When they formed in 1975, they were all in the 15-16 year old range. The 2 guitar players, Joan Jett and Lita Ford went on to have big careers after the Runaways disbanded.

These young ladies used to tour all over the place without parental or adult supervision and perform. Things were just more laid back then when it came to stuff like that. They were a fun group and pretty popular when I was a young. Joan Jett was a member, as was Lita Ford came out of The Runaways. They made a movie about them a few years back and I think it's called "The Runaways". I loved them, of course. Girl power and all that stuff.

The Runaways movie was mostly based on Cherie Currie's book, which I still have. Great movie but it really burnished the horrible antics of the "predo" manager.

Joan Jett is called the “Godmother of Punk” and “Queen of Rock n Roll” & Lita Ford is the Queen of Metal, and both have pioneered women in hard rock since the 70’s! Joan got her first guitar at 13 as a Xmas present from her parents and was musically influenced by T-Rex, Bowie, Iggy Pop & SUZI QUATRO. At 15 years old she started the FIRST ALL GIRL punk/metal influenced hard rock band in 1975 which also featured a teenage Lita Ford on lead guitar and vocalist Cherie Currie (However, FANNY was the first all girl ROCK band but punk had not come into the music scene yet until the mid 70’s). In 1976 they debuted their first album “The Runaways” which spawned the classic song “Cherry Bomb”, which Joan Jett wrote as an audition song for vocalist Cherie Currie, alluding to her name and the fact that they were all “teenage firecrackers” (Cherie Currie, 16, wore a corset, fishnet stockings, black underwear and high heels on stage which gave them the reputation as “jailbait rock” which the other girls HATED, especially Lita). Although this was their most recognized song, it certainly does not define them as a band. Their album debuted the same time that Heart debuted their album “Dreamboat Annie”. Both bands had to deal with sexism and misogyny from the male dominated genre of hard rock, although Heart was backed by male band members, the Runaways got it worse being ALL teenage girls. They released “Queens of Noise” in 1977 and toured Japan where they were HUGE, they were NEVER taken seriously in America. Lead vocalist Cherie Currie quit the band during the tour making Joan the front girl of the band. After the tour they recorded what I think is their best album, “Waiting for the Night'' which Joan Jett wrote most of the songs, along with some songs written by Lita Ford. It was a punk/metal influenced album after touring in England and being exposed to the punk rock scene, later touring with the Ramones, Cheap Trick, etc. By 1978 there was heavy drug abuse and tension among the remaining 3 members of the band (Joan, Lita and drummer Sandy West) after they released their 4th and final studio album “And now, the Runaways” (which featured the song “Black Leather” written by Steve Jones and Paul Cook from the Sex Pistols). Joan Jett gravitated towards a Punk sound and both Lita and Sandy towards a more heavy metal sound. By Spring 1979 the band broke up and Joan Jett began her solo career which would last till this day. Later Lita Ford would also find mainstream success.

You have to understand the significance of what you just experienced. There were no other all girl groups doing this in 1977. The Runaways are also iconic because...sheesh, Joan Jett, Lita Ford AND Michael Steele of The Bangles all have ties to this band. Definitely changed the face of female led rock, love em or not.

I hung with these girls two times when they opened for my friends' band. My friends would promote their own shows and hired the Runaways to open for them. Being I had a truck I would help my friends hauling, set up, sound check and break down. for a 3 hour show you would be there for 5-6 hours, so I got to know them hanging between the band's sets. Cool girls, decent talent (Joan & Lita improved with age). It wasn't long after that that the Runaways went big time.

You should check out Wendy O’ Williams. I saw her open for Kiss in 1983 in El Paso, Texas. She had a blonde Mohawk if I remember right and a string bikini on bottom and two 1 1/2” strips of black tape on top! That was it. 😳 Sadly, a few years later she took her own life. Her band was called the Plasmatics.

Wendy was CRAZY on stage! I saw her in a club in Houston around 78' or 79'. She would bring out the chainsaw and start destroying stuff. Crazy show!

@@Ieeho98 she smashed a TV with a sledgehammer and threw it into the crowd and a gal in front of me (standing room only smashed together) got hit and had to leave. Then she sawed a guitar in half with a chainsaw and threw that into the crowd. I was about 6’ from the stage. This was KISS’s tenth anniversary tour with Vinnie Vincent on lead guitar.

They are credited as being the first all female hard rock group. The band began with 5 members, but there were 9 altogether. Founding members were Cherie Curry (lead vocals and keyboards), Lita Ford (lead guitar), Joan Jett (rhythm guitar) Michael "Micki" Steele (bass), and Sandy West (drums). The remaining 4 members - Jackie Fox, Victory Tischler - Blue, Laurie McAllister, and Peggy Foster were all bass players. Joan Jett went on to form Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Lita Ford became a solo artist and collaborated with other major artists, Michael Steele left the band to become the bassist for The Bangles. I'm not certain what became of the rest of the members. Anyway, loved the reaction, love you, take care and stay safe ❤️

The were the first successfully girl group and set the stage for groups like The Bangles, The Go, Go's and a lot of others! They struggled in the USA, but in Japan and Europe they were huge. According to a documentary with Joan Jett, who was the creator of the band, said the band members were going in different directions musically, she was going full punk rock, and disbanded the band cause she didn't want to get fired from the band she started. Also, at 20 and 21, you can't be a runaway any more, she said. But we got Joan Jett and The Blackhearts as a result and Lita Ford as a great solo artist!

