The leaders that want wars should fight each other in duels. I lost a grandfather and 3 uncles all for 6 miles of land. I still live in Lancashire and we do remember their names💔💔

A powerful and moving piece of art. "1916" was written by Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead after he had watched a documentary on the Battle of the Somme. He was deeply moved by an interview with a veteran of the battle who described holding his best friend as he died and broke down in tears talking about it, which forms the theme of the song. The Motorhead version is very striped back, with only a marching drum and cello. Sabaton made it more epic and included soldiers from other eras but retained the impact of the lyrics. This video is a fitting tribute to both Lemmy and the soldiers throughout history who marched off to fight and sometimes die for their homeland. RIP, you are all missed and appreciated. Kudos to Sabaton for including the surviving members of Motorhead in the video.

It's fascinating how they transform the core message of each event into a short song and video. And I like the way you comment on it.

I have watched this video many times, and it gets me, every single time. It seems that every generation is fated to lose some of their finest to war. Too much, it's too much.

I honestly like everything they do because all that they sing about is true. They don't take sides, just sing. Watch Bismarck and everything they do.

I think you have started to understand why so many like and respect Sabaton, they bring tears to people's eyes and they tell great stories about war and the sacrifice soldiers make, sure there are plenty of heroics but also songs that make you think, like this one, three other come to mind, official music video of "to hell and back" (lyrics video does not give same impact to the message) , "En livstid I krig" especially the live performance from Göteborg Sweden (in Swedish, but there are subtitles) and The animated STORY video of "no bullets fly".

If you want to hear a Sabaton song with a nicer ending, I recommend "No bullets fly", the animated version, so you get the real story behind it. It has to be the animated version. Sabaton is a rabbit hole that is hard not to fall into. I'm not even fond of metal myself, but Sabaton is like a phenomenon unlike anything else.

They still finding soldiers from both sides at the Somme, they are brought home when able to identify. People we know were there also, one being J.R.R tolkien, professor and writer of Lord of the rings. He got the scenes of the swamp of fallen soldiers in his books - from his experiences in that war... That fight, was horrific and never should be repeated again. thank you for your reaction.

This song hits to many who uncles and grandfathers fought in WW1 - my great-uncle was enlisted at 16 and fought at the Somme which he survived, to die 8 days before the end of WW1 RIP corporal Frank Lunn never forgotten!!

This song will break your heart if you have one. The fact that it was written by Lemmy of Motorhead, one of the biggest reprobates ever in metal, makes me respect him even more, and Sabaton for reminding us. You really do get it. Thanks. This was a cover of a song by Motorhead. The American equivalent was D-day, but not nearly as many men and boys were lost. Sabaton is truly amazing as well. Inspirational, yet devastating. Thank you for your review, and may God protect us all. I know war is heck, but there are freed slaves, murdered civilians, and destroyed lives. which makes it REALLY hard. As long as there are people out there who take stuff that's not theirs, someone has to stop it, or we surrender to delousing.

For this song none of the lyrics are Sabatons. They are all Lemmy Kilmisters and Motörheads. 7:56, the two still living members of Motörhead, Phil Campbell and Swedish drummer Mikey Dee, after that drummer in Scorpions. 8:05 The guy holding Lemmys photo is Sabatons tour manager Eddie Rocha that used to be Motörheads tour manager. All the different soldiers are references to other Sabaton songs.

I did some researching and found that all the names of the soldiers, knights and Spartans in the end were real people. Many of the soldiers were Medal of Honor, Silver Star, Victoria Cross or Croix de Guerre recipients. The soldier pulling himself out of the mud, at first I thought he was a member of "The Smoking Snakes" (Força Expedicionária Brasileira, FEB, nicknamed Cobras Fumantes), but doing some more research with the patch on his shoulder as well as his helmet, that's Sgt Henry Johnson of the 15th New York National Guard Regiment, aka "The Harlem Hellfighters". Medal of Honor recipient and recipient of French Croix de Guerre avec Palme, France's highest award for valor. The Medal of Honor was awarded to him in 2015. Sgt. Henry Johnson is "one of the five bravest American soldiers in the war." Theodore Roosevelt Jr. in his book "Rank and File: True Stories of the Great War" The Asian soldier with the cocked-hat, that's a Nepalese Gurka named Havildar Gurung (per the credits) who earn the Victoria Cross in the Burma campaign off WWII. Sgt Awal Nur, who did a secret mission over the Himalaya. Lt. Audie Murphy, Sgt. Alvin York are both medal of honor recipients from WWI (York) and WWII (Murphy). I also notice a soldier with the Croix Lorraine on what looks like a French flag arm band, meaning he was a member of the 'Forces françaises libres' forces in WWII. Doing some reading I found out that a large number of French colonial troops from territories such as Chad had joined with the 'Forces françaises libres'. I suspect that soldier is Lt Comba, but I can't find anything on him. As I've been working my way through the names listed in the credits and found another one: Private George Stringer, Manchester, Awarded the Victoria Cross at the Battle of Es Sinn in Mesopotamia. Capt. Dobson, 1st Canadian Infantry Battalion, Killed on 9 July 1916 in Flanders.

