This song was written in 1965 by Paul Simon. It was then a folk song meant to be a warning about the lack of communication between people in the modern society. The version of Disturbed is the anger created because we didn't listen.
He has the voice that can change attitudes, it's a God given Gift That Is rare , almost Anyone can sing , but it takes special songs and or singers to touch the Soul The way David does
The Biggest problem as of late , is what was supposed to bring people together have torn Us Apart . Phones , computers , laptops even tv's were supposed to be good , but when all We do is stare into these devices We become separated
This is entirely incorrect. Trent Reznor commented, when he heard the remake of "Hurt" by Johnny Cash, "I wasn't prepared for what I saw, and it really wasn't my song anymore". What Paul Simon ACTUALLY said was "In case you missed it, Disturbed did a wonderful rendition of "The Sound of Silence" on Conan this week. The S&G cover..." He also emailed David Draiman and said "Really powerful performance on Conan the other day. First time I’d seen you do it live. Nice, Thanks.” These comments get conflated all the time, with people posting this inaccurate information over and over and over. I would love it if people would do some cursory fact checking.
Whether Simon actually that or not, it totally is. I can’t even listen to Simon & Garfunkel’s version anymore. Their upbeat tempo royally irks my nerves. Pentatonix does a great cover of Disturbed’s version of the song, but for me… From now on, Disturbed singing Sound of Silence will always be ACE!!!
@@terraphon Your wish of people doing the right thing will sadly never happen...we don't heed warnings or go out of our way to do what's right ... it's too much work.
I normally detest covers of classics, but this one brings me to tears EVERY time I hear it. Simon and Garfunkel's original is great (albeit more upbeat) but this version...is a masterpiece. David Draiman did a remarkable job. Paul Simon was so impressed he told David it's his, now. What a compliment from the original!
I've listened to this song with Simon & Garfunkel hundreds of times but it's only in this cover that I heard the words. An amazing statement about the importance of democracy!
BS @ democracy. It's about how people walk thru life without connecting with one another on a human emotional level and fail to communicate, celebrate and connect with one another. Do try to ruin it with wokeness for f sake. Mark
Disturbed is a metal band, formed in 1994, with 8 albums so far. If you want to hear one of their originals, which obviously will be much heavier than this, try 'Down With the Sickness' for an older song, 'Hey You' for a new one.
It was written around the time of the Vietnam War and President Kennedy was assassinated. It was a warning and no one listened until now. David Draimans version makes you feel the words. Makes you sit up and listen. Sad thing is, it could have been written today with everything still going on in the world. Please have a look at the live version on the Conan show but please note he was very ill with Flu and he had to sit down in case he fell down. He refused to cancel the show. Live is amazing too. Hi from Scotland 🏴 Sorry, just saw you have seen the live version. 👍
Disturbed usually does much heavier songs, but David has such a beautiful voice they can't help but do these beautiful ones now and then. I highly suggest The Light and Hold on to Memories for more of his beautiful voice. David Draiman was trained as a Jewish Cantor, which taught him much of the skills he possesses in his vocal ability. Absolutely one of the best voices in music over the past three decades!
Wow I'm loving this reaction. It was so much like mine. I can still envision his gaze looking straight into my soul, the voice penetrating into the core of me. So stupefied, numb, and in tears afterwards. This is the best cover I've heard in my life. Incredible, rich, powerful and velvet male voice. Simply divine. I was familiar with the group and knew some of their songs, but here David Draiman showed the true beauty of his voice, its true power to shake people's souls to the core. What a gift from God.
What about "Down with the sickness" by Disturbed? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-09LTT0xwdfw.html I saw them live in Oslo, Norway before influensa. Amazing
Sound of Silence was written by Paul Simon and performed by Simon and Garfunkle way back in 1964. Disturbed's version is my favorite. I heard Henk's version and it seemed he only copied, or tried to copy, this version. Now, listen to the whole song without pausing it! Just you, head phones and this song
Hi Debbie! This is truly an amazing version but to me the live one sounds even better! And there's yet another live version with Myles Kennedy with some incredible harmonies -that'll introduce you to Myles which, along with his band Alter Bridge, is another rabbit hole that's totally worth checking out.
