This song gives me chills every time I hear it. It likes a gut punch to the soul. It easily lands on my lifetime top 10. This whole album is amazing. This band was really underrated in the US
He's a metaphor for life. Life doesn't care about you. It will move along and never stop, and if you don't keep your eyes open, it will run you over and knock you to the ground. At least that's my impression.
The symbolism behind him ‘walking against the grain’ banging into people is a representation of him going through life and facing the headwinds, trying to be himself and trying to be free. Notice that no one else is walking the same way.
@Lonely_Goat you're wrong - look into the background of this song please 🥺 ! The bad didn't get their royalties for this song - the rolling stones took them all!
They are as far from one hit wonders as you could imagine. They are huge. An outstanding band. Their album "Urban Hymns" is one of the album's of the 90's. "Sonnet" is another great song by them. I saw them live at Slane Castle, Ireland. What a day that was. 🙂
Damn this band is epic, highly recommend History, Sonnet, Drugs Don't Work and Lucky Man f.e . The vocalist Richard Ashcroft also has many knockouts as a solo singer, check him out man
Love this song! But boy is it filled with controversy. 😞 Richard Ashcroft, lead singer of the Verve, wrote the song. There was a battle for copyright infringement by the early manager of the Stones, Oldem, for the sampling of the orchestra intro by a dude Klein. Ashcroft won that case. Then Oldham came back again, this time suing for "the mechanical licensing" & won! So there went a bunch of his $. Now here comes The Rolling Stones (who actually DID rip off the song when they did "This could be the last time") suing Ashcroft! Tired of all the legal crap he made a deal for a 50/50 split on all the royalties. It wasn't till 22 yrs later that Mick Jagger and Keith Richards decided to hand over their share of the royalties to Ashcroft. 🤦♀️💙 It shows just how horribly shady the music industry can be.
Fantastic song... the melody is sampled from a Rolling Stones song called "The Last Time". And though they agreed to split the royalties, the Stones' manager wanted a piece of the cake and sued The Verve, resulting in them not making royalties from this song for the longest time. They got all the rights to the song in 2019.
Love this song and the whole album is a 90s classic. Lead singer is such a lovely guy, too. Jay you must listen to a band called Massive Attack and their track Unfinished Sympathy. You’ll love it ❤️
and also the influence for the brilliant album by Spiritualised - 'Ladies and Gentlemen we are floating in space' (The singer of Spiritualised: Jason Pierce, lost his girlfriend to Richard Ashcroft of The Verve, so Jason wrote an album about the heartbreak).
No, that is not his wife. His wife is Kate Radley (formerly keyboardist of the shoe-gaze band Spiritualized). Kate has appeared in only two or three of Richard’s official videos - of his solo career only. Buy it In Bottles, Science of Silence are two of the three I can remember that come to mind. She often plays keyboard with him on tour.
The verve are the reason we have oasis the verve especially Richard Ashcroft took oasis on tour with them that is why on oasis's first album cast no shadow is dedicated to Richard Ashcroft
Had the biggest grin waiting for you to hear this. This is the music of my youth, the Verve, Oasis, the Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, James, the Charlatans, many more. Manchester UK had it's own sound and swagger in the late 80's and 90's. We were the 24 hour party people and I'm so lucky to have been the right age to have embraced it. Glad you enjoyed this and could introduce this wonderful music to a new audience.
The lead singer Richard Ashcroft is incredibly charismatic, check out The Verve live at Glastonbury 2008, he had the 100,000+ audience in the palm of his hand.
you might consider it sacrilege, but check out 'drugs don't work' by casisdead. Might not be your thing at all, butt i stumbled across it thinking i'd hate it (I usually hate rap/remixes of classics) but it's kinda catchy with good lyrics
Complex song. What I love about you - always see the positive ... I appreciate your range in music. Your willingness to explore. Thank you for tonight’s reaction -
Such a great song, The Verve are amazing, not heard this song in aged, so glad you reacted to this. You must do more of their tracks... 👍😁🥰🇬🇧💞 The drugs dont work & Lucky man.
The video and song title are a homage to a brilliant song by British group Massive Attack and their hit Unfinished Symphony, well worth checking that song out. Also really, really recommend The Verve's The Drug's Don't Work and Lucky Man. Both excellent songs.
Luck Man is another classic from The Verve that you should give a reaction. This band is so sadly underrated. They have such amazing talent...oh to be so lucky if they would resurface with some more great music.
The album that this is taken from, "Urban Hymns," is outstanding... "The Drugs Don't Work," "Velvet Morning," "Catching the Butterfly" and "Sonnet" are my favs, but the whole thing is just brilliant.
I like when he walks over the woman's car hood, didn't break a stride in the process, and when she gets out / starts yelling at him he just keeps walking. One of the best videos ever.
Loved this song and I remember it from the great movie, 🍿 Cruel Intentions with Reese Witherspoon & her former husband & father of her children, Ryan Phillippe.
This was a massive hit in UK. It was on the radio a lot. If I remember correctly the band did not make much money from this song, I think the Rolling Stones owned the rights to the prominent strings that are a big feature of the track. Nice reaction.
@@Tlotoxl didn't know they gave it back which is great. I seen an interview with Richard ashcroft who was really bitter over it. Its not like the rolling stones were struggling for cash like
This why I watch this channel because they actually react and dissect the song. They cover any and every song, type a song in and he will have reacted to it.
I take it this dude is saying he's on a single track and nothing is gonna stop him from going straight ahead without anything moving him off his choice of paths to follow
We’re all trying to accumulate stuff throughout life, but in the grand scheme of things stuff won’t matter. We can’t take it with us. Really getting into your channel. Greetings and blessings from Ireland 🇮🇪
I’m liking the extra info you share just before the video. It can definitely help. Great song and band; Lucky man is also great by them. I love all these early 2000s style
One of my fav tunes of all time! Brings back memories of the 90s. Sentimental tune for me. The voice and video is fantastic, and the instrumental is legendary !
This is the first time you've heard this? Damn, I envy you. I wish I could hear it for the first time again - because that moment back in the day was incredible!
If you watch the movie cruel intentions this is part of the soundtrack and it really suits the movie. The movie will help you understand the song. Badass movie and Badass song.
Thats all i think of when i hear this song , the first one was awesome! Cept it pissed me of Sabastian died but still great movie , didn’t care for the other ones tho ,
@@jennytaylor4968 i have never watched any of the other ones. Only the first one. I had a feeling that it would not be anywhere near as good and didn't want to ruin the first one in my eyes lmao.
In case anyone hasn't heard the Stones finally got their label to back off and the verve make money from this song again (was never the Rolling Stones fault in the first place)
Didnt know that , thanks for the update, The stones have enough money and this IS different to their intro. I hope they got all the royalties, great song
Great tunes.....oh yes this music is great when you are walking to a restaurant that you have been waiting to go to for weeks. Great music and great food........awesome....
The Verve were not a 1 hit wonder band..they had 4 uk top 10's, their song "Drugs don't work" went to number 1, "Bittersweet symphony" got to #2.."Lucky man" got to 7th and "love is noise" got to 4th..Somehow "Sonnet" never broke the top 50 and is an awesome song..Richard Ashcroft also had a solo career and "Song for the lovers" is one you will enjoy..
