That line " I don't feel tardy" was epic! I bet every kid in every class in every school said that if he walked in late and and someone said " you're tardy" replied " I don't feel tardy"
It's amazing how a band with so much internal strife could project such a fun, party boy image. They really did look like they were having the time of their lives.
There wouldn't be one without the other, If this song had no MTV video, it would not have been as big of a hit, since MTV, and Much Music in Canada ,was not about the quality of music, just as long as the video was good is all that mattered. that is why ''music'' today isn't worth shit, the only decent music out there now isn't well-known because... you guessed it... no videos!! MuchMusic and MTV were the worst things to happened to music..
I was 16 years old when this album dropped and the 2nd concert I ever saw was this tour 1984, my first concert was Rush in 1982. It was a great time to be a young musician.
You are so lucky! I’m extremely jealous of you. I have an older brother 7yrs my sr. He always went to the best concerts Rush/VH/U2 etc. (way too many lol) Anyway, I was only 5 in 82. I’d give anything to have been a kid/teen in the late 70’s! Gosh the music was so special! Anyway, take care. Thx for sharing.✌🏼
I was at the Rush concert in 1982 , Signals tour Nov 15 1982 Maple Leaf Gardens Toronto Ontario , played at many venues that tour and glade you were at one of them . Max Webster backed them up if i am not mistaken , seen Rush many times being Canadian and tragic for Neils passing . Great band for this channel to react too , 2112 good start ..
@@waynesbutler7834 That’s awesome.. Myself & my friends (young & annoying I’m sure to 18 yr olds) begged my brother & his friend if we could go to the ‘Presto Tour’ in 90. I almost got to go to the ‘Counter Parts’ in 94.. however I got sick!🤬 It was at the now shut down, Orlando Arena. They had a pre concert party signings etc at Jani Lane’s Rip “Sunset Strip.” I’m sure you know about all of those. Probably went to them as well. Very cool again for you to have seen RUSH in the 80’s! Rip Neil. 🥁 Legendary.
@@beckystarrski Was great reading your own experience with Rush . I live in Canada just outside of Toronto Ontario home of Rush . Like i have mentioned i have seen every concert since the 80s but each time it was at the Maple Leaf gardens in Toronto and once in Hamilton , i have not seen them in any other venues and had many friends who grew up with them . Fun Fact , Geddy Lee real name is Gary Lee Weinrib , his mother was Polish and when she called him Gary it came out as Geddy and it stuck plus Neil , RIP , was not their first drummer it was John Rutsy who only played on their first album , quit due to diabete issues that he died from in 2008 from heart failure . And Neils story is so tragic , lost his daughter in a car accident , his wife dies 2 years later from cancer , remarries has another daughter and now he is gone . Have a great day ..
He literally started the song with a solo, played solo in the middle of the song that sounded like 2 solos and ended the song with a solo ._. God of the guitar, i remember even got some sort of an award that was called Guitar God or something xD He was not pleased with that, you could tell on his face.
David Lee Roth, the lead singer, went solo after this album. He made a series of four videos off of his first two solo albums, all of which have the same fun & funny vibe that this video has. They were, in order, "California Girls", "Just a Gigolo", "Yankee Rose", and "Going Crazy"
Eddie Van Halen got tongue, throat, and lung cancer. He thought it was from the metal guitar picks, but it's more likely (IMO) from his heavy smoking and drinking...
The smoking and drinking would be factors for sure. But he used a metal pick that he held in his mouth instead of throwing it away and taking a new one. His home studio the way it was wired, it was a static electricity haven. And he spent so much of his life in there.
True and also people who have never abused drugs, alcohol food and cigarettes get cancer more often than not. My doc said if it's in your DNA you'll likely get some form of cancer no matter what. Of course, abusing one's body adds to one's chances, I agree.
