Yeah, there are less movies about creating colonies than some lame plot about criminals killing people on a colony or some random monsters killing colonists. The only thing I can think of is the TV series Earth 2 but that had a bunch of weird creepy aliens and in-fighting for basic supplies. Star Trek had a bunch of episodes that had the crew visiting colonies on other worlds but they always went into weird plots pretty much. Pandorum is a creepy horror film as well.

Technically, these are more like Engineer offshoots. Compare them to the ones in Prometheus, and the ones that showed up here look more primitive and… “human” compared to the near perfect beings from Prometheus; conclusion could be made that this was a Engineer colony world.

I do like all the alien films, including the avp crossovers, and these two also. The AI angle of humanity's destruction is somewhat overused, prometheus and alien covenant are deeper philosophically and metaphysically, but the concept of robotics and AI becoming our enemies, which boils down to slaves overthrowing the masters premise, actually started a hundred years ago with the silent film metropolis, was refined and tweaked with the terminator films and the matrix films. Ironically, because of Ridley's current trajectory, alien 2 and 4 are much stronger films now because they show androids at having a chance at redemption. Just my humble opinion.

I think the issue is that few people realize that Ridley Scott has outright stated that the "David" movies are an alternate universe timeline. Thus, it can deviate off to not even loop around to the fist movie, if he wants. Personally, I think it's good that he took that route, so that he's not retconning the entire expanded universe that grew up around his initial creation. I really wanted Neill blomkamp to do his Alien 5, which was going to retcon Alien 3 and Resurrection. He was basically going to follow the story right from where Aliens left off, but rather than crash on the prison planet in Alien 3, they got back to base, which means newt and hicks would have been still alive. Ripley was also meant to have made an alien suit to blend in. They also were going to put the engineer ship within the grasps of the Weyland Corp and study it. Sounds soo much better than what we go with alien 3 and resurrection. If ridley did is last prequel movie (alien awakening) and Neill did his alien 5, we'd have a more stuck together storyline and would have come full circle to complete the franchise the way it should have been. If you Google neill blomkamp alien 5 concept art, you'll see what I mean.. Such wasted potential. Now Disney are going to ruin this franchise and water it down with their alien TV show 😞😞
@jimbobeire
@jimbobeire 3 года назад
That doesn't sound credible though. Ripley is not a soldier, and she does _not_ want to mess with these things. Why after missing most of her daughter Amy's life, would she then head off into space and risk missing a normal life with Newt?
@abrimfulofasha
@abrimfulofasha 3 года назад
@@jimbobeire her daughter was already dead at this point remember?. She was told at the start of Aliens. Also Newt by this point would have grown up according to the script and Hicks would be with Ripley and Newt training them as soldiers. Hicks already trained up Ripley as a soldier in Aliens. Also Niell Blomkamps Alien 5 was going to happen, it just didn't get pushed forward. It's a simple Google search away. Just type in Neill Blomkamp Alien 5. Also MrH Reviews, here on RU-vid has shown some of the concept art for that movie, so it was actually in development, but got shut down because Ridley Scott wanted to do his prequel movies instead. Try researching a little before hand. Seems like you have never seen an Alien film in your life. I suggest you revisit these movies and look more in depth with them cause I shouldn't have to explain this. P.s. type in alien 5 concept art in Google and you'll see Ripleys alien suit.
@jimbobeire
@jimbobeire 3 года назад
@@abrimfulofasha Yes, I remember her being told her daughter was dead in her 60's. Ripley was supposed to be back for Amy's 11th birthday, so as I wrote... she missed most of Amy's life. Seems like you jump to conclusions by not understanding what other people are writing. Try working on that. I've seen the concept art. I've worked on three movies. I know the difference between development and what makes it to production. Like I said, I don't think they could have made a credible script that fits with the character established in the first two movies. It might have made money, but it would probably have been taking the character doing the comic book route just like Alien Resurrection did.

