Have you ever seen a man look so great? He could have just walked out and Elvis would have elicited the same response. Trust me, I was in the audience in 1956 ,when he just walked to the microphone and the audience went “CRAZY”! Normal response in those days.
Story goes that Sinatra's weekly show ratings were low. They paid Elvis more $ than Sinatra himself earned for this show. I forget the exact amount but it was an astronomical amount of $ for like 9 minutes of air time. And yes, the ratings for the show soared - something like 72% of the TV viewing audience tuned in for it. Amazing the draw that Elvis had. For those of us who were there, it felt kind of like changing of the guard. How hard that may have been on Sinatra's ego. He was only in his 40's at the time. But Sinatra was my parents' icon. Elvis was ours.
If I remember correctly, they had to pay Elvis $125.000 for those 9 minutes. (Parker knew how to make a deal/money....that's why this was his last tv-performance for 8 yrs.....Elvis became too expensive to put him on TV)
He just got out of the Army where he was drafted for 2 years in the height of his career. He hadn't been seen for two years. He was nervous and he had never met Frank before this show. This was the Frank Sinatra show. This was in 1960 still fairly young here. He was told he had to wear a tux and not get to crazy with the shaken. Frank was older here and wasn't that crazy about having Elvis on his show but his ratings were sinking so he went along with it. Later they became great friends when Elvis got married and flew from Memphis to Vegas, Sinatra sent his private plane. When Elvis died, Sinatra said, "Elvis was a kind man who changed music and culture, I was just a singer, He was a dear friend." Watch the same time period, "Elvis Presley post Army interview" 1960 Graceland. That explains a lot about his thoughts and getting back into his career after a 2 year Army stint in Germany on the Russian Border. He was promoted to Sargeant. Thanks man.
That's a great interview pick the 12+ min version to get the full interview. When the show began Elvis walked in, in his Uniform. Nancy was Frank's Daughter and had just become engaged.
It was Elvis' first time on TV since he returned home from the service! Welcome back to Elvis!! Elvis is amazing!!! So Gorgeous, Elvis was a quadruple threat! ❤❤❤❤❤❤!
American singer and actor Elvis Presley served in the United States Army from 1958 to 1960 after being drafted to serve in the military as an active duty soldier for two years.
I think he came out so shyly because he wasn't sure what reaction he was going to get. He had to keep his movements down also. But the reactions of the crowd, I think, he was thrilled. Been 2 years since he had heard those screams. Elvis and Frank were friends until Elvis passed away. He had nothing but good to say about Elvis. ❤❤❤ Thank you for sharing.
Elvis was trying to exercise some restraint here. He couldn't just let go. He didn't want Frank to be embarrassed. Before he got to know Elvis he called rockers "cretinous goons."
Elvis's voice in the early 1960s was so beautiful and sweet, it changed and became fuller as he matured. This Frank Sinatra 'Welcome Home Elvis' TV show was immediately he'd got back from doing army duty in Germany so the first time the fans had seen him live for 2 years, no wonder they were going wild! He was extremely nervous (unbelievably had stage fright before every concert right to the end!), plus I'm sure he was trying not to overshadow Frank cos after all it was his show. If you research, you'll find that Frank didn't have much time for rock n roll or Elvis back in the 50s.
Sinatra had no time for Elvis or Rock & Roll in Elvis's early years in the industry and said a lot of really negative things about Elvis. They eventually became good friends and Frank came to appreciate Elvis as the talented singer & performer that he was. First time performing since he got out of the service, Elvis was extremely nervous in addition to which, he's singing in front of Frank who was an icon himself at the time. Never cared for Sinatra myself; he was of my mother's generation & I thought him boring compared to Elvis & his music. Still, have to give kudos where they're due. Elvis said that he was always nervous when first appearing on stage & that it usually took him 3 songs in to get comfortable.
It was Elvis' first TV appearance after he got out if the Army. According to Nancy (the girl in this TV) they were both nervous. The rating were through the roof during this particular show. In later years Nancy a singer in her own right made a movie with Elvis (Speedway 1968) and she and Elvis became good friends. Great reaction ❤
The inside joke you are referring to is spot on: in the 1968 Comeback Special you can see it the clearest in a moment when he's delivering a scripted line and Charlie Hodge interrupts him to pick a piece of tissue off his cheek. Elvis had just wiped the sweat off his face with a tissue a girl in the audience gave him and a little piece got stuck on his face without him being aware of it. Charlie got the piece of tissue off of Elvis' cheek and gave it to a girl in the audience who then, seriously, proceeded to PUT IT IN HER PURSE!!!! Elvis saw it and was both amused and embarrassed and what he said then is probably the same thing that went through his mind in this 1960 performance "Never ceases to amaze me, boy, I tell ya." while shaking his head in embarrassed disbelief.
