The Prayer is such an underrated moment in this show. I'm not religious but the way that all these different prayers from all these different religions meld and harmonize with one another as theyre all praying for the same things is so powerful

In terms of the no clapping, Lin Manuel Miranda (creator of Hamilton) did a really good Twitter thread after he went to see Come From Away. Explained how in musicals the writer’s manipulate the audience to clap or not clap. Come From Away makes it so that it’s only possible to applaud at three points in the entire show, so gets a huge release at the end.

I just returned from a month in Newfoundland and had the honor of meeting a lot of the major characters from Gander during my travels. Former Police Chief Oz Fudge, former Mayor Claude Elliott, Brian Mosher (half of the reporter character Janice Mosher), and Beulah Cooper (half of the Beulah Davis character). Beulah and Hannah O’Rourke are still the best of friends. Their lives have run some sad parallels, but they have had each other through it all. Beulah’s son, the volunteer firefighter, died young of firefighting related illness, and both of their husbands died of heart attacks in a close span of time. At the Legion, where I spent more than a fair share of time, the corner where Hannah waited is called Hannah’s Corner. It is where Beulah insists all pictures be taken. It a special place. I have been all around the world and there is absolutely no place like Newfoundland. I can’t begin to tell you how many homes I was offered a meal in, or to do laundry, and was told (not asked, TOLD) that when I come back that I will stay with them. I encourage everyone to visit the Island, but ask that you do reading and research about the Island’s history and customs. And wherever you may be from to remember you are guests.

One of the unique aspects of this show is the pace...it moves so quickly, there often isn't time for applause. And there's no intermission either! It's such a great piece of work.

As someone who has worked backstage in professional theatre for well over 20 years, this show is masterfully staged. I love how deceptively simple it is, with just the chairs, and the rotate, and the costume pieces going on and off to indicate scene changes, It works so beautifully, and like you said, seamlessly. I was just starting my senior year getting my undergrad degree in theatre when 9/11 happened. This show had me sobbing within the first couple of minutes, and the tears keep coming over and over throughout. I'm glad you're enjoying it, it's a brilliant show. You're a theatre kid now, welcome. Next step is trying to sing along with all the harmonies as you're listening to a soundtrack in your car

One of my favorite little moments in the show is during "The Prayer." At the end of the moment between the Rabbi and local man who had hidden his background. He tries to hand his yamulke back to the rabbi and he just waves it off letting him keep it. The flow of kindnesses flowed back and forth through the stay

This is one of my favorite shows. It has two of the characteristics that I love: people playing multiple characters and the setting being extremely simplistic and denoting different spaces by moving tables and chairs and then letting you use your imagination. I believe in the documentary about the making of this that they said the show is intentionally run without stopping between songs to hold for applause and without an intermission to help the audience relate to none of these people getting a break

When I saw this live, I think we were all too shell shocked to applaud, the pace is so fast, but the Prayer is one of my favourite parts. Just hammers home how many more similarities we have than differences. I also love Hannah’s song… it feels like, more than a lot of the other people, she doesn’t get to leave the initial fear and shock because she’s not able to get in contact with her son the way many of the others have been able to contact their loved ones.

It's nice to see you enjoying often even common theatrical 'tricks.' The limitations of a single stage forces theatre to be cleverly creative, and it's always a joy to see someone new encounter that creativity. At a time when everyone's at odds, it's also very nice to see you cover this is positive, people-are-good story. Isn't it amazing that all of this stuff is based on actual events? Thanks for providing me with some mental sorbet between work tasks.

Oh the prayer scene… the first time I saw this I didn’t want it to end!!

That instrument you were wondering about, the one the musician was playing onstage is a Bodhran. It's an Irish frame drum.

As someone who's been to Newfoundland, the people really are just so friendly and helpful. My dad accidentally pulled into a driveway when we got lost and the couple came out and invited us in for tea, lol.

I’m looking forward to seeing what you think of the screech-in next time! And Hannah (the woman trying to reach her son)? The real Hannah is white and Irish-born. She was also travelling with her husband. She and Beulah stayed friends, travelling to visit each other after this. The Kevins are also real people, as are Nick and Diane. Janice Mosher is a combined character from two reporters: Brian Mosher and Janice Goudie. Basically, every character is either directly based on real people, or slightly modified (like Bob, who is based on a white man, Tom McKeon). Looking up interviews (like the Tom Brokaw documentary that came out in 2009, well before the musical) shows that plot points are incredibly faithful to the real experiences)

There has been no applause for any of the musical numbers so far except for the opening "Welcome to the Rock" - the show moves so quickly and seamlessly that there's no room for it. You'll get one or two more applause breaks before the end.

