Cliff Burton has to be the biggest "What If" in metal and music as a whole. He died way too young, but had already shown his talent and left a huge mark in music in the short time that he was here. Had he not passed away or survived and recovered, he would've changed the world even more with his music. Metallica would've flourished even more than they have as well.

This song is truly beautiful and haunting. I believe it follows a path of the stages of grief. It starts with serene instruments to illustrate life going peacefully along and building intensity and frenetic energy as the realization of something grim is setting in. The anger and frustration replaces the moments of shock with the guitar solos really giving a jarring in your face display, then that sudden pause and transition to solemn sounding symphonic stringed instruments almost like a requiem as acceptance sets in, and then re-emerges into a loud inspiring sounding anthem as the life that was is celebrated and saluting the loved one as they reflect on the great things his life meant to them. Finally back to where it started with the serene instruments as life cycle carries on. the "abrupt" ending is because that song bleeds into the intro to the next track "Dyer's Eve" There's no space between the two tracks; as one ends, the other is already chugging! Plus it's analogous to how Cliff was so suddenly ripped from their lives.

This song makes me emotional every single time. Just thinking about Cliff and how he died, just how tragic and so fucking random it was. I recorded a cover of this a long time ago, but lost it when the hard drive it was on crashed. I was so passed off. It wasn’t perfect, and it was only about 3/4ths of the total song, starting from after the first solo, but I put my heart into it. I had to sell all my guitar gear to pay bills a couple of years ago after playing for 30+ years. These past two years have been hell without being able to play. Guitar was my emotional outlet, it was how I de-stressed. Metallica and learning to play Metallica got me through high school. I was bullied mercilessly in my first two years of HS, and being able to come home, throw on an album and just rip through it on guitar made all the difference. I know I wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for that, I would have taken the short way out. Obviously being much older now and having a wife and child, I’d never do that, but not being able to play due to lack of a guitar and amp has led to some serious depression and serious stress related issues. Between being disabled and unable to exercise, my weight and the stress….at this point I’m not sure I have more than a couple of years left before I’m hit with a massive heart attack. It’s weird, I can almost sort of feel it around the corner….it’s disconcerting. I see a doctor every 6 months and my numbers are fine, but there’s that feeling of dread that’s hanging over me…I dunno. Sorry….that got a lot darker and deeper than I really meant it to, but I’ve always been one to just wear my thoughts and feelings on my sleeve and have never been afraid to throw them out there, it’s just how I am.

This Song In Tribute To The Legend Bassist, Cliff Burton. He Used To Be A Member Of The Band Of Trauma And When They Saw Him Play On Live Stage They Told Him "Man, You Are So Good, We Got To Steal You!" James Said. And After The They First Met, Cliff Joined Metallica In Year Of 1982 OR 1983. He Embarked On 3 Albums The Band Composed: Kill 'Em All (1983) Ride The Lightning (1984) Master Of Puppets (1986) During The Damage Inc. World Tour September 27, 1986, Their Tour Bus Made A Galloping Noise, And They Were Also In Sweden, Too. Their Tour Bus, Not Just The Galloping Noise, But Tipped Over! And Cliff Who Was On The Top Bunk At The Time, The Window Was Opened When This Happened. And Rolled Out Of The Bus As The Bus Tip Over Top Of Him Pinning Him And Killed Him Instantly. The Rest Were Mostly Disoriented From Being Awoken By The Crash, Were Screaming And Crying. But No One Knew Where Cliff Ended Up. Until Kirk Then Turned Around And Saw Cliff's Legs Sticking Out From Underneath The Bus. Frantic, The Bus Driver Came To The Scene And Tried To Pull Cliff's Blanket From Underneath Him Whilst Pinned To The Ground. James Atrociously Gave The Bus Driver A Reprecession. "Don't You Take That Away From Him!" Kirk Spoke First Before James And Said "WHAT ARE YOU DOING???!!!!" And James Also Described That He Felt Like That He Was Going To Kill Him If He Was Dead. Medical Services Arrived At The Scene Of Destruction. He Was Transported By An Ambulance To The Nearest Hospital; But To Their Instant Horror, He Wouldn't Make It. Cliff Was 24 Years Old When He Died; But His Legacy Lives On! The Same Year After Cliff's Passing, Metallica Found A New Bassist After Auctions Were Held. That Person Was Jason Newstead From Flotsam And Jetsam And Would Be Metallica Longest Or 2nd Longest Bassist To Be In The Band From 1986-2001 Until He Left The Band To Go Make His Own Band Called Echobrain But Only Made 1 Album, Don't Get Too Ahead Of Yourselves. Clifford Lee Burton Born In 1962 | Died In 1986 That Song Well Always Be In Dedication To You! -Mike's Railfan Studios

The first line, “When a man lies, he murders some part of the world." was taken from the 1981 fantasy film "Excalibur". The "lyrics" spoken at 8:05 are the words that are on Cliff's headstone.

This was the last song Cliff Burton wrote before his death. For any fan of Metallica, this is haunting!

He didn't actually write the song, but the intro and outro parts are based on something he wrote

This is one am amazing piece of music; cannot help feeling emotional at some parts. I would recommend you listed to the acoustic outro before jumping to Dyers Eve, as that is the reason this ends kind of abruptly.

5:27 this part still gives me chills and hits me right in feels. This is Cliff Burton's tribute, right here. I picture the band fighting to hold back tears while recording this part. The guys in Metallica paying homage to a bass and metal legend who taking taken away far too soon. RIP, Cliff Burton. Also: 8:03 this is actually Cliff Burton's voice.

The song to me makes me think of the story of Cliff's passing. It's peaceful as their bus rolls down the highway and life is good when the bus rolls suddenly and cliff is crushed. Thats when the heavy drums and guitars come in. Then Kirk's solo sounds like sirens like Cliff is being rushed to the hospital. Then it gets heavy again as Cliff is pronounced dead. Next is the violins and bass which sounds like a funeral. Next its heavy again as they must live with the grief they feel for their lost friend. And at the end the music gets peaceful again as life continues on but its cut short suddenly because its just the peace before the next storm, which is the next song on the track: Dyer's Eve.
