I would amen these choices. Only negative back then were the short song lengths, like Credence Clear Water Revival, were relatively short songs. Though later as technology grew, song lengths did as well.
@@Smittay-Sr. I don't think Led Zeppelin or the Who or The Moody Blues or... Well, there are a lot of bands 'back then' that didn't get that memo. If you were listening to radio-friendly versions, they were short, but then you haven't heard the whole songs in their entirety.
All three members of the band were children of military families stationed overseas. As kids, they'd heard about this place called America, but hadn't ever been there. They reunited in the US as young adults, and formed a band. They remembered how fascinated they each were as children about a home land they weren't born in, and so named the band America.
Wrong> They did meet in england as sons of military parents, but actually started jamming in a garage, discovered they talent and from there lit up the 70' and beyond. Saw em live at a club touring in they were still tight and sounding like their recorded songs.
I'm a black woman.. Been rockin' this tune "on the regular" for years.. Just watched the Janet Jackson documentary and discovered that she sampled it in one of her songs.. I now feel "understood". I'm not alone.❤️🎶🎵
These guys were all over the radio in the 70s. Along with the Eagles,Pure Prairie League, Bread,Seals and Croft. And I'm missing quite a few. The seventies were a great time musically. Many different styles we're being played on the radio. Soft rock Hard Rock to Disco.
I listened to America a lot during the 70s and I'm sure I still have at least one of their albums in my collection. Very good band. I also like the band, Bread, that kind of reminds me of them.
They're still making wonderful music. The three members were all superb songwriters, guitar players, and singers. Great acoustic music for 50 years. "Sister Golden Hair" was another great hit song, but their album tracks are wonderful, too. A lot of their lyrics are tough to figure out, but just enjoy the music and the feeling it gives you!
"Horse with No Name" and "The Last Unicorn" are the songs that made me a fan of them. They have plenty more excellent songs as well, but those are the 2 I'd recommend. If you want something w/ a little more grit, try "Green Monkey"
America got together in High School in England , sons of American service men over there. Their first album came out when they were just 19, and was so huge they had the money to move back home. Their 2nd album Homecoming details a lot of being back in America after many years, Ventura Highway is one of those.
The 60's-70's was an unbelievably rich era for music. The average listener routinely listened to far more different "genres" than today. That's because the genres were just forming. There are lots of deep, deep wells from which to pump inspiration. For folk rock like this try some Loving Spoonful, Buffalo Springfield, Crosby Stills (and Nash and Young at various times), Carole King.
From the late 60’s through the 70’s and 80’s has the best music. A little of the 90’s but music changed. Voices are corrected in studios etc.. the true talent of music writing and artistry was back when I grew up, THANK YOU for helping keep good music alive!
This is not the original studio recording. But, I love your reaction to the song. One of the greatest bands from the 70s. Several more songs to get to from this band, you must go down this rabbit hole, their music is just awesome
Excellent Reaction. Without a doubt you have to check out their song "Sister Golden Hair Surprise" It's a banger.!!! America is one of the best story telling bands, Great Vib.
This one is dreamy - one of my favorites from back in the day! Try Sister Golden Hair, also by America. Great reaction guys! ❤️ Also try “Never Found the Time.” :)
This song brings back memories of hitch hiking The Ventura Highway during the summer in the late 60’s. Nothing like it. There wasn’t the concern about who picked you up. Most often, a Volkswagen bus driven by someone with no particular place to go.
I remember hitchhiking in the early 70's and picking up hitchhikers as well but times change and the late 70's things started feeling different and i never did either again. Sad !!!
Such an epic 70’s classic. Go on a journey of the Decade of the greatest music ever, in all genres. Now y’all are seeing why we struggle with modern music! Just listen to the music of our generation!
Definitely need to listen to "Horse with no Name" was all over the radio when it came out. America was a great group. Great acoustic guitarists and harmonies.
