Some songs to start you with (but you can’t go wrong with any Tool song): 46 & 2 Stinkfist Sober (studio and live version from the 90s) Ænema Lateralus Jambi Schism Intolerance Pneuma (studio and drum cam versions) Descending Pushit Eulogy H. There a few songs that have to be listened to in pairs: Parabol/Parabola Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned Wings for Marie/10000 Days

A lot of rap fans tend to focus mostly on lyrics which is NOT the way to begin your Tool journey. Yes Maynard (singer) is a lyric master but the genius of Tool is that the vocals are fully integrated into the whole music experience. He along with Adam (guitar), Justin (bass) and especially Danny (drums) are MASTERS of their instruments and they compose EPIC musical journeys that have to be taken as a whole. Don’t worry too much about the meaning of the lyrics during your first listen to any Tool song. I’ve been a fan for almost 30 years and I’m still finding new meanings to their songs!

But imo the lyrics to so many of their songs ARE very important cause they lend deeper meaning to the music as well. I LOVE their lyrics! But I do suggest listen one time for the music ( Danny’s drumming kills me!) and another 99 times for the lyrics AND music ha! This song is about hypocrisy in the court system, where back in the day you could get jail time for pot from judges who were privately abusing drugs and pot themselves. A kangaroo court is mentioned it is just a sham court cause the judge has already decided to convict. The song is so clever cause he uses double meanings, like pot as in marijuana but also the saying the pot calling the kettle black, meaning hypocrisy. Lemon juice in your eye means fake tears of sympathy, being fake or self righteous when your behavior is just as bad as the person you’re judging.Tool is my fave band btw, I am almost 62 and have loved them since they started 30 years ago!

@@SharilynBratton I think we’re in complete agreement then. The first listen of a Tool song should be for the music as a whole, vocals and lyrics being an integrated part of the whole experience. Then you have the rest of your life (as you’ll want to listen to them over and over again) to decipher the lyrics because some of them are soooo deep it might take multiple lifetimes to fully fathom their power and witness their beauty as you swing on the spiral ;)

Tool is an amazing experience. You should check out the live drum cam of Pneuma - their drummer Danny Carey is incredible. I'd also recommend Right in Two, Lateralus, Eulogy, 46&2. They have so many great songs that make you think and feel. Enjoy! (Also, skip their official videos and just pull up lyrics)

Great reaction, Brother. NO official videos (at least first). A pre-read and some research about much of their lyrics ahead of time will help, because they write some DEEP shit!!! haha. Worth a read! don't try to figure out any rhythms. Unless you a mad genius (most of us aren't, haha). Just listen and feel it. It's worth it. I really enjoyed your reaction and energy!!

A lot of Tool's music I find moving in one way or another. Their music extends well outside this kind of sound, so not everything will be your vibe. If you go by their most popular songs off each album, that's a pretty good way to go. If you're using Spotify or RU-vid or any other service that shows you listen counts, you can use that to pick some more of their stuff to listen to. My favourite song of theirs is Lateralus, but I wouldn't recommend going to that next. Probably oldest album to newest would be a good way to go.

Dont worrry about catching the lyrics right away. Personally I think the best way to fully enjoy the entire experience is: 1st- How its being said. 2nd- What is being said. 3rd- Why its being said.

Welcome to Tool. Once you experience TOOL then expect the Tool Army to come watch you react to them. Tool is a very complexed band. Very intelligent and thier music has very odd time signatures which is why you couldn’t catch the beat. They are a band that does a ton of song build ups and are very meaningful. A word of advice is avoid watching thier music videos at first. They are very creepy and distracting when you’re just trying to feel them out. You can always come back once you’ve listened to thier audio tracks. Hope you keep going down the TOOL rabbit hole and keep spiraling out!!

If you do Pneuma - make a long one. Do studio+lyrics, follow with the Danny Drum Cam. No comments, no pauses - we are at 25-30 minutes to hear it twice. Spiral out!

You make a beat like this by being the best Rock drummer. As for not being able to catch the beat they play in odd time signatures so if you come for a hip hop back ground all you've ever heard is 4/4 beats at different tempos so Tool can be challenging to the ear,but definitely worth getting use to.

The closest people rappers have experienced to tool is Eminem or KRS-One....tool is far beyond every other band in their genre. You have to literally study to fully understand what they are presenting both musically and lyrically.

You aren’t going to decipher the time signature because there’s not just one. They use polyrhythms. I agree with everyone else about watching Danny Carey’s drum cam when they play Pneuma. It’s a necessary experience in my opinion.