Come From Away was playing in Toronto for a number of years and a nearby restaurant featured Newfoundland dishes during it's run. I tried the Cod au Gratin and it was soooooo good!!!

The Prayer always makes me cry. It's one of my favorite moments in the musical. All of these people of all different religions praying in their own way, because it's all they can do in such a terrifying time when they're stuck during a time of fear. Pray. I'm Christian and know 'Make Me A Channel of Your Peace' well. But I also have deep rooted Jewish heritage, so I know the prayer 'Oseh Shalom', as well. Two religions, two languages, and yet both prayers are pleas for peace. And I don't know the prayers Muslims or people of other religions pray, but you can tell they were praying for peace, too. It's such a powerful song.

I found this musical on Apple in 2021. And it is now one of my top five favorites . How these actors change character in a snap is brilliant. Jen going from flirty Annette to captain Sue is so impressive. I loved every minute of this show. The prayer and somewhere are my favorite songs

Regarding the vegetarian comment in the show with the two Kevins - A good deal of fruits and vegetables in Newfoundland have to be brought over on that 8hr ferry from Nova Scotia. During this event, extra tractor trailer loads of fresh fruit and veg were brought to Gander and nearby areas for the passengers. There really were rare bonobos on one of the planes.

The show was filmed with the theatre empty, and then with an audience, so you're watching the edited version of the two shows.

BTW everything in this musical is true. Theres some documentaries out about this musical and what happened in Gander if you could theres one called You Are Here: A Come From Away Story you gotta watch it.

The musician is playing an Irish drum called a bodhràn.

The atmosphere near hurricanes is usually picture perfect. That's why hurricanes were a surprise phenomena before the 20th century - one couldn't believe the weather could turn so nasty after being so nice. The hijackers were looking for a clear day on the east coast (so they could see their targets). Hurricane Erin was churning off the coast and actually creating the perfect dry blue-sky weather that NYC experienced that Tuesday.

A funny moment with this particular cast. When the Walmart employee asks the man to come home with her to shower . . . With previous casts there some comedic sexual tension implied. But here, the actors are uncle and niece in real life. So it might not play that way anymore, but knowing it from before was a different sort of funny

The prayer was amazing, but it was solemn.

Cool .. been waiting on this. This was much lighter this time. There was a hurricane that developed in the Gulf on 911. When it started to hit land in FL on 9-14, that forced another day of planes being grounded. This hurricane hit just south of Newfoundland several days later which caused a lot of flooding. FL also had flooding. I didn't realize there was a hurricane then either Salvo. I was too focused on 911 & the after effects. Had to look that up. Anyway thnx & hopefully U'll b able to post #4 very soon. Blessings🙏🏼😊

I’m not sure if you actually noticed, but there is no intermission. This is very deliberate by the writers. The events that people had to live through in Gander, following 9/11 didn’t any breaks, no intermissions. Everybody involved had to keep moving, had to keep going.

The show only pauses in two places that gives the audience a chance to clap.

Don't knock cod au gratine. I was actually planning to make it for lunch tomorrow, kick my staycation off properly. :)

Of course you can't show the full screen, on RU-vid or elsewhere. If you are so enthralled with the show, respect its creators and don't steal from them by bootlegging their work.

I saw in another video you mentioned that you have recently become a fan of musicals. Im a massive fan of musicals as well and there really none that come to mind t recommend to you because i truly love all musicals so much. BUT there is something that does come to mind that I think you should check out. I love watching young people do productions of musicals and ive become a huge fan of Summit High School in New Jersey. They put on Broadway worthy productions. The Mamma Mia one is probably my favorite. Check them out!

I think the instrument the guy was playing is a drum. If you look at traditional Celtic music you can see one. Not sure what it’s called. Definitely can’t pronounce it.

I grew up in a Baptist family, but I know the Jewish part better than the hymn. But I know Barbra Striessand's version better.
