I don’t know man you ever seen that clip of James discovering drop D when recording the sad but true riff? Lmao it sound like a bass with distortion on almost. Then they decided to layer an extra guitar on. Lmaoooo. But yess heavy ass riff thanks to the amazing AFJA guitar tone.
Hugh Joelcock that wasn’t his first time playing drop D, but they did use an alternate tuning over sad but true, I wanna say they had another guitar tuned a step down and maybe something else to compliment it, I’ll have to look it up cuz it’s been forever since I’ve jammed that tune... but yes, that shit is hilarious and love the ‘earthquake’ effect with cut scenes of people freaking out lol.. love the Metallica behind the scenes stuff, comedy gold
At 5:57 when it gets to that part of the song, even after 100 listens, it always gives me goosebumps, especially when they cut to that clean tone. That middle part of the song always makes me damn near misty-eyed. So powerful, so sad, so beautiful. 🍻🤘🏻✌🏼
You're not wrong bro about the send-off part, but more than just that, this was their way of 'dealing' with this as they were kids basically, and they just went on tour in a couple of weeks after because they never really got into processing the loss of their brother. Also, the main riffs were written by Cliff, plus the lyrics which is why this is the last song credited to him and, obviously, the only one to be so on the Justice album. Always gives me goosbumps, ALWAYS! EDIT : Also... James plays a solo in this James has the main notes tattooed on his arm (James was the closest to Cliff) You're right about not playing it live, they only played ity for the first (and I beleive the only time) back in 2011 The lyrics were apparantely part of a poem (?) but Cliff used to say this line often, and if I'm not mistaken, it's what's written on his gravestone The song ends abruptly reflecting how Cliff's life ended as well.. which is, yes, emotional and beautiful, but really.. musically genious of a composition all over. awesome reaction. done lol !
3 year old video but i must say you couple are my favroite reactors on youtube, i love how you let the music guide your mind throughout the song and i can really tell your paying attention, overall i get excited when I see a video of your guys on my recommended reacting to a song i love, the reactions are so raw and so cool, keep making videos because music has become my life blood
you are one of the few who can really feel the music, it’s not just a react but a feeling. I don't know how to speak other languages, but music is the only thing that understanding is universal
This song contains the emotions of the band members since Cliff's death. First, anger, then acceptance, and grief, by the way, the second solo is not Kirk but James, James loved Cliff very much, to this day he remembers him at every concert. James tattooed with notes from the Orion song that Cliff wrote on his arm, I really love all of James' grief in this solo
My best instrumental by far from Metallica got reviewed - spin chilling and epic. I get goosebumps every time I listen to this. R.I.P. Cliff . Way song starts and finishes- beginning of life , end of life gets me every time.
Like Gojira would say : " So much said with no words at all , powerful presence for only speech....".people will prefere " nothing else matters" or even "One" but musicians will pick this one up as a master piece ...I know i do--- thank you guys for a great moment , takes some guts to react to stuff like that !!!!
This will always be my favorite. Metallica track. I would listen to this on repeat while sleeping when I was a teen. Ride the lightning And Justice for all will always be my All time favorite albums from Metallica. This song has so much power and passion. I still shed a tear when hearing it. Thanks for such a great Reaction! You both are Awesome!
Scott Johnson 2020 is truly the worst year. Wtf I didn’t even realize he passed away. I’ve been out of it ever since that hurricane came through my town last week.
And that´s how you hear/react/jam and then analyze/deconstruct the meaning of a timeless masterpiece! Both of you were very insightful and made very good points regarding the meaning of all the parts in the song. Loved it!
Never had music get me teary eyed but this song does also wish more reaction channels would re listen and talk over the song like you guys do only channel I’ve seen so that!
One of the greatest piece of metal history. Thank you both for reacting to it. (I have ...And Justice For All tatted on my forearm ahah) Love from France
Dylan! I hear you talking about how symphonic Metallica is, you guys need to react to S&M2 show! Oh boy, how beautiful is this concert! The songs, the visuals, the San Franscico Symphony... Simply Amazing! Blu-ray and CD just drop last friday. They already uploaded FIVE live performances of the show in their official youtube channel, you guys need to check one of them out!
Both of you need to react to Orion right now bro, the Cliff Burton masterpiece.... And please react to JINJER - Outlander (Respublica 2015) amazing live version, Tatiana was stunning.
The reason Lars's drums sound uniquely amazing is because he muted Jason's bass to take over more of the mix stage with it. It's also why this album's tone is so bleak (no bass, almost like a flag at half staff for Cliff). It was a dick move by Lars but ironically, that was what gave the album the unmistakable character that it has. It's dry, like a wasteland desert, without the bass, and its absence leaves a lot of room for the other members to properly cry and rage with massive tone throughout it.
You don't even have to react to this suggestion, but check out the cover of this song by sleepmakeswaves. Theiy're an Australian post-rock band but they are diehard Metallica tragics. So on the 30th anniversary of the justice album they got a studio in Sweden (I'm pretty sure) and recorded a live session. Personally I love it and I think they did a tasteful job. Great reaction as always!
IMHO they could've just called it quite after the black album. I don't really find anything groundbreaking in their new contributions. The voice is James but it's a mix of a Paul Gerhardt poem, one of Cliff's favourite quotes, with an addition of his own af the end. [When a man lies, he murders some part of the world. These are the pale deaths which men miscall their lives.(Gerhardt)] [All this I cannot bear to witness any longer. Cannot the Kingdom of Salvation take me home? (Burton)]
