Iirc, Doctor Who was Billie's first major acting job, so it makes sense that she would improve from the first season to the second. She's also absolutely *brilliant* in Penny Dreadful, which is a really fun series, in general.

My young children and I sobbed for about 15 minutes when this first aired. The music, the acting - oh my goodness, it was emotional in our house. What an ending (absolutely don't care if there are plot holes - they carried it off with their conviction in the story and how heart-rending it was).

Of the two, David Tennant comes over as a more charismatic and funnier Doctor than Chris Eccleston did, but if you take it in the context of what the 9th Doctor had gone through (just before he met Rose), with him having to deal with the fallout of what he did to end the time war, it makes sense that Eccleston played it more seriously. He was burdened by tremendous guilt, and it was only through meeting Rose that he was able to get some of his “humanity” back and start living again! As well as Tennant can do angst and sad and joyous, had he been cast as the 9th Doctor I don’t know whether he could have conveyed that same level of intensity in the same way as Eccleston was able to do, and for that reason he was the best actor to be cast for the show’s continuation back in 2005. Think you’re gonna love the Christmas special, and you’re gonna love season 3 which, IMO, is overall much better than the first two seasons with some tremendous episodes for you guys to enjoy. The lady you saw at the end of this episode is actress Catherine Tate, who is primarily a comedy actress (check out The Catherine Tate show episodes on RU-vid), but she is a fantastic actress in her own right with considerable range and boy, can she play it serious when she needs to! You might also know her for playing a character for a few seasons in the US version of The Office with Steve Carell.

One of my favourite episodes. The Daleks and Cybermen dissing each other is hilarious. I love the Murray Gold score which really helps heighten the emotions. The separation between Rose and the Doctor is heartbreaking with wonderful performances both from David and Billie. British actors usually have 3 years of drama school training (both David and Billie do) and do a lot of theatre. Unlike American actors, British actors perform in a wide variety of places - TV, theatre and stage.) David also does voice work for cartoons, video games and audiobooks. (David has done for voicework for Call of Duty.) David currently is up for the Olivier award for his recent stage performance of MacBeth. He's a wonderfully versatile actor. Check out his performances in different shows. I'd especially recommend the murder mystery Broadchurch (playing a very different character) and Des (playing a serial killer named Dennis Neilson.)

An amusing production anecdote. The actor who played Raj was wearing his own glasses. They realised on the day of shooting that this was a problem, as the glasses would have to be in the effects shots for when his head is basically fried by the Daleks, and that would be impossible because of course it was going to be shot on a different day. However, the actor saved the day by suggesting his character takes off his glasses (which we see him do) before the Daleks approach him. 😀

