First time hearing Zager and Evans - in the year 2525 (REACTION) 

You're thinking of the The Large Hadron Collider built by CERN. One of my favorite quotes is from Neil deGrasse Tyson, “Imagine a life-form whose brainpower is to ours as ours is to a chimpanzee’s. To such a species, our highest mental achievements would be trivial. Their toddlers, instead of learning their ABCs on Sesame Street, would learn multivariable calculus on Boolean Boulevard. Our most complex theorems, our deepest philosophies, the cherished works of our most creative artists, would be projects their schoolkids bring home for Mom and Dad to display on the refrigerator door.”

I have had this conversation several times with my 92-year-old aunt. When she was born in 1927, she lived on a farm as many people did. The changes she has seen in her life are incredible. Some people make fun of their parents, grandparents etc., because they can't keep up with technology. But you would probably be just as unable to live life the way they did growing up. I think many folks have adapted amazingly to the changes they faced.

When this song came out cable was only in wealthy neighborhoods, everyone else had antennas on the roofs of their houses in order to get television in our homes. Antennas were everywhere you looked. Computers were massive equipment that took up huge rooms to operate.

1969 was an odd time in the USA, as a society we were straining to look ahead with optimism and see what was coming, but were also cringing with fear of a potential near future dystopia.

This song came out in the mid 60's. You're right...man WILL evolve itself to new realms....whether he sees he should or shouldn't. It's his nature. We have the audacity to believe that we can control everything and/or use what we create to your own ends. Y'all are growing up in the wrong age. This was the music I and others grew up with...lived with. It was new and exciting and we looked forward to the next thing. It blows all of todays' swill completely away. For the time in which this song was written it was very prophetic. Although some of the things it speaks of were on the cusp of discovery already. A very intelligent young man. Who is correct when he says that we may never know all the answers. After all it would be impossible to know all the answers when we don't even know all the questions. So-called scientific facts are always being updated as we discover new information.

Thank you !! Most people miss the meaning of the lyrics at the end, which suggest that the whole cycle of progress and technology is an endless cycle. It was all done before by us or by aliens on some other worlds " THROUGH THE TWINKLING OF STARS FAR AWAY, MAYBE ITS ONLY YESTERDAY, MAYBE ITS ONLY YESTERDAY ". The song then repeats with the lyrics starting over again with the year 2525, indicating we are going to go through the whole cycle again This song fits more prophecy into a 3 minute song than there is in the whole of the bible or nostradamus

Daniel, this is the definition of a one hit wonder. This came out in 1968 and I still have my 45 rpm record. It was played continuously on AM radio back then. Stuff like this shouldn't be taken that seriously as it's like The Jetsons meet Star Trek in the Twilight Zone. This is a what if.... scenario. Not exactly 1984 or BRAVE NEW WORLD , maybe you might be interested in them. Even though the lyrics could be disturbing and compared to 1968, today's technologies are so much more advanced I wouldn't worry too much, we probably won't be here in 2525 I don't remember people having that serious of a reaction to the song back then. I guess there were more important things to worry about then. Like Vietnam War, Civil Rights and possible race war with assassinations of MLK and RFK and the 1968 Presidential election Nixon/Humphrey and riots in Chicago at Democratic convention. Good thing that things have changed since then, right, no longer Vietnam, now China.

Brilliant and beautiful ending lyrics : "But through eternal night The twinkling of star light So very far away .... Maybe it's only yesterday?" Makes you ponder about the many civilisations out there in the gigantic universe that have come and gone or even exist right "now", but which we will never get to know about for real, because they are simply too far away. I also love how the tune keeps going one note up in key for each verse and speed up as well. 😉

I always thought this was about technology moving faster than our ability to deal with the ethical and moral issues that will arise. It also questions the idea that underlies our culture that the future will only bring progress. But, what is progress? And, do we evolve into something better? Why do we assume "progress" is inevitable?

You are sitting in a room, by yourself presumably, talking to a camera, and I bet most of us are sitting alone watching you. So at least we still need our eyes.

Don't know what happened to Evans, But Zager started making guitars. I owned one for awhile, a very nice well made instrument. He only sells online. You can find him at Zager easy play guitars.

