David doesn't use Auto-tune; he HATES it. In fact, during the Conan performance that everyone is going to ask you to see, the producers decided to use it and it REALLY pissed him off. What you're hearing is a natural affectation of his voice from years of being a Cantor. My pick for a Disturbed song for you is, 10,000 Fists. 🔥🤘🏽🔥🤘🏽
@@gregd6706 even tho it is opinion that matters, most still vote for the live version! I ho for the conan version, but the studio version is not far behind
There is NO auto tune on this. Regarding the Conan performance: David was very sick and running a fever. The show used it in one spot because they didn’t think that he could hit the note- but he got up there and killed it! He was furious at the show for using it.
My favorite comment about this song is that Simon and Garfunkel's original version was a warning to the world. Disturbed's version is the anger that the warning was not heeded.
@@SoulSingerDiscovers After hearing this Paul Simon said that he and Art had written a song for their Generation, but Disturbed had created an Anthem for a New Generation. oh and David Draiman doesn't use Auto tune, that is actually his Voice
You're gonna be blown away by David Draiman's voice. He has one hell of a vocal range. There is absolutely NO auto tune in this song. Trust me. He's a metalhead from Chicago.
He was born and raised in Brooklyn to an Orthodox Jewish family. His grandfather is/was a premier Cantor and they had high hopes for David to follow the tradition... obviously he didn't. Try "A Reason to Fight" live. Besides singing, he talks and listens to testimony about surviving addiction, depression and suicide. It's incredibly powerful how he includes the audience in. Amazing video.
@@user-eu7nl4cq2q wrong, it's full of auto-tune, don't believe the marketing and his lies. As a professional audio engineer of 2 decades I promise you this has been artificially corrected.
@@BuzzaB77 haha you are funny. Maybe choose another profession, because you clearly do not know what you are talking about. To confuse vibrato (while breathing out through his nose) with auto-tune... oh my
@@SoulSingerDiscovers He doesn't deal with it. The band, the venues he sings at, like Conan, and every producer and studio he has used are not ALL lying. He doesn't use it. Get over it and yourself.
@@Ingolenuru oh dear sweetheart. Perhaps you should check that because David himself said he ‘was forced to use pitch correction on the show because of sickness’ and made a big fuss about it. If you’re going to be a mindless sheep at least check your facts first. Bah little sheep. Also, I would get over myself but people like you keep hate watching my content and engaging so no. I won’t. 💋
Seen him in concert this is how he sounds. No auto tune used. Down with the Sickness is good one for their traditional rock. Their videos are amazing. Hey You is my current favorite.
Oh pleez yes there is pitch correction all over it and that's fine it's studio recording. There is overlay, dubbing and multiple track on most recordings people need get over it. I seen a muscian channel run the software over it!!!!! All tracks are cleaned on studio releases
@@hays9008 finally!!!!! Someone who understands that A) most studio recording of massive artists have be treated in some way and B) it’s not the end of the world and doesn’t mean anyone isn’t talented. Thank you, dear God! 😊💪
As iconic as the original Simon & Garfunkle version was, I always felt there was a major disconnect between the happy and poppy sound on the song, and the dark melancholy and anger of the lyrical message. THIS is how this song was always meant to be done!
So true. I love S&G. They're my fave road trip music. But this cover grabs me in a way the original never did. This isn't a happy song, although it ends with hope.
There is absolutely NOT auto-tune going on. There is a live version of this (which is even better if possible) on the Conan show where the producers added auto-tune because David was sick that day. When he realized it, he was angry. He doesn't like it, and takes pride in not using it. He was trained as a cantor and just had that level of control of his voice.
wrong, I'm a professional audio engineer and musician of 22 years and I promise you auto-tune is all over this recording, AND the live performances. to a trained ear it is both obvious and unmistakable. horrible to listen to. the fact that he's denied is just embarrassing any audio professional can hear the truth. either that or he has been careful with his words and said "auto-tune" specifically wasn't used, because that is not the only way of artificially correcting a vocal.
as a 41-year veteran of the entertainment industry i began mixing 20 years before the PM5D was released. Every sound preformed through a professional audio rig has processing, it's required for tuning to the room. with that being said, i do not hear any auto-tune. just a man with a unique singing style, and an insane level of control. we can agree to disagree. @@BuzzaB77
Paul Simon loved this cover. I love both mainly because Simon and Garfunkel's felt like a warning to their generation about the cost of isolationism, censorship, and the worship of the sensational materialism vs David's vocal which feels both sad and furious about how those warnings went unheeded and we are living in a time that we were warned about. It's all about the thickness.
