Humpty Dumpty was first described as being an egg in Lewis Carroll's Alice Through the Looking Glass (The follow-up to Alice in Wonderland). He was an English author. Hans Christian Andersen, who also wrote many nursery rhymes, was Danish (also a kingdom). Before that, Humpty Dumpty was the name given to a cannon used in the English Civil War which was stationed on a wall in Colchester to prevent the Parliamentary Army from taking the city, but the Parliamentary Army's own forces damaged the walls enough with their own artillery that Humpty Dumpty had a great fall in 1648 and could not be put back together again. Others suggest that King Charles the first, who was king at that time, was the iconic Humpty Dumpty as he was in a high place (king), was toppled, lost his head (via eggs-ecution 🤣) , and could not be put back together again.

Thank you for an expanded explaination. Not knowing the former and an adherent to the latter, I appreciate the insight. As a Ricky Gervais fan I've seen this bit before. But what I find intriguing is that Gervais, who is an Atheist, uses these nursery rhymes as examples of critical thinking, how people recite and repeat the same bullshit believing they have the right take and exclude others for not believing their way, referring to religion.

Karl Pilkington is ESSENTIAL alongside watching Ricky Gervais. Karl was the star of a show called "An Idiot Abroad" in which Ricky and Stephen Merchant send Karl by himself (and a couple camera guys) on trips around the world to see the 7 wonders of the world, and experience different cultures to help expand his mind and broaden his horizons, knowing full well that he would hate it. They also had another show (radio I think..) "The Ricky Gervais Show", with the three of them which also focuses quite a bit on Karl. These 2 programs are my favorite things these men have been involved in by far!

Like everyone has already mentioned. You might enjoy - Learning English with Ricky Gervais and Karl Pilkington. That is probably a good introduction to Karl without delving into the countless radio episodes. I know you don't watch shows and movies on here, but An Idiot Abroad is so funny. That is a show where Ricky and Stephen send Karl all over the World as a prank to wind him up. For context, Karl is very stuck in his ways, so naturally a World trip to him isn't as exciting as it would be for you and I, plus let's just say that Ricky and Stephen don't exactly make his trips comfortable.

Swingball is a tennis-inspired game involving a tethered tennis ball attached to the top of a pole driven into the ground. The ball travels round the pole in a circle, until the tether reaches the top or bottom of a spring mounted at the top of the pole, at that time one or other player has won by getting a number (usually around 5 or 6) shots past their opponent.

Not exactly a Humpback or Hunchback. Analysis of his skeleton only found in 2012, shows he did have Scoliosis which is actually a curvature of the spine or sideways twisting, not a hunch or hump. Shakespeare was wrong. There is also the other explanation that Humpty Dumpty refers to a cannon in the Civil War (later than Richard III) but as the earliest written record doesn't occur before 1797, it is now impossible to be certain who or what it refers to. When I was at school, the cannon in the Civil War was the prevalent theory

Humpty Dumpty is actually about a Canon that at on a Castle wall. I have no clue why ppl think its a egg or who the first person to depict Humpty Dumpty as an egg, but its a Canon. It fired off a shot and the recoil from the blast made it have a great fall, all the king's horse and men couldn't fix the canon and get it back on top of the wall.

Yah, "Quid" as slang for the british pound currency is believed to come from the latin "Quid pro quo", meaning "something for something', like as in "OK, I did you a favor now you owe me, quid pro quo". So, yeah, "quid" is like "buck". A "buck" has several meanings (like a male animal of several species, deer and such, for example, a "buck" is a male deer), so "buck" as slang for a dollar may come from "buckskin", being something that was traded in history.

Bloke is a slang term for a common man in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. For some strange reason, it never really caught on in Canada, which when you consider the connection Canada once had with Britain may seem odd to many. Another British slang for "bloke" is the word "chap". After the war, both of these terms were slowly replaced by the American vernacular "guy" or "guys"....although in some cases the older terms are used on occasion. Quid is a slang term believed to have originated from the Gaelic term "mo chuid" or cuid, pronounced "quid"...which means "my money".

