Stan Walker is a New Zealand singer of Maori descent. Part of the lyrics is in Maori Language. The tattoo is also Maori tattoo. The outfit and jewelries are also Maori outfit and jewelries. This was filmed in NZ. He explained in the description the filming location: Te Puia (geothermal valley Māori culture & Kiwi Conservation Centre in Rotorua), Te Pā Tū (Maori Village in Rotorua), Waitomo Caves, Kaiate Falls, Mount Maunganui, Tongariro National Park. The hand movement is part of Maori dance. You should google Maori culture and dance. You can check his youtube channel when he sang Amazing Grace, Covering Kanye West "Ultralight Beam", Covering Crowded House song "Don't Dream it's over".

I grew up in Wellington and feel more aligned with Māori culture than Tahitian (but I can speak Tahitian) Yes Stan is amazing. I’ll have to check out his other music. And I love how, with the shrinking of the world, through technology, internet and quicker exchange of information and chat, there is a more collective feel to all indigenous peoples. Came to explain as i am also a Maori from New Zealand. Yes it is a tattoo, this song is so powerful and has so much meaning, its just so beautiful. He is singing parts in Maori which is the native Tongue of Maori and called Te Reo and it is making a come back. This was filmed here in New Zealand. None is native American or Asian, its Polynesian. His necklaces are greenstone not jade and called Ponamu. Hand movements are a big part of Maori and the faces are used for many reasons one of them being to intimidate our enemies.

When we wiri (shake the hand) it represents the leaves that blow in the wind and for us its a way to connect with our ancestors that have passed on. We write songs and speak of our ancestors often. We even build wharenui (meeting houses) that represent a common ancestor that our iwi or tribe and hapū subtribe descend from. We never forget we came from or who we descend from. Proud to be māori

Kia Ora, Isabel Wilkerson is an African-American Author who wrote Caste: The Origins of Our Discontent’s. Ava DuVernay an African-American director wrote and directed the film Origin. Ava saw some of Stan’s work and asked him to write and perform the Original song for the movie. Stan along with co writers Michale Fatkin, Vince Harder and Te Kanapu wrote ‘I Am’. The book is a must read. Some content of the book will be hard (for some) to swallow, however if you come to it with an open mind and a heart for change, it makes so much sense (well in my humble opinion) and then some. Please look Isabel Wilkerson up and see what she’s about, also Ava DuVernay. They’re both amazing and talented Women. I’m of Maori, American Samoan and Pakeha descent - born and raised in Aotearoa - New Zealand. Stan Walker is an amazing talent, as are his co writers for this waiata (song). There’s talk of him along with the co writers that they should be nominated for an Oscar for original song. Stan ‘Bro’ your an amazing and gifted talent. Native Americans and Maori have some of the very same actions in greeting and behaviours, most likely from having spent time together. We are Polynesian and our ppl traveled melenia ago until we finally came to Aotearoimataroa. Thats probably why there is a connection with the 7 nations. Song is a part of us. This is Stan's reaction to the movie. Indigenous ppl around the world would understand. Downtrodden ppl around the world would understand. To know where you come from is to know where youre going❤ Stan said it in his own words. I hope this song helps ppl understand that they have a connection to this world no matter where they are, no matter who they are.

The song is about dividing people up into race identity. Stan is creating division and separatism. He is mainly of European origin through his parents and the Maori part is much less in his dna , his music wasn't selling so he turned to singing and writing race hustling tunes all about how colonisation was bad for Maori. Stan being mainly European has benefited from colonisation, he's a liar and fool disowning his own whiteness because it doesn't profit him. It's pure bunkum. .

Stan Walker is an indigenous Māori from Aotearoa New Zealand. He is speaking Te Reo Māori the Native language of the Māori people. We are a Polynesian Island Nation Country found in the South Pacific near other South Pacific countries like Australia, Fiji, Tonga and Samoa. The area is commonly known as Oceania. Aotearoa New Zealand is in the Pacific Ocean and somewhat in between Asia and the Americas and have some shared whakapapa or genealogy so in a sense have some shared influence, as well as from a shared indigenous experience. Very cultural indeed. Tribal indeed. Aotearoa New Zealand has a melting pot of people in it including the indigenous Māori. When they vibrate/quiver their hands this action is called "wiri" and represents life force and derives from heat waves. This particular facial expression the bulging of the eyes is called "pukana" and is used to emphasise ans acknowledge words and phrases in songs, chants and haka that people connect to. Stan Walker has killer vocals and deserves to be recognised far and wide.

