In today's video we talk all about Black Metal and the masters of the genre.
This was actually entertaining for me. I loved this.
Reacting to black metal was a lot more fun than I thought!

Oh no honey, I do love you for trying this, but seems you are maybe a little impatient for black metal. Freezing moon is a looong song that builds up slowly, it shifts as it goes and vocals will come! That is the magic there. And oh, you started listening to the new Immortal album. It isn't bad, but it's just not the original 90s sound with the original vocalist. Maybe try a song like "A perfect vision of the rising northland" to get that wintery Immortal groove ya know? And ya, that's another 9 Minute song right there, you see. It builds and shifts and man, it is fantastic!! But love you for trying this anyways :) I watch every video! XO

Been listening to black metal for a decade now and it's become my favorite genre of music. Since I came into it from folk metal, the bands that got me into it all had some degree of folk influence: Windir and Moonsorrow among others. Black metal is the most diverse and open ended of metal genres, it's a bit premature to say that black metal songs have a tendency to be long, they can be any length, since black metal isn't limited by tempo or song structure; it's purely driven by atmosphere. It really depends on the band. You hit the nail on the head with the "hatred to all mankind" remark--misanthropy is a big source of inspiration for many black metal bands, and so the music is made to feel like that, to create an "atmosphere" of hatred. This isn't the case with all bands though, you'll find many different topics of inspiration among black metal bands. You noticed the repetition of the second Darkthrone track and the low quality of the mix. The repetition is meant to create a hypnotizing atmosphere--you'll find that a common attribute of many black metal tracks. Many of the pioneers of the Norwegian scene went into creating their music with the intent to make the production as bad as possible to convey the feelings of bleakness, despair, and raw evil emotions--a feeling of "grimness" as Darkthrone puts it. They purposely chose the worst quality recording equipment they could find. Black metal with this kind of low quality production is called "raw black metal." Vocals and lyrics are an interesting topic for me. To me, lyrics are the least important aspect of music, so being unable to make the singer out is a minor issue. What's more important are the vocals themselves, and I think that the vocals are especially important in black metal. You've only listened to three black metal vocalists, but I assure you, not all of them sound the same. As far as understanding the lyrics goes that comes with time, it's like learning a new language and not being able to pick out words. You can look up the lyrics and attempt to read along as well--it's especially easy to do so these days. Another thing is a lot of bands sing in their native language so even if you could pick out the words through the screams they'd be meaningless anyway. It's important to understand that the three bands you've discovered today are "second-wave black metal." So to answer the question of whether the Norwegians invented black metal the answer is yes, and no. They created the modern sound of black metal, what's known as "second-wave." The true origins lie in bands like Venom, Celtic Frost and Hellhammer, Bathory, Sarcofago, the early manifestations of the Teutonic Thrash scene (namely Kreator and Sodom), etc. These are so called first-wave black metal which was just called "extreme metal" back in the 80s. If you want some sing-along black metal check out Venom. The Norwegians were the most well known at the time due to the controversy surrounding Mayhem, but there were scenes popping up all over the world emulating and expanding on the first-wave sound--Germany, Greece, Finland, France, Sweden, etc all had pioneering and emergent scenes different enough from their Norwegian contemporaries. Song recommendations: Windir - Journey to the End (Norway, 2001) Moonsorrow - Jumalten kaupunki (Finland, 2003) Darkthrone - Ravishing Grimness (Norway, 1999) Venom - Witching Hour (England, 1981) Celtic Frost - Circle of the Tyrants (Switzerland, 1985) -- "belching is required in black metal", this is the band that started that trend Bathory - Call From the Grave (Sweden, 1987) Horn - Turm am Hang (Germany, 2017) -- My favorite black metal band Aaskereia - Der boshafte Geist (Germany, 2011) -- My favorite vocalist in black metal Black metal is a genre that you need to sit with for a while to gain a true appreciation for it. There are so many different styles and subgenres for it that this introduction won't be enough to fully understand it. It's a journey well worth taking, as black metal is at once the most evil and terrifying of musical expressions but also it's most beautiful.

