that is because Brad is coming from a long way out. No disrespect but many (def not all) black men have been lied to so much through hip hop and rap culture music and the race haters that try to portray everything in terms of race and division between black and white and any other culture. It has affected him and he is with a bright shining little light (Lex), who is so obviously trying to lead him out of all that. She is very special.

I'd say the original video gives much more of the feeling "of the mindset you need to be in" with this one to get "their" meaning - a bit different than what the sound lets off... the vid helps set the frame if you will. That being said I only know this one from the video personally, so it was nice seeing the lyrics alone... thanks!

That's the problem, sometimes you need the lyrics, sometimes you need the video, sometimes you need the unedited version. Sometimes you need to just have the lyrics pulled up on another screen while trying to watch an unedited official video.

This song might hit harder in England because of the class system... being born into a "mold" and feeling like you can't change. I always thought there was an ambivalence in England over having both a strong sense of history and sense of belonging (which is linked to "knowing your place" in society). Americans aren't as class conscious. In fact, their whole history and culture seems to encourage social climbing.

Good point. If someone had asked me to pick a "Song of the 90s" I'd probably say "Smells Like Teen Spirit" but this has to be right there as well. And, maybe, even though they only came out like 6 years apart, they appealed to different generations. "Teen Spirit" was a definite Gen-X anthem, but this came out as early millennials (like myself) were becoming teenagers.

Old enough to really understand what went on after the cold war, how we refused humanitarian aid to russia and other countries, how the CIA imported literally tons of coke into the US and then ruined the career of the journalist who reported it. All while realizing the wage slave aspect.

The Verve asked Decca for the right to use this orchestral arrangement, it came from "The Last time" by the Stones, But Alan Klein sued, saying the Verve had used far more of the arrangement than was agreed, In 1997 they settled out of court, and the song was attributed to Jagger/Richards, in 2017 Jagger/Richards signed over the publishing rights back to The Verve

This is an anthem of sorts, unapologetically honest about the brevity and impermanence of life--and that even/especially when lived to the full it will contain both the bitter and the sweet. The classical music that pervades it gives it extra resonance. This is one of a relatively small group of songs for which I can name the exact time and place I first heard them. 🎼🎻💖💔

All of the way back to the Motown era, Roy Orbison, and then more famously by the Beatles and Electric Light Orchestra. U2 and Coldplay are modern masters of it. Lex, that riff is known as a hook. This is song writing 101. Just one good hook can make a song catchy and subconsciously command the attention of the listener. What I like about this song is how the vocal melody is riding the hook. I mentioned this before, when if come to instrumentation hooks, IMO you can't beat the song "How Soon is Now" by The Smith. The song is a masterpiece.

I enjoy the whole album, the band not only has great songs but has also gone on to other projects. Other songs off the album, Urban Hymns, worth checking out: “Lucky Man” & “The Drugs Don’t Work.” This song is pretty bittersweet in itself as they sampled the Rolling Stones whose lawyers left them with no earnings, so despite the songs fame all the cash was stolen by the Stones’ legal team. As of 2019, NPR has an update on the story, “After more than 20 years, the Rolling Stones and The Verve have resolved a sour dispute over the authorship of the song ‘Bitter Sweet Symphony.’ The Verve's frontman and co-founder, Richard Ashcroft, announced on Wednesday that the situation has finally been laid to rest.” Richard Ashcroft is probably better known for his solo work at this point, but I always think about the UNKLE songs he’s been featured on. Check out “Lonely Soul” by UNKLE ft. Richard Ashcroft (singer for The Verve.)

I'll never forget this song. In 2001 my Dad and myself were at the race at Daytona on February 18th. We would have my mom record the race so we could watch it again later. Daytona is 2.44 miles in a TRI Oval. There was 226.000 people at that race that Sunday. That was the race that Dale Earnhardt died hitting the wall in turn 4. When we watched it at home the opening song that the network played was The Verve bittersweet symphony. And talking about prophetic. The whole race was bittersweet. Dale died while blocking other competitors from potentially winning so his car that he co owned with his wife could win its first race driven by Michael Waltrip and his son Dale Jr. Could come in 2nd. Now how's that for bittersweet. Listening to this with you guy's brought back all those emotions of that day. My Dad and I went to Daytona for 10 years straight. We never went back after that Race. 🌴🌄🐊

The symphonic sound/sample to Bitter Sweet Symphony was taken from an orchestral arrangement recorded in 1965 by the Andrew Oldham Orchestra and their version of a Rolling Stone song called "The Last Time." The Verve were sued and lost because they took more than what was agreed upon from the sample. The Verve lost all of their royalties to the song in 1997; however, in 2019, the band worked out an agreement with the publishers while Mick Jagger and Keith Richards (Rolling Stones) released their songwriting credits to the song back to The Verve/Richard Ashcroft.

I have never seen a reaction to Jeff Wayne`s musical version of War of the Worlds. It`s a double cd, with some great songs, narrated by Richard Burton. It came out in 1977, and had a lot of stars on it. It`s my go to on a road trip if I know I`m not stopping for awhile. Even now it hasn`t dated, its timeless.

Just make sure it is the original. Nothing against Neeson but Burton's voice can't be beaten.

@@paulqueripel3493 I have only heard the original. I think remakes are normally not as good.

I don't know if it's been said already....It's not "I can't change" in the chorus, It's "I can change". Hence the "but I'm here in my mold"

You'd love Portishead live from Roseland NYC with a full orchestra. One of the best live performances ever IMO. Roads or Glory Box are the standout tracks for me ✌️

Hey Lex, that constant bass sound is called a Pad. It's like riding a note throughout the song.

The string section sampled in this song is from a symphonic version of a Rolling Stones song. Both the Stones and the symphony's record company sued The Verve and have been receiving all of the royalties from this song since it was released, until just recently.

When this first came out it didn't sound anything like a Verve song at all, yet it's pretty much the only song they are known for today. You should check out some of their early music to hear the drastic difference. Take your pick from "Slide Away", "Gravity Grave", "One Way To Go", "Star Sail", "Already There", "South Pacific (Live)", "Butterfly", "She's A Superstar" (full length version), "6 O'Clock", or "Beautiful Mind".

A brilliant song from a brilliant album (Urban Hyms) released in 1997. Takes me back to happier times when I was in my late 20s and the world was a much better place.