nothing is worse than a war... Except losing a war. Unfortunately war is in the human condition, whether with sixth generation planes or stones and sticks there will always be conflicts, therefore the only solution is to be prepared for that conflict, that acts as a deterrent or if necessary to win. (I've seen what happens to people from losing countries... You don't want that for your children) "Only the dead have witnessed the end of the war" ...Plato ............. Is so sad.

Also the original Motorhead version is worth a listen. Just as powerful and maybe more heartwrenching

My only problem with Sabaton is that these videos, these songs are so difficult to watch, to hear that they're not something I play over and over. They are too powerful for that.

Sabaton and similar bands help educate, especially the younger on events like these. So they are not only giving us good music but help us remember the fallen. And most important. Sabaton doesn’t pick sides, tells the history as it is.

Lest we forget, the Somme is deemed one of the bloodiest battles. The German side alone lost 500k men, and the British were very close to that number as well. This battle was intended to relieve pressure on the French troops at Verdun, which was another bloody battle. They threw men at the front lines, making it even worse. What makes it even more tragic is that many soldiers suffered from shell shock, commonly known as PTSD today. When these soldiers wouldn't go over the top, they were deemed cowards. Just over 100 British soldiers were put up against the pole and shot by their own command. The French, Belgians, and Russians did the same, but with higher numbers. Even during World War II, the Russians practiced this and were taught never to retreat or surrender. They feared their own command more than they feared the Germans.

6 miles that were lost with in 4 months in a counter offensive, the battle of the Somme was one giant epic waste that gained nothing other than it was a different waste than the concurrent battle at Pachendael which was just as bloody. IRON Maiden s song Passendael, and Sabatons songs Price of a Mile, Great War, Verdun, cover Passendaell and Verdun battle field.

Hey, this is only the 2nd time I have watched this and it still punches me in the head! Sabaton is one of the only bands that make me cry. Love your reaction to this song. I had a great grandad go to WW1 at the age of 14 (yes he did fudge his age a bit) but I was lucky he came home to New Zealand at the end of the war.

This is actually a Motorhead song, but Sabaton did a great job with it 🤘

Wow all I can say is wow

The realy sad part is this was one battle in a 4 year meatgrinder . only to repeat it self 20 years later European wars dont count the number of people killed its the percentages of the population that is left. over 2000 years of nonstop conflict . with almost destroying our self Europe had enough of war and one of the major reasons the EU exist today . And a major reason why europe is hessitent to get involved in to wars . As if we awaking the slumbering god of war , it will be the end of the world as we know it .

Great video. some other great Sabaton videos are the animated story videos of No Bullets Fly, Christmas Truce, Night Witches, Lady of the Dark. Sabaton's song The Price of a Mile specifically talks about the 6 miles of ground that cost roughly 300,000 lives.

6 miles. 300k. 50,000 per mile. What a difference American dominance has made. We haven’t seen real wars since when? WW2? Korean War? Maybe Vietnam? American commitment, make war so overwhelmingly costly that peace and fair trade is always the preferable option.

Millions of horses served in the First World War. John Keegan, professor of military history at Sandhurst (British West Point) stated for every 3 soldiers, 1 horse served in WW1. That's 20 million horses in both Western and Eastern fronts. Men would do anything just to take care of the horses. That duty connected men to their humanity. ‐----- Sabaton " The Lost Battalion" is the true story of the American 77th Division in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive of 1918. The 77th was saved by a pigeon who was also wounded. 7 men of the Lost Battalion received the Medal of Honor diuring those 4 days. 500 solders walked into the Aargone Forest and only 194 kinda walked out. Give the Sabaton The Lost Battalion a listen it'll.......

This is the evil of humanity: youth is wasting their lives on wars waged by old, stupid men. There is no glory, this is just a tragedy.