And yes I meant development, I got a little mixed up. I really think it would have been a decent movie and as a fan of many Alien fans, I share the same thought of wanting Newt and Hicks to stay alive, inwhich Blomkamp wanted to do. He's a visionary in my eyes and would have made it work. Can't wait for his first pure horror he's bringing out in August called Demonic. So, what films have you worked on?
@abrimfulofasha
@abrimfulofasha 3 года назад
@@jimbobeire just watched the video and the story fits quite well. Seems like they wanted to expand upon the xenomorph methos and create different variants of them. Either way, the movie sounded great and refreshing. And how can say they'd go the comic book route like resurrection, even though blomkamp had already stated that he wanted to get away from all of that? Doesn't make sense dude. He wants to be true to the characters established in the first two movies, why on earth do you think he wants to retcon Alien 3 and Resurrection? He wants to deter away from that garbage and stay true the source material, whilst throwing some of his own ideas in.
@Corn_Pone_Flicks
@Corn_Pone_Flicks 3 года назад
I personally really hope Ridley Scott gets to do his final movie, which I've not heard much about lately. I'm really curious about one particular detail: in Alien, it's clear that the Company already knows about the creature before the Nostromo crew finds it, because there's that special directive that only the science officer can see which says that the retrieval of the specimen is top priority-crew expendable, which pretty much nails that they already knew what the specimen was. We also are told that Ash wasn't the regular science officer on the ship and had been swapped in at the last minute just before they shipped out, so what I want to know is, were Ash and David in cahoots? They both say the same thing about the alien being a "perfect organism," and I wonder if it may have been David who had that special order sent to the ship, to find and retrieve his pets. Even if that's not it, Fassbender is the best thing about the new films, and I really want to see his story concluded.
@jimbobeire
@jimbobeire 3 года назад
You're right, they definitely knew, and picked an expendable crew to check it out. How they knew is never disclosed. I hope they don't just milk it for a lazy ending. Y'all might have a different take on the theme of this and the previous movie if you happen to know that Mary Shelley's 1818 book 'Frankenstein' had a longer full title "Frankenstein : The Modern Prometheus" In _Covenant_ David is acting like Dr. Frankenstein. In Prometheus we can see several analogies. Whatever built the lab on LV 223 was a kind of Frankenstein, and the big humanoids doing the dirty work are _Igor_ , making trips to Earth to collect more bodies every few centuries. Weyland created a new type of life with David, so while he sees himself as like the Greek Prometheus, he is more like Dr. Frankenstein. I liked Prometheus a ton more. The Engineers’ story, the birth of mankind, was a deeper tale to tell, a new direction. I hear Ridley Scott will return to the Engineer storyline to complete the new trilogy. I think Alien Covenant was interesting, but it would have been more interesting if we saw the film from David’s viewpoint, but without explaining what he did in the past, so we could learn about his evilness and the things he’d done from a different perspective. It would be us, as David, observing and interacting with the Covenant’s crew.

I've always been confused by the first introduction of the Engineers in Alien, where the corpse is so old it has mummified into the gunner chair, which would take countless years, but Covenant introduces the idea that David created the egg pods not that long before the start of Alien.
@YouMeTheMovies
@YouMeTheMovies 3 года назад
I think the theory is the Nostromo crew were wrong in their observation of the Engineer and mistook their space suit as their skin. I think their suit is organic or grown or something and might resemble something fossilized. Also, they weren’t really scientists. Just freighters. Ash the “science officer” never even examined it.

It still bugs me that the Space Jockey from Alien was clearly much larger than the Engineers depicted in Prometheus. The one in Alien appeared to be at least 12 feet tall. Then in Covenant when the Engineer people are gathered below, they look different still. I think the most likely explanation is that they have consciously developed themselves into different castes through genetic engineering. Well maybe that's the second most likely explanation. The first most likely is lazy continuity.
@YouMeTheMovies
@YouMeTheMovies 3 года назад
I think the flashback of David wiping out the Engineers shows there were different castes and different sizes of them. Like the ones from Prometheus are bred for war and are bigger and higher muscle mass and the one from Alien could have been a big time General or something.

