This song comes straight from James childhood where his parents didn't use conventional medical treatment for his mother who had cancer and left it to faith to heal her, but she died.

Yes, it’s very similar to Maynard James Keenan who also lost his mother because she put her “faith” in her “god” to heal her instead of medicine and medical treatment that ACTUALLY EXIST!!! I dealt with people like this as well, including when I was deployed. I used to have discussions with guys about their beliefs because I remember when sirens would go off and he would crawl under his desk and start praying to his “god” and then he would say that was the reason we didn’t get bombed or whatever at that time to which I just shook my head because instead the attack took place somewhere else and people died. It just like with Tornadoes, when a family would be saying “god saved us” meanwhile a family including a new born baby was killed three blocks away. It just blows my mind the way people who believe in that stuff think. As a realist/Atheist I can’t wrap my head around it.

@@ProudBostonian Hear Hear!!!! 👏👏👏👏 We're all on our own, there is no GOD. This is a BS fairytale that's been passed down throughout the ages, and it started thousands of years before the coming of Christ in many different cultures around the planet. It has been passed down and brainwashed into us all from birth that a Supreme Being is in control of our lives, our existence and the cause of our creation. Total and utter BS 🖕🖕. This song hits home probably just as hard for me as it did for James and many many others. My grandmother also died from cancer after seeking medical care and because she wasn't progressing in her recovery as fast as she thought God would heal her, the doctors said was coming along nicely though, she decided to let Jesus take the wheel and passed away 3 weeks later. So for all of you who think Your God is going to save you, dream on. THERE IS NO GOD!!!! This song says it all people, " FOLLOW THE GOD THAT FAILED" YEAH YEAH!!! BROKEN IS THE PROMISE, BETRAYAL!! BETRAYALLLL YEAH!!!!

That is what many still don't see, it is what makes Metallica different from the rest of the bands and it is in a group of very few bands with those characteristics. The composition, the melody, the deep lyrics in his songs. It is not always about going as fast as possible if the song is not accompanied by good lyrics. In his melodies you can find the feeling that is in his lyrics. That's why it's my favorite band.

The guitar solo for this song was all Kirk Hammett. Jason Newsted, Kirk Hammett, and Lars Ulrich were going through divorces during the making of this album. “Lars, Jason and I were going through divorces,” Hammett told Playboy in 2001. “I was an emotional wreck. I was trying to take those feeling of guilt and failure and channel them into the music, to get something positive out of it. Jason and Lars were too, and I think that has a lot to do with why the Black Album sounds the way it does.” - Kirk Hammett James had also made the songs more introspective for this album because he knew that the lyrics would end up being more relative to a universal audience. "“It just got a little too easy to keep writing lyrics like the Justice… shit,” he confessed to Classic Rock. “Itʼs too easy to watch the news and write a fucking tune about what you saw. Writing shit from within is a lot harder than writing the political shit, but once itʼs out it feels a lot easier to put your weight behind, especially live.” - James Hetfield The animosity and tension that was featured in the documentary "A year and a half in the life of Metallica" certainly did add to the emotion that was being put on full display on this album in my opinion.

I always felt this is part 1 of the James Trilogy. On this song, he gets out his pain and frustration over his mother’s death, in “Mama Said” on the Load album, he gains empathy and understanding of his mother despite their disagreements, and “Fixxxer” on Reload is James resolving his feelings towards his father, who walked out when things got tough.

I have witnessed Doctors have no reason for why my mother in law is still alive after being told she would be gone in 24 hours. I watched my baby brother get hit by a car, head hit the windsheld and the road. We were told he wouldn't survive. He did. We were told he would never be able to talk and walk. He's doing both. He's still alive and recovering from TBT but getting better every day. Miracles happen. God is real . But in each of those situation, we didn't turn our backs on the people God put in place here on Earth to help. We just more importantly, leaned on God. We prayed for the guidance of those Doctors to lead us to the best possible outcome. And here we are. God can and still does work wonderous miracles but he also lets the world work as it does.

Me personally when it comes to songs that represented James’s childhood I personally thought that the song Dyers Eve was so much more of a raw powerful emotional experience then The God That Failed. Especially with the guitar playing and that song you can really feel the raw emotion and anger that is being expressed within the lyrics and James’s guitar Riffs.

