And it did, I have a MetallicA tattoo. And you need some Mushroomhead in your playlist bro , you're missing out on a band that was in the big three and started a genre! Solitaire unraveling, the heresy, we are the Truth, Sun doesn't Rise. Pick one. Try something new , hop in this here rabbit hole MollyBoy. And say Hi to the goosebumps and hair standing up with every song, it's not like anything you know, love the vids brother, and I like your style in cars. Keeping the faith you'll follow that crazy rabbit
to be honest in my opinion the main riff is a bit too repetitive. it sounds great the first few times but after a while it gets annoying because of the lack of switch ups. more variety would have done this song justice.
That bass roar is EVERYTHING! My metalhead friends and I have had loads of fun over the years with this one. It's mostly not particularly difficult to play, and because of how it cycles, you can jam out to this for however long you want. A fantastic piece of metal history.
This was originally called "When Hell Freezes Over". Later the name of the song was changed at the initiative of the band's new bassist, Cliff Burton, and a guitar chord structure was added, written by Kirk Hammett, who was a big Lovecraft fan. The misspelling of "Cthulhu" is explained by the fact that, according to Lovecraft's works, mentioning Cthulhu's name (verbally or in writing) could summon him, so the band changed the name "in fear of the monster". (Copied from a fan)
Thanks for that one Molly. As someone who was self taught on guitar from metallica, you can appreciate the brilliance of what each riffs and tempo change means and feels like. Can't wait for more Metallica, remember there are a lot 🤟
this song is inspired by the short story “The Call of Cthulhu ” by American author H.P. Lovecraft. Cthulu is a water based beast or cosmetic entity but if you keep on repeating its name you wake and provoke it and it will rise and attack your city till it finds you the caller and kills you hence Metallica changed the name in the tittle of the song to Ktulu so the beast is not awaken. Listening to this masterpiece really you can feel the journey from waking up the beast as the music slowly builds up with suspence till when the beast reaches the city’s shores and the music starts to intensify as Cthulhu destroys the city and the music is just telling you how and discribing how magnificently raged the beast is. And when it destroys its target, the one who called its name and provoked it and woke it, then the beast calms retreats back to the water as it immerses its body into the horizon of the ocean the music calms and once the Cthulu fully disappers the waters go back to how it was before Cthulu woke and so does the music
And I'll go ahead and tell you right now, I've been listening to this since it was brand new, and the greatest thing about it is, you will NEVER get tired of listening to it, EVER! How many years have I been listening now? 40 years+? And I STILL listen to it regularly. It's just that fucking good. It really is.
As much as I love the original version, S&M is just something else. If you don't know yet, it's Metallica with the full San Francisco Symphony orchestra playing live. I loved the first one so much, I actually travelled to the US from London to see them do S&M 2.
The S&M version is epic and pretty. This one is mean and terrifying, mainly due to Cliff's unhinged performance; no version without him can ever top this.
Yea all those little mini solos you hear in the background and all that weird growling stuff, is all cliff burton on bass. The way the record was mixed, a lot of the amazing little things he’s doing throughout the whole track are really hard to hear because the guitars are so much more out in front but that’s all cliff. There’s a remastered version of the song where you can hear him better on all those little solos. He does some really wild stuff that I hadn’t noticed before. This song was definitely one of his babies. 🤘🏻
Don’t apologize for your journey, bro. It’s yours and we’re just along for the ride. Watching your reactions brings me back to the 80’s when I was starting my journey. Keep it up!
You are hearing new Metallica on RU-vid. When we were growing up as kids, we would go to a lucky mates place who had just acquired it on cassette, normally bought by their parents, or bought with hard earned pocket money. We would also borrow each other’s cassette, hoping our players would not chew the tape. Pull the pencil out when needed, to respool it. Awesome days, very fond memories. Mates in metal 🤘
Check this MollyBoy. These icons were kids younger than you are now, when they wrote this. Heavy Cliff influences throughout. May he rest in peace. Love the channel and genuine reactions.
This is my number 1 favourite Metallica song, seeing them perform it in its entirety live in Melbourne was completely unexpected and one of the highlights of my life. Killer video, man. 🤘
My favorite small detail about the first 3 albums is the bass that Cliff would throw in during the songs. You always know he had a great part of each song.
The fact you are young and not from the era of Metallica greatness, the fact that it moves is exactly why music is life. I’m 53 and could take you back to the moment I put the needle down on RTL. Hope you enjoy the lifetime of memories. From an old metal head 🤘🏻 ps, go see them before it’s too late! For real. 😳
one of my favorites from Metallica. the feeling that there's a summoning going on, that there is something responding, is just perfect. after so many years, i still get chickenskin when the summoning is complete and ktulu is here at 00:11:15 ...such great vivid composing.