With David having been the creator of the facehugger eggs the question is why would a space jockey have a ship full of em unless the fossilized one from the first movie is really just a space jockey suit with a dead David or human character inside from events we haven't seen yet

@@warevampire66692 The Mrs. and I were talking about this today in the car. There were obviously other wishbone ships at the Engineers city. They seemed to be welcoming David home at first until he dropped the payload. In the 10 years he was there working his gene-splicing magic he could have eventually filled a couple of the ships with eggs and sent them on crash courses around the universe. But that still leaves the question of the Space Jockey. Or maybe another Engineer warship arrived during that 10 years, after David had created the eggs and he planted eggs on his ship while the Engineer explored David's destruction before deciding to leave in a hurry, later finding the eggs himself and having his moment. Or an engineer found the eggs and put them on his ship after David left with the Covenant. Lots a fan-fiction ideas to be had. Haha

Have you kept track of human history? We’re not great. Though not included in the movie I believe Ridley Scott confirmed a concept as having happened in the universe of these movies. After seeing humans not exactly acting ideally, the engineers sent down one of their own to try and put them back on the right path. And he got crucified. Jesus was an engineer. I’m not denying the overt sexual themes, but fingering is the accurate term. There’s a bonus video on the blu ray of david talking about his lab and experiments and his plans to make a queen The novelization includes an unused scene with a fossilized facehugger egg and David says they’re an engineer creation, which many people believed to be the case. So he made the xenos based on what the engineers created. However novelizations often have unsused or deleted stuff that ends not being treated as canon. And I think Ridley confirms in his commentary that David is in fact the creator of the xenomorphs.

@@MrsMovies Scott is known for throwing in red herrings though. There's nothing on screen to back up the notion of Jesus the Engineer, nor of them wanting to wipe us out. That last one is one of Shaw's assumptions, much like the assumption that the cave paintings were invitations for later humans to find, rather than a depiction of tribal humans. If you rewatch Prometheus, I'd suggest keeping these themes in mind, slavery, abduction, dodgy experiments to make and control lifeforms, and the long standing theme of the Xeno as a bioweapon. The whole Greek myth of Prometheus is a bit of a red herring. It may be how Weyland sees himself, as a 'modern prometheus' but you go google 'Modern Prometheus' and you'll quickly discover that Mary Shelley's 1818 horror story 'Frankenstein' has the full title "Frankenstein : The Modern Prometheus' . Weyland made David. Shaw even has a scene where she tries to reanimate a dead head using a jolt of electricity into thinking ' it's alive ' . And in Covenant, David is full on mad scientist. Another link to Mary Shelley is that the same month her 'Frankenstein' novel was published, her husband Percy Bysshe Shelley had his poem "Ozymandias" published. That's the poem David quotes in _Covenant_ but misattributes to Byron instead, and Walter corrects him. The abudction, rather than invitation is also there, unmentioned. Look at the cave drawings, and also the dates of them. Sure 35000 years ago we were _all_ tribal . But look at the later cave paintings the most recent one was Hawai'i in the 7th century. Those visits continued to isolated tribes long after other places had cities, writing, etc. So, if it's a benevolent race just popping down to say hi, why visit isolated tribes... who happen to offer human sacrifice as 'tribute' to their sky gods? That crude drawing was a depiction of something the tribe _witnessed_ . Also, the map? It's from a UFO abduction story from the 1950s. Betty and Barney Hill claim to have been taken to Zeta Reticuli. That's the system where the Nostromo first encounters the Xeno in the original _Alien_ movie. The next dot over in that map is the star Gliese 81, which is 34.5 light years from Earth, and that matches the distance given in Prometheus to LV 223. So putting that together, and the fact that the long tunnel from the urn chamber connects with the ship at the _cargo_ bay, rather than the bridge, should give you an idea of whether or not those ships were coming back empty or not. Also, you saw that Engineer had no problem running across the surface of LV 223 without a helmet, so why the super clean air in the dome? That's to stop the tribal human cargo from passing out and dying before they get to stand in front of an urn and stare at/ pray to the giant stone head while the black liquid oozes onto their bare feet. What happened to Fifield is a big clue as to the purpose of that place, he was not yet fully mutated, but his attack was exactly the type of frenzied athletic attack that a lone Xeno would have made (minus the acid, tail and second set of jaws) . He was even killed off the way Ripley would have done it. Remember how she drove over a Xeno with the APC in _Aliens_ ? That plus the giant Xeno skull on the dome, the Xeno carved on the wall, and the depiction of a humanoid mutating on the ceiling (like H.R. Giger reimagined the Sistene Chapel ceiling 'creation of Adam' ) . The horror of Prometheus is that, without telling you, it shows you that humans are _raw material_ for this monster. It doesn't have a home planet because it's always been a tailor made bioweapon. Nothing that nasty would survive long as a species because it multiplies too fast, kills everything around it, and runs out of food. Add to that is the horror, that Shaw (for religious reasons, and wanting to believe she can be reunited with her dead parents) and Weyland (desperate to grasp at straws to cheat death) refuse to see what they've stumbled onto because they 'choose to believe' an entirely different scenario. Shaw finds a 100% DNA match with the 'Engineer' and makes an unsupported conclusion that it is proof that 'they' created 'us' rather than the logical conslusion ... this thing _is_ human. That DNA match could also be explained by these things being a slave caste bred from abducted humans, altered to be bigger, stronger, less individual looking, and incorporating biomechanical implants to interface with ship technology and also tolerate much more toxic air than normal humans. They work in a dangerous lab on a desolate moon... occasionally visiting Earth to fetch more bodies. They are basically _Igor_ , doing the work, then sleeping until their master wakes them for the next mission. I was hoping _Covenant_ would reveal who their master is, but their _master_ might be long dead for all we know. So, if you think any of that makes sense.... then Shaw, at the end of Prometheus, is still convinced that she should go 'talk to the manager' to have her theological questions answered.... when it's more likely these things were kidnappers, DNA tampering, warmongering slavemasters who have no interest in Shaw's questions. Shaw cannot contemplate humans as being anything other than central to the plot, either as the product of a benevolent god (Garden of Eden), or as the target of its wrath (Armageddon). The idea that in a cold, indifferent universe, something could be picking off tribes of humans as nothing more than raw material... that just conflicts with everything that she 'chooses to believe'.

