Hero is such a peak episode. Literally the best. Both erwin and armin gave up on their dreams and entrusted someone else. While all hope was lost hange came back to claim victory. The entire sequence where armin is getting burned, the music, it's so emotional. Never fails to make me cry. Also the legendary levi vs beast titan battle. "I promised." "You were more of a hero than anyone else." Goosebumps Moblit had one job and he DELIVERED. My man protected hange till the moment he died.

Indeed Armin's sacrifice episode is the best in the SAD EMOTION in all of Shingeki no Kyojin episodes. The second is the Final Episode but it's sad because it's the "FINAL" status😅. It's dumb to see some people saying like the midnight sun episode or ep 18 is the saddest. Bruh they're dumb. About the choice, it's so clear. EMA is the main protagonists. And also Armin is young. Obviously youngster is the priority. The mind still briliant

Okay, the only thing I want to say is that people are mistaken about one thing. They think that Levi chose Armin as a plus just because he is not as “selfish” as Erwin, because he is ready to sacrifice himself, and not his people and blah blah blah. Levi did not have a moment for such thoughts; on the roof he acted only with his heart, not with his mind. When he first saw Smith, he immediately wanted to inject him, only because he values him, respects him, and in fact he was an important person for Levi. One can say that he wanted to resurrect the goat commander only for himself. And only after Erwin raised his hand in his "sleep", Ackerman realize what hell it would be for Erwin. Let's be honest, Levi chose Erwin over Armin, contrary to humanity, because he’s a commander and people need him, but Captain, maybe a little selfishly, decided to not care about it and gave Smith eternal rest 🕊️ what he exactly needed, ending the torment. Levi's choice was not cruel, but caring. Caring about his friend. Isayama, writing the end of Erwin, was inspired by such a thing that: only after chasing a dream, you will understand that the goal itself does not evoke such emotions as its pursuit. After Erwin fulfills his dream, what will he do, what will motivate him? Unknown. His arc ended, and it ended beautifully. Smith is my favorite character in the entire franchise, btw. When I realized that he was completely dead, I sobbed into my pillow all night.

The decision is so well physically represented, too: Erwin wants to go *down* into the dark, damp hole in the ground. He's ashamed to admit it to Levi. Even as he's dying, his head is in the past, racked with guilt for asking the question that got his father-and eventually so many of his comrades-killed. Armin wants to go forward, out, *past* the walls and into the huge world outside of them. He tells his friends this with wonder and joy in his voice. When he is dying, he isn't thinking about how he was tempted to abandon the mission and seek out his own dream-he fully entrusted it to Eren. The choice is just so obvious from a storytelling and literary perspective! It's crazy to me that so many people even think it's a real debate.

Truly a rollercoaster of emotions. Eren and Mikasa were desperate to bring Armin back. Floch, Levi and Hange wanted to bring Erwin back. Speaking of Armin. It's true. He is smart. And both sides would've lost if either Armin or Erwin hadn't made those sacrificial plays. Without Armin to figure out the Colossal Titan's weakness, they have no way to get to Bertolt to stop him from getting the horses. No horses means no making it back home safely. But without Erwin's charisma and that speech, those recruits wouldn't have rode to their deaths. The Beast Titan would've continued throwing rocks(since there would be no distraction that allowed Levi to sneak up on him) until most of the Scouts were obliterated and the only ones left would be stuck in a circle of titans until they ran out of energy to move or gas to maneuver. Both Armin and Erwin pulled through with plans that led to a victory, no matter how pyrrhic it may be. They both dedicated their hearts in what they believed were their final moments.

Honestly, Erwin is one of the biggest reasons why everything led up to this point. He saved Levi from the bad people that hired Levi to kill him and he also saved Eren when the government wanted to execute him. He also trusted Armin to take leads in many situations to build trust in people that Armin could it when he's gone. His incredible leadership in overseeing situations is truly amazing.

Levi chose the one who had dreams beyond the basement. They specifically kept showing Kenny saying, “everyone had to be drunk on something to keep pushing on.” Then it shows Erwin saying he doesn’t know what he’ll do after the basement. That’s as far ahead as he thinks. Armin, in addition to all of the other positives pointed out in this episode, has goals beyond that. Because of all that, Levi had a realization that Armin seems better long term.

