I'd live in a country even on a string budget. Why? Because I want to understand how a society functions. Luxury is a bore intellectually, as viewing things afar that superficial experiences really are. I've lived in three foreign countries, sometimes half poor. I know what I think about this. Like when you live in Italy, where Pavarotti is from. There are not even the structures to live a life in the US or elsewhere. It's a system designed for a totally different life. Only when you talk to the people will you understand why.

You misunderstood the conductors behavior: he actually waited for Pavarotti to end his phrase and halted the Orchestra, so that they wait for the master, before they go one. So in this moment it‘s actually Luciano „in command“ of the whole orchestra, via the conductor.

100% correct. The orchestra is accompanying the singer and it's the conductor who must follow the singer and Zubin Mehta does it perfectly.

This guy was one of the most incredible opera singers in all of history. I saw him in Lima, Peru, a number of years ago and will never forget it.... pure magic! His voice is so good; you'll never hear another like him.... ever. Thanks for reacting to this, it and your reaction were great!!

He's a successor to the 1st recorded "greatest Italian tenor ever", from early 20th Century, Enrico Caruso. Caruso was so good that even on scratchy, crappy old recordings his voice was still stunning.

Caruso died in 1921 The microphone was invented in 1925! All the Opera experts say he's the best including Pavarotti! Also the people who heard Caruso LIVE said the Three tenors couldn't even compare with him! You are listening to revised Primitive recordings! So you'll never know unless you watch A & E Biography on him. Or go to the Caruso Museum. But to say to the Greatest of all the greats he sings like crap is way beyond ridiculous!!!

Loved your reaction. He was the voice of God on this Earth. Also, the conductor was not directing Pavaroti, he was directing the Orchestra only. He was directing the music to the timing of Pavaroti's singing so that his high and low notes would correspond to the Orchestra's music timing.

One of my all-time favorites. Pavarotti could connect to anyone, no matter what their background or their preference for music, when he sang, everyone was held in place to listen. This song always brings a tear to my eye when I hear it. So glad you've gotten to experience it as well!

I loved this man. He is a treasure. I love all music, and I've heard Luciano sing Nessun Dorma at least a 100 times. I choke up every time at the end of his performance. How powerful. I loved your reaction to this man - I KNEW you would not believe how good his performance would be. It was a sad day when he died.

The very best tenor to ever have lived and here he is singing the epitome of tenor arias. Flawless, with power and passion as only this man could achieve. His expression at the conclusion shows just how moved he was to share his gift with all who would listen. Bravo & thank you for sharing. The emotional side of the singer's performance really got to me. I wasn't expecting that. Sure it was inspiring and beautifully sung, and there is grandeur about the performance but it somehow had me close to tears at the end. I can't explain why.

What's so impressive beyond his performance is the very end when he hits his final astonishing note & then takes it even higher with clarity that is supernatural. Luciano is in the zone. Possessed by the hand of God. Look at his eyes just before he closes them & then his mouth. He isn't with us at that moment. He's within the music.

@@Spo-Dee-O-Dee - Eric -- he performed enough times live throughout his career with famous singers, conductors & orchestra musicians to confirm that he could sing live. If he resorted to some technical assistance later in life, especially when he was ill, so be it. It wouldn't be the first time someone was "helped" to get through a performance. He certainly never needed autotune hocus-pocus like so many so-called "divas" rely on today. And the opera audience? If you fake it with them your career goes into the toilet real fast. You know what I mean.

@@Spo-Dee-O-Dee - You are right about that, eric. But, after all, the human voice is human. It can fail you. Artists do have bad nights. It's the people sitting in the audience who never understand how hard it is to do what Luciano did. They expect to hear him as perfect as the recording. Maybe that's where they should be -- at home listening to the CD. I try to be forgiving when it comes to a live performance, except when it's blatantly shit because the singer was drunk or unprepared. For all we know Luciano may have been ill, had a cold, sore throat, and ate cold macaroni. I have heard lesser singers sing flat, especially people like Robert Plant. That performance of opera by Aretha Franklin more than a decade ago when Luciano took ill & didn't perform was barely passable. And Aretha is a great singer -- but she's no opera singer.

@@Spo-Dee-O-Dee- I do understand when Aretha was asked to do this she was visibly nervous. Amazing when a performer at that level gets butterflies. But, she knew she was not in her comfort zone but probably wanted the challenge. I give her credit for being brave enough to step forward & do something she wasn't really prepared for. But she's a pro. Most opera aficionados of course appreciated her effort but it wasn't without criticism. That's probably what Aretha didn't want to face. I don't blame her. Vince Gill faced the same situation live & talked about it when he was asked to perform a Beach Boys song -- "Surf's Up." Gill admitted that he thought the song would be one of their simple beach songs but "Surf's Up," he said was an incredibly difficult song to sing. He was surprised. But Gill pulled it off just like Aretha had. Audiences have to realize that singing songs not part of your repertoire is not an easy thing to do. Look how many great singers have covered Elvis songs only to go down in flames. I couldn't do it eric.

@@Spo-Dee-O-Dee - That's my point eric. You have to listen to it in mind that this is a great singer from another genre but not an opera singer. Accept it. But the opera buffs are not as forgiving as rock, folk, country & blues audiences. (I left jazz & classical out because they can be pretty strict & constipated as well). Yes, I was aware she sang it 2 days before because they must have had hints that Pavarotti would cancel. That was a wise alternate choice by the producers.