@@YouMeTheMovies I did like the concept of how quickly things can turn bad on a planet that resembles Earth. If we landed on one of those distant Earth-like planets like we were arriving at summer camp then we'd probably all meet the same fate without even having to run into xenomorphs etc. They really needed a Ripley to get their butts in gear in that film. haha

Yeah I really didn’t like that they killed off Shaw and I was hoping for an engineer Homeworld story with her as the prequel Ripley. I will admit though I like the Neomorphs. To me it felt like a new breed that I genuienly wasn’t expecting because all the promotions I saw were laced with the Xenomorph and at that point I’d seen it so many times and I sort of got tired of seeing it after a while, like the T. rex and raptors from Jurassic park when they rehash the same major threat too many times too quickly. I thought the Neos were a nice introduction to more of the alien and prequel lore. But that’s sort of really the only thing I personally enjoyed from covenant. Plus I feel they put the main character in too much stress too early in the beginning over the captain’s death enough to make her reactions to the other events less shocked than other chatacters. I dunno she just sort of didn’t feel like she was actually terrified of the situations until the ending.

10:19 Not sure if this has been answered in the comments but as far as why the Engineers were trying to send the black goo to Earth in Prometheus is not officially explained in the movies and left open for interpretation, but there was an idea that they had but was left out of the script due to it being a bit controversial in the religious aspect. From what I read online, initially the Engineers were using the black goo of their creators in a ceremony to create life on planets. They use their own DNA with the help of the black goo to spawn life. The planets had everything the humans needed to live in harmony on this paradise they created for them. Well humans being humans, we messed up the planet and became this imperfect creation in the Engineers eyes. They saw there was no hope for us so they decided to send the black goo to earth to reset life on earth. Before doing so they gave them one last chance for redemption by sharing the secrets to paradise to an individual to save the human race and earth, but we ended up crucifying him. Had this been left in, it probably would have made more sense of the Engineers actions. After Covenant, there was supposed to a third movie that would end where Alien begins when they find the space jockey (the engineer) in the cockpit with his chest bursted out.

The first time I saw Michael was in a british show called Hex where he plays an evil fallen angel Azazeal who falls for the main character who is a witch. I love him as an actor and he's always amazing. It makes sense that the aliens evolved from humans because their teeth are a like like us and the body is some what humalike as well so that didn't bother me all that much. There is a new movie being made just don't know when it's coming out and what the story will be just yet.

