James dad was actually dying from kidney disease & this was his tribute & farewell to his dad. Thankfully his dad received a donor kidney & is doing okay now. If this song doesn't get to you emotionally, there is something wrong with you. This song resonates with me as I was my dad's caregiver for 5 years until he passed away 4 years ago.

Both James and his father served in the British military and would tell each other when they deployed, I'm not your son, you're not my father, we're just two grown men saying good bye. James father was in stage 4 kidney failure when he wrote this song and recorded it and he was literally dying at the time. After the video was filmed, a distant cousin saw it and was tested (James' father had donated a kidney earlier in his life so he only had one remaining and it was failing) and they were a match and he then received the donor kidney and survived. His father had never heard the song until they recorded the video and in the typical stoic stiff upper lip British way, as James and the rest of the crew were crying as they filmed, his father looked at them all and said, why are you crying, I'm not dead yet? But what a poignant song to show how as we age, the roles reverse, and when we were children, parents read the bedtime stories and chased the monsters away, and when parents near the end of their lives, the roles reverse and the children are the ones to chase the monsters away and give their parents strength to face the unknown.

As someone who has lost pretty much every blood relative, parents, aunts, uncles, brothers, sister, cousins, nephews and a niece this song makes me cry every time I hear it. I wrote a song after my fathers death and a poem after my mothers to help me deal with their loss. James Blunt did an incredible job with this.

I heard James donated every penny of the proceeds to this remarkable song to the UK based charity 'Help For Heroes' who do so much wonderful work for and with ex-servicemen & women. As a former military man (as was his father too) this was a really lovely thing to do. God bless him. 🙋‍♂

He wrote this to his dad when he needed a kidney transplant. A long lost cousin was found after all the family and well everyone on the list were not a match. This is his dad in this and they really did come close to loosing him.

His father , like mine was suffering with stage 4 kidney “ failure” not cancer! You don’t get transplants for cancer! His kidneys were apparently only at 11% function , my father was at 14% , my dad passed in 2012 so I’m glad James still has his father “ daddy” . “ Monsters” makes me cry but doesn’t make me sad , because I made sure my dad knew I loved him before he passed, same with my mum whom passed in 2017 just 5yrs after my dad. I loved them both so much. This song just reminds me to still feel emotions for them even now they are gone! ❤

His dad had stage 4 cancer when he wrote this song and needed a kidney transplant but was having no luck finding one, but as I understand because of this song a donor was found and he is doing better now.

Not cancer, you don't have a kidney transplant for cancer, stage 4 kidney disease, both his kidneys were failing and his father was terminally ill, and there wasn't much hope. A relative came forward, was tested and a match, a live donor. 2 very tricky major operations. His father is still alive

The song didn't find a doner , the process of a distant cousin donating his kidney was in place before James wrote the song , the distant cousin had the name Charles Blount the same as James father Charles Blount . Also that line about I'm not your son you're not my father is just an internet thing , they never said that to each other .

Both Blunt and his father served in the military and when James's was sent to Kosovo it has been reported that when his father said goodbye, his dad said, "you are not my son and I am not your father, we are just two grown men saying goodbye ".

It is his father who was suffering with stage 4 kidney failure with a short time to live. Luckily with all the publicity after this song, a distant relation came forward to offer a kidney transplant and his father is now gaining his health.

Yes that's his dad there his dad and his dad had to get a new kidney and luckily his dad was able to get a new kidney and is still alive

if my memory serves me right, them finding the cousin's donor match happened in a matter of days after this song was released. Please correct me if I'm wrong. He had stage 4 kidney cancer so it really was a desperate situation. As far as I'm aware, his father is doing well and not only did James praise our great NHS but it also raised awareness of organ donation.

The line about fathers and son, just two men saying good bye has a personal heritage between the two of them. They were both military officers, and apparently they said to each other when either of them left for active service.

I think, it's not right to lead people into this song without any information of the actual situation going on. Was the hardest stuff for me to hear, altough my parents are still alive in their 80's.
