It's sad that you've only just found Jeff Beck, BUT on the plus side I'm envious of all the amazing music you're about to discover. As a guitarist, you're unlikely to be the same again! RIP Jeff ❤️

Dude , glad to stumble upon your JB reaction. You are not “stupid”. Loved ur initial response. You don’t know what I’d give to hear Jeff’s songs for the first time. Watch the whole concert. He does a rockabilly set during this show that will melt your brain.

You could pick any, and I mean ANY of his songs to react to from his live concert at Ronnie Scott's will blow you away! In the audience there was Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, Brian May just to mention a few... They were there for a reason., and that was to watch up close his masterful playinf and finger techniques. Neil from Sydney Australia R.I.P. Jeff.

'Scatterbrain' is from the 1975 album 'Blow by Blow'. Get that. And 'Wired'. Listen to 'Beck's Bolero', recorded in May '66 with Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, Keith Moon and Nicky Hopkins. Listen to Beck's first two albums in the late 60s, 'Truth' and 'Beck-Ola', both templates for heavy blues and hard(er) rock. In fact get EVERY Jeff album. And listen to the Yardbirds' Beck stuff - the singles 'Heart Full of Soul' and 'Evil Hearted You', his first two hits with the band, then 'Over Under Sideways Down', 'Shapes of Things' and 'Happenings 10 Years Time Ago' great songs where Jeff's playing introduced raga riffing, garage band distortion and psychedelia. Watch his performances on the Crossroads Festivals, most notably 2010, where he plays 'Hammerhead' and 'Nessun Dorma'. And see him joining Stevie Wonder for 'Superstition' - a tune Wonder penned for Beck - at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame anniversary gig at Madison Square Gardens. Watch 'What Mama Said' on the Letterman Show. All on RU-vid. Also check out the Beck, Bozzio & Hymas 'Guitar Shop' album plus any live clips you can find of that band. FEROCIOUS. BTW, all the major players are Beck fans. Joe Bonamassa's interest in guitar was ignited upon hearing Beck's 'Truth' and 'Beck-Ola' albums. Stevie Ray Vaughan learned 'Jeff's Boogie' as a kid (and there is a clip of them doing it on RU-vid). Satriani and Vai have guitar hero careers thanks to Beck's instrumental direction starting in the 70s. Jimi Hendrix, Billy Gibbons, Ritchie Blackmore, Martin Barre...everyone - even country players like Marty Stuart and Brad Paisley, and jazzers like the legendary Les Paul and John McLaughlin...anyone who is anyone bowed to Beck with the utmost reverence. Now dig this, 'Brush With the Blues' on the UK's 'Later...with Jools Holland' show. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hdTEmQJEgdQ.html

Always cool to see someone discover the Maestro. Good on ya. I think you’ll find there was no pick there, he uses the flesh part of his thumb as if it were. Happy to be corrected if anyone knows otherwise but I think that’s right. I’ve done that when I didn’t have a pick and regretted it severely. The hours it must have taken to get to that level is beyond comprehension. “A Day In The Life” and “Because We Are Ended As Lovers” from the same gig are equally impressive. ‘Course there’s 50 years of catalog so no shortage of awesome to be found. RIP

The album this song is off of is 1975's Blow By Blow. I bought this album new after it was released. The best version is the vinyl. The songs Airblower/ Scatterbrain are follow each other on the album and flow into each other. Jeff was the master of fusion jazz/rock. Frewway Jam is a good one off the same album. Rock radio station used to play this song during traffic reports. The next album wired is a great follow-up to this album. Jeff was using a Les Paul during this time before he switched to a Strat. Love his music. Check him out more.

That song “Scatter Brain” is from the album “Blow by Blow” which came out in 1975. Great album along with “Wired” which came out in 1976. Other Jeff Beck songs. In “Blow by Blow” - “Cause We’ve Ended as Lovers”, “Diamond Dust”, and “Freeway Jam” are good selections. From “Wired” - “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat”, which has an exceptional solo, not a bad note and each phrase leads into the next. These 2 albums contain some of the best guitar playing in music history. 😊

Just dive into Jeff's back catalogue at any point and you will come up with 100% pure gold. My personal favourites are "Rough and Ready" (The Jeff Beck Group), "Blow by Blow", and "Wired" but there are no duds. The whole "Live at Ronnie Scott's" DVD is superb - because you see his genius close up, thanks to some great camera work. I love your reaction to this as you obviously connect to the music on a deeply emotional level. If you like Jeff, you may also like Dutch genius Jan Akkerman - another unique and wonderfully musical guitarist. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6tBsF__4nek.html Take care, peace.

@neilmanns3098
@neilmanns3098 7 месяцев назад
Not quite true. Scatterbrain was created by a former band member of the Jeff Beck Group(version 2) Max Middleton. Jeff use to play this riff before his concerts when he was nervous and Max added some underlying chords to it which was to become "Scatterbrain".

Yep. He was the prototype for most of the coolest cats, lol. Everything prior to Blow By Blow ('74? 75?) was psychedelic rock, (Yardbirds) or Blues Rock (Jeff Beck Group). or Heavy Rock (Beck Bogert and Appice). or everything all at the same time.