America's debut album hit #1 in 1972, and they had 2 other albums that were in the top 5. They had eight Top 10 singles. Their two #1s were "A Horse With No Name" & "Sister Golden Hair."
Yes, America's "Venture Highway" has a great vibe but so do many of their other hits. You guys should react to as many of these songs as you can. Choose any that you can find . Imho, you will love them all! Enjoy :)
America was popular when I was a kid in the 70's but I was a bit too young to really be into their music. When I was in college in the early 90's I picked up a copy of the greatest hits at a pawn shop and I have never looked back since. Their music is just...indescribably good.
Loved this song back in the day, still love it. I used to love when it came on the radio, right when i was actually driving on the Ventura freeway, didn't want the song to end. Glad you got to this one, thx!
America is such a great band with so many great songs!!! I can't imagine living thru my teen years in the 70s without 'em!!! I found a great DVD of them playing "Live at Musikladen," with no audience. It contains pretty much all of their big hits with the exception of 1975's "Sister Golden Hair," which I love!!!
When you guys said that Janet had sampled this, I was like, “Nope! “ and went straight to google. Turns out you two aren’t the only ones learning things tonight!!
Loved that reaction. When you recognized that opening riff especially. Y'all definitely have a great ear for music. "Sandman" is my favorite, but they have a bunch of goodies. Got the 45 record of that song the week it was released. Wore it out.
America is a rock band that was formed in London in 1970 by Dewey Bunnell, Dan Peek, and Gerry Beckley. The trio met as sons of US Air Force personnel stationed in London, where they began performing live. Achieving significant popularity in the 1970s, the trio was famous for its close vocal harmonies and light acoustic folk rock sound. The band released a string of hit albums and singles, many of which found airplay on pop/soft rock stations. "Ventura Highway" is a 1972 song by the band America from their album Homecoming, written by Dewey Bunnell. Dewey Bunnell, the song's vocalist and writer, has said that the lyric "alligator lizards in the air" in the song is a reference to the shapes of clouds in the sky he saw in 1963 while his family was driving down the coast from Vandenberg Air Force Base near Lompoc, California, where they had a flat tire. While his father changed the tire, his brother and he stood by the side of the road and watched the clouds and saw a road sign for "Ventura".
For me, America (the band) is like finding an old coin on the ground and when you wipe off the dirt it's solid gold. Loved the video thanks for sharing! Peace!
A huge band in the 70's...soft rock.. Chicago, Bread, LRB, so many amazing bands. A Horse With No Name is another huge hit for Chicago. That feeling you are speaking of is why we all loved Chicago back in the 70's and still. Yes...massively popular.
In the 70s almost EVERYBODY owned the "America's Greatest Hits" album. Every song on it was great. "I Need You", "Lonely People", "Tin Man", "Sister Golden Hair", "Horse With No Name", "Don't Cross The River", "Daisy Jane"
Fantastic reaction you guys. It sounded like a remastered version. Doesn’t quite sound like I remembered it but great nonetheless. Fun fact, George Martin, who was the Beatles producer, was also America’s producer. Could be why it touched you the way it did. He was magic. TBH, I never would have thought to request it just because of the majority of your reactions are to country and metal. Not a criticism, just an observation. 🔥❤️
Agreed folks, this lost dynamics, probably has been squashed by compression and maybe even pitch adjustment. You responders need to hear the original, unfucked one. Sorry for the profanity but some people actually live to destroy great music
America is one of my favorite bands ever. I was born in 1973, few years after they dropped this album, but I heard this song and "Horse With No Name," throughout my childhood. It always makes me feel happy and wistful. My husband and two teenage children recently went on vacation in California for the first time, and we drove up, what they call, Ventura Highway on our way to Monterey. I had to play this song for my kids as we drive through the beautiful mountains and canyons. It brought tears to my eyes! Thanks for the great review!
Anytime You Want To Just Listen To Some Beautiful Music While Doing Stuff Around The House Or Just Relaxing,, You Can Always Count On America,, Firefall,, Bread,, Seals & Crofts,, Etc.