It was comical to watch the qweens reaction to this song..I love David Draimans voice ,he could sing the phone book, etc and I'd listen to him.He is absolutely phenomenal..
Hello Debbie, Simon and Garfunkel's version is a lighthearted warning. Disturb's version is the result of not listening to that warning!!! Disturb "the light" is another great song as is "A reason to fight"
You finally got here... A heavy metal band that catches EVERYONE by surprise, then elevates and owns a song (this song) 50+ years after it was written!! Anyone who hasn't been blown away by this isn't really listening! No matter what genre you like, this is superbly done and flawless! The best cover/song/video these past 7 years! DISTURBED ~ WOW!! Are you ready? Disturbed - Sound Of Silence (live) = ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Bk7RVw3I8eg.html
This is David Draimen and classically trained plus he is the most diverse singer. It is a cover from the Simon and Garfunkel song. David Draimen is amazing. Love Disturbed.
This is beautiful and introduced me to Disturbed. Dave's voice is amazing. Funny story: while watching everyting of Disturbed on RU-vid, YT kept recommending Dimash to me. And someday I gave in and down the rabbit hole I went.
I am fortunate enough to have been a fan of Disturbed from day 1 with Down With The Sickness. Their albums just get better and better as they get older and more mature in their music.
Disturbed has other beautiful songs but when they go hard, they go hard. Just be prepared. David Draiman is probably best known for his singing with distortion in his voice like towards the end of this song. It often surprises people how beautiful his normal voice is and even more shocking when he drops down lower in his register to sing those deeper fuller notes like at the beginning. He has a 4.1 octave range but generally is using +/- 2 octaves for his performance of their songs.
I have spent hours watching vocal coach and teachers reacting to this song because I need to know that the best of the best know just as I do that this is truly amazing!!
David comes from an orthodox Jewish background and trained as a Hazzan, or Cantor, who leads a congregation in songful prayer. He's had his demons. Battled, and won, against heroin use. When he was aged 16 his then girlfriend who introduced him to heroin killed herself. He himself very nearly died aged 18 due to the heroin use, and that experience helped him to get off of the drug. He went cold turkey and kicked it. With that in mind Disturbed's music is heavily influenced by these experiences. The girlfriend's suicide influenced their song "Inside the Fire". The video to which is very disturbing. Expect some hard hitting lyrics and visuals when you listen to their original work. Which is also very heavy. They did this song as they often do a cover when they release an album. They've done a very good cover of Genesis' "Land of Confusion". But as you've seen, one of their most popular songs is "Down With the Sickness". Be careful, the full version is not for the faint hearted.
Debbie, I know you said that you are 52 years of age. I cannot believe that you have never heard the Simon & Garfunkel original??? Is KY at the end of the world?? lol
I'm normally not a fan of covers but this one I love. I've been listening to disturbed since I was young. They are normally a lot heavier and not a lot of people know this but the lead singer David Draiman is operatically trained. Pretty cool for a guy in a heavy metal band
That is the amazing David Draiman. He was trained at an early age as a cantor in the jewish religion, but chose to dedicate his life to heavy metal rock with his band 'Disturbed' (thank God). Another fantastic cover they did was 'Land of Confusion' the old Genesis track but delivered with real GUTS 😁 Hope you can check that one out too one day, you'll love it I'm sure.
And we all have to Acknowledge Paul Simon and Arte Garfunkle for writing the song. Of course, Dave and his group modified the arrangement and did a masterful job, as I believe this was the way this song was Meant to be played. Dave has the perfect voice for this song and the appearance on Conan was his crowning achievement, even though he was not 100%.