In the video, I think they projected-out the hazards of ignoring those well founded warnings from nearly 60 years ago... Pisses me off too. A LOT. rl 🤘👹🤘
I see that others have suggested the Conan Performance. I agree because there is a 20-piece orchestra behind him for it, the backstage people came out to see who was singing, audience members said the applause and standing ovation lasted over 10 minutes, that performance was nominated for a Grammy, and it got over 100 million views. I would like the have a DVD of the video of the studio version with the audio of the Conan Show. David was sick with a fever when he did the Conan Show and still pulled it off. I am 76 and have heard the Simon & Garfunkel version and many others since but it was when I heard the version by Disturbed that I understood the song. The song "Hold on to Memories" is done very powerfully, simply, and cleanly; you might enjoy that one.
David Draiman...amazing range and control...a powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to rasp/distortion/vocal fry and back on a dime, which is incredibly difficult to do . He is so unique as he actually puts vibrato on his distortion!....also VERY difficult to do...one of the best male vocalists on the planet imho. Loved your reaction Melisa!
It’s very impressive. I think this song really comes into its own towards the end. His expression on some of the more distorted sections gives the song a lot of emotional hit. Thank you so much for watching Ruthie 🥰
@@SoulSingerDiscovers The entire song is a progression in emphasis from beginning to end, each layer building on the next to tell the story. ... anger/warning that the original melodic warning (by Simon + Garfunkel) was not heeded.
David Draiman is born and raised in New York to a Jewish family. his parents put him in the orthodox school. he made his way thru school with several degrees and is a highly trained Shaiman i think they are called. he was teaching thru school and had a well and high paying job in hospital administration and gave it up to join Disturbed because he said that singing has always been his calling.
Disturbed is my fave band. They are a heavy metal band. But people say how Sound of Silence is different than their usual. Not sure I agree. Their songs are melodious even when they are heavy. And they have several songs like this one. They are more versatile than people think.
Melisa, loved your comments! I'm much older than you, grew up with Simon and Garfunkel. Love them. I love this version more. It speaks of today as the S&G song didn't. David had some classical training, opera, I read. The band does one cover a year. For this, they slowed it down and made it darker. Spent a lot on the video to make it right. Works completely. Have read that this is the only cover of this song that Paul Simon likes. I'm looking forward to more of your reactions. Thanks! And when he did the Conan show, he was sick. He also has some serious throat problems and manages it with diet, a healthy life-style and I don't know what else. It's all about the voice. For which I'm really grateful! Thanks for your work, Melissa!
His voice is a beast, auto tone would not even cross his mind. His range is amazing and it’s real. His cantor background gave him his range, absolutely awesome.
I grew up with the Simon and Garfunkel version growing up in the 80s. And I believe I won’t be able to listen to that version ever again. I think this version gets the point of the song across better.
David Draiman was classically trained as a cantor that sings liturgical music and leads prayer in a synagogue, so taking his classical vocal training mixing it with his aggressive rock style of singing truely one of a kind
Hi Melissa, I loved the way you expressed yourself in reaction to this amazing cover of a classic song from the '60's. The thing which always amazes me when I hear David Draiman sing anything, is that he never seems to strain his incredible voice. His range is outstanding and his delivery seems effortless. I hear he HATES using 'Auto-Tune' (as others have said) which is so so impressive. I'd like to recommend Disturbed's cover of the old Genesis track 'Land Of Confusion' it's a brilliant video and once again, David's voice is outstanding. If you check it out, let us know what you think. Cheers! 🙋♂
Oh that’s sounds amazing! I’ll check it out. Yeah he really does have a great command of what he’s doing. Switching from clean vocals to fry is so impressive when done with such ease 😊💪
You should redo this song but the live version on the Conan show. He was even sick during that performance. I think that will really knock your socks off. Brings me to tears every single time
I watched a breakdown of this song. It did appear to have some pitch correction done, but not full auto tune. Normally David does not use auto tune live (conan version was against his wishes) and he really doesn't need it.
Yeah we sent a message to some producer friends to ask if there was anything. They all were very noncommittal but they agree there is most likely pitch correction. Tbh he’s a great vocalist, and his performance on Conan was glorious 😊💪
Well I’m pretty sure it is so I’ve sent it over to a discord of producers so we can put it to bed. Not that I think it matter, he’s a great vocalist 😊💪
Many people will recommend the live version from Conan, but for me, if you really want to hear the greatest version of this song, check out the one with Myles Kennedy doing the harmony. It's stunning.