Maori are not indigenous , and stan is mainly european by descent . Aotearoa is a fictional name invented by a European around 1870. Maori never had a name for NEW ZEALAND, if they did then it would be in the maori version of the treaty - so get your facts straight

The hand movement is called "Wiri" its an expression of life force, showing you have an energy within you and you are drawing energy from around you, the earth, sky and all things living. Facial expressions for women called pūkana involves opening eyes wide and jutting out their chin. For men, it means widening their eyes and stretching out their tongue or baring their teeth. Though these expressions may be intimidating, they are not necessarily a sign of aggression but may show strong and deep-felt emotions.

New Zealand is such a beautiful place. About 20 years ago I travelled around on the North Island for about a week and have always dreamed of going back someday. The white necklace is likely carved bone…that’s a very traditional thing, but it’s mostly seen in the shape of hooks.

Research “the Haka” to learn more about Māori culture. Maybe this is one your husband could sit in on and react to as well, as it’s a very VERY masculine type of thing. Think warriors intimidating their enemies while boosting the morale of their own team at the same time. I think New Zealand has a team that does the Haka before a football game. Yup. The culture/people are Maori from Aotearoa aka New Zealand. The language is Te Reo Maori. The 'tattoos' are called moko (mor-kor) and are traditional and significant to the the Maori people. What you call Jade, we call Pounamu (poe-nah-moo). A greenstone native to Aotearoa. The white 'jewellery' is bone. Generally whale bone carved into designs significant to our people. The shaking of the hands is what we call the 'wiri' (wid-ee). The hands imitate the shaking of the leaves/branches of trees. The 'war face' is called a pukana (poo-car-nar) meant to scare/shock/warn. These days it's less about that and more cos we are just feeling it and let it out. I would love to see this performed at an awards show in the US. full haka and everything.

I know others with give you the info on Stan Walker, but I really appreciated how you went through your knowledge and feels as the video revealed itself to you. Never thought of Asian influences, but yeah..I can totally see your impression from that. I was introduced to Stan Walker through a song called "Aotearoa" and I recommend it to you. The hand movements are called ‘wiri’ in our language, which symbolises being alive or our life force and to signify life or being alive in the haka (dance). Everything in this video has cultural significant - the tattoos (tā moko), dances, facials, clothing, necklaces, movements. Everything is Māori culture which means so much to me and our culture. Stan Walker is Māori which are indigenous to New Zealand. Māori are Polynesian so there are some similarities to Asian cultures. The spirituality and beliefs are also very similar to Native American cultures. The film this song is for is actually about Isabel Wilkerson who is an award winning journalist and author so in a sense the song is about her and her strength.

Stan Walker is a very young talented and humble man, who has gone through alot to get to where he is today, His back ground is Maori which are the aboriginals of New Zealand or Aotearoa aka The Land of The Long White Cloud, he became noticed in Australian Idol, the necklace (Jade). In Māori culture is a greenstone necklaces and artefacts which are crafted into powerful traditional symbols, and gifted to the powerful, spiritual tribesmen. Māori spiritual leaders handed down this greenstone for generations, and leading by example the practice of gifting became widespread. Certain pieces of greenstone were actually recognised as having their own spirits, which chose their wearer, so carving or taking one for yourself was extremely bad luck as it would anger the spirit or guardian of the jade."

Some of the images are from the film e.g., the scene of the woman walking through the granite blocks is Eisenman's installation in Berlin for the fallen Jews of Europe, there's the Taj Mahal in India. I don't know much about the movie but it seems to reference various cultures that have been subject to colonization or genocide. Stan is singing parts in Maori, the native language of New Zealand. The Maori people were also colonized.

The quivering hand movement is common in Maori performance - it's called 'Wiri' and I believe is an expression of the life force, our own and in nature. For a next listen I'd recommend Stan's cover of Kanye west's song 'Ultralight Beam' - it really shows his amazing vocal range!

