He is scary, other in the list of realistic Disney villains are mother Gothel and Gaston, but Frollo is by far the scariest to me. I lived in a deeply catholic environment, I still have faith because the bubble I grew up in was kind and accepting,they always taught me it was about love, acceptance, and helping one another. So Frollo was the type of shit I encountered when I got out of that bubble and... It was scary, to see how much evil and damage people did to others in the name of the same things I believed in. And bitch, I saw this movie when I was like, 7 😂 i was shook, my mom was scrambling trying to answer all my questions, specially about hellfire.

The Off-Broadway musical of this movie keeps a variant of the book ending - probably why it didn't get brought to Broadway. Disney opted for Frozen the musical instead (apparently because they didn't want to pay for the entire massive choir for all the chorus parts, but 🤨)

He was corrupted by his very status, position and ego-stroking of his life.... he only really truly feared for his own soul the moment he looked upon the judging gaze of the saints depicted on Notre Dame... and he humbly asks for he must do to save his soul from what he'd done. And alas, even though he might have accepted the duty... he never truly did what he was asked to do - and in the end he gets to fall into hellfire while clinging to the demonic-smiling gargoyle head he had been clinging to in fear or loosing his life.

Quasi giving his blessing to Esme and Phoebus and putting himself permanently in the friendzone is so mature of him, especially when you consider the motivations between the three guys after her. Frollo lusted after her and instead of handling his feelings, wanted to kill her bc of it. Quasi put her on a pedestal and practically kissed her feet, which is also an unhealthy way to view someone and their relationship would never be equal. Phoebus admired her strength and defiance in the face on injustice, and that was the basis of their relationship, fighting the machine together. So from a hardcore Quasi fan, Phoebus was the best choice, really.

I looked up translated lyrics for Hellfire, and the chanting is actually a prayer of confession. It’s a kind of irony where Frollo is saying that he isn’t the sinful one, and it’s all the gypsy’s fault, the monks are confessing that they have sinned, and are asking God to show his mercy. While Frollo’s saying “It’s not my fault!” The chanting is saying “by my fault.”
@LexisThoughts
@LexisThoughts 3 года назад
Unbelievable that frollo can't even confess right. Of course he is blaming someone else during his confession
@kinagrill
@kinagrill 3 года назад
Yup the latin in Hellfire is all about 'seeking forgiveness for one's own faults and sins'. Frollo however is so egocentric that he literally only had one moment in his life of moral loss - the beginning of the movie where he killed Quasi's mom and he looked upon the saints depicted on notre dame... and felt true fear for his own soul and truly accepted his wrongdoing. He did however not follow up on the Archdeacon's words of raising quasi as his own.... Frollo never took the baby in as his own child. Yet in Hellfire it's almost as if some angel is still trying to show Frollo he needs to stop, to ask forgiveness to just.... ACCEPT the faults he has.... but he ends up just getting more and more consumed to the point of actually attacking and invading notre dame itself, finally taking that last irrideemable stop which cannot be forgiven.
@AG_KEMPER
@AG_KEMPER 3 года назад
Remember, most kids (even Catholic kids) wouldn't recognize the Latin versions of those prayers. Alan Menken had to have known this, yet he still went the extra mile and added those layers anyways because he must have figured that at least the adults who grew up Catholic (most would have grown up with the Latin Mass) would pick up on it. He didn't have to go this hard on the lyrics, but he did it anyways because if we couldn't appreciate it as kids, we sure as heck can appreciate it as adults.

Personally, I like the idea of the Cathedral itself being alive in the movie. Not only does it add an explanation for why the gargoyle head came alive as Frollo was falling to his death, it also adds an additional contrast between him and Quasimodo. Quasi, a friendly and humble young man who does what's best for those around him, is beloved by the holy sanctuary and is treated as a friend. Meanwhile, Frollo, a wicked man who abuses his position and falls to multiple sins (mainly pride and lust), is despised by it and is eliminated by its hand. I do agree, though, Hugo and Victor (the tall and short gargoyles) were incredible annoying. I found Laverne to be more enjoyable, since at least that one had good lines and a mentor-like role rather than being pure (and very botched) comic relief. And Esmeralda is like 20. That feels a LITTLE bit weird. But still not weirder than Frollo who's like 70 wanting Esmeralda.