Turandot is the latest opera from Puccini! He died writing this opera from cancer treatment (his heart couldn’t take it !) it is very emotional! I have so much respect for him as many did after he died out of awe for his greatness! His deep emphatical and emotional insight in our struggles fear love and desperation makes him a translator of our journey through life ! A warm companion, a loyal friend who went through it all and confides this with us

I had the honour of seeing him in concert many years ago. I cannot begin to explain the feelings stirred in me when he sang, and this song literally laid my senses wide open. I couldn’t breathe at the end and burst into tears. I am 67 years old now and have heard many superb singers over the years but this man is beyond compare. ❤️

Luciano entered into the meaning of the music and the story of the opera and truly sang from the heart, thus the reason you could understand what the music was about even if you didn't have its translation. His voice was so expressive and beautiful that he could draw you into anything he sang. He was a master and my personal favorite. Not surprised at your reaction to this piece, and I think a person would have to be totally void of feeling not to be overwhelmed at this performance. Glad you loved it!!

Though I've listened to this performance many times...this was the first time for me with English subtitles. I knew the story to the song and basic meaning of the words but never witnessed during the performance. It's not raining but my cheeks were wet. Thoroughly enjoyed ur reaction. Ty again. Schnell, the first time I heard him was in a movie called "Yes Giorgio." It's an old movie, but the music was great. He blew me away! I had never heard such power! I found your channel searching for this song to post to a music group on Facebook. Glad I did, really enjoyed your reaction. 😊

Orchestral musician here. Enjoyed your vid! To answer your question about the orchestra - the *Conductor* is the baton-wielding bloke on the podium (in this concert, the veteran Maestro Zubin Mehta, who generally helmed these “Three Tenors” events). And yes, as the central musician who basically “plays” the orchestra, much as we play our instruments, the Conductor’s job is to lead, convince, and compel the ensemble to play the piece as the composer intended it, as the Conductor interprets it in their head, and as the other collaborators (like Pavarotti here) would like it, as well. Mr Mehta knew Pavarotti very well by this point, so they worked together as freely and easily as Jazz musicians, and you can certainly feel the electric results. Enjoy your musical travels! 😎👍🏻

It's my belief that in every genre of music there are songs/performances which transcend the genre itself, and this is one of them. Even those who do not normally (or ever) listen to classical vocal music will be moved by this performance -- it is beyond amazing! Of course, there are other vocal performances of the past which similarly transcend their genre and touch our hearts at a deep level. For example, there is "Hurt" by Johnny Cash, "Sound of Silence" by Disturbed (official music video), and maybe one of the most amazing pop musical performance is "Unchained Melody" by Bobby Hatfield (specifically the "Righteous Brothers" live performance on the 1965 Andy Williams show -- Bobby is wearing a salmon colored jacket). These recommendations are not new to the reaction video community -- they are probably the most reacted-to videos on RU-vid. Another "sleeper" for the emotional impact of the singer and lyrics is "The Story" by Brandi Carlile (official video). And another amazing song for its emotional impact is "Silent Lucidity" by Queensryche. I hope you can eventually cover the ones mentioned above if you haven't already, and thank you again for reacting and analyzing this out-of-this world performance by Pavarotti.

It was a phenomenal performance. Many people don't realize that the orchestrated conductor follows the tempo and timing of the performing singer and not the other way around. That's why you see the conductor pause a bit waiting to conduct the orchestra. It's really an amazing connection they share.

Me too! I'm almost 50 and grew up listening to Pavarotti; it never would have occurred to me to recommend him, because I always assume everyone knows who he is. It's a different world now....

@@michellewestlake6766 I just watched another reactor--a Brit who supposedly has a start-up record producing company--watch Pink Floyd for the first time the other day. And another young guy who watched Queen for the first time. They were like, "wow, these guys are good!" LOL. It's all music I grew up knowing and thinking was like, super important, so it's very odd to watch younger generations who are involved in music themselves who haven't heard it. Then again, I'm pretty out of touch with what the "kids" are listening to these days, so I guess I shouldn't talk....I'd be considered a major stick in the mud.

Before you even make any stops, I am paused and will make a prediction. While feeling the genuine emotional depth Pavarotti went to in this LA performance, you will feel a rush of emotion like you have never felt come on so fast. I was fortunate enough to ask him about that expression on his face at the close and his answer was brilliant. But that story is for another comment. Long, lol. Beautifully powerful voice and my friend, you have now arrived at hearing one of the most important voices in recorded human history. Not an overstatement. 😎

Franco Corelli, singing Nessun Dorma, from Turandot or E Lucevan Le Stelle Brilliant arias, he was from the 60s amazing power with the most beautiful singing. E lucevan le Stelle is only short but might pull your heartstrings, one of my hero's, He was a good looking man in his day. What always blows me away about Pavarotti is how anyone can tell, just from the first note, how brilliant his voice is. Every single reaction video I've seen (and I'm slightly addicted to them) has had that "whoa" from the second he opens his mouth. Something about the power, beauty and control he will go on to show throughout the song is audible immediately, even if (like me) your ear is totally untrained. For him to start from such a high point, and then just keep escalating, is truly astonishing.

This is from the Three Tenors concert, a lead in to the FIFA World Cup of 1990. The conductor is the great maestro Zubin Metha and he is conducting TWO orchestras. At the end of the concert, as part of the encore, Pavarotti is joined by Jose Carreras and Placido Domingo for an even greater rendition of this aria with the three great voices combined. The concert was performed in the very atmospheric setting of the Baths of Caracalla in Rome and the live audience around the World was estimated at 800 million. The recording of this concert is in the Guinness World Records book as the highest selling classical music recording.
