Speaking of the funky chicken, please reach out to the funky chicken by Rufus Thomas. First react to the studio version just so you can use your imagination as to what the dance looks like then react to Rufus Thomas singing funky chicken live at WattStax. It is a nine minute video that you will thoroughly enjoy.
It's a song that needs no analysis. It's frantic, catchy, manic, insane, loud, rude, fast, full of energy, absurd and memorable. Enjoy it without thinking and you'll love it forever.
My mom had a canary that very very seldom would sing. I would put on this song and crank the volume and the bird would go nuts ....singing and hopping around like crazy. Funny as he'll. 😂
Back then, if you needed to liven up a party, you would invite that dude over. This is actually a combination of two different songs, originally done by The Rivingtons, a black R & B group in the very early 60's. The two songs were "Papa Oom Mow Mow", and "Bird's The Word". You should check those out, too.
I was a sophomore in high school when this came out. Every day after school I would turn up the family stereo for the top 10 countdown. This song was blaring as my dad came home from work. He hated it and barked at me. I made the mistake of saying 'he's making more money than you !' The song is two songs by the Rivingtons, The Bird is the Word and Papa Oo Mow mow.
The Trashmen were one of those bands that had a big hand in setting the groundwork for punk rock. There's always the argument about who was the first punk band and so many people point at the Ramones, but listen to the Ramones' style and listen to the Trashmen and you can hear a hell of a lot of influence trickled down (along with other garage and surf bands of the era such as the Ventures).
AH this is the Dutch talent show of back in the day 1964 , he used the surfin bird as part of a tape mix playback performance . its not the original .. the artist in question is Andre van Duin . Hes one of biggest dutch comedians . In this talent show he was 16 or 17 back then.
This is called garage rock. This is one of the most fun kooky songs. Brings back a lot of memories hearing this when I was younger. And the video is absolutely hilarious. This song was actually a combination of two R&B hits by "The Rivingtons", "The Bird's The Word" & "Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow".
When I saw this pop up I said: OMG, YES! Brilliant reactions to a timeless classic! This was so much fun! Thank you Jamal for reacting to this, please take care and stay safe!
@@teresahall4247 … I came into the world just a year after you & LOVE Family Guy also, especially “that” episode where Peter started doing the song & Stewie & Brian were trying to destroy every copy of the song in Quahog 😂😂😂
Hello, I first heard this song played at our 6th grade graduation party. The at our community swimming pool afterwards. It's a most excellent song. Imagine singing it and trying to count the number of repetitions prior to the bridge, then midway switch the lyrics and keeping those straight.
Oh thanks for reacting! I was a Freshman in HS when this came out. We loved it!! We would go around saying, “the bird is the word!” And yes, when it came on the radio or jukebox at our local teen hangout, we couldn’t sit still!! Had to dance!! Thanks again and for all the music you play that we grew up with (50s, 60s, 70s)!! It was truly a magical time!!
This song has been covered countless times. I am partial to the version by Silverchair. We need more beach music. Can you do Wipeout next? Another song that’s been covered like crazy. The version by Gary Hoey really rocks out.
Insane rock and roll song. So of course it was used in Back To The Beach with Frankie, Annette, and PeeWee Herman..I love it--pure madness. Pappa oo mao mao, brother.
Hello Jamel, I remember this song, I only 9 years old, I couldn't get over it, I started dancing like him, this was on the Ed Sullivan show' ( Stella Ogilvie)
This is great stuff. It was on the radio when I was a kid. Great to see the singer doing his stuff. Finally! Thanks Jamel - what fun watching this reaction.
My dad wrote the song bird is the word and The group is a black group The rivingtons, It was 2 of there records papa oom mow mow and The song bird is the bird. The recorded both songs and the Trash men a group out of Minnesota use both records without permission .The song went on to be in many movies and commercial and was covered by many famous artists, like E.T,full medal jacket, Madonna whose that girl ,back to the beach, pink flamingos, happy feet 2,michael jackson dance video game and family guy the TV show that bought it back to popularity
My first time hearing this song was in the early 80's as a young teen listening to the Dr Demento Show. This song is definitely one of the most memorable, along with another song you should probably check out... "Rubber Biscuit" by the Chips (Rubber Biscuit was later famously covered by the Blues Brothers, but I prefer the original)
Hi again, Jamal! First things first! There officially was never a video for Surfin' Bird. What you see here is a visual simply thrown together for a pop music TV show for teenagers, in which the drummer for The Trashmen, Steve Wahrer (who also did the Surfin' Bird vocals), improvised a "Chicken Dance" (Get it? "Bird"!) for the camera. SONG HISTORY - In 1962, a black Doo Wop / R&B group out of Los Angeles, The Rivingtons, released a novelty recording, Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow. The next year, 1963, The Rivingtons released another novelty recording, The Bird's The Word. In 1963, a Minnesotan Rock group, The Trashmen, having heard both Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow and The Bird's The Word, realized that the two songs could be combined together. When The Trashmen were performing the combined arrangement, Surfin' Bird, in a club, a local DeeJay liked what he heard and arranged for The Trashmen to record and release Surfin' Bird, which became a big hit. The Rivingtons threatened to sue The Trashmen for plagiarism.