I know this episode was because Billie Piper was leaving, but for the story it never made sense why they would send them to the parallel universe. Jackie hadn’t been across the void so she could have just casually strolled across to fix the lever for them. I have seen these episodes a hundred times and I cry every single time. It’s gut wrenching.
@HuntingViolets
@HuntingViolets 5 месяцев назад
That's a good point, actually . . .
@andrewgwilliam4831
@andrewgwilliam4831 5 месяцев назад
I hadn't thought of that! But I've always found aspects of this episode to be very frustrating. Another bit of stupidity is Pete randomly having decided off screen to go back to our universe, arriving in the one place at the one moment where he could save Rose. The Series 1 finale was critics by some fans (unfairly in my view) as "deus ex machina" but Pete doing that amounts to an ex machina resolution of Rose's predicament.
@keatonpotatoes4552
@keatonpotatoes4552 5 месяцев назад
This has always bothered me. Why didn't Jackie just stay with the Doctor and do the levers, and send Rose to the Tardis to stay safe?! Or even just send both of them to the Tardis and do it herself?! Like, I get it - she was leaving. But...
@HuntingViolets
@HuntingViolets 5 месяцев назад
@@keatonpotatoes4552 That would have been a hero moment for Jackie, but, yeah, it does leave the problem of how do they then get rid of Rose. Either she would have to choose to leave the Doctor (which would have been kind of amazing, in a way) or actually killed or . . . any ideas?

~~~~ Just so you know, the next episode is another Christmas Special, called The Runaway Bride. Then it's Season 3 ~~~~ I'm so glad you enjoyed this as much as we all did watching it originally and now reliving it with you. I like that even amid Daleks and Cybermen and just everything thrown at us as an audience, it still is a good story well told, that doesn't let down in any respect, AND it still manages to cram in the shows usual messaging about a social issue, this time climate change. This is how quality sci-fi/fantasy is made!! Can't wait to see you all for Runaway Bride and Season 3! All new companion coming soon to a screen near you, and we'll see if you recognize her. 😉
Christopher Eccleston’s natural intensity will often have him playing more serious characters. But he did a good job leading the way. I have a t-shirt that says “you never forget your first Doctor.” It’s true, he’s the NuWHO introduction. David has the advantage of playing a far happier Doctor overall, who has learned from 9. David grew up such an intense Whovian it’s like getting drafted by your favorite team or getting a dream role. He almost turned it down because he was afraid of ruining it. It’s like he has a secondary actor instinct for the Doctor like he’d been playing the role his whole life. He grew up with 4 and 5 in the late 70s/early 80s. Liz Sladen was a hero of his. He said during School Reunion that that meeting scene with Sarah Jane wasn’t really acting.
You made it!! So glad you enjoyed this season - like Syntell said, you never forget your first Doctor, but Tennant really came into the season to make the character his own. Eccleston was ny first Doctor, but by the first episode of the season (not counting the Christmas Special), Tennant does such a good job that you (as well as Rose) no longer miss the old Doctor because you're having so much fun with the new one. This season has some of my favorite episodes, with the Impossible Planet two-parter being the standout for me. And the finale always makes me cry, that moment when the Doctor decides he's going to say it...only to run out of Time. It's ironic, in a way, that he is a Time Lord with a ship that can go anywhere anytime, and yet when it matters most, he doesn't have enough time, and isn't in the right place. I'm so glad you'll be continuing on soon, but I think it's good to take a short break. Last season we traded out Doctors in the finale, and this season we lose our first Companion. It's a big change, as Rose's character sometimes serves as the audience surrogate - she started off new to the Tardis, the Doctor, etc, like many viewers whose first experience with this show were these seasons. But when the new Companion, the audience dynamic will have changed. It will be all new to the Companion, but not necessarily to the viewers. Anyway, that is all to say, this is a good place for a breather. I so cannot wait for you to watch season 3, but I also hope you don't feel the need to rush through. The next season is one of my favorites, with my favorite companion, so I hope you can watch it at a pace that will allow you to truly enjoy the journey. Oh, one last thing, the comment made about Tennant's ability to convey emotion in this show - oh boy are you right! And this season really only scratches the surface of his immense talents. There are some great moments ahead, cannot wait to see your reactions!!
Just so you guys know (sorry if this has been said elsewhere), Russell T Davies and Julie Gardner have confirmed that the Doctor and Rose WERE NOT having sex. David Tennant has also repeated it over and over throughout the years. The line "and the baby" and the Doctor's reaction to it is meant to be interpreted as him being shocked she's moved on so fast/gone back to Mickey. Not that it was somehow *his* baby, were she pregnant. Just wanted to say this, because it's a hot topic of debate in the fandom (despite being canonically confirmed that they weren't by the people who invented and wrote this couple). I checked your playlist to make sure you've seen all of series four before adding this bit: One of the most beautiful things about the meta-crisis Doctor (Tentoo, as he's affectionately referred to in the fandom) is that he represents everything the Time Lord Doctor could never give Rose, AKA a real relationship, **sex,** a family, a proper life. His actual true self. This was written very deliberately, and was planned as early as the very first episode of series two (when Ten got his hand cut off). It's also been confirmed that the Doctor and Rose are happy in the parallel world, married, and have a daughter named Mia! Check out the canon comic "Empire of the Wolf" if you'd like to see what they're up to now