It’s a classic. One hit wonders. Group disbanded in 1971. Huge hit in 1969, topped the charts for 6 weeks. It foreshadows a lot of what we’re living through today & the dangers associated with technology & it’s suppression of our humanity. One of the singers, Zager worked in the guitar business for years after the group disbanded, making custom guitars. Evans died in 2018.

I remember when this was on the Top 40 rotation. It was everywhere on radio back then. Very prophetic.

I love the tangent you went off on. As one who was born, raised, and is still a practicing Jew, although not strictly observant, your tangent as a Christian was very welcome. There is a basic tenet in Judaism called Tikkum Olam: "repair the world," "mend the world," "heal the world," etc. Implementation of Tikkun Olam varies within the different movements of Judaism, and even from person to person within one of the movements. For me, Tikkun Olam explains the Jewish outlook on that for an individual, this life is more than likely it. There is no planning for an afterlife. What we do here and now is what matters. Some Jews interpret that to mean that Hashem (God) needs to be brought in to every aspect of life, and Judaism pretty much has a prayer for every aspect of life. From the most fundamental such as awakening in the morning or even using the bathroom, to more esoteric such as reciting the blessing upon seeing a rainbow. By reciting these prayers, those who do such believe they draw the Holy down in to the mundane and sanctify it. Others believe Tikkun Olam to charge us with a higher calling, to literally mend the world. Jewish scholars say the TANACH (basically what a Christian would call the Old Testament) contain 613 mitzvot, commandments. Not just 10. We are to strive to abide by as many as we can, but even the righteous are not expected to constantly keep all of them. Sin in Judaism is mostly viewed as mankind against mankind. Hence us asking forgiveness of our fellows during the Jewish High Holidays. Only those we have transgressed against can forgive us, not Hashem. Finally, there are those who have the means and are able to manifest repair, mending, and healing on a larger scale. Whether through philanthropy, charity, or environmentalism, they bring the concept of Tikkun Olam in to the physical world. But, all of these applications have merit. If we were all to go through our lives with care for one another and our environment, we could possibly attain a paradise on Earth. ....my apologies for the book. It is a joy to see the youth of today thinking for themselves and being idealistic.

This is a very fascinating and haunting song. Haunting is the best way to describe the vocal, and muscially.... it's a Spanish march... so what an odd amalgam that just works briliantly. The only thing I would have changed that would have shifted the meaning of the song, is the line, "God is gonna shake his mighty head, he'll either say I'm pleased where man has been, or tear it down and start again"... I would have changed the line to "He'll either see a place where man has been, or tear it down and start again" Meaning we've either destoryed ourselves, or we will be so debased, he'll destroy us and start over anyway. I guess I have a more pessimistic view of human nature. This song was NUMBER ONE on the billboard chart for an astounding 6 weeks. Massive, massive hit.

When this song came out in 1969, color TVs and push button phones were new. Moving forward is good, but only to a point. We live in 1984 now. Big Brother is always watching. I remember when the thought of cameras everywhere was inconceivable. Here we are. The song is that we, as humans, will eventually cause our own destruction. Understand that this was the 1960s. This was the time of existentialism. Religion was taking a huge step into Hinduism, Buddhism, Rajneesh etc. George Carlin RIP was an incredible realist and comedian. I enjoyed your video. As a Christian, myself, I look at what is happening now with CERN, AI, UFOs, Criptids sightings, test tube babies and what have you. We’re already there. But many times I wonder, how much of what is in books, ie 1984, Ron L Hubbard, etc were used as a template of today’s society. Don’t lose sight of the Lord. Stay faithful. He’ll see humanity through or He’ll take us home. Stay true and courageous.

The biggest challenge, when it comes to faith in God, is to believe that God is sovereign and in control, despite what we see around us. This is what the Bible teaches. Despite our circumstances, God still places limitations on what we can do. Ultimately, we must learn to trust God with our lives and the things which we can't control.

I remember this song very well! I understand if people never heard of it. But It was very popular for a brief moment in time.

The song I am old enough to remember when released in 1969 and none of what they were singing about was even a reality yet except in science fiction... not even the first test-tube baby, robotics, even a Matrix type nod with the pill. It was a song that scared the poop out of many but it was also a great song by itself. Some saw the two artists as visionaries and the timeline is off as these things are now happening around us way ahead of schedule.