David was not the creator of the Xenos. In Prometheus, the original Xeno is depicted in a mural. Which means that the Engineers themselves have already encountered it long before humans. As a matter of fact, they might have existed even before the Engineers. Again, in Prometheus, Shaw gives "birth" to a tentacle monster. That's simply a much bigger "facehugger", designed to be able to overpower the much stronger Engineers, and plant the Xeno seed inside them, thus giving "birth" to a very ancient form of Xeno. Now, how do we get from the original, huge facehugger, to the small ones, is unknown.

David had no behavior inhibitors, it wasn't that he broke down over time. He developed an Oedipus complex, or a hatred for his creators, He saw himself as superior, but was looked down upon by humans, including his creator who looked at him as nothing more than a servant. The result is something that is both homicidal and genocidal, a monster more dangerous than any alien.

I was so excited for Prometheus because the marketing campaign was fantastic-Only reference to Alien was the name of the company. It kicked off with that TEDtalk Guy Pearce’s character gives, then included commercial-like snippets by David about things by Weyland, etc. As I finished Prometheus, I do think it would have served the film 1,000x better leaving any and every connection out and letting the audience discover those things. Not much of the film stuck with me, however, two moments that absolutely did were when Shaw got inside the medical pod and then when they running from the crashing ship and everyone ever asks the question, “run to the side, why aren’t you running away from the ship?” If y’all are readers, there are a bunch of Alien audiobooks I suggest checking out, (the Alien Covenant audiobook takes place just before the film-in fact, most of it leads up to the launch.) Also, you may like Kim Stanley Robinson’s Aurora if you want these kinds of stories but without the scary alien bits.

Just like with Prometheus, the unfilmed scenes of the original script provide more insight into the engineers and their motivations. Thats propably why they were left out of the movie in the end. They reveal too much. There is an unfilmed scene in which David gives the crew of the Covenant sort of a sight -seeing tour of the engineer city. He reveals much of what he has learned about them in his years alone on the planet. The engineers were a very spartanic race. Judging by their homes and the city, they had little interest in personal comfort or entertainment but seemingly great interest in fine arts. Their technology, at least on this planet is completely solar powered. He remarks that despite the engineers being a much older civilisation than humanity, our computer technology is much more advanced than theirs. The processing power of the Covenants computers or David himself for example, are several thousand fold more powerful than those of the engineers ships. Thats probably because they never really strived for the greatest technological advancements in automation or AI. They just stopped at the point were the minimum of required usefulness was reached. Instead they focused their civilisatory efforts on advancements in bio-engineering. The black goo was their greatest achievement. Its not a bio weapon , although it can be used as this. Instead, it is an incredibly powerful tool for creating and reshaping life with minimal effort. They've used it to create humanity and other races based on their own DNA. But seemingly humanity was their only true success on creating an advanced civilisation comparable to their own, and their biggest disappointment at the same time. Thats why they seemingly "hated" us and wanted to destroy all life on earth. We did not turned out to be what they hoped we would be and so they decided to make another attempt. And just like David said, sometimes you need to destroy the old first before you can start something new.

@proudofyourroots9575 I was going to say the same thing. There is too much information in an organisms genome for a human to map it alone. This is done by powerful computers. Advancements in AI will create breakthroughs in genetic engineering. There is simply no other way to do this. That's why in Jurassic park it was unrealistic for them to have the computing power back in the 90s to repair DNA that has degraded for 65 million years or more. We still don't have the computing power to do that.

As with Prometheus, Alien Covenant has some awesome viral marketing, in the form of two prologues. The amount of practical props built for both films was incredible; Adam Savage of Mythbusters fame got to visit the set & try on the huge yellow space suits. Personally, I felt the original concept art for the Protomorph was much more terrifying than what made it to the scene. I really hope we get to see Ridley Scotts third film in this prequel trilogy & how it will link to the original Alien film. I have a feeling that David may become the pilot / space jockey the crew of the Nostromo find on the juggernaut. Was he travelling back to Earth with his precious cargo, only to crash on LV-426 (which is the sister planet to the one in Prometheus)? Regarding the stasis pod fire; the Apollo 1 tragedy occurred for a very similar reason. Oxygen & nylon igniting due to an electrical fault & then the hatch was unable to be opened due to the internal pressure.