I was 6 yrs old when this came out, and our family was living in Madrid, Spain. But I'm pretty sure it was a universal hit! LOL Thanks for the laughs, Jamel! ✌💙✌
I was 10 years old when this came out and I was busy driving my mother nuts playing this - and dancing to it. The 45 I had of it "mysteriously broke" one day...
Reminds me of my little brother with Alvin and The Chipmunks doing Refugee. I’m ten years older and a huge Tom Petty fan so that thing miraculously disappeared.
Has there ever been a funnier music video? The dude's career as a comedian was launched that day and later he became the top comedian in Dutch history. He performed this song in 2010 in Sweden and the kids went NUTS dancing to it, especially when he hit the oo mau mau part. They went NUTS hopping on the stage and all manner of good fun. He did not do this chicken hawk dance though as he was busy playing guitar, hahaha.
and, at this point in time ladies and gentlemen, the Beatles were peddling "Love Me Do". Um, I didn't have to think to hard about that one ... _the bird will always be the word_
In Cleveland in the '60'-''70's-'80's.... Late night/bad horror/ sci fi movies w/skits.... and this song during breaks....."Goulardi", then" Big Chuck & Hoolihan"then Big Chuck and Little John, were the hosts👻👽👾
Wow. In 1963, I wasn’t even a glint in my dad’s eyes 😂😂😂😂😂. I remember this tune though, when I was growing up. I liked the music, so I assume that was the hook for people. The ‘chicken’ was a robotic toucan, wasn’t it? Anyway, loved your reaction 😂😂😂
Original songs by The Rivingtons: 1) Papa-Ooom-Mow-Mow 2) Mama-Ooom-Mow-Mow, 3) The Bird is the Word. The trash man took the chorus of the two or three songs to make their version. Lawsuit now states that they must give the Rivingtons credit for the song.
When this song came out, I was 25 years away from being born. The being said, what I thought the first time I saw this is cocaine is a hell of a drugs.
This clip is not actually the Trashmen. It is the clip that made the Dutch comedian Andre van Duin famous for this crazy performance! He is stil around today.
Remember, the post-WWII pharmaceutical industry was coming up with all kinds of mental health drugs by the late ‘50s early ‘60s. Everything from “Mother’s Little Helper” by the Stones to “They’re Coming to Take Me Away Ha Ha” by Napoleon XIII was influenced. It was the age of crazy. ✌️
"Everybody knows the bird is the word!" LOL great channel Jamel! Please react to "berried alive blood orange guitar play through" they're an independent band so it won't get blocked, ive never seen someone play guitar like this guy! So creative and talented! Please give it a chance
This is a funny song. I never saw this video, we heard it on the radio, a LOT! Fun! Growing up in Miami, this song was a huge hit, yes it was silly, and we needed silly! It was also used in the movie Full Metal Jacket
When I saw Bird is The Word, I remembered the song. Never seen the video. As dumb as the song is, I was laughing at YOU. Thanks Jamel for making the funny even funnier!
This is actually a cover of two songs originally recorded by the Rivingtons; The Bird is the Word and Papa Ooo Mow Mow. I think it was the prior year. There is no video of them that I know of but the audio is on You Tube. This is much funnier.
I know that this is a combination of 2 songs by a band called The Rivingtons. One of which was called Bird Is The Word, which I'm not as familiar with, but there is another song of theirs which I do enjoy called Papa Oom Mow Mow, which I would definitely recommend checking out. Very fun song.
I love this. Music like this makes me smile every time I hear it. Did anybody else see similarities to his dancing and the Big Shoe Dance that Peewee Herman did? I wish I could move like that.
During the huge Surf music craze of 1963, The Trashmen were probably the most landlocked group of them all, hailing from Minnesota. This is their most famous single, but they released a few others that were just as good or better. Their version of Malaguena is seriously good. The Trashmen don't actually appear in this video. The guy dancing is just the host of whatever show this was dancing to the single.
@@Spo-Dee-O-Dee Cool. I hadn't known that. Thank you. I've seen the waves on the north end of Huron. While they're pretty big, they're not really surfing waves. That said, the Great Lakes are well known for their temperament.