Our Maori culture is so beautiful and resonates with many yet unique in all its ways, Stan Walker is Aotearoa, New Zealand's Top Star!! along with many others but he, is truly a blessing not only to our country and our people but to the rest of the world!! It seems that most of the comments are only mentioning Stan's incredible singing, and rightfully so. He won Australian Idol when he was 19 years old, and he opened for Beyonce in Australia when she was touring in 2013. But the song is for the movie "Origin," by Ava DuVernay, a Black female filmmaker. It's about a Black woman, Isabel Wilkerson's book entitled "Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents." The woman in the video is Aunjunue Ellis, a talented actress who plays Isabel. Ava came into contact with Stan by way of Instagram (long story short). Ava and Stan are both incredibly talented. You'll have to do some Googling. I wouldn't just read the comments for information.

Bang on reaction and first time hearing our language of Aotearoa New Zealand, ka pai (well done). We are the younger people of the Hawaiian people from Aotearoa New Zealand called Maori sounds like mouldy but replace the "LD" with an "R" Stan made this song and film as a response to the film ORIGIN. Stan was approached and this is his "Taonga" treasure that he gave to share to the world.. We sincerely hope it helps peoples spirit become more settled within. Our body language imitates the wind, waves and the facial gestures are an emphasis of words or reactions to embolden our words or to 'sweeten' them with dance moves. There’s such a thing as Google and FYI it was the director Ava DuVernay who heard about Stan Walker and personally called him in NZ to write this song especially for her film Origin. He is an amazing singer and she’s an amazing director …this woman who has done this reaction is embarrassing herself I’m not sure what the tattoos have to do with his song nor whether he is tribal or not. What is she reacting to? Even more puzzling…is why? She’s so ignorant that it’s cringeworthy. The movie is about life and struggles of a woman (who you see in the video) I won't say any more than that. It was filmed here in my home country New Zealand. There are rumours afloat that Stan may be nominated for an Oscar not only did he sing it but he wrote, directed and produced the song. Everything is filmed in NZ and the people you see are the Maori people, indigenous to NZ. Not only that he did all this in 2 and half weeks. He's incredible. The performers flutter their hands quickly, a movement called wiri, which can symbolise shimmering waters, heat, waves or even a breeze moving the leaves of a tree. The facial expressions known as pukana helps to emphasise a point in a song or haka and demonstrate the performer's ferocity or passion. I hope this answers some of your questions!

I am, it captures the essence of who me are, our culture teaches us that we are not just the physical. our Whakapapa(geneology) connects us not just by blood, it is our Iwi(tribe) our Hapu(subtribe)Our waka(canoe our anscestors travelled on during migration from Hawaiiki) our Maunga(our mountain) our Awa(river) our Whenua(land) our Tipuna(anscestors) our Reo(our language) and our Marae(our meeting house), all of this is our identity and our wairua(our spirit,what remains of us after we are gone), and is extremely important in our maori culture

He is singing Te Reo which is our Maori indigueous language here in Aotearoa (land of the long white cloud.), He is polonesian descant they our indigenous Aotearoa New Zealand. Te Reo is very commonly spoken in our nation and it is beautiful language and culture but like all indigeous cultures there are people who dont like it which is sad. I am Pakeha (white) and have Maori in my family and I am very proud of our indigeous and there is some in our family.

I am Maori and can interpret. The waving hands is called a wiri. Like many languages, the hand is a language. For us it's a spiritual language that when we wiri, we raise vibration and open and unlock other worlds and dimension. Your given vibration and learn as a baby in the womb until you leave this earth. This song is about suppression. Detachment from your homeland & identity. Stan is reminding people about their roots & what it means to remember where you came from; your ancestors, your culture, your motherland. Hence the name "ORIGIN" (the point or place where something begins, arises, or is derived.) Sadly, people are forgetting their heritage and bloodlines. Cultures are slowly dying. We are being erased. We don't want to forget who we are anymore. We want to be one with our land & people.

You are correct in saying its jade and pounamu are the same thing captain cook called it green stone hence the name we maori call it pounamu it is a slightly diffrent variation of the jade that is found in china but both are formed the same way
