They definitely can give everyone a penalty. On November 14, 2015 there was a line brawl on a Jets predators game that had already gotten out of hand. The result was that 8 penalties were given to players on either team. With 2 players already in the box for each team, it ended with 12 players in the Penalty box, 6 from each team.

I was a referee/linesman, and they actually train us in stopping fights. Referees are not fond of getting punched in the face, so we wait till the boys start to get tired are no longer swinging as wildly as before, and THEN we jump in and stop a fight. As a general rule, you never want to try and break up a fight alone, although there are a few exceptions. The last thing you want to do which can happen if you were to go in alone is to grab one pf the two fighters from behind, allowing the other guy to punch the guy you're restraining to a pulp. Think of the mob movies where a guy has the crap beat out of him while two others hold him up. When you just have two guys fighting the linesmen coordinate, so they both know that linesman #1 has the guy in red, and the other has the guy in white. Then they stay in eye contact with each other and go in at precisely the same time by grabbing both arms and getting in between the two combatants. This way, neither player gets an extra shot it, or at least they shouldn't if properly executed. The only time a ref will try to break up a fight is if the other referees/linesmen are already involved breaking up other fights in line brawl scenarios, and there are two completely mismatched fighters, and the bigger guy is really beating the smaller guy. That's one of the few scenarios where a single ref would try to stop a fight.

Adam you will find that every single time that there’s a fight in a hockey game. Never once in the history of the game of hockey has any fan gotten up and walked out of the arena in disgust. Everyone stands up and cheers for their team. Fact.

You should react to the history of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers rivalry. It’s a bitter hard fought rivalry with tons of fights, line brawls, and intense playoff series. Both teams and cities are on opposite sides of the state and they really hate each other. I won’t say what side of the rivalry I’m on but growing up watching it has been some of the best hockey to see!

Chara can play and fight , he won the Norris ( best defenceman) and usually he owns every fight making others look like puppet. Many people like me do enjoy seeing the rare times someone challenging him well like Maroon did in this one. And in today's hockey you kinda have to be really good to still have a contract at 42 years old , youre seeing old Chara in this one.

I love how it opens with the Battle of Alberta. That was by far best game I've watched in Long time. Calgary Flames and The Edmonton Oilers are both NHL hockey teams located in Alberta Canada. The rivalry is fierce and that game was a true battle to the end. Great game!

Not sure if anyone mentioned it yet, but in the Tampa v. Boston clip the puck was actually in. The siren going off later in the clip while the players are playing is Toronto, the video review hq dudes, signaling to the refs that they got the call wrong and the puck was completely across the line, therefore we’ve got a good goal! Happens occasionally on close calls like this that a ref might not be able to see but video review definitely can.

One of the unwritten rules of hockey is you NEVER hit the opposing team's goalie, ESPECIALLY after the whistle. That's how you incite a riot.

FYI, Talbot&Lucic used to be Oilers and Smith&Neal used to be Flames. The teams switched players several months before&they had no problems fighting their previous teammates.

I can’t remember if any happened in the NHL but in other hockey leagues there have been occasions of refs fighting if a player was too rowdy. In MMA there’s been many more occasions of refs having to fight to get a fighter off his opponent if the fight ended and he’s still clobbering the guy. There’s compilations online of this stuff you could check out.

The very first clip is between the Calgary Flames and the Edmonton Oilers. The rivalry between these two teams is one of the oldest and most heated in all of professional sports, and is called "The Battle Of Alberta".

The goalies are like: "Well, the rest of the teams are scrapping so...fuck it...let's go at it!" Very rare in NHL for that to happen, but very enjoyable.

I'm a Bruins fan, been watching hockey since 1975. Three things: 1. Zdeno Chara CAN fight. Mostly because he is strong and is 6'9". This clip is recent with Maroon and Chara is cross checked in the legs by Cibelli. That's why he goes down like that. 2. Bob Probert was the best and toughest fighter that the league has seen. They called him the Heavyweight Champion. He lost very few fights, most notably to Tie Domi, but when he did lose he always got even and then some in the next fight. 3. Every hockey fan in the league besides Avalanche fans were cheering on Darren McCarty for pounding Claude Lemieux. Claude was a cheap shot artist and whenever he was finally confronted he always turtled on the ice like you see there. Kudos to McCarty for just continuously punching him in the back of the head.

Chara is actually pretty good at fighting, he usually has a large reach advantage. Maroon is the only guy I remember beating him but he’s very good at fighting himself

"And Joseph with 3 great rights" That entire fight is a historic Blues fight BECAUSE of the commentary, that and the St. Patrick's Day Massacure with the Blawkhawks... basically the entire central division is ready to beat the shit out of each other 24/7. So if you ever go to a game I reccomend when two central teams are playing each other or another heated rivalry like Battle of Alberta.

Chara also swung a 6'2 (188cm) 220 pound (101kg) man named Bryan McCabe in a circle like he was a stuffed wrestling toy.. so ya he can handle himself in on-ice combat

Height is a bit deal in hockey fights usually, so Chara can crush most people. A stiff-arm keeping them at distance and they literally can't fight back. If someone tries to close the distance, since you remove the friction from your feet so to speak, then he will just push you around the ice as he tries to get closer, with you two maintaining the same distance via arm. One of the benefits/curses of playing on ice.