I remember buying and listening to America's Greatest Hits album back in the mid 70's. Was blown away. Every song is good. About 10 of them on the album. 1st time viewer of your channel. You two are extremely watchable. Your love of music rings true. New subscriber.
SO great to see you, young, beautiful people, react to the classics. When I started singing, around 5, I was Hooked On Harmony, not phonics. HA! 58 now, still in a band. Your realization of the sampled hook line was priceless! Much love, from NC! Peace
One of life's true memory songs. I know where I was when I first heard this...in Fiordland New Zealand with my Aunties when I was ten. Love this ethereal song.
America always lifts my spirits and takes me back to such a simpler time in my life. You two are absolutely a delight and SO glad you were digging on this. Many, Many more to check out by America!
I think this song makes everyone who hears it ‘emotional.’ You guys are right that ‘Ventura Highway’ is something otherworldly, and just takes you away. It’s a superb piece of music from a bygone, but not forgotten era. GREAT JOB.
Your reaction was so cute at the beginning! This was my make out band in high school, the early 70s. Just pop in the 8 track tape, and all down hill from there!😜 Seriously, one of my favorite groups, love the harmonies!
They have a music library that you would love to own. I’ve been listening to them for over 50 years and everytime I hear one of their songs, it’s as good as the first time I heard it. And I played in several “America” copy bands, and their music cheers up any crowd.
I lived this song. My name is Joe I was in my late teens, a long haired kid hitch hiking Ventura highway, LA to SF when this song came out. In the summer time, just a hippie kid out on life’s adventure, jumping into cars with strangers and taking my chances. Meeting cute young girls and scary old strangers. Going from this song to riders in the storm. Never knowing if you were going to get laid or be killed. Ventura highway
Listen to any of America’s music it will give you chills than. You will flow off to a very nice place that we went through and STILL do with their music
Another artist from around the same time is Cat Stevens. He is amazing! I highly recommend "Father and Son", "Wild World" and "Moonshadow". You will be blown away!
This song was released in 1972. (my jr year of hs) America has a great catalog and is a wonderful rabbit hole to travel down. And as far as getting emotional, I've found this. Now that I'm old and my arms are all crepey, I don't get goosebumps from music anymore. But it makes my eyeballs sweat, even when it's not sad. lol
I saw America in concert in 1977. I remember it like it was yesterday! Both of my children are in their thirties and they grew up listening to America And now So are my grandchildren!❤
This is the same level music that I think John Denver was able produce, music that feels like you heard in a previous life, so familiar, you immediately connect!
America was very popular in the 70;s and stood around for a long run , another group and song that will go right to your soul is a group called Procol Harum , the song is called A Whiter Shade Of Pale , amazing tune and recording, not only will the studio version blow your mind but there are several live videos of the band performing the tune that are fabulous ... take care , stay safe
Brilliant reaction! One of the best I've seen: the recognition with surprise still! I love it! This is my favorite America song, and they have a ton of great songs (hits and deep cuts). Your emotionality came through and is similar to how I experience the song! I have no idea why, but I don't see a ton of America reactions (if I do, it's usually "Horse with No Name," which is a great song). Anyway, this kind of reaction is why I love reactions, and why this is one of the best I've seen. I realize it's actual work for you, and I appreciate it as a fan of the music/musicians you react to. Thank you.
In driver's education during the 70's, we were out on the freeway when this song came on. The student driver cranked the volume and greatly sped up. He failed that day, but it was a riot.
Such a great reaction! Tasha's realization of the sample was too cute! And then T & Tasha really found a great vibe! This is what reactions should be all about.
That reaction was amazing 👏. You should check out Tin Man, Sister Golden Hair and A Horse With No Name. All are very good and possibly reminiscent, from something you've already seen or heard.
"America" was a massive super group starting in the late sixties through the early 80s. This is a good find for you. They have beautiful songs and great themes of peace and good feeling. They continued to tour and produce music through 2000 ... at least as I can remember ...