I prefer the Conan version, partly because watching his eye and hand movements and general body language is almost hypnotic. Such economy of movement and so expressive at the same time.
May I suggest the Cranberries song Zombie. First do the original, than follow up with the Bad Wolves version, since you enjoy those male vocals. You might want to do the homework on the song first. You probably heard it as it was often played on the alternative rock radio in the 90’s.
Love the Bad Wolves version as well the incredibly moving original Cranberries! I was devastated to learn that O’Riorden(?) , Cranberries’ lead singer, passed away the day before she was to record Zombies with the Bad Wolves. They went ahead and recorded it in her memory.
When Simon and Garfunkel wrote this song it was a warning. A warning to what was coming with technology and the pace of the world. Disturbed's version is a we told you so. Paul Simon heard Disturbed play this song on Conan and commented it was no longer Simon and Garfunkel's. He said this it was now David Draimen and Disturbed's song. David is classically trained as a Cantor and he's very talented. Welcome to Disturbed and the Sickness.
Many thanks to Simon & Garfunkel, they have a huge catalogue of work and have influenced MANY current artists.....thanks to them for writing and recording this classic first over 50 years ago, warning us to not turn our backs on the world and it's willingness to embrace "SILENCE"........they made it possible for Disturbed, Pentatonix and others to re-interpret this great piece of music......
I have listened to Disturbs version if this classic song from the 60's literally 100's of times, and it still reaches into my soul and forces me to look at who I am. Full body chills every time! David's voice is one of a kind.
This is truly just a magnificent song written by Paul Simon, one of the best ever. Disturbed; telling us the time is HERE, change now.....intense.. This version is just stunning!!!
The original was written and performed by Simon and Garfunkel in the sixties. This is an amazing arrangement and performance by Disturbed. I must say though, I am disappointed with all of the pauses. It's unlike you to pause that many times and I think it would have made an even bigger impact if you had paused alot less. I'm not trying to sound mean and I apologize if it comes across that way. I just felt it needed to be said. Thank you. I do enjoy your reactions.
Well, my deleted comment went sorta like this: When I first heard this cover of Sound Of Silence, I said "Now THIS is how this song should have been sung in the first place. Simon & Garfunkel's version was just too "happy" sounding for the subject matter." I was blown away by how much more emotional this version of the song is compared to the original. Another song where the cover version is way better than the original is Johnny Cash's cover of Nine Inch Nails song Hurt. This is a MUST hear...can I get a "Hell yeah!" from the rest of subscribers if they think so too? Here is a link to that song: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8AHCfZTRGiI.html. Cheers!
I disagree. Simon and Garfunkel's version is different that's all and clearly how Paul Simon intended the song to be. However Disturbed's version is also really good but for different reasons.
I love Simon and Garfunkles version, as I remember when I first heard them sing it in the 60s. I was a little girl with older brother who listened to alot of diff kinds of music then. But I LOVE this version due to intensity. Bless you girl!
Please do Hold Onto Memories by Disturbed. My 12 year old grandson died on January 24th and this song has helped me get through just moments at a time. But this song Hold Onto Memories is for anyone whose lost someone they love ❤
David Draiman was trained as a Jewish cantor! Simon and Garfunkel were worried, David and Disturbed are pi$$ed! Similar message to Nightwish "Noise". This is not their usual style. OH-WA-AH-AH-AH! "Down With The Sickness".
I think another great song for you, to ease into Disturbed would be their cover of Genesis' Land of Confusion ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YV4oYkIeGJc.html Then one of my favs is Indestructible. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aWxBrI0g1kE.html
What sets this apart from the Conan version, is the video portion increases the emotional impact of the song's message, plus this was a healthy David doing the singing.
This is truly one of those songs that everyone remembers hearing for the first time. I remember feeling a little uneasy to begin with and that ended with a feeling of triumphant bliss. David Draiman is the real deal. It was awesome to be with you when you first saw it, Debbi, thanks for bringing us along.