What made Jeff Beck great is that he was always exploring new ideas. No two albums were the same nor were any two performances. He did albums because he had to but where he was best was on the stage. Fortunately, there are a lot of recorded performances and they are all worth looking at. Unfortunately, there's some material that only exists in album version. "Best guitarist" is a subjective label but it has been said that if you wanted to meet the best guitarists in the world, go to a Jeff Beck concert - they would be in the audience cheering him on. He has done rock, blues, classic rock, jazz, acid rock fusion, and styles that just have no name. It's not all great - no artist is. But name one other rock artist that would have the balls to do Nessun Dorma - one of the greatest opera arias of all time - at Crossroads Festival as his closing number just before Clapton comes on. Damn...

Howdy, fellow Iron Maiden fan here. You have 60 years of Jeff Beck to enjoy. He helped launch the psychedelic rock era in 65 with the Yardbirds’ Shapes of Things, which he then covered in the Jeff Beck Group in 68 with Rod Stewart, kicking off the heavy rock era just before Led Zeppelin. Check out the Truth album. One song, I Ain’t Superstitious, a Howlin Wolf song, was later covered by Megadeth. After a few other albums worth checking out, he went totally instrumental, and popularized rock fusion, which you just heard. Start with the album Blow by Blow. He continued to release good and great albums. One song suggestion: Big Block live at Crossroads. The song is off Guitar Shop.

This concert is a great intro to Jeff’s legacy. He hasn’t played with a pick for some time. Considering what he does with right hand, a pick was probably a hindrance to his technique. Since you’re wearing a maiden tshirt, it may interest you to know the drummer sat in on Megadeth’s “comeback”, The System Has Failed. Vinnie C.’s list of sessions is pretty impressive The quiet part at the end began the song, “Brush with the Blues” which is also pretty awesome. Just watch the whole show. Lol One last thing, there’s one point where his guitar sounds like a bird chirping and he only used a bottleneck over the pickups.

Jeff Beck started off as surprising in the early 60s with the Yardbyrds. Then went solo with the album Truth that blew everyone away, even Hendrix was in awe of him. But best of all, he kept improving his entire life and kept exploring new sounds. What an innovator! For more songs, try "Shapes Of Things" from his solo debut Truth, anything from the wild unhinged followup Beck-Ola, and his version of Superstition by Beck Bogert Appice. Then anything from Blow By Blow, Where Were You and Big Block from the album Guitar Shop, Nadia from this same concert, just to get a random sampling. He doesn't only do jazz fusion. Check out Shapes Of Things, not by the Yardbyrds, but his solo version.

Keep in mind that it's not just his guitar playing that's blowing your mind, it's his supporting musicians. Ever heard the saying "A band is only as good as its drummer"? Well that's Vinnie Colaiuta right there, one of the best drummers on the planet - seriously. And Tal on bass, even though young, is surpassed by few.

The sound of British rock in the 60's was massively influenced by Beck. He didn't just copy other rockers. He invented all new sounds. His time in the Yardbirds opened the door for his buddy Jimmy Page to start Led Zeppelin. Playing with Jeff was like a master class guitar lesson.

I grew up listening to Jeff from the mid 70s. I used to have most of his albums. I have seen him live twice, first time was Blow byBlow tour which is the album that included Scatterbrain. He stopped playing with a pic back in the early 80s. He is the best of the best. Unequalled and impossible to duplicate. His right hand was pure magic. Even EC said so. Congrats on finding Jeff Beck. If you want some rock, listen to the Yardbirds (Train Kept a Rollin, I’m A Man, etc.) and the Jeff Beck Group Truth album. Ted Nugent thought Truth was his best. I think Live at Ronnie Scotts was his best.

Go watch Jeff Beck - Still On the Run. Kind of a documentary with interviews of his musical colleagues. Every one of the legends were in awe of Jeff. Clapton, David Gilmour, Jimmy Page and more, plus performances. Jimmy and Jeff were close as teenagers and throughout life. His technique is his own. He's been experimenting since he started. I saw Jeff three times and each time I knew I was witnessing greatness. Now go listen to Truth.

I've enjoyed watching a mind blown in real time. :) You're correct about the pick at the start - he rebuilt his entire style to fingerpicking in... the early 80s, I think, but the fast section of Scatterbrain is the only part of his older repertoire that still needs a plectrum, which he drops immediately. For a completely different side, I recommend Cause We've Ended As Lovers from the same concert (or anywhere else), or Nadia, covering an Indian vocal line on guitar. For his early stuff, I've seen good lists elsewhere in the comments. I can say that there are no duds - dive in wherever appeals to you and I expect you'll enjoy it.

Mr. Guitarist...There are only two things a guitarist can do after hearing-seeing Jeff play... You could throw away your game console and practice every free moment you have, or you could put your guitar in the closet and wind up working in a gas station. Some guitarists might switch to bass but if you focus on Tal's playing it will rule that out also. (There is some great footage of Tal from this show). Wish you well on whatever your decision is but you do have a decision to make? There is a 3rd choice you could just be a guitar player not a top guitarist and just play for your enjoyment.

If you want me to be brutally honest, but maybe stereotyping; I think you may have been listening to classical music without the class,. That can be take two different ways. I am just an old fart, 71, who has played for 60 years, maybe above average, I love classical music, and I like Metal. You will very rarely if ever hear these type of chords or progressions in classical music. Welcome to new horizons. You have discovered the "Master of the Stratocaster". Now you have to do some follow ups on Jeff? I have seen this reaction on many a young guitarist on hearing him for the first time. I enjoyed your presentation and a thumbs up.