•It's a Catholic Choir. •It's based on a very dark source and this is by far one of Disney's darkest films. •It's Latin and it says, "Day of wrath, that day shall consume the world in ashes as prophesied by David and the Sybil. What trembling is to be when the Judge is come..." •Yes, she's dead. •You cannot hide your actions from God or from the Saints and Apostles. •That's one of the ongoing questions. •Easter eggs. •Partially. The technology was new at the time. •Keep in mind that the setting in 15th Century France. They're really into public spectacles and Catholics are a very superstitious lot. Also life expectancy was a lot shorter in the 15th Century than here in the 21st Century, so it was allowed to marry young, especially for girls. •And with that, Frollo became one of Disney's darkest villains. •The Archdeacon was referring to God. •The chorus of God Help the Outcasts was one of my favorite scenes musically growing up. •The chant in-between Heaven's Light and Hellfire is called the Confiteor. It reads, "I confess to God Almighty, to Blessed Mary ever Virgin, to the blessed Archangel Michael, to the Holy Apostles, to all the Saints." •Hellfire is by far the darkest Disney villain song, which is why it's a favorite to many. •It's again Latin, meaning "Through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault." •So Frollo, unlike many Disney villains what are just evil for the fun or sake of it, believes himself to be good. That all of his actions, no matter how wicked or unjustifiable, serve his idea of God's will. In contrast, you see his conflict with the Archdeacon to show the difference between those who claim to be men of God and actual Men of the Cloth. •Frollo is among the Top 10 Disney Villains for sure. •No, feel free to skip. The Gargoyles get mixed reactions anyway and their song is the "worst" in the film, especially when you have Bells of Notre Dame, Out There, God Help the Outcasts, and Hellfire to consider. •Quasimodo-Patron Saint of the Friend Zone. •The "we're only made out of stone. We just thought you were made of something stronger" line is the saving grace of the gargoyles. •No, that is molten copper. Medieval churches had some defenses set up in the event of a siege. •That was a dagger. What Frollo then pulled out was a sword. •Frollo died as he proclaimed; "And He shall smite the wicked and plunge them into the fiery pit."

Can I say that frollo's villain song is one of my favorites because they make him so real and they show what can happen to people who depend too much on religion (and not the actual morals or teaching) and would rather put all the blame on others than to take a look at themselves and admit that something is wrong with them and might need help.... And they use religion as a crutch and scapegoat for any wrongdoing. They really show the torment that he's going through and how messed up he is mentally. And how he is Soo overcome with list that he completely backpedals from his first stance of wanting to have nothing to do with her except for her being arrested to straight up saying chose me or die. I love complex villians
@LexisThoughts

Yeah i agree honestly it shows how hypocritical people can be sometimes when regarding religion, like when someone hits their wife and children but still goes to church everyday. It isn't the fault of the religion it is the people and how they interpret it which deters others from it. It is shameful to see people like frollo who use religion as a crutch especially when i see people like my mom who use it to inspire them to do better.

I don’t know if someone has said this already, but in the live stage musical version (check out Hunchback from La Jolla Playhouse on RU-vid), the gargoyles’ dialogue are his imagination. Because Quasimodo lives in the bell tower, he’s gone mostly deaf, so his speaking voice is what you would hear from a hard of hearing person, but when he sings, it’s pure and strong because it’s from his good heart that doesn’t get destroyed from his surroundings. (And his singing voice in the live musical is FANTASTIC!)

I honestly didn’t care for the Hugo novel and found it to be kind of boring. Which in turn is why I’m not a fan of the American Disney stage musical and find it to be highly overrated. Quasimodo and Esmeralda aren’t very likable in the Hugo novel and the American Disney stage musical so when they died I simply did not care or feel anything. The choir narrating everything really got on my nerves. Flight Into Egypt is boring, lame and forgettable. Say what you want about A Guy Like You but it’s a least memorable. Say what you want about the Gargoyles but at least they didn’t give mindless exposition. Disney actually did a stage adaptation in Berlin from 1999-2002. It’s a bit closer to the movie story wise but much darker in tone with a PG-13 feel to it. It also borrows some elements from the Hugo novel A.K.A the good aspects and ideas. The Gargoyles humor is toned down and confirmed to be In Quasimodo’s imagination and I think are funnier than they are in the movie. Esmeralda actually dies in this. But unlike the American version and the Hugo novel, it’s handled far better and she’s a more likable character. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xP8cM6QRkA4.html

So from what I remember reading. The majority of the animators admitted that the interpretation of the gargoyles are all in Quasimodos head. The extra moments, like them helping fight, is Quasimodo ideas of how to help the situation against the invasion and the insulting the gargoyles do with each other and as well as the advice they give each other are most likely Quasimodos thoughts and actions that constantly go through his head. As someone with mental issues and who was bullied mercilessly for years, I was able to follow the idea that Quasimodo has imaginary friends pretty well.