You are my new favorite person!!! I just heard this yesterday and I had every reaction you did!! HOW DID I NOT HAVE THIS SONG IN MY LIFE FOR 9 YEARS!!!!
One of the things said about this version of the song is that Paul Simon had stated that for years, he and Art Garfunkel essentially owned this song.. And he is right, because whenever anyone mentioned The Sound of Silence, they thought of their original recording. But Paul said himself that this version from Disturbed is so beautiful and haunting that it breathed a totally different life into it, and that he and Art no longer "own" this song. This song is Disturbed's now, just because of how beautifully haunting it sounds, and that this is how it should be. One thing that Disturbed has done (at least as far as I can tell going back to their first album) is that they include at least one cover song on their album. They so far have done Genesis, Sting, Tears for Fears, Simon and Garfunkel, among others. But this is the song that Floor was talking about on Beste Zangers that Henk sang for her; plus Henk learned how to sing with distortion in his voice for her, so he could sound like David Draiman in this version.
I loved the original song in the 60’s but I always thought that it was too light and the lyrics hinted that it needed to be darker. I was a musician for 48 years , but, when I heard this version I had the same reaction as you did. Luv ya !
David Draiman's got a once in a generation voice and the training to use it properly. I've always likened his voice to a Lamborghini V12 engine (I'm a bit of a car nut... :P). Smooth and throaty at low revs, it rises to a powerful growl when you hit the throttle, and when you really step on it it roars like some mythical creature from the dawn of time. He's just so powerful and controlled, it's amazing to listen to and you should definitely check out some more, but be fair warned: Sound of Silence is an outlier in their repertoire. It is about as far from their normal sound as you can get and still be the same band, but the rest of their stuff is excellent as well, just a lot more hard core. They do make a point of including a cover song of something thematically important to the concept of each album, and this one was written in the mid 60s by the phenomenal Simon and Garfunkel, but they really put their own unique stamp on it and made it their own. One of the things you will find if you explore Disturbed, is they do NOT shy away from difficult topics or dark subject matter. They actually focus a lot on mental health and dealing with trauma or abuse, but more in a mindset of surviving and recovering from these things, and even when they visit really dark topics, they touch on it in a generally positive manner that manages to be uplifting and inspiring. One of my personal favorites is The Light. Great song about dealing with dark times in your life.
@@dalehammers4425 oh, agreed. Just pointing out that their bread & butter is hard rock/nu metal. Some of their best songs are on the lighter side, but my favorites tend to be more hard-driving. :)
Hi Debbie, glad you sorta "rushed" to Disturbed after doing the Henk Poort version. David Draiman has such a unique voice. Sometimes clear, sometimes with a lot of grit, but always unbelievably intense. You gotta check out Disturbed's original songs. Let's start for example with "The Light". More on the heavy rock side compared to Sound of Silence, but with great melody and a really touching video. I bet you'll like that very much... Here's the link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_LypjOTTH6E.html Love from Germany, Wolfgang
Disturbed is on tour later this year. Going to see them in July in Phoenix (and there's not a lot I'd go to Phoenix in July to see...outdoor venue, too).
This is on my play list. So relevant for the chaos of today. Don't be silent people. Speak your truths or Communism will take your words forever. Have courage.
Paul Simon from Simon & Garfunkle wrote this song sitting in a dark bathroom in the 60s. My #2 fav cover. 😃 #1 is High Hopes (Pink Floyd song) by Nightwish - Marko is lead singer. #3 Zombie (Cranberries song) by Bad Wolves.
I just heard Paul Simon in an interview talk about how he wrote this song sitting alone in a dark room and how in the middle of the night notes would run through his brain.
After hearing this cover of his song, Paul Simon posted it on his social media pages, something he’s never done before for any cover of his music. The singer of Disturbed, David Draiman, is classically trained as a Cantor, hence his Angelic voice when he wants to show it.