This was so fun to watch you guys see it for the first time! I’m in this video, and I play the detention teacher in the jail cell scene. The three of us eachers are also Waldos girls in the end, segment, yes, with the purple car and the pimp fur coat on Waldo. Haha it was a hugely popular song and video back in the 80’s and an MTV staple :) thanks for this reaction video, it was a kick to watch!🎉RIP Eddie🙏
I saw them at a backyard party in Charter Oak CA in 1974. Knew then, they would be something and have seen them at least 15 times since, from clubs n Sunset to stadium concerts. Never disappointed.
It was controversial enough then. Stuff like that was part of the band’s bread and butter. Some people getting uptight about it just made us want it even more.
@@marioaguileraiii8181 It seems like such a silly performative measure. I guess there's even an upside to them, though. If some parents wanted to get on a musician's case about offensive content, "Well, didn't you see the plain-as-day sticker on it, or are you too stupid to read it?"
Great reaction! The heyday of MTV made many songs just as popular for the videos as for the music. I always wanted to see what visuals Van Halen would use to promote their songs.
Learning Alex's opening drum part (hot rod sounding) was pretty difficult for me 30 years ago. But once I learned it, I was opened up many other avenues of new ability.
The solo was bits of different songs. The introduction was something he played to get his baby to sleep. The fast tapping towards the end of the solo was off a song called, mean streets.. Everything he did was part of some song
The guy in the in the disco ball scenes that couldn't keep time wasss..the Drummer! You should try "you really got me", there cover of the Kinks Classic, which, in turn, was quite ahead of its time !
I was a graduate of John Marshall Highschool in Los Angeles, where this video was filmed. Saw them live with DLR and again with Sammy Hagar. Best years of my life. RIP EVH.
In the early 80's I was at the Whiskey A-GO GO in Hollywood attending a punk rock show (my choice of music at the time). When the show was over and I was heading towards the exit and I heard people saying "Van Halen sucks" and more expletives that I don't want to say here. The isle to the exit turned right. The was a round booth with David Lee Roth sitting with a smoking hot chick on each side of him. He snapped his fingers on his right hand and made a V with his fingers. The girl on the right placed a cigarette between the V. He then moved his hand to the front of the girl on his left and she lit it. A true rock star moment.
If you knew the band's previous video work, including their cover of Roy Orbison's (Oh) Pretty Woman, they always went for the gag, partly because of Roth, ever the showman. This video got plenty of pearls clutched back in the day, for the obvious reasons.
Growing up in the 70's was a blast. Van Halen ruled the 70s and 80s. They were full of energy and party hard. Saw them several time in concert with Roth and Sammy. Loved both eras. I always tell people that the Roth era music was about sex and having fun, organically raw. Just epic. The Sammy era music was motivational and up beat, talked about love. Just awesome. You should check out some of Sammy's songs. I recommend Right Now and Poundcake. Two of his best.
This is the one group I never missed in concert. I once made my mom go wait and line to get me tickets because I had to work. I’m not 100% sure she ever forgave me
For years, there was a magical time, when Van Halen would release a new album and house parties would erupt across a great nation to join in exuberant celebration, drink would flow under plumes of smoke and all was fun and good in the world.
I'm just going to recommend watching all their videos. You may want to go back and forth between lead singers David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar. Dave and Sammy also had solo careers you may want to check out also.
I remember back in high school, around the time this song came out, this young sexy French teacher with the best legs was brought in and male attendance peaked for her classes even though most didn't care about learning French. I immediately thought of this song. VH were a juggernaught in the 80's.
Check out their "Panama" video. Much of it is in concert. Also, "Jump". FYI, If you ever check out Michael Jackson's "Beat It", Eddie does the guitar solo.
Eddie was also married to Valeri Bertenelli for a long time and had a kid together. Valeri was a teenage sitcom star who graduated to making lifetime type shows, and I think she has a cooking show now. She was/is fairly famous. I heard Eddie s a y that about how he got cancer, too. The dude smoked like a chimney. He was just in denile when he said that. Eddie also played guitar on Michael Jackson's song Beat It. The singer in this vid is David lee Roth. He is the original singer and this was his last CD with them. Sammy hagar was the singer for your other vid. Most fans prefer David by a lot.
