Believe it or not, that’s my #1 choice of all the foods in Vietnam. $50,000 dong per dish is so cheap compared to $450,000 dong / $17 US for the same dish in Southern California.

This simple approach is just a rewarding for the viewer as your more complex and involved productions.I like it. So laid back and spontaneous. I always like spontaneous. So fun knowing this was shot the day before your Mekong trip, though we know you've already come and gone from there. You make the most of every moment of your travels to capture and share more details than you could possibly post in real time. 👍

One of my favorites. My first meal the last time I visited VN. Great video, spontaneous. I liked it. Thanks for the vi, mate!

I often forget how useful my smartphone can be just to record video at any time. I'm not a fan of smartphone ergonomics for recording video as a rule, but it does the job and it's always in your pocket. 😃 I'm glad you enjoyed the spontaneous tone of this type of video. 👍

Great Com Tam find btw. Also the phone did pretty well especially picking up your voice quite clearly... who needs an external mic eh? lol

When I was editing this little video, I didn't actually like the audio very much. It bothers me that the levels change dramatically when you turn the phone around. It goes louder and softer. But I'm probably overthinking it. 🙂 The one thing I often forget is that both audio and video quality change dramatically depending on the device you use when playing the video. I always edit the video these days on my laptop and I have the audio playing over the laptop speakers. And then I make my editing decisions based on what I see and hear. But someone else playing the video on their smartphone or on a big TV or using earphones might see and hear something completely different. The other day, I plugged some earphones into my MacBook while editing. And suddenly the tone of the audio was completely different. The audio from the Rode Wireless Go sounded almost too loud and vibrant. It was too much in my ears. And then I wondered if that's what everyone else hears. It's so hard to make these decisions. 🤯😁

Hey Doug, have you tried any contemporary (modern) Vietnamese dishes yet? I just had a nice dinner for 3 at Mùa Craft Sake for only about 40$, including 5 dishes, 6 sake cups & 2 cocktails. Still pretty a steal comparing to the West.

I find the food in Vietnam to be very good. And it's also so accessible. I like simple dishes, and Vietnamese cuisine seems to have a lot of simple dishes like pho, bahn mi, and com tam and many more.

I think if you like " cơm tấm " honestly you can search and find some local restaurant to have a less than 50.000đ and also delicious, just my opinion ,but this meal is ok btw

Probably more expensive because it’s in District 1 and on a big road.

Planet Doug, nice to watch you. Glad you’re enjoying yourself in beautiful Vietnam. But I don’t get something, your saying you don’t know what some of these food items are? They don’t have Vietnamese restaurants where you live in America? You never researched or tried anything before you come to Vietnam? You were here 30 some years ago, but some delicious Vietnamese food don’t ring a bell? I don’t get it? But hey, you’re finding out now I guess. Enjoy. Can’t believe some of your friends don’t share some great tips or secrets on what to order in Vietnam?? 😮 but it’s nice to watch you, you explain so well on everything! Great job

Your big mistake was giving the vendor big bills and not knowing the price. There are many street food vendors scamming tourists by taking large bills and not giving the change. Often we're the ones who didn't speak English or pretended/played dumb.

50k dong is cheap, it’s only $2 US. No one was scamming him. Don’t insult people, especially they are also your people

Nothing like that has happened to me during my time in Vietnam. In fact, that hasn't been an issue in any country I've visited over the last few years. When I don't know the exact price of something as simple as a lunch, I often hand over a larger bill and then simply wait for the change. I've never been overcharged that I'm aware of. And in this case, it certainly wasn't a mistake. As I said in the video, I gave the woman 100,000 dong and she gave me 50,000 in change. And now that I've been in Vietnam a bit longer, I know that 50,000 dong is a perfectly reasonable price for the meal I had. I've paid roughly the same amount for this dish many times since then. In fact, I'm going to have the same meal for lunch today here in Dalat. 😁 There's a wonderful cơm tấm restaurant right beside my hotel and I often have lunch there. The meal costs roughly the same at 55,000 dong. Of course, I can't speak for everyone's experience in Vietnam. But I've had an extremely pleasant time here, and every vendor or seller I've dealt with has been 100% honest.