No there is no auto tune David D. In interviews says he hates that stuff & it would be best to watch his live on Conan Obrien version it is so much better Paul Simon actually called him personally told him it was the best cover of the song he ever heard & actually promoted it on his social media. Also, David D. Is classically trained.
That is not auto-tune. David loses his mind when anyone uses auto-tune. If you listen to this live on Conan you will hear one spot where the show used auto-tune and David was pissed about it. He is classically trained as a cantor, his voice can do that on its own.
Sorry budola! It’s is auto tuned. You can hear it kicking in. There’s absolutely no shame in using it. It doesn’t say his intonation isn’t good enough it just says that in this track the microscopic way with which we listen to the lead probably wouldn’t forgive tiny fluctuations in pitch. I have seen the live and he does a great job 😊👍
I know I haven't the ability to discern Auto tune, however there are other vocal analysts I respect e.g. the charismatic voice and she doesn't identify any auto tune.
@@julianginniver5785 the charismatic voice is great but she’s a performer like anyone else. Siding with her audience on something that’s not true I’m sure makes sense to her. Personally, if saying things I don’t mean, and being agreeable is the only way to have a large following. I’m quite happy with a small following where I pander to no one. Again, it’s not a judgement, he’s a great vocalist 😊
Just because lots of unqualified people say a thing doesn’t make it so dear. Lots of obnoxious people with no experience say the earths flat and I disagree with those bumpkins too 💋😊
To answer your question as to should he - they, have done the song. Absolutely.. An amazing cover and a song that speaks to today maybe more than it did then.
It is fun to watch you make comments about singers that those of us that already know it know "haha she has no idea what is coming".... Especially in a song like this that keeps ELEVATING and changing...
Hold on to your hat!… Disturbed is nothing like ‘The Sound Of Silence’David(singer), used to be a Cantor for much of his youth and has an awesome range.
Sorry to disappoint…David doesn’t use auto tune. You need to check his live performance on Conan. He is fantastic live and his live performances are awesome! Great singer. His band Disturbed is Heavy Metal so this is a softer side of this band.
No disappointment here, he is absolutely pitch corrected in this track but tbh pitch correction is pretty standard for a lot of projects this size. Still an amazing singer!
David neither uses nor needs autotune. He has a natural range of B♭1-G♯5 and, as was said in another comment, all of the resonances and vibrato are him, and him alone.
Pitch correction or not, this statement is just straight up incorrect. Any singer who is recorded is no longer ‘just them’. Mics, rooms, EQ, plug-ins. No one’s voice if recorded is just them. But pop off sis
@@SoulSingerDiscovers Ok, you go ahead and mince words. You know exactly what I mean, though. By the time you're mixed and mastered you don't sound exactly like you did in the booth, either but that doesn't mean you had pitch correction applied. You heard auto-tune where there's no auto-tune. Don't straw-man it, just accept the error and move on.
@@terraphon go and read the pinned comment and click the link. The error is embarrassingly yours. Let me guess you read an interview where David talked about how he hates it. You believed a celebrity was speaking facts and now youre butt hurt because you don’t understand what it actually means. What an absolute clown. I bet your Facebook is filled with sensational articles you cite to people in real arguments. 😂
You David a great disservice by accusing him of auto- tuning. He is a classically trained singer who prides himself in every sound he makes being his voice alone. What you hear is an amazing vocalist with incredible control.
There’s no accusation here Fi because pitch correction isn’t something to be upset about loads of acts over the past twenty years use it. It doesn’t mean someone lacks talent. The fact that David had to publicly say he wouldn’t use it is more representative of Joe Public not understanding what it is, so willing to skate him for it, than it is of it actually being a bad thing to use. Talented singers use it regularly.
So classically trained or not, humans aren’t capable of completely perfect intonation. A little pitch correction is no big deal. He’s still some singer 👍
I don't know why fans insist there is no auto-tune or pitch correction when there obviously is. David is good enough that there is no need in it but they do it anyway.
If anyone tells you this song isn’t representative of Disturbed because there’s no heavy guitar and drums, they’re obviously correct. HOWEVER, if anyone tries to tell you it’s not representative of David’s voice, they are absolutely and severely mistaken. What caught your attention at 10:15 to 10:20 is THE David Draiman sound. I would recommend 10,000 Fists or Stricken next, partially because of the range and because they’re “classic“ Disturbed songs, old and very well loved by fans so no one will complain about what’s “representative” of their sound.