Yes! That jammed! Haven’t heard it before but have also fallen for Metallica thanks to your reactions! I really only knew the radio hits. Wow… the instrumental tracks are some of the best. I felt that ending in my soul🤘🏻❤
The part you’re referencing in the beginning of the song and continues throughout the song is the late GREAT CLIFF BURTON on bass adding texture to the entire arrangement. R.I.P. Cliff
Sooo glad you liked this song so much. I prefer this original off of "Lightning" but, you should still check it out live off of S&M. I believe it's the 1st song with the San Fransisco Symphony. By the way, that subtle lead that you were hearing in the background is Cliff Burton on his bass guitar. He was a genius & a huge H.P. Lovecraft fan. He wrote this song
Molly, you’re a real one bud. Your journey into metal has been a joy for me. And judging by the other comments, I’m not alone. By the way, 7:51, I saw that look to your guitar. Getcha pull. 🤘
I've seen some people suggest listening to the s&m version. But if you do, listen to the s&m2 version. The background bass is much more audible in the second one.
Just FYI, Ktullu is a monster from H. P. Lovecraft novels that was so powerful it could kill you simply by you looking at it. Kirk Hamet was a huge horror novel fan. This is the last song that Dave Mustaine had any input on.
Big Priest and Maiden fan here (and Metallica and Megadeth eluded me for a while) and Metallica brings the heaviness and majestic crunchiness in a way no other band does!
Bruv... that solo part that you pointed out is in fact Cliff Burton going dumb running those distorted scales on bass guitar. Ride the Lightning is a legendary album. To think that these dudes were your age when they put this record together... That's how you end a fucking song... Amazing!
That tiny little guitar solo was all bass by Burton. Hearing you talk about reacting to “original metal” - I’m praying to the metal gods that you do some old school Black Sabbath, with Ozzy of course ❤️
the head nods at 12:00 paired with the ending makes me really feel the song. DEFINITELY check out this song live off the S and M album! The symphony adds so much to the song 🤠
I remember the I bought this album when it came out and I popped some acid and man cliffs bass kept tripping me out so I listened to this song over and over all night
i dont know how many times i listened to this song before i realized it didnt have any lyrics. Ride the Lightning is my all time favorite album and i use to listen to it on repeat during a whole shift of delivering pizzas.
Man, you nailed it. I must admit I never got the reaction thing at first. But that was until I came across your stuff. You look like me in 1988 when I first got into Metallica, lol. Liked and Sub'd.
A man gets into a small fishing boat and heads to sea to Disprove Ktulu. That he doesn't exist and all the fishermen are just crazy. As he sails out to sea looking for monsters, some times...Just Some times, they come looking for you. As Ktulu comes to the surface he brings a storm with him. He then chases the man back to shore where his boat crashes on to the rocks. The Man lays on the beach looking at the receding storm as Ktulu dives back into the depths of the sea. Then at the end the man rushes to tell people that Ktulu EXISTS !!!! and everyone looks at HIM likes He's Crazy.
I remember as a teen buying these when they were released. Metal was the shit and rarely played on TV or radio. About 1/3 of high-school students were into it.
Cliff Burton was a savage of the highest order. He was the genius behind the band and you can hear the difference after he departed. If you like instrumental metal there's a band Pelican you may like.
As a teenager I had a big skylight in my bedroom and one night during a wicked lightning storm I pushed my bed under it and listened to this song in the dark watching the storm, it was a surreal experience 🤘 BIRTH SCHOOL METALLICA DEATH \m/ 💀 \m/
RTL Was 1st Metallica I heard so therefore my favorite album, not a bad song on 1st 4 albums. I saw them on this tour FEB 15TH 1985 in a bar is STL metro, $10, cliff and all outstanding.. sucks we all got old..
This is not only the best Metallica instrumental, it might be their best piece alltogether. If Beethoven, Bach and Mozart (Whos names live on hundreds of years later) made music today, this could well be what they made. It is eternal, and brilliant. Really good reaction, but might I suggest you react to the same song twice? You see, in 1999 Metallica did a concert with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Michael Kamen (Who did soundtracks for Lethal Weapon and Die Hard, worked with Pink Floyd and much more), and they do play Call of Ktulu as the opening song. So you get a live performance, with a full bloody orchestra, bridging music to a timeless masterpiece. A pinnacle of music. It would be interesting to see you react to that.
"Orion" gets a lot of praise and attention (and it is really cool), but this has always been my favourite instrumental piece from these guys; you can't beat this record. A lot of the stuff you were hearing (and talking about) in the background was Cliff Burton...that "little solo" was him. Oh, and there is no such thing as Too Much Metallica 😊
Ayyyy glad to see more Ride. Trapped Under Ice should also be in your radar. Also good to hear the mixing is better lol. For some reason the music was so low on your other reactions.
The BEST way to listen to this song is full blast and eyes closed to feel it! This song has pulled me out of any funk I've ever been in. And is also my favorite instrumental song of all time!!
