Rap is tunelesss drivel added by people without musical talent anyway. This is a cover of a great song by Neil Diamond, not as good as the original. Note that it is supposed to be about a sad person turning to alcohol for comfort after losing his girl. I don't think the reggae beat is even appropriate for it.

@@bodybalanceU2 The former rather than the latter; I wasn't the person compaining that there was no rap (which is not part of the song) on the end. I am joyful of the fact that I have access to so much great music on RU-vid, but I am not a grinning idiot who just accepts everything regardless, I regard it as OK to say what one doesn't like (and why) as well as what one does, as long as you don't go round insulting people. Is there anything in my post there that is factually incorrect? I cannot pretend to like rap if I really don't. Do you believe that a reggae beat is appropriate to the song words? Do you believe that the rap at the end improves the song? Feel free to disagree with me.

The song was written (and first recorded) by Neil Diamond in the '60s. These English guys gave it the reggae vibe and it became a huge hit in the early '80s.
@tarheel7406
@tarheel7406 4 года назад
Actually I believe some early 70s era reggae artist covered the song, and UB40 thought they were covering that artist. They didn't know it was originally a Diamond song until the band researched the credits for release. At least that's my understanding.
@walterpanovs
@walterpanovs 4 года назад
True, there were several covers of the song soon after its original release, and in various genres (including country). One was by a Jamaican group back in '69. I'm guessing UB40 somehow became aware of that version. In the late '70s and early '80s music with a reggae or ska sound was very popular in the UK (and some of that popularity crossed over to the USA as well).

Now what Gen Z artists make is about cursing words nudity and sex (explicitly)... You don't even need to read between the lines to get the Gen Z artists' sexual innuendos because innuendos don't really exist with their music as the music they make is point blank sexual or about drugs etc

The sound of summer for me when I was a kid. Listening to UB40 takes me back straight away to the 80s and Ramsgate beach.

@@ritaka3248 The original Kingsston Town was by reggae/calypso artist Lord Creator. Thanks to people like UB40 some of the old Jamaican/Caribbean artists finally got some recognition/royalties they deserve.

@@turdferguson400 Yes, but he is a young guy and maybe not aware of some of the old reggae artists. As with other genres of music its great that he and other youngsters appreciate music I was listening to over 50 years ago.

Uh oh- another cut version- they cut of the end where they basically are pretty much like rapping to the beat- you might wanna find the FULL version J -for real -you did miss some good stuff- and yep, we were all swayin’ to this back in the day, huge hit- but it is a cut off version- 😞. 💛✌️✨

This song always makes me happy and bouncey. Even though the words are actually sad. Me too. I didn't know it was 2 white dudes either. The video kinda doesn't really go with the song.

I'm from Birmingham. These are Home Boys been a life long fan for over 30 years. My mother and my siblings are huge fans. UB40 unfortunately do such great covers that original artists often get forgotten about. This I think was covered twice over before UB40 covered it. Please listen to more of their songs. I love UB40. Also look up online Birmingham Bands people forget that in Birmingham there are great bands Led Zeppelin, Dexys Midnight Runners, ELO, Musical Youth, Swim Deep, Ocean Colour Scene, Black Sabbath, Wizzard, Judas Priest, Moody Blues, Napalm Death, Fine Young Cannibals, The Fortunes, Duran Duran, The Spencer Davies Group and Apache Indian check out his greatest hit Boom Shack A Lak.
