The lead singer Howard Kaylan is a great friend of mine and we've been friends on social media for over 10 years. When I met him backstage at a concert in 2017 it was exactly 50 years after he met The Beatles, Brian Jones of The Rolling Stones, and Jimi Hendrix all on the same night in 1967. Then by the end of the concert.. I ended up being on stage with him and some of the other acts, singing this song ☮️

My 1st boyfriend, in 7th grade, bought this single for me. It was "our song". We went together on & off throughout junior high & high school. Didn't end up together but still, that song brings back sweet memories of Puppy Love. And I'm sure many others feel the same. It was a huge hit. 💙☮💙

This was the Turtles biggest hit, something of a mixed blessing for them, because they bought this song to record. They wanted to be a band that wrote its own songs, but their record label wanted them to just keep buying more songs like Happy Together. They fought their label over that until a bitter break up. Their second biggest hit, Elenore, is a song they wrote to satirize Happy Together. The two main Turtles were among the funniest in rock, that is how they got into Frank Zappa's band. And when Zappa was stabbed by a crazed fan they took his band and recorded as Flo and Eddie. But they were also radio DJs in LA and sang back up on an amazing variety of classic rock songs in the 70's. At least until the Coronavirus hit they will hosting a Happy Together tour in which they and a variety of other 60's bands toured each playing about 5 songs, but with 6 or 7 total bands on the tour like The Cowsills, The Association, the singer from Paul Revere and the Raiders etc.
@daletwin1
@daletwin1 2 года назад
I was going to tell the story of how and why Elenore was written but I see you already did a great job of explaining it. I will add two details. One is when Howard Kaylan wrote Elenore as a joke to get back at the record company he said no one got the joke. He put "Et cetera" in the song because he thought it was ridiculous and yet the joke went over everyone's head. Also, Kaylan said that he tried to make Elenore the opposite of Happy Together in the way he wrote it. Wherever Happy Together went up he tried to make Elenore go down.
@lonbecker113
@lonbecker113 2 года назад
@@daletwin1 I did not know that last bit, interesting. I have seen Elenore put on lists of songs with the worst lyrics, and of course they point to that et cetera as proof. But that just misses the point of the song. The whole battle of the bands concept is great. That they are making fun of "We are the World/Do They Know Its Christmas" type songs almost two decades before these songs were recorded is particularly impressive.
@daletwin1
@daletwin1 2 года назад
@@lonbecker113 here is an interview where Howard Kaylan himself explains his true motives behind the song Elenore. It's pretty interesting. He tried to write juvenile lyrics because he was hoping the record company would stop asking them to write more "Happy Together types of songs". But, the joke was really on him because the song was a big hit and no one got his joke. I personally love the song and the lyrics because of the silly, unique word choices. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zhsmcL8Y57w.html

The song was 1967 and has been in movies, tv shows and commercials. A true classic. The Turtles along with the Lovin' Spoonful and Gary Lewis and the Playboys had their 1st seven singles reach the Top 10 and doing it during the 60s British Invasion. They were the only American groups to do it.

There were so many great hits in 1967, e.g.: “Groovin” by The Rascals, “Western Union” by The Five Americans, “Nobody But Me” by The Human Beinz, “Baby, Now That I’ve Found You” by The Foundations, & “Don’t You Care” by The Buckinghams. Of course, The Beatles and The Doors also had great ones that year.

The Turtles were fun-loving intellectuals who were associated with Frank Zappa, but who had huge hits on the radio. The leaders, Flo & Eddie went on their own, and I got to see them in Charlotte, where I believe they opened for Zappa or maybe Roxy Music. Same small venue, which meant a more intimate gathering. Same small venue that Pink Floyd used to perform their Dark Side of the Moon tour, where I was hugging the stage, half crocked. Ah music the 70s!

Another great group from the 60's. The Turtles are an American rock band formed in 1965. "Happy Together" is their biggest hit in 1967. But they had a lot of great songs such as "It Ain't Me Babe", "Let Me Be", "You Baby", "Grim Reaper Of Love", "Can I Get To Know You Better", "She'd Rather Be With Me", "You Know What I Mean", "She's My Girl", "Elenore", "You Showed Me" etc.

One of my favorite songs from high school. The Turtles were an L. A.-based band that had an impressive, if somewhat short, string of hits. "Happy Together" was, by far, their biggest hit, and their only single that went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was one of the top two or three hits of 1967 (#1 on some radio stations' end-of-year lists). Their other big hits were, "It Ain't Me, Babe," "You Baby," "She'd Rather Be With Me," "You Know What I Mean," "She's My Girl," "Elenore," and "You Showed Me." They're all great. The lead singer was Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman provided the harmonies. The two of them broke off from the band and formed a comedy rock duo known as Flo and Eddie, which never enjoyed the kind of mainstream commercial success as The Turtles, but did develop a huge cult following. I thought Howard Kayland had one of the most distinctive, albeit under-appreciated, voices of any male singer to come out of the incredible '60s. Several of the Turtles songs, and especially "Happy Together," are considered rock and roll classics.

"Happy Together" was a number one hit for The Turtles in 1967. The song defined the sound of commercial pop music for years afterward. The Turtles landed several top forty hits in the sixties, starting with a cover of Bob Dylan's "It Ain't Me Babe" in 1965, followed by "You Baby" in 1966 before culminating with this song and extending into 1968 with the top ten hits "Elenore" and "You Showed Me", a subtle treat with a quirky modal change in the bridge. Founding members of The Turtles, Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman, aka Flo & Eddie, sang backing vocals on the 1971 T. Rex classic "Bang a Gong (Get It On)" as well as on Bruce Springsteen's 1980 top ten hit "Hungry Heart". They also composed the musical scores for Strawberry Shortcake and The Care Bears animated television shows.

The Turtles evolved out of a Surf band I think were called the Crossfires. Check out their appearance on (possibly) the Ed Sullivan Show, where they perform either "Happy Together" or "She'd Rather Be With Me". Throughout the song, Mark Volman (acting like a clown) wanders around the stage with a French Horn, while Howard Kaylan (with a straight face !) sings the song.

I always felt the last few milliseconds of the track were thoughtfully done. the closing was so unique. it also gives a feeling of doom to relationships while the lead slowly fades with "happy together" while the chorus drowns him out with ba-ba's which could substitute for problems and chaos. it seems like a metaphorical record of the time. 1967 was a year of many changes in the way society saw the world and viewed free love. maybe?

ELENORE and CAN I GET TO KNOW YOU BETTER are good songs by the Turtles which also capture that late 6o's, hippy, psychedelic feeling that we could all use a dose of today. But that's why this music holds its value by making us happy when the world is running down.

If it’s familiar it’s because it’s been in so many commercials and movies. You know it goes way back when you hear “ call you up, invest a dime,” that’s how much pay phones cost back then for a two or three minute call. Sorry no cell phones, so if you were out you’d have to look for the nearest pay phone. I definitely don’t miss that.

You should check out some videos of them performing. Howard Kaylan had such an incredible voice but nobody ever looked less like a pop star - except for his writing and singing partner, Mark Volman, who was quite a funny character. When they broke from their record contact they found that they couldn't use the name The Turtles, but couldn't even sing under their own names. So, they went by the name "Flo and Eddie", Flo being short for Volman's nickname, "the fluorescent leech". They sang with Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention for a couple of years.

I highly recommend the movie, Nicolas Cage in one of his best roles, crazy, weird, fun and excellent movie! ❤ Yeah, BJ is right, song was in tons of stuff, from movies and commercials. Remember the one with Jennifer Aniston in Heineken commercial.