Humpty Dumpty tells the tale of a French cannon that looked similar to an egg with a bulbous end. It was mounted onto a wall and was a formidable weapon that the British wan't to destroy but it was so strong that direct hits didn't take it out. So instead the British struck the wall below it to collapse the wall it was setting on hoping it would break the egg. It did but not completely. The issue came when horses were used to try to tow this super heavy cannon from the rubble. This action caused a bit of the wall to ever so slightly puncture one of the oldest wounds--for lack of better terms--from the British shells. They decided to set the cannon up in place and try to use it to finish the battle. They managed to use the cannon enough times that the British became demoralized having thought they destroyed their massive cannon only for them to pull it quickly out of the rubble and continue firing. The last shot of the cannon was ceremonial to celebrate its victory and was strong enough to destroy the cannon which was melted down into musket balls. Many of those musket balls were etched with crosses to help take the cannons tenacity to bare with the bullets it later became. The act of crossing bullets is still used today as the crossed musket balls preformed better than non crossed ones. Today hollow points are a direct descendant of the legacy of Humpty Dumpty the egg shaped cannon that sat on a wall only to suffer a great fall.

"Quid" is British slang for Pounds (£). It's Latin for "This" and comes from the Latin term "Quid pro quo" ("this for that" - meaning an exchange). Another Latin term in common usage is when referring to a football (soccer) score line. When one team has yet to score a goal, we use the word "Nil" (meaning "nothing") rather than zero. So, if a team loses 2-0, we would call that a "2 Nil defeat/win"

You would then use small tennis racket shaped bats to hit the ball back and forth to an opponent, so that the ball would swing on the rope and spin around either side of the pole to each player to hit back and forth. Karl's logic being that there was no running involved like in tennis, so someone in a wheelchair could still play it while basically being stationary.

As someone from the UK, just to confirm: "A quid" = 1 pound in British money, as you said similar to saying "a few bucks" = dollars. A "bloke" is simply a man, a guy. Like you would say "I was talking to this bloke the other day". From my experience it's more English than anything else (I'm from Wales and don't seem to hear that term as much) The tall guy you're thinking of is Stephen Merchant who co wrote The Office and Extras with Ricky Gervais. Karl Pilkington has shows with the 2 of them including An Idiot Abroad and he does talk like that 😂 Love your reactions, and Ricky Gervais is honestly one of my favourite people 😂

1.A quid is a Pound 'Sterling' and is supposed to be roughly equal One $US. 2.Humpty Dumptey as myth would have it, was King Richard The Third who lost a war (Bosworth Field) and was killed. - 3. Most Nursery Rhymes are based on true historical happenings and were probably invented in the dark days before electricity when people 'demonstrated' their feelings by telling stories which were purposely changed so the authorities didn't find out because they were scared they'd have their head chopped off. [I'm Australian and enjoy your reaction video. thanks again.]