Warning v long post ahead about my take on Armin vs Erwin Erwin was being eroded from the inside out by all the guilt he felt from sending his comrades to their death for his own selfish motives. However he was unable to stop pursuing his dream, unable to stop himself from being enslaved to this dream because his dream was what he was ‘drunk on’ and not only did it give him his strong sense of purpose, it was powerful enough for him to be able to throw aside his humanity in order to keep pushing through his guilt. During their final conversation Levi saw how tormented Erwin was as he grappled between his duty as a commander and his selfish desire to abandon the mission and go to the basement. By that point Levi had already developed an inkling that Erwin’s motives might not be as noble or righteous as he may have once thought. But it wasn’t until that very moment, that Levi truly understood just how deep Erwin’s obsession ran, how mercilessly this vice-like dream was suffocating him, and how much it was consuming him. As his long time friend and comrade, Levi saw that Erwin’s misguided motives made him someone who was pitiful rather than hateful. Even when Erwin, for the first time, showed hesitation and childish selfishness at a moment when his soldiers desperately needed him, Levi’s initial look of absolute disbelief and incredulous ‘huh?’ quickly changed to a face of genuine sympathy and commiseration because he understands the pressure Erwin is under and how tragic his dilemma is. Levi decided to do him the favor of making the difficult decision Erwin hadn’t been able to bring himself to make. This all ties back to what Erwin told Levi in the No Regrets, OVA: when a person hesitates or allows themself to wallow in regret, they are dulling their future decisions and allowing others to make their choices for them. But in turn, Levi’s decision did also give Erwin a chance to redeem himself before death. Hence, Erwin thanking him with a face of relief, peace, and acceptance. In a sense, Levi fulfilled Erwins’ desire for judgment (often misunderstood as a desire for forgiveness). The surmised purpose of ‘judgment’, is to bestow punishment on those who commit immorality and evil. As a result, to the remorseful sinner, judgment alludes to a possibility for redemption through punishment, something Erwin secretly felt he needed. If we want to tie in Armins’ “Those who can’t sacrifice anything, can’t change anything” philosophy: Erwin sacrificed his dream in order to change himself. He wanted to finally shed the righteous commander mask he’s been hiding behind all these years and for the last and only time, be a true commander who is truly fighting for his soldiers and humanity, not his own goals. Notice he does not parrot his usual ‘dedicate your hearts’ line. He never actually was sincerely dedicating his heart to humanity’s cause. They were empty words and he knew it. By throwing away his script and mask, he was able to finally be honest not only to his soldiers, but also to himself. The final factor that made Levi decide to let Erwin go was when he saw that even at deaths’ door, Erwin was still obsessing over his dream, still unable, maybe even unwilling, to let it go and make his peace. Many misinterpret the final rooftop scene as Erwin slapping Levi’s hand away and rejecting the syringe but that definitely wasn’t what that scene was about. He subconsciously raised his hand because at that moment in his delirium, he was reliving the moment his obsession first began and reflecting on the day he asked the teacher *that* question. Surprisingly, it’s actually the first time it’s fully revealed what Erwin had even asked that day. It’s been teased again and again how he’d raised his hand in class in his childhood, presenting a very controversial question, but what that question exactly was, was never explicitly revealed to viewers until this scene. It really sits among some of the most powerful and emotional moments in this show imo. Before leaving for the mission, Erwin himself had admitted that he had no idea what he was going to do once he fulfilled his dream of seeing the basement. Whereas Armin on the other hand was still full of dreams to be drunk on. Big dreams that have the capacity to inspire *everyone* to keep pushing forward along with him. Armin was ‘looking’ far beyond the walls, all the way to the ocean whereas Erwin’s vision was limited only up to the basement. A dream that stops at the Zhiganshina basement just simply isn’t enough to lead humanity towards the direction in which they now need to go, which is beyond the walls and forward. Erwins’ dream was a source of torment while Armins’ dream is a beacon of hope. Levi understood that letting Erwin go was the greatest mercy. He would no longer need to suffer under his dream (that honestly had become more like a curse at that point), or live every day wracked with guilt, or continue to shoulder the heavy responsibility of making the most difficult decisions for everyone, while still having to endure being called a devil or a demon. Someone in the comments for another video put it quite nicely - ‘If Levi had brought Erwin back, it would have been a betrayal and act of disrespect to his conviction’. Erwin wanted to make his peace after a long struggle and even if it took a lot for him to get to that point, and even if he himself was still wavering inside, it was his decision as well and going against it would be the same as dismissing his determination and resolve. With his wish fulfilled, he would have lived life an empty man left with nothing because he no longer has a dream to chase. Even if he had survived, it’s likely he would have never been the same commander again without that drive. On the inside, he’d just be a regular guy holding on to nothing but guilt, and guilt is a horrible and painful thing to be drunk on. As people often say, sometimes you’re happier chasing your dream than living a life where you no longer have one. You’ll continue to find this to be a heavily emphasized, central theme in this show. Thank you for listening to my TED Talk.

