I hate to suggest that you listen to the same song again, but a listen to the studio version is beneficial for three reasons. 1) The guitar interludes are played with an acoustic (Martin ?) rather than the Gibson electric. 2) The original drummer in the studio (Bill Bruford) leans a bit more towards jazzy. 3) The studio bass is not muddy like the live recording from Yessongs. The energy of the band on the Yessongs concert film is great, but the audio recording is really weak sadly. Don’t jump to the 20 minute songs yet. Start with the 10 minute songs from The Yes Album, Fragile, and Close to the Edge. Enjoy.

Yes were Rush's band heroes. At the Rock&Roll hall of Fame induction of Yes Getty Lee stepped in to play bass on because Chris Squire had passed away by then. Anyway, I think the best approach for this rabbit hole is to go chronologically, starting with their 3rd studio album - The Yes Album, and ending with their 8th - Going For the One.

I'm not going to go over what others have covered here. You'll find a lot of die-hard fans, die-hard critics, and disagreements galore as to their best and their worst, but I think all will agree that nearly every member that has come and gone with this band have been super talented. The chronological approach is probably a good idea since members of the band come and go pretty quickly and it's easier to keep track that way. Listening to both studio and live recordings when you can will help you get more out of their catalog. Sadly, there are few really good recordings of their mid-70s shows when they were pushing the envelope pretty hard, but recently some pretty good bootlegs have shown up here and there. My personal favorites are "Perpetual Change," "Heart of the Sunrise," "South Side of the Sky," "Close to the Edge," "The Ancient," "The Gates of Delirium," "Sound Chaser," "Turn of the Century," "Awaken," "Release Release," "Universal Garden," "State of Play," "Homeworld," and "And You And I." Good stuff.

Alan White (RIP), the guy on the drums, joined the band just a few days before this tour. The previous drummer, Bill Bruford, left to join King Crimson. The band is known for tight, complex yet expressive instrumentals, vocal harmonies - often three parts! - and long, multipart songs. Influences are everything from classical and folk to funk, reggae, and jazz. Steve Howe on guitar is an undisputed master as is Chris Squire (RIP) on bass and Rick Wakeman on keys. Their ability to translate their groundbreaking studio recordings into captivating live performances is legendary. And, yes, you hear other "Prog Rock" in their sound - Rush was heavily influenced by them as are many contemporary progressive artists. Even though the sound isn't the greatest, the document of YESSONGS - the film that this clip is taken from showcases them just as they began to freak people out with their talent. The three disc live album of the same title has better sound for sure. Check out some of these live and studio pieces by them: Perpetual Change (live has Bill Bruford playing an intense drum solo on Yessongs,) Heart of the Sunrise, Siberian Khatru, Ritual, Sound Chaser, Awaken, and two of the greatest prog rock accomplishments - The Gates of Delirium and Close To The Edge. Close to the Edge is often considered the greatest Prog Rock piece yet composed and performed. It clocks in at about 18 minutes and is mind blowing.

This band has been my favorite since 1976. You should always listen to the studio version before the live version, as some of the video quality from back in the day wasn't great. All of the members are absolutely top of their craft. And the are probably the best progressive rock band ever. Even Geddy Lee from Rush said there would be no Rush without Yes. The keyboardist is Sir Rick Wakeman. Insanely talented.

This was an awesome choice and reaction. I saw YES on this tour and the following one. SO very good. The second time I saw them I took a girl on our first date. She fell asleep at the concert and that was the last time I ever called her. 😂 You’re so very right about what masters of their craft each of these guys is. The lineup is Steve Howe on guitar, Jon Anderson on vocals, Chris Squire on bass, Rick Wakeman on keyboards, and for this tour, I believe that is Alan White on the drums. Howe, Wakeman, and Squire especially are considered among the elites on their instrument. Prior to this, and on the studio version of this song, Bill Buford was the drummer, and the sound is vastly different with his syncopation and creativity around the kit. Alan White is a good rock drummer, but Bruford has a distinct sound like nobody else. For an experience, try the studio version of Close To The Edge; considered by some the best prog song ever

Yes was a big inspiration for later prog rock bands like Rush (Geddy Lee played bass when Yes was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame). In this video you see the line-up many fans consider their favorite, with Jon Anderson (Vocals), Alan White (drums), Steve Howe (guitars), Chris Squire (bass) and Rick Wakeman (keyboards). During the history of the band, over 35 musicians have been part of it. Sadly, Alan White and Chris Squire have passed away.

I got to know and love YES back then (it must have been 1974 or ‘75) through the live album YESSONGS. If you are really interested in the band, regardless of your channel, I would suggest this album to get to know them. But bring plenty of time. The album consists of 3 vinyl discs; over 2 hours of live music. The music videos for the album are unfortunately of terribly poor quality, so you'd better listen to the album.

YES - best progrock band period. Btw- Rick Wakeman is the wizard in the silver sequined cape. His rabbit hole will keep you lost in the sauce for years. The drums is Alan White- best and stayed with YES until his death a couple of years ago. Chris Squire- best bassist - he also passed- in ‘15. We all miss him terribly. Jon Anderson- still singing and touring. I see him in August this year. The voice of an angel. You are wise to keep the ‘70’s YES going. Nothing better. Also RUSH CAME AFTER YES. Geddy is one of their biggest fans. He took Chris’s place for the RRHOF in’17. YES rules the prog scene.

Fans of their bands argue incessently over who should wear the crown as the Founders of Progressive Rock. Yes and Genesis get the majority of the votes and the support for that honor, with a smattering of votes for King Crimson and (?????) the Moody Blues. So, yes, you just listened to a prog band, one I believe created the genre along with Genesis. Bands like Rush and Styx derived their style from Yes. Nothing wrong with that, and it was nice to hear you give a shout-out to Styx for being creative enough and competent enough to fall within the prog rock genre.

YES were the guys who took prog-rock farther than any other band. Orchestral, complex, sprawling epic arrangments. Their crowning achievement is Close to the Edge, their 5th studio release. It is an orchestral rock masterpiece. Five musicians who are each masters of tbeir craft. Their only possible drawback was that they were each too assertive and there were tensions and tug-of-war dynamics going on frequently. Dude with the cape is Rick Wakeman, one of tbe VERY top keyboardist/classical concert pianists in the world. Steve Howe is absolutely savage in lead guitar, and oh yeah, Chris Squire is easily tbe most aggressive, ferocious bass player in rock...no shit...