Elvis was back from the Army he was at a crossroad in his career. He never really performed on stage except when he went to a Pearl Harbor event in 1961 or 62 he started to make movies until 68. He was worried about his career when he did his 68 comeback special but it proved he was still The King and from there he was starting to tour again and made his Vegas appearance from then on.
Elvis had just comeback from being stationed Germany for 2 years in a Tank Battalion guarding the border between Russia and Germany. So Elvis was probably a little nervous, he hadn't been in front of an Audiance for awhile. ☺️
Yes, it's all those little gestures that made his performances very special AND unique -- because it was not something we saw from singers back then. Performers sang w-barely a movement -- almost as of they had a shot of sedation. An interesting observation by a reactor during "Witchcraft" -- this person said Sinatra was pitch perfect (he was); Sinatra was louder than Elvis (he was); AND he was FLAT (absolutely). And there lies the big difference -- Sinatra may have had a good voice but no one ever put in the powerful emotion & passion that Elvis put into his songs -- even the upbeat ones.
He was trying to behave mainly but he also believed that everyone would have forgotten about him while he was in the army. So I think it’s more shock that he still has all these crazed fans after 2 years of basically nothing from him. Also the man LOVED his fans. 😂
The more I watch you watch Elvis I have watched you grow to love him. Now you know how everyone felt and why he's still loved as much today. It touches my heart
Hey CV, I have been waiting for you to react to Elvis singing in the Frank Sinatra show, this was the first performance he did after service in the army, I love this performance , it's History in the making and Elvis was always nervous in every my performance he gave , I was born two months later and have been a Lifetime Elvis fan , Can't touch Perfection and I love your reactions to Elvis as always TCB 1935
He was so nervous. You should react to his interview the day after he came home from army. He looks gorgeous!! Here's some suggestions... Without Love Stranger In My Own Hometown X-rated Blues Version Hey, I went on your website to find Elvis shirt. Didn't see it. I really want to purchase one. I asked before and you just said anything you want. No price or anything? Lmk please. I appreciate it. TCB ⚡👑🌹
Yes, Elvis was very nervous. This was his first appearance in front of. A live audience after being in the Army. That is The Frank Sinatra Show and they did a “Welcome Home” show for Elvis’ return from the Army.Elvis finds it funny that he can make a move or gesture that makes the girls scream. That’s what he laughs about. Nancy Sinatra is his daughter, not wife. But she was engaged.
He laughs like that because he is amused at the reaction just to him snapping his fingers and shaking his head. He knows exactly what he's doing and it's funny to him. During the 68 Special, he said "it never ceases to amaze me." He's 25 years old and just out of the army. It's interesting because Sinatra said terrible things about him and rock and roll, but now he's the All American boy. It's obvious Elvis has taken over the top spot previously held by Sinatra in his day. But, they remained friendly.
Elvis was just very humble and he never got over the screaming and adoration he got from his fans. He always suffered with stage fright, all the way through his career ❤
Believe it or not, Elvis was incredibly nervous before each performance. up until Las Vegas. Watch documentary movie Elvis, On Tour Once on stage he calmed down. But he prayed and walked around waiting for intro music on. But he was still quite young and his voice deepened more later. And if u think they screamed then w little movement, look at performance Fever.
Great that you give Elvis his due respect & have become a fan. Their “it sure sounds pretty” bit, is a reference to an older generation’s equivalents - when a young Bing Crosby was on Al Jolson’s radio show. They would sing together and say “Oh ain’t that pretty”
This is so fun, this TV special with Sinatra. I love how Elvis imitates Sinatra's style a bit in their duet. P.S. You shouldn't hate your voice in your videos, you have a good speaking voice for such videos!!
One of the things most younger viewers (under 50) didn't know was that as a prerequisite to appearing on early tv shows was Elvis was prohibited from performing any of his vulgar body gyrations. His cocky smiles when the girls scream from him just moving his shoulders or head is a silent "Got ya anyway" to the networks.
Ol Blue Eyes had a legendary voice but Elvis had the voice and a brilliant entertainer,Franky didn't think much of Elvis at first until he met him and apparently he couldnt get enough of him after that u know EP wasn't a part of the Rat Pack but he was present with the guys Sammy Franky&Deano it would of been the best 4some if these 4 entertainers appeared together on stage it woukd of been one for the century.TCB&TLC
Gosh CV it seems like it's been a long minute since you & E ; of course I've been out of pocket for a bit so I've been lagging 😔 It's so good to see this reaction from you. I love this Elvis video 👍 Stay safe out there CV & have a beautiful celebration this weekend for Father's Day!💐❤️ But you know CV, for the good Papa's out there, every day is Father's Day ; enjoy!
It was only later in his life that Elvis got over his stage fright and all the women screaming terrified him as well. So yes he was probably very nervous in this.
