I actually still have the 45 from when I was a kid. Family Guy has several parodies of it. As wacky as the song is - there’s something addictive about it. 😀

In Nam this was a biggy. This would come on the radio or in the EM Club and the guys would go nuts, dancing (doing the Bird the guys and the brothers) and singing. Crazy those bad asses doing The Bird.

I was 4 when this came out. My older sister had the 45 and me and my brothers would dance to it endlessly, trying to do the twist I guess, until it got on my mother's last nerve lol. Definitely brought up smiles and memories. Thanks bro for making my day! 👍🏾

Peter Griffin's ('Family Guy') favourite song. They break into it outta nowhere every so often. lmdao. Somebody else on this page suggested 'Hocus Pocus' by Dutch band Focus, because of the novelty factor. If you haven't already - you may have - check out the version from the 'Midnight Special' where they gave them 3-4 minutes for a 6 minute song. It's priceless. Cheers.

That video is hilarious!Thanks for sharing, Rico. This song is a mash up of two hits from the 1950s by a group called The Rivington's. "The Bird's The Word' and "Papa Oom Mow Mow." Their songs are a bit more harmonic, soulful and doo-wap style. The group was popular at the time, but they have gotten lost behind the impact of this crazy jam. You might want to check them out, even in your spare time, just to see the history. Their original version of "The Bird's The Word" is a lot better, IMHO.

I love that you get this song. It's really just a fun, dumb, goofy song. Those have their place.

Mark Fidrych, a pitcher for the Detroit Tigers from 1976-1980, was nicknamed “The Bird” due to his hairstyle resembling that of _Sesame Street_ ’s Big Bird, and every time he took the mound, he would enter to this song. He was beloved by Detroit fans since his first appearance on April 20, 1976. He would go on to represent the American League (AL) as a member of their All-Star team that year, and compiled an impressive 12-6 record in his rookie season. Unfortunately an injury during 1977 spring training while he was goofing off cost him some time that season, and about 6 weeks after returning, during a game on July 4th vs. the Baltimore Orioles, he felt his arm “go dead” (it was a torn rotator cuff injury, which shockingly was not diagnosed until 1985). He had assembled a 6-2 record thus far and would only be able to play a few more games that season, ending up at 6-4. He was invited to be on the All-Star team yet again but declined due to his injury, and still on the disabled list towards the end of the season he decided to do color commentary with Al Michaels on ABC’s _Monday Night Baseball_ . In 1978, he pitched just 3 games but won 2, and made one final attempt at a comeback August 12, 1980. October 1, 1980, however, would prove to be not only his last Detroit Tigers game, but his final MLB game ever, but he closed out his career on a high note with a win. He was released after the 1981 season by Detroit and signed as a free agent with the Boston Red Sox and after playing for a while in their MiLB system, retired in 1983, his rotator cuff injury still undiagnosed and untreated. In 1985, it was finally diagnosed and treated by Dr. James Andrews, but with the damage already done, it was impossible for him to hope to return to baseball at that point. He sadly died April 13, 2009, aged just 54, while working on his ten-ton dump truck. A friend found him, and his death was ruled an accident as the result of suffocation after his clothes got entangled in a power takeoff shaft in the truck. RIP to an underrated Detroit Tigers pitching legend.

Great song ,it was stolen from 2 songs by the an R and B and doo wop group the Rivingtons.They used bird is the word and the song Papa omm mow mow, which was a hit before the trash men said they wrote it.Just little home work before records were sample.