Love this version so much better than Simon and Garfunkel's.....OMG, and not for nothin', but our sweet Tommy Johansson does this cover too.....his version is very close to this one and it's also awesome !!
That was quick !!! Btw. the same song (the Conan-show version) I sent you a wrong link. This link must be ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Bk7RVw3I8eg.html&ab_channel=TeamCoco Btw. If you like a really deep (sexy) male voice, you have to watch HOME FREE (a pentatonix like group (a capella) with a cover of a Dire Straits song *_"Brothers In Arms"_* : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_ChD2WjD2tY.html&ab_channel=HomeFree (don't melt behind the camera 😉) Just another HOLY COW-moment.
when the original version was written and preformed in the sixties, this was a warning of what could happen if people didnt talk to each other ..this version is him saying you didint listen and now it has come to pass " people talking but not speaking .people hearing with out listening " sounds a lot like our txting culture " silence like a cancer grows " when people are called this and that because you dont agree with them ,leads to people not speaking out about things they think are wrong. "praying to the neon god they made" sounds like todays celebrity adoration thats seems prevalent. so he has all the right to shout at people for not listening to the original all thosse years ago ..... this always chokes me up as soemone who was around with the original and it makes me sad to see where the world has gone
Watch Brandon Leake's (spoken word) audition on America's Got Talent. Not only does it make people tear up but he was the grand champion, beating out all the singers, acrobats, magicians, comedians, etc. in 2020.
The singer, David Draimen, has one of the best voices in metal and with good reason, his grandfather was the Cantor, Jewish prayer singer, at the Temple in Jerusalem!
Hi, it's Michael from Australia. I told friends many years ago about David's cover above and they could not believe that a Metal band could make the song so more beautiful .
I've said it before and I'll say it again, rock and metal singers are some of the most talented vocalists around. May I recommend Corey Taylor from Slipknot with Snuff (acoustic)?
Debbie! Debbie! Debbie!! Welcome to Disturbed!!! NOW FIRST an warning!! He is an great singer and the band is wicked BUT his band is quite powerful in their usual stuff and im not individually sure how you would react to some of their usual stuff due to his vocal aggression OF course im not citing that Disturbed isnt "good" they are! I HAVE two suggestions for you (to do an reaction to) 1: Hold onto Memories (official video) 2: NITA STRAUSS Dead Inside Featuring David Draiman of Disturbed. a footnote on the #2 of my suggestion Nita Strauss is an guitarist. HIYA from Southern Ontario Canada
You like deep voices? David trained as a Jewish cantor, that's what gives him the ability in his voice. He's so powerful, I absolutely loved Simon and Garfunkel's version when I was a kid. This is on a whole different level though.
Your reactions kill me. It looks like your beautiful blue eyes are about to pop out of your head 😁 In my opinion, this is so much better than the original.
And as GOOD as this is he did it even better on SNL and was SICK. HE WAS SICK & THE PERFORMANCE WAS SICK! He might have hurt his voice but the raspy growl factor was an 11! 😮
Pretty sure someone would have already mentioned in the comments somewhere but David started out as a fully trained opera singer and the went into the crossover type scene before Disturbed.
David Draiman was not trained operatically. He was a trained Jewish Cantor at a young age, like his father and grandfather before him. He honors his family by not having any tattoos. He was having some vocal issues 2012? He took time off to learn how to protect his vocal chords with some vocal training then.
In 1965 Paul Simon sang this song with the voice of an angel; a warning about what mankind was doing to each other. In 2015 David Draiman sang with the voice of an AVENGING angel; Eyes aflame and sword held high; the rage of what mankind had DONE to each other. The anger that we didn't heed the warning.
David has a beautiful voice. Some of Disturb's is not as sensitive. I think you would enjoy their softer stuff: Hold On To Memories, A Reason To Fight. A lot of their other stuff is much heavier.