Ok everyone has weighed in on Esmeralda's age here, I get it. Lot of people saying 16 was fine in 1444 (when the film is set), lot of people saying she is meant to look and be older in the Disney film. That's all fine, but. She's 20? Because it is based on the book, and in the book she and Quasimodo were essentially switched at birth. I am not gonna go into thatwhole other can of worms but yea. They are the same age, with only a few months difference. So even if they weren't switched at birth in the movie, we can assume the ages remain constant, and we know definitively that Quasi is 20 and the prologue happened 20 years prior. She's 20, guys. Also, yes, EVERYONE hates the gargoyles. Yes, they are meant to straddle the line between imaginary and reality, showing us how isolated Quasi has been, but they were just terrible and annoying. The German adaptation and the more recent Broadway-hopeful adaptation both make it more clear they are imaginary or cut them altogether, I think. Also also, I am personally offended by you not mention Paul Kandel's absolutely wild vocals as Clopin Trouillefou, the storyteller-narrator character, because that last note in the Bells of Notre Dame is- it's heart-stopping. What even- how did he- the PIPES on that man! I have a lot of Opinions about the character on the whole so that's just me. Also also also. They're chanting in Latin. It's a Catholic church. All the Latin chanting are real hymns and such, and they all have meanings that tie into the scene. It's very cool.
@LexisThoughts

Oh true i probably should've figured she is around 20 in the movie since she is supposed to be near quasi's age but then again i never knew the story before watching but yeah. Also i probably should've said something about the narrator's voice because i absolutely loved it when he sang the bells of notre dame that song made me completely invested in the movie.

Someone kinda touched this, but those gargoyles only exist in Quasimodo's mind. (Don't ask me how Victor hurt a guard by dropping a brick on his head. It could possibly mean that it was actually Quasimodo who injured him.) So giving the gargoyles different personalities was Quasimodo's method to deal with his loneliness since the only person he interacts with is Frollo, and Frollo is gone for a good portion of the day. Hence, also why Frollo couldn't see the gargoyles move or talk. It also explains the bad advice about Esmeralda. Quasimodo was trying to give himself hope that Esmeralda may actually have feelings for him. So their advice was Quasi's self-advice. P.S. Disney confirmed that the gargoyles all represent portions of Quasi's personality.
@LexisThoughts
@LexisThoughts 3 года назад
oh yeah that does explain the whole advice thing about esmeralda i was so mad at them for that but you just made me realize that it was quasi getting his hopes up. I was thinking they were in his mind, quasi could have just imagined victor hurting a guard.

@@LexisThoughts Oh, I just remembered. Unless you research the behind-the-scenes of this movie, it's really hard to tell that gargoyles are really figments of Quasimodo's mind. I used to think that they were alive as well. But the broadway show does a much better job showing that. Including Quasimodo's struggles. It's also more faithful to the original book than this movie is. It's by Disney as well.

During the Frollo song, when the Monks say that chant, "Mea culpa" it means, "Through my fault." I don't quite know what they were singing at the beginning of the song, but I'm pretty sure they are honoring St. Michael and the Blessed Virgin Mary. I would just imagine him running away from his home before he got trapped in the fire. He is a literally running out and trying to find a safe place to hide until the time gets better. Until the timing of his home being rebuilt gets better. And I would imagine him very distraught that his home is being burned down and probably losing his mind! It was molten lead used to repair and reseal the roof slates. Why there was so much of it the cathedral's front facade arches turned into fountains of molten metal for several minutes, which would require about thirty or forty times the amount needed to do the entire cathedral roof, I don't know. Why it was inside the main facade and not anywhere they could, you know, pour it onto the roof before it cooled, I don't know. How it all fit in that one big crucible, when such a large amount would fill that crucible a dozen or so times over, I don't know. Why it was all left burning and molten and ready to pour without any workers actually working the roof, I don't know. Why none of the soldiers bothered to try using the two other main doors to either side of the cathedral, on the ends of the 'arms' of the cross it forms, I don't know. But it is damned cool as a visual, so I'll forgive it.