You should have a look at the motion picture, "The Runaways," starring Dakota Fanning as Cherie Currie and Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett. These girls were around sixteen years old when the band was formed and they started touring, and, no, none of their parents accompanied them. Even in Japan. Can't beat the classic lineup: Cherrie Currie (lead singer) + Sandy West (drums) + Jackie Fox (bass) + Lita Ford (lead guitar) + Joan Jett (rhythm guitar) bad ass b*****es...and they would wear that as a badge of honor. Their success in the states was limited, largely because the establishment didn't think they could be successful as a "girl group". Joan Jett went on to a powerful solo career and still tours and records today. Lita Ford became huge in the 80's hard rock/hair metal scene. Jackie left the music industry; Sandy struggled to make it big, after a few bands and work as a session drummer and later left the industry, she later succumbed to lung cancer. Cherrie was a flaming star...after she left The Runaways she put out a solo album, she did some acting, worked as a drug counselor, and found a new passion...chainsaw carving, but she still finds time to record music every now and then.

There are many modern, female led bands that you can go see and hear right now, try Halestorm, Liliac, Dorothy, the Warning, Plush and Samantha Fish amongst others. You don't have to wish you could see them, you actually can, in their prime, kicking butt and keeping Rock alive. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎸🎹🎶

There was an all-girl band who predate the Runaways. The band was called Fanny and no, the name wasn't meant to be rude. It was founded by a pair of sisters - June and Jean Millington. You might want to check out "Special Care" from 1971.

Cherie Currie is a Goddess without whom there would be no The Runaways. The movie doesn't come close to doing justice to this crucial piece of Rock History. Her book Neon Angels will blow your mind. A fierce, independent firebrand, she has amassed several collections spanning the decades since The Runaways. Singer/songwriter/musicians/author/activist/chainsaw artist/actress, Ms. Currie continues to shape the terrain. Unlike others from the band, she never sold her soul and to this day remains a beacon of spirituality, sexuality and compassion.

In college in 76-80 in Chicago. We 2:42 definitely knew about the runaways. One more of the many true rock acts we loved. Yes we listened to all the prig rock etc.... But when we wanted to rock out this was one group we would play.

You've reacted to 2 Joan Jett songs "I Love Rock n Roll" and "I hate Myself for Loving you". This is Joan Jett's first band formed when she was 15/16 years old in 1975. In this video Joan Jett is the guitarist in ALL red at the far left. The lead guitarist is Lita Ford. Joan Jett wrote this song as an audition song for the "blonde bomb shell" Cherie Currie in 1976. To this day Joan Jett, Lita Ford and Cherie Currie still sing this song in their setlists as solo artists. I just saw Lita Ford live last month and she sung/played it.

I can remember the first time I heard this played on the radio. Summer of 1976, sitting on my front porch getting high. I loved the song, felt sure they would have a long great career but that only happened for two of them. Many years later Cherie Currie (lead singer) became really good at chainsaw carving. There's a number of RU-vid videos of her chainsaw carving and of her various works. Joan Jett, the writer of the song, continued to do the song for decades. In live performances she's often alter the lyrics a little from "Down the street I'm the girls next door I'm the one you've been waiting for' to 'down the street I'm the girls next door I'm the fu@k you've been waiting for. .... When I first started Cherie Currie was a young teenager I think most of them were teenagers I know I was it was a different time in a different era, but I still to this day don’t understand the full lingerie part The group didn’t stay together long they had some terrific musicians, and do you know Joan Jett she has moved on with a fabulous career. Lita Ford was a guitarist in the group. She had an OK career. I’m glad that you decided to take a looksee at the runaways 😂🤣

Actually Joan Jett and Lita Ford were the main song writers and guitarists but I liked Cheries unhibited style. This was from when I was a little kid. Super talented, the girls were taken advantage of by their manager. The manager also (allegedly) drugged Steele at a party to where she was barely conscious and raped her in front of everyone. Currie got to the point where drugs had taken over her life and walked out of a rehearsal never to return. Jett, Ford, and Steele recovered and went on to have great careers. Currie also recovered, got married and had a child. She is now a chainsaw artist. Sandy West, who founded the band with Joan Jett was a fantastic drummer but because of prejudice against female drummers, could not make a career after the Runaways breakup. She got in trouble and spent some time incarcerated. She was also a chain smoker and slowly died from lung disease. Instead of being protected, these incredible performers were used and left to fend for themselves. Thank you for sharing these fantastic musicians with us.

Your Daddy Don't Know and Girls Night Out are two dope songs by Canadian rock act Toronto. Holly Woods is the lead singer and honestly put Cherry Bomb vocals to shame. Sheron Alton played guitar and a handful of men played accompaniment. Don't get me wrong the Runaways had their place but they were very unpolished in this song.

Their manager,Kim Fowley,caught me right in the middle of Sunset blvd,and asked me in I wanted to be the lead singer of an all girl rock band. If we hadnt been standing on the yellow line I would have said yes. However,with his hair standing straight up,colored screaming green and googly bugged eyes indicated that he was a seriouis nut case. I had no idea who he was. I went down to the Gold Cup,on the blvd,and told my friends about it and they flipped. Telling me who he was and what he did for a living. Oh well,...

You have to understand that at this time in the rock/punk world, girls were considered to be nothing more than groupies. Female musicians in the genre were not taken seriously at best, and ridiculed and harassed at worst. The Runaways basically shoved a middle finger into everyone's face and showed that an all-girl group could rip the walls down. If the Runaways didn't exist, we wouldn't have Bikini Kill, the Donnas, L7, the Warning, or any number of great female bands.
