“Surfin’ Bird”, by The Trashmen, was a combined cover of two songs by an R & B singing group named The Rivingtons. The original songs were “The Bird’s The Word”, and “Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow”. The Trashmen single was released in November, 1963 on the Garrett Records label. The single reached Number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart.

The guy you see from 2:53 is not a member of The Trashmen but a Dutch comedian called André van Duin. I don't know how he ended up in this clip but I know that he won a talent contest in 1964 by miming part of Surfin' Bird. André van Duin has had a very succesful career as a comedian, film actor, singer and lately he's more into presenting more serious television programs, among them the Dutch version of BBC's Bake Off. He's still active and very very popular. It was nice to see his little Dutch snippet in Surfin' Bird. Greetings from The Netherlands.

This was hysterical - both the song and your reaction to it! My first encounter with the song was just a little over ten years ago. While deployed to Guantanamo, I got involved with the chapel music program and would select the music for the Sunday morning service every week. I would send the lyrics to one of the religious program specialists who would then type them up in a Power Point presentation so those who didn't know the lyrics could sing along. One week - I guess I was bored or something - as a joke I sent him lyrics to several songs and choruses IN SPANISH. I expected a phone call shortly afterwards, but nothing. Less than an hour later (which was a lot faster than usual), I get an email saying "Chief, here is the Power Point for Sunday morning". He had gone to his boss, the chaplain, and gotten permission to prank me back. The power point slides were the lyrics to Surfin' Bird, which I had never heard! Once I stopped laughing, I picked up the phone and called him to say "Touché Specialist!" RU-vid was fairly new at the time, but once I became more familiar with it, I made a point of looking this song up. Thanks for the memories and the laughs today!

Guys, you won't believe this! Surfin' Bird was the result of an unintentional collaboration between two music groups. In 1963, the black Doo Wop / R&B group, the Rivingtons, released a novelty recording, "Papa Oom Mow Mow". A little later, the Rivingtons released another novelty recording, "The Bird's The Word". A Minneapolis white Rock group, the Trashmen, had heard the Rivington's "Papa Oom Mow Mow" along with hearing another group's cover of "The Bird's The Word". The Trashmen decided to combine the two songs, not realizing that both songs were originally written and recorded by the Rivingtons. The Trashmen called their combination of the two songs "Surfin' Bird". A radio DJ who had heard and liked the Trashmen's version, arranged for "Surfin' Bird" to be recorded and released as a record. After "Surfin' Bird" became a hit, reaching #4 on the Top Forty list, the Rivingtons sued the Trashmen. The end result was that the Rivingtons were awarded with having written "Surfin' Bird", and were to receive sole writers royalties. But the Trashmen's catchy arrangement of "Surfin' Bird" is what also made it a hit!

From Wiki: The song is prominently featured in the Family Guy episode "I Dream of Jesus", in which Peter Griffin overhears the song at a diner and it turns out to be his favorite childhood song. He proceeds to annoy his family by taking the record from the diner and playing the song virtually nonstop for the rest of the episode. "Surfin' Bird" has since become a recurring gag on the show.

When Surfin' Bird came out most people (including me) did find it funnier than Papa Oom Mow Mow, which was funny as doo wop song full of gobbledygook, but Surfin' Bird did away with the doo wop, sped it up and gave a lot more energy.

This song was my great niece’s favorite song when she was a baby. She would be being cranky and I would put this song on and in minutes she’d be laughing and dancing. I have played this song literally 10,000 times for her. The song is about a dance called The Surfin Bird.

Back in the late 70's, early 80's there was a pitcher for the Detroit Tigers named Mark Fidrych. Some how the name Mark "the bird" Fidrych stuck and they always played this song when he would come out to pitch.

Funny, I always associate the song with Larry Bird. The singer even sounded like Celtics announcer Johnnie Most.

When I hear this song, it always reminds me of Ghoulardi, a fictional character created and portrayed by the late, great Ernie Anderson. Ghoulardi was the horror host of Friday night's Shock Theater at the CBS Affiliate station in Cleveland, Ohio, from 1963 through 1966. Though controversial at times, Ghoulardi scored 70 percent of the late-night audience at his show's peak, and received up to 1,000 pieces of fan mail a day.

OMG! Absolutely loved your reactions. Especially Amber's. I have two sisters who (may have indulged in a couple of cocktails one night) and both tried doing this 'dance' together while the video was playing. I recorded them with my phone and I was laughing so hard, the phone video wasn't worth saving. Darn! So glad you reacted to this.

From 1963, the year before the Beatles hit America. Some other good ones from '63 are Jimmy Gilmer's "Sugar Shack", the Surfari's "Wipe Out", Rick Nelson's "Fools Rush In", and Jan and Dean's "Surf City."

So in the mid-60s there was a craze of 'dance songs'. And then there was a reaction of comedy dance songs. The other one you need to watch is "The Freddie" by Freddie and the Dreamers who were a gag group that used to open by for legit bands.

The second half of the video you were looking at is made by a Dutch comedian called André van Duin. He was making a parody of the original, it was 1963 and it wasn't at all serious, just for laughs.

Bird is the word...the 'bird' is Thunderbird! A greeting of the day, first person, "What's the word?" Second person,"Thunderbird." Thunderbird - a cheap, get drunk, trash wine. I wonder if it's still around?

I was about to mention that song. It actually came out a year before "Surfin Bird." The Trashmen combined "Papa-Oom-mow-mow" and "Bird is the Word" to create Surfin Bird. Papa-oom-mow-mow was one of my favorite songs as a kid, and I've always been annoyed that Surfin Bird always upstaged it.

😂 I have heard about this for many years, and I've heard bits and pieces of this over the years, but this is the first time I've heard this much of it. And I've heard my dad walking around the house going "oopa mow mow oo-pa mow mow" and wondered what in the world he was going on about. 😂 BTW I'm 57.

Perfect song for an April Fools' Day! Loved your reaction. 😁 Did you notice that the guy at the beginning of the video is not the same guy at the end of the video? Someone put two videos together. The first half of the video features original "singer" Steve Wahrer. The second half is from a performance at a talent show. This man is from the Netherlands. His name is Andre van Duin. It was at the beginning of his career as a comedian. Link for the original video + interview on American Bandstand ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6GizTr6QLfc.html
