two of whom you have in a picture right behind you, and yet somehow you've never done a reaction to any of their music. You should correct that oversight soon. As for the Steve Miller Band, you've pretty much covered their hits from the '70s, which is when they rode the wave of their fame. There is a lesser-known song from their early days that I think you would enjoy. It certainly shows a different dimension to their music. From 1968, it was promoted as a two-sided single. The "A" side was supposed to be "Living in the U.S.A.," but most of us on the radio back then flipped it over and played the "B" side, an interesting little song called "Quicksilver Girl." You've definitely not heard this side of the Steve Miller Band. It's my favorite song by the SMB.

Steve Miller grew up with guitar royalty in his home as a child, quote from Wiki. Guitar virtuoso Les Paul and his musical partner Mary Ford were regular visitors at the Miller house. The Millers were best man and matron of honor at the December 1949 Paul/Ford wedding. Paul became Steve's godfather. The Man the Les Paul guitar was made for, the guitar that became an Icon .
