1968 was a very turbulent year for The United States with Vietnam War protest, political assassinations of MLK and RFK and racial tensions on the rise, towards the end of that year Elvis came along with this wonder song, a powerful message of hope for better times to come.

I was only 9 when Elvis performed this song, even then I had a little girl crush on him. lol. He performed this during his 68 comeback special. His sponsors and manager wanted him to end that concert with a Christmas song but he fought strongly to end it with this song. Elvis grew up in poverty and in what you would call "a ghetto" and he knew of the struggles to survive. He had very strong believes in racial equality, he was known to love anyone no matter their race. During his HS years he sang in a Baptist Church choir. He was a very humble and generous person all his life. Such a sad loss to lose him so young. RIP Elvis

Elvis Presley's "IF I CAN DREAM" Is From his 68 Comeback Special, and It was Elvis' Heartfelt and Powerful Tribute to Dr Martin Luther King Jr, after his Assasination in Memphis Tennessee where Elvis Lived. It is Based on the message of MLK's "I Have A Dream" Speech, and was written for him with this in mind. It also honored the Memory of Robert F Kennedy, who was also Assasinated during the same time period. This was a Turbulent Time in America, 🇺🇸 with the Civil Rights Movement, Protests and Riots against Vietnam War and it seemed as if the Country was being torn apart and Elvis wanted to bring a Message of Hope and Unity to the Nation. "If I Can Dream" is at it's heart, a Civil Rights Song.

Elvis had this song written for him as the closing act of the ‘68 Comeback Special. It’s a tribute to RFK and MLK, who were both assassinated that year. It’s generally recognized as the best recorded live performance ever.

This was a tribute to civil rights leader MLK and Robert Kennedy who were killed that same year. He was a great humanitarian and advocate for black artists. He was born in 1935 during the depression and dirt poor. He was raised in a black neighborhood and went often to a black church. To see that he was more than a talented pretty face watch, "Elvis Presley, King of Kindness" and for early history in the 50's during segregation and his struggles watch, "Elvis Presley and the black Community" . You are a great reactor. Thanks and Be Blessed.

Elvis and the black community part 1 and 2. He was a true down to earth person. He sang this song about Dr King and the war and other things going on around him. He was the king blessed with a voice from heaven and his gospel songs prove it. In the ghetto was how he grew up. Never will be another like him.

This was for the assassinations of King & Robert Kennedy, also Vietnam. Elvis & producer-director Steve Binder had a long discussion about everything going on & Binder asked composer Walter Earl Brown to compose a song based on Elvis' feelings & everything that was going on @ time. The red tie represented the blood shed in Vietnam. I was around then -- the '60's was a strange decade -- turbulence combined w-hippies, free love, Woodstock, mini skirts, marijuana and LSD.

Watch last year's movie "Elvis.". You'll understand what the emotion behind the song. He'd just been told that despite being rich, he'd never have his dream of traveling the world doing concerts. He never left US, except army. Elvis was vilified when he started for being too "black.". He was generous, compassionate, religious, sang a lot of gospel. If you watch some of his older videos, you'll see his black roots of his music. Mean woman blues. Good movies of his:. Flaming Star, Charro,Wild in the Country

I watched this reaction again today and I love your description of it being both hopeful and broken all at the same time. There are some parts in this where he almost sounds like a wounded animal, and it turns out that in real life, he really was in a whole lot of emotional pain about all of it. It's so difficult to sing well when you get choked with emotion and this is about the closest I've ever seen anyone come to walking that tightrope so perfectly.

60-year-old white guy here but yeah I barely remember this as a kid watching it on TV but also remember that MLK got shot now before that. Now I remember my mom crying and my dad had tears in his eyes which is something I only ever saw one at a time which was the death of his father at the funeral. We watched the news reports on it little grainy black and white TV. Elvis was an admirer of Dr King and apparently his assassination and of course all the other shit going on at the time with the assassination of Bobby Kennedy and all the racial strife and of course the Vietnam War and just everything, it was so intense. Even from a little kid's perspective, the energy in the air and the shit I saw go down in my own neighborhood was just so intense. But anyway this is the finale of his televised Christmas special and they wanted him to sing a classic Christmas song, I'll Be Home for Christmas I think, but it's one of those, and he wasn't having any of it and so he had one of his favorite songwriters who knew him very well and knew how much MLK meant to him, right this specifically for him just in the course of a day or so I think, and as soon as Elvis saw it he said I'm doing this and of course his asshole manager was like no this is not the kind of music that Elvis does. They were like no way. And he put his foot down and said I'm doing it to end the show. And it is one of the most iconic performances ever I think. And to me almost at the end there that is almost the original mic drop moment. You can tell he was drained. And then he apparently went backstage and curled up in a ball and cried for hours.

The facts are after the show after Elvis stopped crying, he sai "he would never sing another song or act in another movie he didn't believe in. So he never sang this song again.