Something kinda neat about the intro; As they play the first few chords during the "call-and-response" part, I believe you can faintly hear the sound of a shotgun cocking, something you can see James recording in the videos chronicling the making of the black album.

This song was directed at everyone who bank entirely on their faith being the solution to everything and not willing to do the work that is required to make their lives better... James Hetfield's mom was convinced by her church that her cancer would be cured by prayer and she would be healed by "God"... her faith and lack of comprehension ended up costing her life, because she refused medical treatment. Pride can be a crutch at times because people are not willing to admit defeat or concede that they have been wrong their entire lives... so, they dig into their beliefs even harder. It's frustrating dealing w/ people who r not willing to compromise based on misguided beliefs. I was raised under quasi-religious teachings ... and I learned later on that imposition of beliefs is not the way to go... Beating a faith into an individual can be catastrophic, because when they realize later on that they have been lied to or misled... their minds cannot adjust to reality and they end up self-medicating or self-destructing. In James Hetfield's case, he lost himself in alcohol abuse and reckless behavior (Metallica was often called 'Alcoholica') ... He recalled coming home from tour in Metallica's early years and had made no money because he spent days on the road getting drunk and destroying property offstage (The costs were deducted by their managers from his paycheck) ... James lamented that he "bought furniture for a bunch of promoters..." I tell people that they are free to believe whatever they wish to... but they should respect others' beliefs and not deride, condemn or attack them for it... and that course of action seems to be a common problem. Everyone seems to refer to "God" as their higher power, but a majority of them have no idea or comprehension of what "God" is... It may be the "will of God" that a hurricane lashes a coastal region, but how you prepare for it before and how u deal w/ the aftermath is entirely up to those who survive. People have a choice of helping those affected and in need of assistance... or just dismiss their plight and give in to apathy and ignorance. No one can say it was the will of a higher being to pick up a weapon and commit an atrocity against civilians or drop bombs on unsuspecting people and take lives... They chose to do that on their own, whether by obligation or threat or even free will. But devastating lives is reprehensible and atrocious... there is no justification to inflict misery, suffering and death on those who have done nothing to deserve that fate... Agnostics can argue that there is no consequence of any of our actions... but there is uncertainty about what awaits us when we pass away, and that is what we have to be wary of. Which is why we r obligated to handle our lives as best as we can w/ caution and awareness... not ignorance and self-medication. The presence of a "God" is irrelevant in my opinion... People r going to do whatever suits their fancy and wield their faith as a cudgel against those they dislike or carry out actions that have poor consequences. We all know that every single one of us is going to pass away, and we have no idea what lies on the other side of life... But the fact remains that we have lives to lead and we have a choice to be constructive, destructive, or even apathetic... There was a good chance that James Hetfield's mother would not have survived even if she had been treated for cancer, but we'll never know... Voivod's guitarist Denis 'Piggy' D'Amour was diagnosed w/ cancer in the 80's just as Voivod was starting to take off... Piggy underwent treatment and was finally declared cancer free... He spent the next 15 years writing, recording music and touring w/ Voivod... Sadly, he was diagnosed w/ colon cancer around '04 and passed away in 2005 at age 45. But getting treatment for cancer might be the difference between an early death... or a few more years of life. And it is your life to live, not God's...

This Song Is Actually About James's Mother Who Was A Christian Scientist. And Wasn't Afilliated With Any Medical Attention. When James Was Just 13, His Family Took A Turn. His Father Was Kicked Out Of The Family. And 3 Years Later When James Was 16, His Mother Suffered From Cancer And Refused Medical Attention Atrociously, And Believed In God That Could Save Her From Cancer. That Attempt Soon Backfires As She Dies From Cancer When James Was 16 Years Old. For The Next 2 Years, James Moved To His Older Brother's House, Where He Lived For The Next 2 Years. In The Lyrics For "The God That Failed," James Stated How God Could've Reacted If He Acted Quickly Enough To Solve This Emotional Tragedy. Line 1: "Broken The Promise, Betrayal." Line 2: "The Healing Hand, Held Backed By The Deepened Nail." Line 3: "Follow The God That Failed." Like We All Know, This Is Indeedly, Sad But True! -Mike's Railfan Studios
