3 things: 1) Coolio eventually did admit he was being a little petty and he and Al made up. 2) This goes over a lot of people's heads, but the 'No phones, no lights, no motorcars' stanza is from the closing theme of the TV show Gilligan's Island. 3) To film that scene, Al taught himself how to sing the verse backwards (at least the lip movements), then walked and sang backwards through the scene as they recorded it. They play that footage backwards in the video.

As I understand it, the problem for Coolio was that Al got the _label's_ permission, and _though_ that the label had asked Coolio... but the label didn't. After that, Al made sure to contact the artist _as well as_ the label. Legally he doesn't have to, but Al does get permission from artists before he releases a parody of their song. The problem with Coolio was his agent (who you usually have to go through to contact someone) said "yes" and didn't tell him. Al had the exact opposite problem with Lady Gaga - her agent said "no, she wouldn't be interested" without asking her, and later when she found out she was like "YOU CALL HIM BACK AND SAY YES!"

In many cases he does need permission, people often misunderstand the parody exception and think it gives freedom to use any copyrighted material if the work is a parody. What it does is let you use the work you are making a parody of. So take his song The Saga Begins, it's a parody of the The Phantom Menace using the tune of American Pie. So the characters from The Phatom Menace would fall under fair use. American Pie however is not being parodied just used in the parody so its music doesn't fall under fair use and needs permission. Sometimes the song or artist is the subject, and some songs probably fall in a grey area that would take an (expensive) court case so it's not just being polite to get permission.

@Mant101 yes and no. In his case he doesn't actually need permission. His songs are all substantial modifications of the source material so all of his songs actually count as completely new material. There is actually a % calculation that comes into play when it comes to this stuff as to if something is infringed on or not.

Fun Fact: The scene where the barn falls around Weird Al was a legitimate stunt. Weird Al had to stand in an exact spot to avoid being crushed when the frame was pushed/pulled down.

4:44 - They did not green screen that. Al learned the line backwards and then walked backwards through the shot while everyone else (chickens included) moved around him. Also, a bonus fact: At 3:17, that's an actual barn frame actually falling around him. They measured everything so that he wouldn't be in any danger... as long as he didn't move at all from that exact spot.

I saw an interview with Weird Al and he said that the falling frame was the most scared he had ever been because it was real and heavy. Also the the backwards scene just proves how much a genius he is singing the text backwards. So far the only song of his I don't like is 'Girls just want to have lunch'. For the rest they are amazing with 'Word Crimes' being the best.

A lot of people talked about the last shot, which they filmed with him singing in reverse and then reversed the footage. But, the shot where the barn frame fell around him was a dangerous one. They had to reinforce it with steel to make sure it didn’t twist or move when it fell, so if he had been off his mark or moved it would have killed him. It’s a reference to a Buster Keaton gag.

Quite a few artists got mad at Weird al... but they all had to give permission to even have the song exist. Basically what I think happened in these cases, is the artists said yeah to a contract with Weird Al, license to use the melody or whatever... then if the song is a HUGE hit and being played on the radio all day for weeks One might think they're not getting enough credit and Weird Al is getting too much. Same deal happens a lot in contracts that both sides agree to... but ends up working better for one party by chance.

According to Al, the ONLY suggestion he has ever taken from anyone for a song parody was from Madonna via her agent who was friends with Al's agent or a friend of Al's... she said she was surprise he hadn't don Like a Surgeon yet and he loved the idea and did it. He literally has people screen his mail for suggestions and throw them out.

Dude towards the end where he’s going forward and other are backward….. it’s weird…. Like Al, he leaned to sing that part backwards so while they filmed he was singing backwards walking backwards while everything else was normal. The they just reversed it so everyone else is going backwards and he’s going forward and it looks like he’s singing the song….. he said he was still able to do it backwards for a few months but since it’s not something he regularly did, he lost that it. Al is dedicated to giving us everything he can and then a tad more.

A unique perspective: I have actually met Coolio in the past, about 10 years ago. He earned the moniker, as I worked at the hotel that hosted him for just over a week for local shows and a rest - he would go (of course unimpeded because celeb) into the back kitchens. He actually started up the morning brew of coffee and chatted kindly to the housekeepers and overnight staff -which I was one of. This exact subject came up because I am a huge Weird Al fan. Durrr I had to broach the topic. Apparently he got upset about Yankovic making money off of his unique beats - and it's been argued that Yankovic actually spreads people's beats. Other artists have been honored by having Yankovic parody them. Yankovic is truly unique, and has been since the Dr Demento days. There was peace made. Some stir-ups were made over Lady Gaga as well - I guess it turned out that Ms. Germanotta had nothing to do with it, and it was a PR agent, lol. I will say that at least Coolio was not like E-40 - who got our entire hotel raided for drugs and underage prostitution o_O

Weird Al learned those lines backwards at the end (while also walking backwards) so when played in reverse (the correct way), it would turn out the way it did. There is a music video I know that was entirely shot the same way. It's called "Typical" by Mute Math. It's a really cool technique! If you've ever heard of the group Ok Go, they use all sorts of unique film techniques to make their music videos! They've done optical illusions, stop motion, camouflage, aerial group choreography, and they even shot in a zero gravity plane before! I wonder if they've shot entirely backwards before. I wouldn't put it past them.

there is something very special about the ending in this one, the last scene, lets see if you notice. I'm writing this before having seen the whole video. Edit: and you noticed... the scene is filmed and that part goes in reverse. the scene starts with him laying in the hay and he just gets up and start walking, it looks very weird. I'm ashamed to say it took me years to notice it.

This song is one of my favourites to see people react to, in no small part because I want to see if the reactor will pick up on the fact that Al snuck some lyrics from the Gilligan's island theme into the song (as mentioned in a comment below). That so few do is either a testament to how seamlessly said lyrics blended with the meaning of the song, or a simpler, sadder fact that fewer people know of Gilligan's Island these days. :P

No they didn't green screen that look it up it's pretty cool he did that whole bit while walking backwards and even mouthing the words backwards so that when it was played in reverse it gave this appearance. And it goes to show just how insanely creative Weird Al really is.

No ! Wierd Al REALLY learned the lyrics backwards, so he could reverse the foootage- He is walking backwards and singing backwards- they roll the film in reverse. Plus what gets me....The Coolio hair!

Al was actually walking backwards speaking in reverse, then they reversed the film so he would be walking forward and the horse and buggy would go backwards.