Norwegian Black Metal is the second generation of the genre, but before that bands from the eighties like Venom, Mercyful Fate, Hellhammer and Bathory were considered as such, too. They are the forefathers of the genre, mostly for the lyric themes than the actually sounding. Here in Brazil we have Sarcófago and Vulcano which are also considered as proto-Black Metal in mid Eighties. I think we can include Sepultura in that bill, too. The genre went mainstream with bands like Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir that incorporated symphonic elements to their sound. Nowadays the genre has many variants, like Folk, Viking, Crust, Pagan, Depressive, and so on, but in general their trademark is satanic lyrics, low-fi and raw production, shrieking vocals and desolate soundscapes. You almost nailed to unveil a genre that was born to be unknown. Cheers!

There IS vocals in Freezing Moon, they're just further into the song. F u n F a c t: the vocals are based on a traumatic experience from the singer's (dead's) past. When he was a kid he got trapped under the ice while swimming in a lake and the last thing he could see before passing out was the moon from under the ice, giving the illusion that it was freezing. He would be medically dead for a few minutes but would make a full recovery, at least physically. After the incident, he would grow a fascination with death and would take on the name "Dead", as he really thought he was dead. Rest In Peace, Dead

I really dug Black Metal when it first came out, before it went super orchestral. Had you continued on with the first Mayhem song you would have gotten to the vocals, which I think are much better than than Deathcrush, which had a different singer. The band were also not as good of musicians as the were on Mysteriis Dom Sathanas. The second Dark Throne song is more traditional BM and the vocals. The first Darkthrone song you played is not BM in my opinion. The first couple of Immortal albums broke my mind when they came out. The drums were so good and so fast. You should do a video checking out BlackGaze, it's pretty interesting. Black metal vocals over the shoegaze is basically what a lot of it is. Fun video...but all your videos are...

I think In the last 5-10 years the genre has become more approachable, with bands doing some really interesting things with the sound like Deafheaven, Blut Aus Nord, and Der Weg Einer Freiheit. A lot of shoegaze fans are discovering some of the more ambient black metal as there’s a lot of crossover in sound.

Black Metal isn’t played with the best studio equipment, and it’s kind of the point. When it first began they didn’t have a lot of money i.e. Mayhem and Burzum, also they’re the 2nd way of Black Metal. A good band to start would have been Bathory. The reason Mayhem began so angsty, they were young surround by Christians they had no choose with their surroundings. They felt they were being forced to be a certain way.

I’ve always been fascinated with the history/origins of the Black Metal genre. I haven’t gone down too deep of a rabbit hole but Mayhem is as far as I go. The riffs are amazing but the vocals are a bit of an acquired taste. The history tho is absolutely wild with the church burnings and deaths that occurred. I’m sure it left a sour taste in the public’s mouth but various sub genres have evolved to where it’s almost as far as from where it all started.

You wanna make out the lyrics in Norwegian? I am too but not all songs are in English, so you check them ... and anyhow, a big chunk of this genre is about building an atmosphere, hence the longer songs; so taking them in snippets doesn’t quite do justice to the music either. Not saying it’s everyone’s cup of tea but when you also approach it wrong it is kinda difficult to appreciate bm.

I don't like black crust on my 🍕 or toast. I went to a show with Cannibal Corpse , Deicide & Nailbomb. There were no ladies there. It was pure angst. Very amusing. Don't sing along ! 💀

Immortals "All shall fall" is easy to hear lyrlics. Mayhems "I am thy labyrinth" was more difficult, it took a few listenings to figure it out but after that the lyrics were spot on. I like songs like that, do you have other examples?

They took a pic of dead when he was dead, and had brains all over the place. They used that for the cover of an album. I don't know if it's true or not. I would have done it. But I heard that they made chilli out of dead brains, and ate it. I mean. I want to try human flesh. I'm into things like that though

In fact you listened norvegian black metal. Black metal is born in 1981, in England with Venom, then in Switzerland with Celtic Frost, and finally Bathory from Sweden. Then arrived the norvegian Black Metal, and again in Sweden too with band like Marduk.

Actually Euronymous was a mommys boy whose family bought him a record store that was epically failing and Varg basically had to take over and save his business for him because Euronymous did not know what he was doing. Then Euronymous wanted black metal to be a type of cult thing and varg was gonna expose him for being a loser. So Euronymous planned to kill Varg and Varg killed Euronymous in self defense.

