The Ronnie Scott's performance is one of the highlights of Beck's career, it's such an incredible show and it's wonderful that they were able to get it all on film. Beck's technique is fascinating to watch throughout the film; not only does he fingerpick, as you noted, but he almost exclusively uses his thumb, which I think is interesting, and as you saw he makes extensive use of the tremolo arm, not only for its regular effect (which as I understand it is vibrato (change in pitch) and not actually tremolo (change in volume)), but also to pick out specific notes without needing to fret them, which I think is fascinating.

My wife and I saw Jeff in concert in Charlotte a few years ago. It was the first time I ever saw her cry because of how beautiful his playing was. Same guitar the whole show almost, and few effects pedals. I felt a bit sorry for Paul Rodgers band who had to follow him. They were quite good, but Jeff Beck is on a whole other level that few others occupy!

Did you notice Jimmy Page in the audience as well? Awesome cover. It is interesting that Beck took the platform of rock superstar guitarist and blazed his own trail on albums like Blow By Blow by defining a new jazz/rock fusion IMO. By going to an instrumentally based solo career he bucked the mainstream but his material was so good and undeniable that he sold it in levels I'm sure nobody could have expected. He was a guy who didn't need the spotlight and radio airplay to be commercially successful and to that end he truly proved just how good he was. My favorite track of his (besides the Yardbirds hits Shapes Of Things and Over Under Sideways Down) was Cause We've Ended As Lovers on Blow By Blow. Review it for a good listen.

JB was Roger Water's guitarist for the "Amused to Death" album. The title song was release as a single with video featuring Beck. It's a pretty accessible song also for solo Waters. Of course I think the whole album is genius. But, it's definitely a good place to start... Note It is conceptual and should be played from the beginning Intro song into Amused to Death. It's based on a book "Amused to Death" and if I recall you can hear HAL from 2001 A Space Odyssey in the background somewhere. Beck's a beast. Great reaction, Thanks!!!

I love Jeff's guitar playing, his albums "Wired" & "Blow by Blow" are superb. He showed promise in early bands like the Yardbirds, on the B side of their 45,s are two good examples, one called "Steeled Blues" the other "Jeff's Boogie" which is great. Also on the B side of his own Pop Hit Hi Ho Silver Lining, worth seeing for a laugh, is a tune called "Beck's Bolero" which has some excellent "Speaking Guitar" parts

Ah, back to JB. My absolute favorite, thanks for coming back to him. Anything from this set is excellent, anytime you're willing to listen to live instead of studio versions. Jeff is technically excellent in studio, but playing live he brings out that something extra, the tone that captures the moment more than the perfect note, the microadjustments with the band to make things pop.

I agree that this is a cover as it should be. His use of the whammy bar is so unique combined with his unique picking style what enables him to play the Strat in a very special way. 10/10 At this point I cannot help to mention Vanilla Fudge again because of their art of covering because they always come to my mind when covers are the topic. Their cover of "Eleanor Rigby" is one of their brillant works what put covering on an unheard level in popular music.

You're not allowed to get real animated at Ronnie Scott's. Jeff Beck is the master of vibrato and the whammy bar. The song they do after that is, if I'm not mistaken, " You need Lovin " a small faces tune, (which Zeppelin ripped into Whole Lotta Love) which is really funny being as both Plant and Jimmy Page are in the audience.🤠🤠

From the same show, see a demonstration of how he plays melodies by manipulating harmonics with the whammy bar on "Where Were You". They showed Jimmy Page in the audience. 3 former Yardbirds in the building. He developed his pickless style years ago. For an earlier example of his melodicism, see his cover of jazz bassist Charlie Mingus' "Goodbye Porkpie Hat" on the Wired album. For something else from this venue, see his solo behind guest vocalist Imogen Heap on the song "Blanket". Beck is also prominent on the Roger Waters album Amused To Death.

There were some rock royalty at this (these?) show(s). You caught a glimpse of Jeff's life-long friend Jimmy Page at the end if you were alert for it. I think Robert Plant was there, as well as Brian May of Queen. This soundtrack is by far the closest musical connection I have with my 23 yo daughter. I used to play it in the car taking her to school, and now "Nadia" and several other Jeff tunes are on her playlist. "Nadia" is her go-to song when she's having a bad day.

The first time I saw a guitar rendition of ADITL was in the movie "Across The Universe" late 2000's. The movie is based on Beatles Songs. I had just started leaning to play guitar at the time and looked up the song and to my surprised the rendition in the movies was based on Beck's version. After butchering the song back then, I think I'll give it another go. Across the Universe would be a good move to review on your channel btw.

Love Jeff's playing - so innovative, colourful and exciting - and, yes, it's a good cover - but I still prefer the original (as it's one of the Fab Four's greatest ever). A "jazz standard type cover". Take the old song everyone loves, and go for a walk through the fields or the stars or the sewers with it. To my mind a cover like that makes a new song from the old (a kind of child of that song) instead of a clone. There's a place in this world for great cloned covers, but this kind of cover says the original isn't just a great song, but is also the potential seed of other things not yet imagined. Here's a "clone" cover I like (and lots of people hate - because some people are always going to hate it if you don't do it "exactly right" - according to the production team at the canonical recording). It's by *Yellow Matter Custard* (pretty much a supergroup) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OWliruQZ9Bk.html

Didn’t he win a Grammy for this song? Have to be honest, I’m not in love with Jeff’s whammy bar pretty much, All The Time, way of playing now. This is something he morphed into late in his career. It’s just a bit too much for me. At the moment, my whammy is off of my strat… I still love Jeff very much, in fact, if it were up to me, Wired would be a subscription goal album. Glad it wasn’t a Christmas tune, just needed a break. On to make toys for Xmas… Peace and dinner club Music

Quite the same opinion on Jeff Beck's whammy bar ! He's been putting on too much for a few years, it has become recurrent to the point of becoming a gimmick. This was already starting to be the case at the time of the Guitar Shop album with Tony Hymas and Terry Bozzio but even more since the 90s until today. I prefer his guitar playing in the 60s until the very early 80s and I agree, Wired is the way to go !!!

Not his best performance. A largely subdued, and disjointed rendering of a not particularly good song. I'd rather he was doing his own stuff. @@jfergs.3302 I can understand where you're coming from. My favorite band is Yes. The music that thrills me most is prog. So, I suggest that if you want to try some more Beatles with the hopes that you'll find it cool, that you set aside 50 minutes and listen to Abbey Road straight through. I find it to be dramatic like Yes, and with catchy tunes - "good music". If you listen to it in digital, rather than flipping a vinyl record over, the transition from "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" into "Here Comes the Sun" is so very dramatic and just thrills me to no end. Again, I strongly suggest that you listen to the whole album in one session. And the medley of songs in the latter half where the tracks just segue into each other feels quite proggy to me. Another thing I suggest is that you don't look to it to rock you as hard as the 4 bands you mention above, but these songs are, undoubtedly, very good songs, deserving respect even if they don't grab you very strongly.

Rather a misinterpretation. The approach of interpreting this Beatles classic instrumentally doesn't work, this version is not particularly interesting. It's boring. It has no aura. But actually one can only fail in an interpretation of one of the greatest classics of modern popular culture.