Beautiful young Elvis was swoon-worthy, absolutely gorgeous . As for the cheeky smiles, I think he was just amused by the effect he had on his audience .it was his first appearance since coming home from the army so I presume he was a little worried as to whether the crowds would still love him.
Dang now I find I missed you yesterday, I'm getting mad! I would be nervous too after 2 years! Wondering if I was still going to be accepted. He sings so beautifully! I miss him so much. His voice didn't get deeper until he got older
Elvis loved all the attention he knows what he does to all the ladies he don't have to do nothing but smile he knows what to do thank you for sharing this video with us
Elvis never thought he was all that but he did understand his moves would send the audiences into a tizzy. It always amazed him he could make fans go crazy. He never felt he deserved it.
Elvis said he had a bit of stage fright or sever nerves before any performance until he got out there. In his early days {and even a little later} he got a kick out of the women screaming at him. He found it hard to not laugh. I grew up watching all his movies and all of his televised concerts. I actually have all of his movies and still watch them from time to time. You should check out his movie clip "Trouble" from the movie "King Creole" from 1958. He played the tough guy really well. Look from Trouble the complete original movie scene. Also check out Mean Woman Blues full scene from his movie Loving You. Enjoy and thank you for entertaining us. It is fun to watch you discover artists hat I grew uo watching and hearing {and sometimes even dancing to} God Bless you and Yours.
Elvis was ALWAYS nervous before performing. I'm sure this was extra because it was his first public appearance after 2 years in the Army. This song was from his first post-Army album Elvis Is Back. His voice had noticeably improved in his 2 years away from the public.
Yes, Elvis is nervous, first personal appearance and with Sinatra, who wasn’t a fan, until it could add to Sinatra’s fan base. Elvis is 24 years old after returning 2 years away serving army after being drafted. Sinatra had been the major heartthrob during the 40’s into 50’s era. I’m sure he was experiencing stage fright, first time preforming on stage plus television program, this was a new experience and a huge t v show during 1960 for him….
To me Elvis showed respect to Sinatra this was his first appearance on Tv coming out of the army of course he was nervous but go he was so hot and talented thank you love your Elvis reactions as always 🎉
You have listened to many Elvis songs so I will suggest some Sinatra for you.: "Fly Me To The Moon" "My Wsy" "Strangers In The Night" "she's York New York" "I've Got You Under My Skin" "That's Life" "Witchcraft" "You Make Me Feel Do Young". These are just for stsrters. Sinatra has a long !omg list of songs ***** Nancy, the lady who came out on stsge, is Sinatra's daughter. Great reaction.
Both men were nervous CV! Elvis, because it was his nature and Frank because he had launched a very derisive commentary against Elvis a few years back. Elvis’ response was very complimentary to Sinatra though finished with “but Mr. Sinatra should not have said that.” I have read that with the exception of Sammy Davis Jr., Sinatra and friends snubbed during the taping of this show. Sadly, this was quite common for Elvis as he performed at various venues as he was regarded as an uncouth, no-talent, hick. Frank had also asked Elvis to ease up on his gyrations so as not to offend his audience. I am left to wonder if anyone ever worried about offending Elvis. He was considered open game by the established entertainment et others. Since ratings were Sinatra objective, he doused Elvis with a very hefty sum of money for his nine minute appearance. I suppose there was some revenge in that. Oh yes! I almost forgot that Elvis first movie after returning from the Army was GI Blues in which Juliet Prowse was his leading lady. Juliet was a fiancé at the time to Frank Sinatra. She and Elvis had a fling. Now that’s revenge! Thanks CV,. I so loved watching you, while picking up on the tiny nuances in this one. There was a lot going on.❤️
A lot of old old Elvis fans get so annoyed when I say this. ( I'm only 41 what do you want) But I often think about the kind of women he got. I mean the women we know about were cute but I was reading that he slept with hundreds of women, with an s on the end. As a dude I'm just like wow man I wish I was that for just one day.
Interestingly, Elvis Presley did not have intercourse with "hundreds" of women.... though it has been claimed by many a jealous and envious male or wishful female. He had many beautiful girlfriends, yes.
One reporter said Frank had girls screaming but Elvis had girls crying. He said he never had ever seen girls crying. That was the difference in Frank and Elvis. I kniw i am one if those girls.❤❤❤❤
Elvis had a very wide vocal range. That is why his voice is soft or high sometimes, very deep at other times. He's laughing because he thinks it's funny that his smallest gesture brings screams.
Try some country, Patty Loveless, "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive" live version ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1n57WBtvtC4.html. Patty explains her family connection to coal mining before the song and then sings a great, emotive version (emotive as in all her songs). Rolling Stone magazine included her their list of the greatest 200 singers of all time, any style, any gender. She was mentored starting about age 14 by Dolly, among some others.