I can tell you my story. Iv been playing this music since the mid 90s. When Metallica, or anybody else didn't come out with anything for years in the mid 90s we started getting the rise of nu metal. I seen it as glam metal making a come back. I need nastier, and heavier. Less polished than the mainstream metal at the time. Death, Cannibal Corpse, and Cradle of Filth were my introduction into death, and black metal

You'd be surprised of the black metal band names that exist. Quite a few of them are nature centered like "Forgotten woods" or "Drudkh" Which means Wood. I found my way into Black metal through bands such as Barathrum and Burzum and what I've discovered is that Black metal is the "widest" sub genre of all of music, it varies from echoing acoustic guitars to eerie synths to heavily distorted guitars with blast beast and everything in between. I'd recommend trying out bands such as Windir and Summoning to get the idea how wide the concept of black metal is.

So a few things you have to know about Black Metal. At the time when Black Metal rose up from the Underground and Bands like Mayhem, Darkthrone etc. where formed, Death Metal had a big success in the early 90´s. The production was good and the concerts got bigger and bigger with ongoing attention internationaly. Black Metal was against the comerce that was going on in that scene and against the "Jogging Pants" look some Bands had (for example Obituary). The "Bad Production" in Black Metal (first good examples would be every early Burzum stuff and Darkthrone "A Blaze in the northern sky") was a rebellion against comerce in metal music in general and should be only for the "real Metal Maniacs". Euronymous once said in an Interview that their EP Deathcrush was only for a few people and should be only listend by a certain audience. Black Metal was pretty serious at this point, at least from a few perspectives, while others just focused on the music. The church burnings and murders all had to do with Varg Vikernes the man behind Burzum, who took some political aspects within the scene. Bands like Immortal for example had little to do with all this but Darkthrone, Mayhem, Burzum, partly Emperor took part in that serious movement. Black Metal has a long history and brings certain athmospheres that cant be understood from ground on. The documentary "Until the light takes us" explains a lot in this context and i highly recomend you to watch it, not only for the music to understand, but the history alone and the background intentions of some members mentioned in this video, and even the crimes commited in that time of the early 90´s.

Varg, aka Count Grishnackh, the short time bass player of Mayhem is the one who murdered Euronymous. Err, self defended himself by stabbing Oystein 23 times. Either or. It was either a heinous murder, or very aggressive self defense.

yeah.. if you are after understandable lyrics, old Black Metal probably isn't the genre to dive into, hehe :) Through not everything is illegible, for example "Dimmu Borgir - Mourning Palace", or "Dissection - Black Horizons" are easier to "decipher" :)

Something to point out about the mixing you mentioned, Black Metal's intention is to be very low quality sounding to give that raw feel it has, granted good sound mixing gives a better produced song but most black metal projects are solo artists or groups of young adults who probably dont have the funds for good audio mixing. Especially the older 90s stuff. Enjoyable to watch you experiance black metal for the first time though. I'd reccommend doing a follow up video on more black metal genres such as Depressive Suicide Black Metal and atmospheric black metal as they have completely different sounds to bands like mayhem and darkthrone. Check out -Lifelover (most of their songs) -Woods of Desolation - The Inevitable End to name a few

Some of my favorite black metal albums that maybe a little more digestible? Or maybe not more digestible? Just more my thing?? But still definitely black metal: In The Nightside Eclipse by Emperor Blood In Our Wells by Drudkh (not sure if the name is spelled right) The Winds Journey by Ulm (instrumental album) Monte Veritá by Cenotaph Damp Chill Of Life by Nøne Ofte Jeg Drømmer Mig Død by Afsky Also a think to keep in mind: black metal, especially earlier bands, tend to be more of a raw and lofi deal. Production is usually a very low priority. Its all about feeling: darkness, satan, depression, winter, etc. Its not about lyrics, its about feeling. Id recommend if you creat another black metal video that you approach with this in mind, and if you can forget your preconceived notions, i think you'll get more into this.

Black metal, the extreme metal subgenre formed by the unholy trinity οf Mayhem, the Emperor and Burzum. Black metal is the most notorious of the metal subgenres, and because of the events that took place, the accompanying story has largely transcended the music itself. Black metal often uses a low production value that sounds raw and chaotic. Lyrical themes include pagan history, Satanism, an appreciation of the natural environment, and inhumanity. Images are often bold black and white with naturalistic themes. Not everyone’s cup of tea :) Fun video created with good intentions!

Raw production is on purpose. It was a reaction to polished death metal in the 90s. I hate to be that guy but there's an art form to this music. It's a philosophical rejection of morality, ethics, globalism and trends. But I get that you would just take it at face value and laugh at what have become stereotypes.