I happened upon your channel while watching reactions to 2525 and I must say that yours is the most mature and thoughtful one so far. Most were either fear or confusion or both. My opinion is that it is because they don't have a spiritual anchor that you have. Just so you know, I'm a boomer (63 y.o.) and do remember those times when this song came out. This was one of my favorite songs back then. If I might put my own interpretation to some of the lyrics... At the time of the release of 2525, Vietnam was at its peak. The Cold War was an ever-growing threat of nuclear annihilation. The women's liberation movement, the sexual revolution, and civil rights battles were going strong. Hence, the opening lyrics could be interpreted to mean: 2525: If man is still alive.... Mankind might destroy itself If woman can survive.... If women achieve true equality with men, are they even a separate thing? 3535: Not needing to tell the truth or lie because of a pill you take that controls your thoughts, your actions, and your words.... Mind control/programming through medication. We have drugs that can change your moods, make you tell the truth, or make you very susceptible to suggestion. 4545: Won't need your teeth or eyes. There is nothing to chew, no one looks at you (you don't look at anyone else, either) .... Food has become very processed. We can make food that doesn't need to be chewed already. As for eyes, we use avatars and text messages and memes and emojis to communicate. We don't need to look at someone to 'talk' with them. 5555: We lose the use of our arms and feet because of automation.... Telepresence, anyone? Now, imagine you were able to direct a machine to do a job in VR over the internet via a chip in your head. Hmmm, what was that thing Elon Musk was going on about not too long ago? 6565: The first "test tube baby" (IVF), was born only 9 years after this song was released. Today, we can select the sex and even some other characteristics before the child is conceived or change them afterwards with gene splicing. Ethics prevent this for the most part, but ethics can change. 10,000 years: Maybe it's only yesterday.... Perhaps we've destroyed ourselves, but who's to say that God couldn't start over somewhere else, and by the time we've hit 10,000 years, they are where we are now. This is what scares people. This song was quite prophetic in its own way, although it was mainly just following the breakthroughs of the time to their logical conclusion.

Im 66 years young and this song and lyrics have been with me since I first heard it in elementary school. To this very day every time my car odometer flips over to the next 10,000 miles I sing this song to myself while driving.

My late brother who was also a Christian would always say in discussions with Atheists always raised a very important point. He would say let's say for a moment you as an Atheist are 100% correct and there is no God when we both die, we both end up the same, however, if I am correct and I as a Christian have at least a chance of making it to Paradise whereby the Atheist cannot.

Genetically picking at least 1/2 of your child is happening now. My daughter recently donated to an "egg bank". The process involved her physical appearance as well as a history more detailed than any doctor has ever asked. I was kind of blown away at the information she needed to get from her father and I. I understand the need for knowing any physical issues but delving into our intelligence levels surprised me. I simply told her she got her brains from her father.....because I still had mine.

Zager & Evans are predicting a dystopian future if mankind doesn't stop pursuing more and more technology. That's my take on it.

This is my all time favorite song and you have a good idea of when the song means. Powerful song! Mankind seems to be destroying and replacing himself with technology ...so true ...kids cant do math...rely on calculators ! I actually spoke to Rick Evans who wrote and sang the song. Quite a person..he didn't need to have anymore hits as the income song gave him a good living. He did write a similar song "Hydra 15000"

Ok,,, I don’t know how young you are but,, I must say that your not only a well articulated person for your lack of years, but also a very bright, on the edge thinker,,, one might even say “capable of critical thinking”. I’m wondering if you went to private or public schools. Cause back in my day, no one spoke as fluent as you do, let alone think out the box like that. If ya did you were “stoned” either chemically or verbally. This was a very well articulated reaction video on your part. Although sometimes the internet does not get everything correct (believe it or not) most of your reactions/ views on the music/lyrics are for the most part pretty accurate.,,, which is more than I can say for plenty of other reaction videos I come across. As a very young kid growing up to the tunes your analyzing,, it wasn’t even a thought as to what the message was, as much as what the music was sounding like. Not until my teen years did I start to hear some sort of message coming out of music. And in those fleeting moments of enlightenment did I have a brief moment what the hell was he thinking?? You however are on a whole different level. S T R A N G E , It’s almost emotional to listen to an interpretation of something I’ve heard I don’t know how many times and never knew what the hell it actually meant.