sometime when you've got time between seasons, or when you want to do a sort of special event, it would be neat to see how you respond to a sort of curated list of classic who-one story per doctor, you know, to get a sense of where modern who is coming from and how the show has changed as television itself has evolved over the decades. i'd almost want to say the first story of each classic doctor, except that's not really practical or even possible in all cases. (a lot of episodes from the early seasons are just gone, destroyed, for various galaxy-brain bureaucratic reasons.) but where that plan doesn't work out, then maybe the earliest representative sort of starting place, you know? like, * 1st doctor: an unearthly child (1963) * 2nd doctor: the tomb of the cybermen✴️ (1967) * 3rd doctor: spearhead from space (1970) * 4th doctor: the ark in space✳️ (1975) * 5th doctor: castrovalva (1982) * 6th doctor: attack of the cybermen🔆 (1985) * 7th doctor: remembrance of the daleks❇️ (1988) * 8th doctor: the movie (1996) ✴️: first story of troughton's second season, and his first complete surviving serial ✳️: tom baker's *second* story, and the first by his ongoing creative team, where he's portrayed as he will be known 🔆: colin baker's second story, and, er, second attempt at a proper debut for his doctor 😆 ❇️: first story of mccoy's second season, a sort of soft reboot for how he will be written from here on, and first real outing for the team of ***seventh doctor & ace***-one of the best and most important relationships in all of doctor who 😊
So I’ve been thinking about this episode and I’m wondering how Torchwood was established in the alternate universe if The Doctor and Rose didn’t exist on that planet to visit Queen Victoria and the werewolf which means she had never started Torchwood, because it was that episode and their behavior that prompted her to create the organization in the first place. Was there ever an explanation or did Pete just coincidentally create the same organization with the same name?
David Tennant is a long time experienced shakespearian stage actor long before he was Dr. Who but it was "Dr. Who" that made him want to become an actor as he was a fan of the classic series as a child. I liked Rose in Season 1 or Season 27 as i call it but i have to say i didn't like the way she was portrayed in Season 2 because i didn't like this whole constant romantic tension between her and the Doctor that just never sat well with me to be honest this will get me alot of flack for saying this but i was ready to see Rose go at this point and was ready for a new companion, as for the the Doctor not finishing his last sentence to Rose before he could say "I love you" i'm actually glad they cut it there because i would have hated that personally had he did say it and that's just not something you would hear the Doctor ever say. Originally Rose was going to be killed off at the end of this episode but then RTD decided against it at the last minute. My favourite part out of this whole episode was the battle between the Daleks and the Cybermen it was such an epic moment and i wish we had more of that.
I'm sure the Doctor loved Rose, although some think romantically and some don't (there is no question that he likes to flirt, but he was ready to abandon her for Mme. de Pompadour), and I am kind of starting to see that possibility more now.
So I'm probably going to get some hate but for me this show got so much better when Rose left. I think it really got so much more interesting.
It needed a shift. Going romcom with Dr Who wasn’t gonna work. I would have loved a spin off of the alternate world. Imagine a second world with its own Doctor.
If she is actually gone. I'm going to miss hate/loving her.
@@jeanine6328 There almost was one, although they never got far enough with it to pitch it to Billie Tyler. It was tentatively called *Rose Tyler: Earth Defense.* They decided not to because they were already doing a show set in a version of Torchwood but also because RTD thought it would lessen the impact of the loss of Rose if it wasn't a loss to the audience as well as the Doctor. (I recently watched a video on this.) However, they did eventually do a version of this on Big Finish audio with Billie Tyler called _The Dimension Cannon._
Actually there were 3 companions that died Katarina, Sara Kingdom and Adric from the classic series, 4 if you count Kamelion.
Shit the total body count in the Fifth Doctor era alone far, far outstrips what we see in Nu-Who.
Tbh, Doctor Who doesn't generally, from what I've noticed, kill off companions. Yeah they leave the TARDIS but, pretty much never cause they *died*. I only know of two companions that died, and they're both from Classic Who (and one of them-a robot/android-was cause the only person that knew how to operate the irl robot used for it died in an accident so they were left with this thing that no one knew how to operate, so the character was killed off so they could be rid of the thing forever). So like, companions dying, while still companions, doesn't really happen.
(Spoilers for classic era) The first companion to die was Kararina. A few episodes later in the same story Sara died. Then there was Adric. I'd forgotten about Kamelion, which I think is understandable! Despite all the bashing he gets from fans, nobody would question that Adric was a companion, but opinions vary as to the others. So the total number of companions who died varies between 1 and 4. Personally, I count Katarina as a companion because she was intended to be one (even though the production team realised very early on that her character wouldn't work), and because she appeared in more than one story. I don't count Sara as a companion because she was only a fill-in guest role for one story. I suppose Kamelion was technically a companion, because he was travelling with the Doctor on his adventures, even though he spent the whole time sat off screen in the Tardis somewhere!
@@andrewgwilliam4831 Huh, I've never heard of those companions before, interesting. I remember pulling up a list of Classic Who companions just to check if, outside of Adric and Kamelion others had died and I don't recall seeing them there, which is probably why.
@SpiderRiderKya Katarina was introduced near the end of "The Myth Makers" (a Hartnell story). She was killed off in the next story, "The Daleks' Master Plan". The latter story is twelve episodes long, and she was killed off fairly early. Another character called Sara Kingdom was introduced in the same story, and she travelled with the Doctor and Steven (who'd already been a companion for some time) until she was also killed off, in the final episode. Katarina was supposed to be the new female companion after the production team had foolishly decided to get rid of Maureen O'Brien, who played Vicki. Vicki left at the end of "The Myth Makers", and Katarina went on board the Tardis. However, the production team quickly realised that Katarina wouldn't work as a companion because she was from Ancient Greece so wouldn't understand almost anything. They therefore had her written out.
When you get to the late seasons when "Who" goes woke and writing quality doesn't matter ohhhh....."Love & Monsters" will be one of you faves...
I have to say, without any spoilers, it just gets better and better for quite a while. There are some lows, but the highs definitely out shine them. I love how you guys keep an open mind with it all. Everyone knows it can go left of center sometimes, lol, but eventually it rights itself. I can't wait to see what you think of the episodes to come, the ride is just beginning.
