And that "you" in The Unforgiven II is his mom. James mentioned she in the lyrics and also the video shows the umbilical cord that maintains James connected to the stone that represents his mom's grave. Just an amazing visuals and lyrics!!! 🤘🏼🎶

It's 2022, it's time to admit that "Load" and "Re-Load" were fantastic albums. Not as heavy as the big 5, but they illustrate Metallica's ability to adapt to the times, to grow as musicians and people.

The way I see it is the good songs off of Load and Reload are really good, if not great (even fantastic is some cases), but the bad ones, are pretty goddamn bad, cringey, or at best, extremely forgettable. If you take the best songs off of both albums (which is subjective) you'd have the perfect '90s Metallica album

The lyrics describe an introverted guy who finally finds a girl that understands what it means to be lonely. The "door" spoken of in the song is the guy's soul, and the girl is the only person who has ever been able to make it "crack open." She dies ("The door is closed, so are your eyes"), and he goes on waiting for death, alone again, because she was the only one with the "key" to his soul. I can almost relate to this song...I've yet to meet that girl.

I think the line "I take this key and I bury it in you, because you're unforgiven too" doesn't really imply that she just died but more specifically that he killed her, whether that be literally or metaphorically. I think burying the key represents him leaving the idea of what could have been (them being together) in her memory, knowing that now it won't happen (hence why it's buried) because he can't forgive her, just like the rest of the world.

3 will not disappoint. I would say the general interpretation is that the original is about being resentful of being forced out of a normal childhood due to strict conformity, the second is growing and realizing others who love you have similar demons in their past lives. 3 is the recognition in understanding that going through life as resentful and bitter from childhood was a choice, in a sense coming to peace with that the person who kept him shackled with resentment was he himself.

... The door is closed, so are your eyes, but now I see the sun. He managed to move through everything, he learned how to use the key. And he discovered that the others are struggling too, and suffering too, trying to move through. So, when he can see the Sun, he no longer need the key: "I'll take this key, and I bury it at you" - he goes through the opened door to the Sun, and leaves the key, so that the others could open that door to light. He could not go, holding that key. And there's one more thing, very deep and complicated to understand. Last words "Never free, never me" - you are not you, but a person, who you suppose yourself to be. And you're not free, until you open you true self

Lay beside me, tell me what they've done Speak the words I wanna hear, to make my demons run - He meets a woman who had a similar childhood to him. The door is locked now, but it's open if you're true If you can understand the me, than I can understand the you - He has closed himself off from the world and is considering opening up for her, as long as she is “true” and not like the rest of the world. Lay beside me, under wicked sky The black of day, dark of night, we share this paralyze - He believes he has found someone he can open up to, that they can be two against the world. The door cracks open, but there's no sun shining through Black heart scarring darker still, but there's no sun shining through No, there's no sun shining through No, there's no sun shining... - Sunlight is symbolic of purity and safety. He opens the ‘door’ to his heart, but she betrays him like the rest of the world, being impure like the rest of the world. ‘Black heart scarring still’ is saying how when he thinks that he cannot have anything worse happen, it does. Come lay beside me, this won't hurt I swear „She loves me not, she loves me still“, but she'll never love again She lay beside me, but she'll be there when I'm gone Black heart scarring darker still, yes she'll be there when I'm gone Yes, she'll be there when I'm gone Dead sure she'll be there... - In a sudden rage, he kills her. He tries to justify it by saying that she never loved him, but he realized that she did love him even though she lied / cheated / whatever. The meaning of ‘She’ll be there when I’m gone’ is pretty obvious; he is saying that he’ll see her again in heaven / hell / afterlife. Lay beside me, tell me what I've done The door is closed, so are you're eyes But now I see the sun, now I see the sun Yes now I see IT..... - After killing her, he closes back up and sees the sun. He feels safe being alone and closed off from the world, the world is only there to hurt him. I take this key (never free...) and I bury it (never me...) in you - Is symbolic of killing her for betraying him. He takes the key to his heart and buries it along with her. Because you're unforgiven too.... - Is referencing the first song. In the first song, he called everyone who wronged him “Unforgiven,” so now he says she is “Unforgiven too”, the same as the world, out there only to hurt him

I don't know for certain, but I always thought that Kirk was using a "B bender Fender Telecaster " guitar during that "country" part when you mentioned that it sounded like country music. Please respond all you guitar nerds! For Lilly, a "B-bender" is a guitar that has a mechanism in the body of the guitar that is attached to the "B" string of the guitar. When you bend down the neck of the guitar while playing the "B" string it creates a pitch shift. Much like what a whammy bar would do. I never saw the point of it. A whammy bar (tremolo bar) or any number of effects pedals could give the same effect. Actually, now that I listen again, the b-bender is very useful when combining notes. I guess that's it's purpose.

It's interesting to hear all three parts together, while reading the lyrics, a bit of a repetitive theme but it's what James wanted to talk about back then. And yes, it's Country Rock, something most Metalheads don't know much about, or don't like, because 90% of Metalheads don't like anything outside of Metal. That's why most Metalheads hate Metallica because they experimented with other musical styles and marketed themselves in the 90's by moving away from Thrash Metal, cutting their hair, becoming famous and making more money.

This song is tough to interpret, some say that it’s about him not being able to forgive her, others say that it’s about them being perfect for each other because she’s unforgiven like him,I think It tells a story,it starts off with him thinking this relationship can’t work cus something about her reminds him of his past,of what others have done to him,so he views her as being unforgiven like them, but as time passes he realizes that the reason why she reminds him of that time,is because he sees himself at that time in her,he realizes that she’s been through the same shit as him,so it transitions from I can’t forgive you cus you’re like them to u have similar experiences to me you’re like me,you are also unforgiven.

Unforgiven III has more of the metal you'd be looking for in a Metallica song but revisits the tone of the first Unforgiven. I like this version, but it is my least favorite of the Unforgiven Trilogy. Another song I would look into that is on the Reload record is Fuel.

After this trilogy you should visit megadeth because the lead singer dave mustaine had a role in the older metallica songs. If you do decide to check it out I would start with the "symphony of destruction"

Like from all reactions to Metallica you've done so far, you just missed a few songs :). Like "Turn the page" and actually the the whole album "Master Of Puppets". And maybe one of there fun songs "whiskey in a jar".