It looks like the story of Humpty Dumpty, is of Richard III's death. Richard III was not popular and he fell in battle. When he died he left his house, the Plantagenet's who had ruled the English since 1154, with no clear or assumable heir. So he was the last Plantagenet. The house was completely broken and in ruin -- and could not be repaired enough to continue-- in August 1485, when Richard III faced Henry Tudor (who later became King Henry VII) at the Battle of Bosworth Field. Richard was killed in the battle, and Henry Tudor emerged victorious, becoming the first king of the Tudor dynasty. Richard's body was later buried in the Greyfriars Church in Leicester, and his remains were rediscovered in 2012 Examination of his body lead to the confirmation that he was a "humpback". Deformed. Humpty dumpty sat on a wall -- Not a cannon because cannons didn't sit on walls until the 1500s -- Humpty dumpty had a great fall -- broke his house to little pieces -- All the King's horses (Knights, if you had a horse you were a Knight, in fact the Knight on the Chess board is a horse) and all of his men (in the battle, but also the remains of his family) -- could not put Humpty together again -- nothing in his remaining house survived him. Where does the "broken egg" come in? Well, on the other side of the Battle of Bosworth Field, there was a legend that spread through the Tudor camps. According to the legend, the night before the Battle of Bosworth Field, the future King Henry VII was staying at an inn near the battlefield. During the night, he was served a boiled egg for his supper. As he was about to eat the egg, he noticed that the pattern of the cracked eggshells resembled a crown. He took this as a good omen and interpreted it as a sign that he would be victorious in the upcoming battle. The next day, Henry VII led his forces to victory over King Richard III, and he went on to become the first Tudor monarch of England. The story of the egg became part of the folklore surrounding the battle and is still remembered today as an example of the role that superstition and symbolism can play in historical events. Richard's Crown/egg was broken during the great fall. There is a correlation between a wall and the Battle of Bosworth Field, as the battle took place near a stone wall that is now known as "The Wall of the Langton." The Wall of the Langton was a boundary wall that marked the northern edge of the battlefield, and it played a significant role in the outcome of the battle. King Richard III, who was leading the Yorkist forces, chose to position his troops behind the wall in an effort to gain a strategic advantage. However, this position proved to be a tactical mistake, as it left Richard's army vulnerable to attack from the flanks. During the battle, Henry Tudor's forces, which included a contingent of French archers, were able to outflank and overwhelm the Yorkist army, ultimately leading to Richard III's defeat and death. The Wall of the Langton is now recognized as a historical landmark and a key site in the history of the Battle of Bosworth Field.

If you think Jack and Jill are crazy, don't read about Round the Rosie. Ring-a-Ring-a-Roses is all about the Great Plague; the apparent whimsy being a foil for one of London’s most atavistic dreads (thanks to the Black Death). The fatalism of the rhyme is brutal: the roses are a euphemism for deadly rashes, the posies a supposed preventative measure; the a-tishoos pertain to sneezing symptoms, and the implication of everyone falling down is, well, death.

British pound sterling, sometimes known as the British pound (GBP), is the official currency of the United Kingdom (U.K.). It is commonly accepted that the Latin phrase "quid pro quo," which means "something for something" or an equal trade for goods or services, is the source of the 100-pence unit known as a quid.

I think the moral of Humpty Dumpty is: If you're not a very strong person with a strong enough position to defend yourself (if you're an egg) you shouldn't try to stand aloof and neutral in the face of two opposing sides (sitting high on a wall between them). Because both side will hate you. You will ultimately be forced to seek assistance from one side to defend against attacks from the other but the side you seek also hates you so will still be harmed by them or killed. (like falling on one side of the wall). Sitting on the wall is like burning both bridges leaving you with no safe way out. If you pick a side then you have a group to support and defend you.

There's a great video on the dark history of nursery rhymes, some shockers, King Richard died in battle, he rode a horse called "WALL" pulled off it and by time his men got to him he was well dead, hence humpty dumpty, egg is reference to how easy we as humans break, Jack and Jill is supposed to be about King Louis and Marie Antoinette, Louis beheaded 1st and a king hence Jack's crown and Jill's came tumbling after 28 quid is slang for ££ pounds Something you say is a measurement haha You right with "Bloke" it is a guy, a man yeah

Humpty Dumpty was a cannon used in the English Civil War. It was mounted to a tower wall at St. Mary's Church. After 10 weeks of battle, the tower was hit with enough cannon fire that Humpty Dumpty eventually became dislodged and tumbled over the city walls. The King's horses and King's men later attempted to retrieve the canon from the bog it landed in, but failed in their attempts to raise it.

Just as "Yankee Doodle" was an English mocking of American military, "Humpty Dumpty" was a mocking political tale in 15th century England -- has something to do with King Richard being overthrown or his death, I think.