Valerie ruined VH. Jump to today and she and her son are still trying to hijack the legacy. But no matter how much they try, people keep coming back to songs like this. Says so much about how great the original six pack is.
You want guitar? You might want to check out Stevie Ray Vaugh Live at El Macambo. It's considered by many as one of the greatest guitar performances ever. As for this song, it was quite popular as was the video.
One of the things that sets Eddie apart from most of his peers is his instrumental approach. The solos are only a relatively small part of it. His rhythm and timing, and musical phrasing and arrangement, are the meat of his music. Without all of that, the solos wouldn't exist and Van Halen music wouldn't work. Try tuning your ear to hear what's going on behind the vocals: and all the guitar, bass, and drums, as well as keyboards. Aside from the drums pretty much all of the music is played and/or arranged by Eddie.
You need to watch the videos for "Mean Streets" & "Panama" or the older Van Halen with David Lee Roth as singer and "Poundcake" and any of their songs with Sammy Hagar when he was a singer. Sammy was the singer in the video that you first saw the incredible magic that was King Edward. Eddie Van Halen. You are going to have your mind blown when you see how Eddie is playing his guitar on the "Poundcake" video. They always had a music that was the front and center of their music because they had the greatest guitarist that has ever lived in their band.
I would like you to react to a song by Diana Navarro " El perdón " She is a very versatile Spanish singer. She sings different musical styles. She has a melismas and a capacity to sing with very long notes. She always transmits with her face and gestures. Best regards
First concert the summer before I went into 8th grade - epic! Great week for concerts in Houston- Van Halen had 3 sold out shows and a few days prior Prince did the same thing on the Purple Rain tour- 1984- what a year! You guys should really just start with Van Halen I album and work your way through- total powerhouse of good times
The greatest thing about Eddie’s solos was that he didn’t write them out. They were very organic and what you hear is always his first take of the solo. He is also one of the VERY FEW guitarists that play riffs and not just cords. Listening to his playing you hear riffs and so it is always more than just a bunch of cords to the song. He is also one of the best lead/rhythm guitarist ever! This one dropped in my senior year and it was the BEST!
Ok two quick comments. First, keeping going with VH! There is so much and they always make you smile. Second, move that video window in the center just to the left of center to improve the viewing experience and make me smile! 😍. Your reactions are fun anyway!
Watch the official Van Halen video for 'Pretty Woman'. He has an interesting guitar solo before it called 'Intruder' before Pretty Woman starts. Sounds like random noise but he makes it work.
Early VH has David Lee Roth on lead vocals. Watch "Mean Street" " Unchained" "Dance the night away" Later VH has Sammy Hagar on lead vocals. SO much from both!!!!
Eddie Van Halen claimed the metal guitar picks he habitually held in his mouth caused his tongue cancer. It's more likely, though, that his heavy cigarette smoking and alcohol use had more to do with his cancer - yes I Googled that!
EXTREMELY popular song AND album - Van Halen’s best selling & last w/David Lee Roth > I used the “I don’t feel tardy” line a few times when arriving late @ school - exact line from lady in the office. - you two are tardy! (my friend & I look at each other, grin & say in unison) we don’t feel tardy. Yeah. We got a detention 🙄😂😂😎
I’ve been a die-hard VH fan since 1978, Eddie was the soundtrack to my teenage years. In my opinion, the best of VH’s work was with leadman, the red rocker, Sammy Hagar! David Lee Roth was all about gimmicks, all about himself. Sammy brought sophistication and a great partnership on songwriting.
Hey guys, check out The Trifecta of Metal, Hard Rock and Rock: Jinjer, Band-Maid, and The Warning -- all pushing their core genres into the next realm! 🤘 🤘 🤘 Love VH, btw!!
You got it wrong about it being light and “pushing boundaries” As a kid in the 60s, teen in 70s ,college in the 80s it was before staring at your iPhone all day and all the woke bulls**t and we had way more fun and the music was one of the biggest reasons. I know...”Okay boomer”
