The song is an old folk song that probably dates to the 18th century. The earliest recording was in the 1930s, and the best known version before this was by the great bluesman Leadbelly. In fact, Ram Jam thought Leadbelly wrote it. Guitarist Bill Bartlett originally recorded the song with his previous band, Starstruck, in 1973, and the resulting single was released locally in Cincinnati. After Starstruck disbanded, Bartlett was contacted by the producers of a 1969 hit by his even earlier band, the Lemon Pipers, who asked him to come to New York and organize a band around the Black Betty record. They remixed the Starstruck master and released it in 1977. The version in this video is actually shorter than the version that appeared on the Ram Jam album, which had a longer instrumental break. This was Ram Jam's only hit. They made two albums. What I've heard other than this was decent but not spectacular blues rock.

This is about the fourth adaptation of a "chain gang" working song that goes back at least 150 years...and it's a real banger! Ram Jam made this in the back yard of a family members house at the phenominal cost of...a couple of cases of beer! Ram Jam told their manager they wanted to cut a demo, so the manager gave them $400 to cut the demo, and Ram Jam spent the money on Weed and Beer and recorded this, in the drummers backyard !!

Black Betty actually refers to what a particular musket was commonly called and it is NOT about a black lady The "child" is its replacement and "bam A lam" is the sound of its firing. The song even calls black Betty a " thing and not a person.
