Enjoy your content. Basically the song is about jilted love. A handsome stranger comes to town, seduces her, tells her he is going to take her away, but skips town. Probably happened when she was young and now she still shows up in town everyday looking for him to take her with him. That's why everyone thinks she's crazy.

The man who wrote this (Alex Harvey)wrote it about his mother. She was a beautiful young girl from a very strict family. His father came into town very shiny & seemingly wealthy. He was in fact a con man or "a man of low degree' & broke his mom's heart. She never stopped believing in him & eventually passed away when Alex was still young. He wrote this while dealing with her death. *Fun fact: I was named after this song! It was on the charts (by Bette Midler) during the year that I was born & my mom loved it. I always told her that she had cursed me with the lyrics! 😂😂

I ran into Ms. Tucker when I had walked into a restricted area at the San Antonio livestock Show and Rodeo in 1985 or so, I was showing a pig that week. I was standing behind her, didn't know who she was and asked what all the excitement was about. She turned around and looked at me and said she didn't know. She smiled. I smiled. A crush began, lol. She was really nice and sweet as we spoke for a few minutes then they escorted her into the arena to perform. Someone finally came up to me and told me it was Tanya Tucker. Doh.

Listening to the cover by Home Free and Brooke Eden, I found out that songwriter Alex Harvey wrote this song in memory of his mother who like the character of this song, was misunderstood. Also, it was therapy for him after his mother's death. Tanya 's rendition is the second release, the first time it was done by Bette Midler, later it was done by Helen Reddy.

Delta Dawn, she's from the Mississippi Delta, Brownsville, near Jackson. She's looking for a mysterious dark-haired man. She wears a faded rose. Poor thing was ghosted years ago, and can't let him go. Too many good songs by Tanya Tucker. (Remember in "Redneck Woman," Gretchen Wilson talked about knowing all the words to every Tanya Tucker song?) Try "What's Your Mama's Name?" Or later, "Two Sparrows in a Hurricane."

Instead of stopping so much to guess what the song is about. Listen to the words a little longer. Like others have said. When she was young, She fell in love with a man, who wasn't well thought of. He promised to marry her, left town & never came back. Every day since then she comes back to town with her suitcase, looking for him to get married & take her to his home. Everyone thinks she crazy. After all this time, maybe she is now.

Nice song, I dug her voice. Helen Reddy had this out probably near the same time. Helen did a great duet with the Bee Gees, To Love Somebody. Actually to me her best performance ever. Also it's one of my favorite by the Bee Gees

Stumbled across this channel a couple of days ago, and was wondering if she'd listened to any Tanya (Tan-ya) Tucker. Glad to see this. Did anyone explain the song to her?

I think Bette Midler was the first to sing it. The next year Tanya had a top ten country hit with it and the following year Helen Reddy had a US Number 1 hit with it. Reddy is who I think of when this song is mentioned.

Hi ms Britt. Thanks for another episode. I would very much like to suggest the Mavericks, singing " I should have been true."A great group still performing and touring. The lead singers voice is intoxicating. Blessings to you. Either the album cover or live BBC 1994 is the best sound I think.

If you like Tanya Tucker, you should listen to her "Lizzie and the Rain Man."
