In southern India, the term "thattu" refers to the big plate that holds all the various foods. Most of the metal used to make the thattu is stainless steel. There are occasions when a cut banana leaf lines it. Although optional, this does lessen the amount of dishes to wash. The platter has a number of little bowls that assist the curries stay in place. The cooked grain, which is mostly rice, is either placed straight onto the huge platter or on a smaller plate. The papads and pickles are also placed right onto the platter.
