perfect, I am also thinking on bying one laser cutter, discovering this new ones that are so small. Your honest review is so helpfull. I thing the big problem is the air suply. That one have to think a way to ventilate it. Your solutions for it was very ingenious.

because of this very video, I got inspired to get me a laser cutter myself. Thank you @LostWax - My question is what settings you used for 2mm and 6mm foam on that very machine (I have exactly the same just not the extension kit)? It can do a lot of cool sh*t, e. g. I use it to cut and score paper models, create awesome wooden presents etc etc.

In fairness for the flame detection feature, I believe it is activated by smoke so a fuel lighter is not a good test. I can say that feature works very well on our Ortur machines that we use for classes we teach. With new students it is going off quite regularly until they get used to setting their power levels and speeds.

Interesting, yes, I'd need to try a few more things to see what's going on there. Though I would say it definitely reacts to bright sunlight every time, so maybe it is a combo of light color/smoke?

Thanks for the review. My day job pays well enough for me to be looking at an Xtool 20W laser. I love that you can cut foam with it - my knife cuts were honed cutting leather - but the filigree work is a beoch! Why 20W? Metal etching. Being a longtime cosplayer, I’ve had to learn a lot.

Well, I've been storing this one on it's side for now, and it seems fine- probably would recommend it being on the side away from the limit switches so there isn't constant pressure on the one. Also, probably a good idea to have it fastened to a base at least for support.

Every time I get a notification that you have a new video it reminds me of what Christmas morning felt like as a kid! This video was like that except it's going to result in me spending some money. I've made several of your stampunk related items and I love your work. The crafting process is just super fun with one exception...transferring and cutting the patterns. No matter how hard I try the pieces are never perfect and although "good enough," a tool that will do it in a fraction of the time and cut them perfectly??? BOOM! Also, as a woodworker I can use this to burn in patterns and logos and all that kind of fun stuff. Thanks for another amazing video and super useful info. BTW, Please oh please do a video on your air filter and set up for your laser laser laser. Thanks Chris! Your status as my hero remains steadfast.

I've never used anything like this before. How did you get your test patterns into the software? Does it take a scanned image or did you have to program it all in?

So, I am not totally familiar with the software yet, but you can use either a vector file such as an SVG or a raster image such as a jpeg. So far I have only used vector images for cutting and raster images for engraving. So, yes, you could scan an image in, convert it to greyscale and then use it to output to the laser. The darker the grayscale, the deeper the laser will engrave. I'm not sure though if you can use a raster image for cutting, because, as I understand it, it needs that vector path to follow. Obviously, I don't know that much yet, maybe someone else can chime in:)

I actually didn't measure it against the printed pattern, but I'm pretty sure it didn't shrink. The one cut out by hand however, grew, as the tracing around the paper pattern adds about 2mm all around the piece. I actually plan my patterns with this in mind, so for laser cutting I would need to add offset the cutting lines a bit to add the extra allowance. I'm pretty sure Lightburn can do that but haven't had time to learn yet.

Just watched your video, but wanted to ask if this would be good for up to 8mm or 10mm foam? I really love making full armor sets, but it takes a lot of time to go through the process of printing the templates, cutting them out, tracing etc. A machine like this that can cut at least up to 1/4in. foam would be incredibly useful and I wouldn't mind building my own enclosure or looking up how to make one. For a machine like this, I'd use it for making everything from Halo ODST armor to scaled-down 40k Space Marine armor. I'll also ask the manufacturer, but thought I'd comment first.

I think it will, but I haven't actually tried 8-10mm yet so can't say absolutely certainly. It has no problems with 6mm foam though (1/4") so I am expecting it to work with a bit thicker foam.

Hi Chris I was wondering if you could share the setting you used for cutting eva foam. I went and bought a laser master 2 pro s2 after watching your video and am struggling with settings. I tried asking on the ortur fb group but everyone just warns me it might be dangerous without proper ventilation and no one has helped. Cheers Phil

So, I haven't used it for cutting foam since I did the review, just because I have been busy with other things, but on my test piece with the 6mm foam, I found that 600mm/sec at 40% power cut through in one pass, as did 300mm/sec at 20% power. That is with the 10W laser of course. Sorry I haven't done more than that with foam. I have cut some 1/8" HDF and some 3mm acrylic, and both of those worked pretty good, though I did need 4 passes with the HDF.

I know it can cut certain fabrics, you just have to make sure it is a material that doesn't burn too easily or release toxic gasses.

I would need to clean some things up, as in if I have lines that overlap each other, even though you can't see that there are two because they are right on top of each other, the laser will cut them twice.

It all depends on how the designs are originally made- My originals are vector format, which is perfect for the cutter, the only thing is that I often overlap lines, say when I am mirroring two halves of a piece. Although when you look at it, it looks like one line but the laser sees it as two and therefore cuts that spot twice. And yes there is a learning curve, it's not bad though if you are used to working with vector graphics. You can also use any greyscale image and import it to use as a file for engraving. (different than cutting, as it takes much longer because the laser cuts the whole image back and forth, line by line.

If I hadn't already bought one after seeing Ben Eadie's video, this would have convinced me :) For your idea of a wireless connection, Lightburn has a "bridge" kit using a Raspberry Pi, but that only works for lasers using a Ruida controller, so not an option for Ortur as far as I can tell. But it might be possible to do it with OctoPi like for 3d printers. You would save a gcode file from Lightburn, load that into Octoprint and let Octoprint output the file to the laser.

@@LostWax Knowing OctoPI from the 3D printing world, it is actually really easy as it comes pre-packaged (you basically just install it) and it comes with a lot of neat features like camera support etc etc. Plus you can super easily integrate it into your home network so no running around with a laptop anymore :)

It would if you expanded the cut lines by a couple of mm around each piece. I have always calculated my pieces with allowance for the extra that is added on when the pattern is traced and cut, but the laser cuts right on the line. I think it's not too hard to add the offset cut in Lightburn though.

Hey there, I'm so sorry, I thought I had replied to your previous question-obviously not though. My bad. As for settings for foam, for the 2mm What-the-foam, the lowest power setting that would still make a complete cut was 600mm/s at 30%power. For the 6mm medium density foam I used 600mm/sec at 40% as well as 300mm/sec at 20% and both of those worked. I hope that's a little more helpful:)

@@LostWax , having laser cutters properly enclosed with proper fume extraction and site windows (if wanting to view the work while in operation) is the ideal solution. Note that the wavelength of light from that diode laser will not be impeded by acrylic, polycarbonate, or glass. So site windows from those materials is not an option. My comment is largely motivated by the legality of selling a complete Class 4 laser system absent of any minimal and expected enclosure and interlocks. The product liability alone (absent of legality) makes it surprising a company would market such a system. Imagine buying a bedroom fan absent of blade guards.

Could I ask for clarification on the subject of sight windows- I notice companies selling orange tinted acrylic as enclosure windows- are those not able to stop the wavelength? If not, what would you recommend?
