First Time in Mongolia's Countryside - Ulaanbaatar Day Trip

Today we are exploring outside of Ulaanbaatar to see Mongolia's famous countryside! Ulaanbaatar is a neat city, but the places that excite us most about Mongolia lie outside the capital in the wide open spaces of rural Mongolia. Just an hour's drive outside of Ulaanbaatar, and we felt like we had entered an entirely new place! All in one day we were able to visit the giant Genghis Khan statue, Terelj National Park, ride on horseback, and climb up to Aryapala Monastery for the best views of Terelj National Park.
Our first stop of the day is at the tallest equestrian statue in the world. The Genghis Khan Equestrian Statue (or Chinggis Khan Equestrian Statue) seems to come out of nowhere and is 130 feet tall (40m). The best thing about this statue is that you can climb it! Going to the top of the horses head and looking back at the very imposing Genghis Khan in his giant form is a must do in Mongolia! Mongolians revere Genghis Khan, so to see him in this powerful way helped us better understand why this fella is so important to the country we are visiting.
From the Genghis Khan statue we drove to Terelj National Park which is less than an hour from Ulaanbaatar. The park is vast and is a great place for a couple of days if you're looking for an easy multi-day trip from Ulaanbaatar that could be easily organized independently. We're here just for the day, so our first stop was Turtle Rock to climb the rock formation and take in the views of Terelj National Park while earning ourselves some good fortune from the turtle. The road from Turtle Rock to Aryapala Monastery (our next stop) is pretty rough, so our driver went on ahead and we road on horseback to get a small taste of the true Mongolian experience. Riding on horseback is still a very common mode of transportation in Mongolia, and there are actually more horses than people in the country, so we had to try out the local method of transportation or ourselves!
45 minutes later we arrived to Aryapala Monastery and Meditation Centre - a stunning Buddhist Monastery with the best views of Mongolia we have seen so far. With our driver guiding us to the top, we slowly made our way to the top of a huge hill where the monastery sits. Inside the monastery was beautiful and rugged, but our favourite part of this visit was the views from the monastery balcony. It's amazing that on a day trip from Ulaanbaatar we can easily get these incredible Mongolia travel experiences that we came to this country for!
If you want to use the same driver we did, his name is Zorig (hopefully we've spelt that right!) and his number is +97 690 339 271. We would recommend him!

I could definitely be wrong, but i took the quote at the end to mean exactly what it says. Thinking about Mongolia, its a vast land of mostly emptiness... so when you lool at this vast land or world of emptiness do you renounce it? No you enjoy it. You explore it, you let it bring you joy. A dog doesnt renounce grass it takes as much time as it has to get enjoyment from that grass. My 2 cents. Btw I enjoyed the video! Keep renouncing the world like a dog renounces grass!
@leapintothewild
@leapintothewild 5 месяцев назад
I took it as a dog won’t eat grass like a horse, so it renounces the grass like we should renounce worldly things… 😆
@TheBayaraa85
@TheBayaraa85 5 месяцев назад
Nope. This is nothing related to vast land. In Buddhism, they say that the world or universe itself empty or void. Don't be tricked with materialistic things, etc... Basically, you can't feed the dog with the grass, and the dog wouldn't be interested.

They supposed to build thousands of soldiers surrounding the statue but not sure when it's gonna happen. I heard long time ago, you could buy a face of a soldier, meaning put yours instead. I thought maybe it was one way of funding that project. I hope they will build it soon, cause it would be specatcular.

Nice video guys. I'm heading to Vietnam next week and got myself a multi-entry e-visa and I was looking at Bangkok for a side trip but your Mongolian series has me looking at going there. Cheap flight from Hanoi to Seoul to Ulaanbaatar. Do you think that it's safe enough for a 67 yr old women travelling solo? (Fellow Canadian, eh?)
@joppari1984
@joppari1984 5 месяцев назад
If you need a help with your trip you can contact the local travel agencies in mongolia or i can hook you up with one. And yes it is relatively safe for solo travelers here. I would recommend you to come during summer if it’s your first time though. Because as you may know, Ulaanbaatar is the coldest capital in the world and its currently wintertime here😅
@nicoleandmico
@nicoleandmico 5 месяцев назад
Hey there! I have to agree with the other person who replied to your comment. I would feel safe visiting as a solo female, but right now it’s very cold in Mongolia and wouldn’t recommend going in winter! It’s an incredible destination, but their winters are as cold as our Canadian winters (even colder at times!) so I think Bangkok is a better choice this time of year.