Counterpoint: Armin was the best choice because Erwin would lose something once he got to the basement. Irwin's entire reason for becoming the man he was is to find out the truth that the government was keeping hidden. To find out what was so important they had to murder his father over it. Once he got that, he might not be the same man. Who's to say he'd even want to find out what's across the ocean. Just knowing there were other people might have been good enough for him.

Armin is the correct choice. Armin has saved them multiple times through his strategies as for experience, it can come with time. Also no one said that Armin was gonna take erwins place. It was hange who became the next commander.

If Erwin's Charge was a World War 1 movie following a squad of fresh recruits who had to ride into cannon fire to their certain deaths on their very first missions...you'd have to give Floch his props and his say in how things go. You survive that in your first mission and then carry the general on your back to the medic tent...you get to say something. Even if it *is* to the main character and his clique.

Erwin’s dad is dead. When he told his son about his theory that the government might have fabricated the history of the walls, Erwin told his friends about it. Word got around, and then his father suffered a tragic “accident” in a far away town. Basically he was silenced for getting too close.

Just to clarify: Armin was not lacking when he was asking Jean to take the lead, he was just literally had no idea what to do next at that time especially after he misread bertholdt with the "talk" about annie and stuff.

Levi treated both Armin and Erwin, not as tools to be used for the sake of humanity, but saw them as humans. That's why he ultimately chose to let Erwin die and used the syringe on Armin. He wasn't considering their accolades or what they have done, but their dreams and what would keep them going should they be brought back to life. Erwin's dream is to see what's in the basement, but has no other dream beyond the basement. Not only does he not have a dream beyond the basement, but he is also tormented by the countless lives of his comrades that he had to sacrifice all the years he was a commander. He even was suicidal at some point. There's no telling what will happen to him or become of him once he reaches the basement and finds out the truth. Not to mention, they don't even know what's in the basement. They're just assuming that it's the "truths of the world/titans", making Erwin's dream even more uncertain. Armin on the other hand, has dreams beyond the basement...exploring the world, which is a certain dream. All these combined, plus the fact that Erwin has already accepted his death, and Levi has already decided to let Erwin die ( "Give up on your dream and die" ) led to Levi injecting Armin with the syringe instead. RIP the GOAT,Erwin.

Erwin vs Armin is hotly debated still to this day, *especially* after the series has ended. While people can have their opinions; I feel like many hardcore Erwin "stans" just see him as a badass hype-machine and not as a complex person who feels immense despair for his actions. Everyone hates Floch for what he said about Erwin, but ironically him and the Erwin "stans" are two sides of the same coin since both sides want to bring Erwin back by dehumanizing him. The "logical" choice was Erwin, of course, but Levi isn't a cold-hearted robot. It was only by understanding Erwin's heart that Levi was able to make the decision to finally allow Erwin to rest.

@@AliaAlisah Its insanely disrespectful to Erwin. This is the man who avoids pointless deaths as much as possible, believes in understanding other people or ideas, and embodies knowledge/curiosity. That's the exact opposite of Floch lol

lol I'm Еrwin fan and actually I found Floсh’s words very relevant, because Erwin really was the devil, even Levi confirmed this at the end. They made him a devil. !Spoiler alert for 4 season! But honestly, after Floch ordered the recruits to beat up Keith, I lost all respect for him.

also levi didn’t choose armin bc he’s better bc no one suited the commander place more than erwin overalls. both are smart but armin positive outlook on the world probably one of the contributing factors as he listens to armin talking about sea to eren and mikasa the night before while levi probably gonna chose erwin but he alr said farewell and accept the fate so levi respect erwin’s decision in the end.