Wow, you have an excellent voice. I bet you do an amazing version of I See Red. I've watched both versions, studio and live, of the Sound of Silence by Disturbed probably 300+ times and my body still gets chills.
Ah yes! When in doubt, say a bunch of bland bullshit or post lyrics you didn’t write to avoid admitting you messed up your judgement. Jog on now you silly sausage. Or post a haiku 😂
He's good, their appearance on Conan live is proof . You said people avoid R's singing , you should check Alice in Chains song Love Hate Love , live at the Moore . Lane adds R's when there are none. Second favorite male singer after Rob.
Knew you were Scottish! I have a friend in the Shetland Islands. David Draiman was trained as a Jewish Cantor. NO! No autotune!!! A little post work but no autotune! He GLARED on camera at the sound guy on Conan for using it! What happened after..... He chose to extend the consonants for effect - the "r" and "n"..... "Down With The Sickness"
I'm sure so many have told you, that if you have doubts, you can check out his live performance of this on "Conan" show. (American late night talk show)
Very “disturbing “ cover. Amazing singer. No auto tune. Great reaction. I’m a Nightwish fan, but I would like to recommend Ayreon “ Everybody Dies” live. I think you might enjoy it.
I am really enjoying your reactions and analysis.Well done. David is an excellent singer and I think he hits the emotional aspects of this song because of his training as a chazzan. I agree with many of your commentators; you should definitely check out his performance on Conan. Whether you do it as reaction or just for yourself is up to you. FYI Jinjer and Disturbed are going to be touring the US together this summer. That is going to be an amazing concert.
Thanks Jeff! I appreciate it. Yeah I checked it out and his performance is fantastic! He is wonderful. Holy crap that sounds amazing! I would pay too dollar for that gig 😊💪
I really enjoy your reactions and the way you bring your personality and insights into it! :) Hard to pick just one more Disturbed song to react to, they have so many good ones. I'd recommend maybe "Stricken" next.
Draiman has excellent control of his voice, and I can't hear any autotune at the beginning of this recording. Let allone the fact that he is known for absolutely opposing autotune. Maybe you want to listen to his live performance at the Conan O'Brian Show. He was sick there but still had a stunning control.
First of all there is no auto tune in this son, it is purely his voice. Second, as someone who grew up in the age of Simon and Garfunkel, I can say that this version is far superior to the original. The emotion that it inspires is amazing and I have never FELT that song in the same way. In my opinion, this version is far superior to the original because there is so much more emotion in this version.
With respect, I don’t think growing up listening to to a band or act makes your opinion in anyway more relevant, but I do enjoy your passion and I love that you love this song, truly 😊
Dont jump to conclussions. This is a very well trained vocalist. Doesnt use auto tune. Listen to Conan live performance. He was very ill when he did the show and they did auto tune against Mr Draiman since wishes.
I'm a dedicated Slayer fan but I appreciate classic stuff like Simon and Garfunkel. This is the best version of "The Sound of Silence" that I ever heard and it is also the only Disturbed song I like
ok the obvious react for disturbed is down with the sickness. it's their most popular, you cant go wrong there. but it's a total different atmosphere, it's not a power ballad, it's a straight metal song. disturbed is mostly a heavy band.
They used pitch correction on this track and there was a fight between DD and the show about them putting pitch correction on his live performance also. Doesn’t matter he’s a great vocalist
You may have been led to think (because of so many songs in the last forty years done that way) that trilling and running on notes in a song conveys passion or emotion; maybe now you see that the opposite is actually true - holding and sustaining a note - with a clear, trained and unaltered voice conveys so, so much more honesty and sincerity of emotion it raises the bar to another level altogether. You got and felt the message in the words, didn't you?
LOL I am the same as you; don't TELL me to do something, ASK me to do it, you are far more likely to get it done quickly. Love your reaction & as an expat Scot love your accent.
David the singer of disturbed is against autotune. That’s all him. His Conan live you can see how well he sings. Plus during his live on Conan he was sick and still killed it.
If you look up info on the conan performance David said he was sick and ‘furious’ the show used pitch correction. He used it live and here. Sadly people love David so much that they believe anything he says in an interview. He’s a great vocalist but this silly boomer attitude of ‘vocal manipulation bad’ is sooooo stupid. It has been and will be the standard for thousands of high level singers, people aren’t even aware of. I guarantee you enjoy the music of singers who use auto tune all the time and don’t even know it.
